Wow – check out the condition on this 130-year old W. & C. Scott…

Here’s a stunning SxS shotgun. This 10 -gauge W.  & C. Scott is almost 130 years old and it looks like it’s close to new and all original:

W. C. Scott & Sons SXS 10 GA, 30″ barrels Full and Full 14″ LOP 9.8 pounds great bores nice tight lockup.

This shotgun is an  W. & C. Scott Excellentia Triplex, Scott’s B-grade hammerless double and one step down from The Premier, their best quality double. (Scott also made at least two back-action “Premier Extra Specials” during this time, but I don’t think that grade was ever officially offered by the company.) The color-case hardening is fantastic and I love the acorns chiseled on the locks and action. The brown on the bbls is great, too and so is the blueing (note: Those bbls were browned originally and never finished in black & white like some people believe). Check out the shape of the stock, too. Nobody makes stocks like that anymore.

Scott made back-action Excellentia’s from 1884 to 1888. I think this one was made in 1887. It’s on a Scott & Baker patent action and it has Scott & Baker patent gas checks, a version of Scott’s patent Triplex Lever Grip and Crystal Cocked Indicators and Needham & Hinton-patent Block Safety (intercepting sears) on the locks. What a gun.

If you have a Scott shotgun and are looking to find out more about it or sell it, please let me know. I would be happy to help you with it.

  1. Gregg,
Now that is a really beautiful gun indeed and the condition looks to be superlative. I particularly like the ceramic cocking indicators which were something typical of W & C Scott . Very nice indeed.
In my collection I have a recently acquired W&C Scott Premier pigeon gun of 1911, profusely engraved with partridge, pheasant, snipe, woodcock, duck, black game (trigger guard) and an English pointer on the one lockplate and a flat coat retriever on the opposing lockplate, whilst the fences are heavily carved oak leaf. In my view this is a perfect example of where art meets craft in all its truest glory. The brass cornered leather case is original to the gun with a leather trade label of Henry C Squires & Son of 20, Cortlandt Street, NY and states that they were sole agents for W.W.Greener, so my assumption is that this gun was exported to the US and sometime re-imported. On the final day of our shooting season here yesterday we bagged very high and fast traveling 160 pheasants and partridges in a 60mph wind. This W&C Scott gun well held its own in such conditions !!

  2. Sounds like a great gun, Charles, and perfect for that kind of shooting.

I love Scott Premiers. They’re lovely guns.

Do you have any pics of your Scott? I would love to see it.

    Thanks for the comment.

  3. Greg,
I have pictures of my W&C Scott , they sit in My Pictures, but have no idea how to attach them to your blog unless by email to you and then you can separate.

    Charles
