Talk about extraordinary. Rock Island Auctions has this incredible set of Holland & Holland Royal double rifles coming up in this week’s sale:

Magnificent Set of Three Consecutively Serial Numbered Cased Holland & Holland Engraved Royal Double Barreled Express Rifles Complete with all H&H Accessories and Factory Documentation

The guns are from 1954 and consecutively serial numbered: 35248 – a 7 M/M Magnum Flanged35249 – a .300 H&H Flanged, and  35250 – a .375 Magnum Flanged. They’re all original and they come cased with just about every option imaginable: original scopes & mounts, extra sets of locks, ivory-bead front sights, a full compliment of cleaning accessories and more.

But while they’re certainly nice, I just can’t convince myself that they’re worth the amount quoted at the low end of the estimate – $90,000 a piece or $275,000 for all three. We’ll see if anyone disagrees with me.

Good gun alert: a nice 28g L.L. Bean/B. Rizzini O/U…

L.L. BEAN New Englander Over-Under 28g, 28” barrels
L.L. BEAN New Englander Over-Under 28g, 28” barrels

If you’re looking for a 28 gauge O/U, here’s one that looks like a great deal.

These shotguns were built in Italy by Battista Rizzini, imported by SIGARMS, and sold through L.L. Bean for a few years – I think from around 2003-2004. This one is a TR-20 (same as B. Rizzini’s Aurum Classic) and it features an action machined from a solid block of alloy steel and hard-chromed bores.

L.L. BEAN New Englander Over-Under 28g, 28” barrels: Nicely figured round knob stock with thin black Pachmayr pad, single selective trigger, automatic ejectors, ventilated rib, 100% case coloring, bluing, and wood finish, lightly used, light and well balanced gun, at 6 lbs 2oz ( on my scale) with a long length of pull, includes upgraded factory case and 5 choke tubes. A great little upland gun. 14 7/8” x 1 ¼” x 2 ¼”. 6lbs. 3oz. Price: $1800 shipped

What do you think a brand new, 20 gauge Browning BSS is worth today?

Browning BSS NIB 20ga 1st year SN 125 mfg 1972
Browning BSS NIB 20ga 1st year SN 125 mfg 1972

Say you bought a brand new 20 gauge Browning BSS in 1972 and then never used it. Instead, you left it in its original packaging, and stored it away under your bed for the next 42 years. What do you think it would be worth?

Here’s a chance to find out. This 20 gauge BSS is on Gunbroker now, and there’s no reserve on it. From what I can see, the gun looks pretty much brand new. This listing end Sunday, 5/4 @ 10:45:18 PM ET. So it you like what you see, get on it now.

Browning BSS NIB 20 gauge, 26″ bbls, SN 125, Mfg 1972: Top-quality new old stock 1st year BSS 20ga. 20ga serialization began at 1001 in 1972, and this gun is numbered 1125. Gun is absolutely “new” and could not be improved upon. Both bores were still full of dried grease when I found it, most of which came out when I pushed a brush and patch through to verify condition. Unfired post-factory. From a long-time collection containing numerous excellent quality and condition guns

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE
HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE in a H&H- EXC. PLUS BORES- EXC. GUN INSIDE & OUT: #19100, Holland & Holland Sidelock Royal Ejector 450 No. 2 Nitro Express Finished at the Factory on August 30, 1906. This gun is a new offering on the U. S. market in a very rare cartridge offering of the great 450 #2 chambering, It has 26″ Ejector Chopper Lump barrels with rib extension third bite, 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights, Fold-up night sight, London proof at 80 Cordite and 480 grain bullet, Bushed strikers, Double triggers with the front articulated, An extended top strap over the comb, Trapdoor grip cap with spare strikers and 2 spare front sights, Original LOP at 14 11/16″ over the original 1″ Silvers pad that is removable with plugs over the tiedown screws, Cast-off for the right hand, Proper weight of 10 lbs. 13 oz., The gun with 98% coverage of typical H&H Royal scroll, The frame retains 75% of original case colors, The breech face with 95% case colors, The inside forend metal with 99% case colors, The barrels have 96% original blue, The outside barrel striking is perfect, The buttstock re-oiled professionally and remains in 98% condition, The checkering remains at 96%, The bores are excellent plus and remain in super condition and for all intents and purposes look like they did over a 100 years ago, It is smack on the face, It has a Deluxe Oak & Leather brass cornered trunk case that is more modern than the gun and has a reproduced H&H trade label. This is flat out one nice 450 #2 Royal in a very rare chambering that is seldom ever seen or heard of in a H&H. Then top it all off; it has super bores, great condition, points like a dream with the proper cast-off and is offered in one of the greatest English cartridges of all time that shoots .458″ diameter bullets all day long. This is nice stuff here, most likely the only one of its kind on the world market. ////////////////////////////// Relative to the records from Holland & Holland, it was originally to be built as a 500/450 3 1/4″ nitro express. On the original build sheet it has a memo on June 12, 1906 that it was shot with Eley’s No. 2 nitro cartridge with 80 grs cordite and a 480 grain bullet. The gun is so marked and was proved accordingly. The length of pull on the build sheet is exactly as the gun measures to this day. Another memo on August 10, 1906 mentions fitting a spare Ivory front sight and it still is there in the trap grip cap and never installed. This piece remains almost exactly as it left H&H in August 1906. It was ordered by Fusils Guinard Armuriers in Paris and there is a very strong chance it never made it to India or Africa. Also, a very good chance that the First World War interupted the intended purpose or use of this gun and it remains to this day a very well kept piece. Price: $89,000

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32" bbls
Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls:  A very early Model 21 with double triggers, extractors and splinter forearm.  This 21 appears, in all regards, to be almost completely original and untouched.  The 32” barrels are chambered 2 3/4″ and choked Mod & Full: measuring Mod (.018) and Full (.035(; the bores are perfect and barrel blue retains over 95% original blue.  The frame has bright spots on the fences and on the bottom edges..otherwise the frame has 90-93% original blue.  The back of the top tang is bright and I think the trigger guard has been “freshened”.  The wood finish is original.  No major damage or cracks; just an assortment of 70+ years of handling; checkering is smooth in spots.  Butt plate is original and in great shape.  14” LOP, 1 9/16” DAC & 2 7/8” DAH.  Weighs 8 lbs. It’s snake season. Time for venom vaccinations…

Angus the Lab suffering from a rattler bite.
Angus the Lab suffering from a rattler bite.

A reader sent me an email yesterday and asked that I post the info below. The pic is of his lab Angus. We’ll keep you posted on how Angus is doing.

To all of our D&D friends:  MAKE SURE to get your animals vaccinated for snakebite..NOW…We did and Angus looks like he’s going to make it through this one. (fingers X’d).
All:  Take a good look at this photograph (taken approximately 10 hours after the bite) of our 15 month old Lab “Angus”.  We live on an large tract of open range here in West Texas.  Rattle Snakes are a common occurrence.
Last evening sometime around 10 PM,  I put the dogs out for their last potty break before bedtime.  Our Labs live in the house with us, so this is our normal routine.  I didn’t notice anything odd about Angus’ behavior before turning in – just the normal licking of paws and settling in.  However I awakened this AM to what you are seeing in the photo.  Scary to say the least, but as a veteran Quail hunter, this ain’t our first rodeo.  So, I checked his vitals (heart rate, temp, focus).  He was very alert, able to swallow and was displaying no serious signs of systemic failure that is sometimes associated with a serious bite (actually all bites are serious).  I called my vet immediately and he didn’t seem to concerned for the immediate time frame given the dog’s vitals.  We took him in and he’s at the doctor’s office under observation until later this afternoon.  Hopefully he’ll continue to improve and we’ll bring him home today.  I got to think the vaccination might have saved his life – especially since he went overnight without us knowing he had been bitten.
Now: I advise all of you to get your dogs in for their snake-bite vaccines.  These are a 2-part series and must be done according to schedule.  Some say they don’t work, but I’ll beg to differ as this is the second dog we’ve had bitten – the first made it through with no complications.  Remember, the aftermath of a bite is the worst part.  There can be serious tissue damage and loss of eyesight, smell etc.  I am a believer that the vaccine mitigates some of the bites aftermath.
GET YOUR DOGS SHOTS TODAY!  This is no guarantee that your dog will survive a bite, but you’d sure hate to face the grim reality of “what if” when your beloved dog passes from a bite and you didn’t have it vaccinated.
We’ll keep y’all updated on Angus’ recovery.
Safe shooting,
Jeff

BREDA- 1952 ITALIAN 12 SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN
BREDA- 1952 ITALIAN 12 SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN

Here’s a side-by-side that looks like a good deal. It’s a BREDA — an Italian maker I know nothing about — and it has everything you would expect to find on a top-quality double, except for the  high price.

A lot of Italian gunmakers have come and gone since World War II. It looks this BREDA is one of them. There is an Italian maker named Breda Meccanica Brescia. I think that’s a different company, though.

BREDA- 1952 ITALIAN 12 SIDELOCK EJECT- 28″ CHOPPER LUMP Bbls: #229, Breda – Roma: A 12 Bore Sidelock Ejector Bar Action SxS Game Gun. Made in 1952 with 26 3/4″ Ejector Chopper Lump Acciaio Supernitor Barrels with a hidden rib extension third bite with a concave flat game rib at .733 .020 & .041″ (Mod. & Full), 1.350 KG weight barrels, Original 2 3/4″ chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .033″ and .029″ on the left, Bushed strikers, Double triggers with the front articulated, Splinter forend, Straight hand stock at 14 5/8 x 1 5/16 x 2″ over a full face checkered butt, Slight cast-off for the right hand, 7 lbs. 1 oz., No engraving coverage has a soft coin finished frame, This piece remains original from muzzle to butt, The original barrel blue at 96%.

BREDA- 1952 ITALIAN 12 SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN
BREDA- 1952 ITALIAN 12 SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN

The coin finish receiver at 94% but has areas of surface tarnish but no pitting, The original stock finish at 88% with handling marks only, The checkering at 95%, The bores are excellent plus, It is smack on the face, The barrels ring with a nice chime. This is a doggone nice Quality 1952 Italian sidelock that represents very high value for the price. It has excellent balance. JJ in our shop stripped and cleaned it and the locks inside represent best gun quality. This is a lot of gun for the money. ///////////////////////// Breda Meccanica Brescia has been in business over 7 decades. Most people in the U. S. relate to them from their production of light hunting semi-automatic game guns. Price: $3,400

Does this 20 gauge A.H. Fox CE look odd to you?

20 gauge CE grade A.H. Fox Shotgun
20 gauge CE grade A.H. Fox Shotgun

Nice smallbore A.H. Fox shotguns are tough to find, especially twenty-gauge CEs with straight grips. The one you see here looks like a decent example. But there are a few things about that have me scratching my head.

According to the seller, the stock and metal finishes on the gun are original. I’ve looked at the pics several times, and to me, the bbls and triggerguard look too blue and the checkering looks too sharp  — especially for a gun with so little original color-case hardening. Like I said, a real head scratcher……
