The New England Bird Dog Club’s 2018 field trial is this weekend in Dummer, NH. If you want to see some great hunting dogs do their thing, you’re should make time to attend. This is a low-key, released-quail trial and a great way to spend a send a day and meet other people into gundogs. The trial is held in northern NH, about 25 minutes from Berlin.

The Gun Dog stake on Sunday is great for anyone who has a bird dog and would like to see them compete. Dogs have to hold points, but they don’t have to be steady to wing & shot.

Beretta 450 sidelock side-by-side 12 gauge Live Pigeon gun:
Beretta 450 sidelock side-by-side 12 gauge Live Pigeon gun:

Beretta 450 sidelock side-by-side 12 gauge Live Pigeon gun: An interesting gun that was made in 1954 and it is as tight and fresh today as it was then, some 64 years ago!  Barrel markings tell that the monobloc barrels were made with the best Chrome Molybdenum Compressed Steel, Superior Type and that this gun was imported by the “Wilshire Gun House” in Los Angeles, CA.  Sometime in its life this gun was “freshened” professionally and the 28″ barrels were sent to England to be fitted with five Teague Precision thin wall chokes, that as you can see by the muzzle photo, are almost invisible.  The barrels have a raised solid rib which tapers from 11.3mm (7/16″) at the breech down to 5.4mm (7/32″) at the muzzle; there is a single small brass front bead. This 450 was restocked in Italy (probably by Beretta) with a spectacular and hefty piece of walnut configured with a right hand palm swell and the dimensions are: 14 ¾” LOP over a ½” Beretta pad, 1 5/16” DAC & 1 ¾” DAH with ¼” cast for a right hand shooter. A nicely scaled beavertail forearm with an Anson release allows the gun to be guided easily with the left hand. The sidelock action has cocking indicators, concealed third fastener, single non-selectable trigger, non-automatic top tang safety and it is completely covered in hand engraved a floral and scroll pattern then chrome finished for durability.  All original metal and wood finishes and all are 99%+. Weighs 7 lbs. 14 oz. It comes in a modern Beretta DT10 luggage case with the Teague choke tubes & wrench and with 4 serial numbered turn screws (screwdrivers) fitted to this gun. Price: $12,350

A confession: the 20g C.S.M.C. Revelation OU…

I’m not a huge fan of new guns. For some reason, few of them give me that “gotta have it” feeling. But for some reason, I do have soft spot for the CSMC 20 gauge Revelation OU.

I saw this double for the first time at the 2018 Safari Club Show and was impressed. Even though it’s has a very no-thrills look, its trim, color-case hardened action makes it stands out. And with a straight grip and upgraded deluxe walnut, it’s a handsome gun over-under.

But was is it good?

Shooting Sportsman’s Bruce Buck reviewed it and had this to say about it:

Connecticut Shotgun has done a heck of a job with the Revelation. It is nicely made, mechanically correct, flat-out gorgeous and priced very well.”

So I guess the answer is yes. Faults? Maybe its weight. But with 3″ chambers, this OU needs to be hefty to tame those nasty magnum loads

‘Friggin WOW. An incredible 28g Parker BHE side by side…

Parker Bros. BHE, 28ga, original 26" Acme Steel barrels. Double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety. 1916. 1 of 4 made. Here’s a double you don’t see every day–and may never see again.

It’s a 28 gauge Parker BHE built in 1916. When it was made, Quality B.H. guns were the 4th down in the company’s lineup, below the A. No. 1 Special, the A.A.H., and the A.H. (the first Invincible was completed in 1923).

Parker only made 1,034 B.H. grade guns. That’s not many, especially for a company that built 247,000+ doubles in all. Most of those B.H. grades were 12s. As it says below, only four were 28 gauges.

Double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety.  The gun is fabulously engraved with scroll and floral pattern – a special order feature. It has 2-7/8″ original chambers with excellent bright shiny bores, measuring .563 right and .557 left. Full length matted top rib with proper original Acme barrel legend.  The gun has a capped pistol grip, inlaid with a gold cap and a large “H” engraved on the cap. Original skeleton buttplate with traces of original blue remaining. Stock dimensions in the factory letter are LOP of 14-1/4″ with drop-at-comb of 1-3/4″ and drop-at-heel of 3-1/8″.  The gun has these exact specifications today. Weight is 5lbs 7oz – exactly as found in the PGCA letter.  Barrel blue is excellent and all original and appears to be in the 75% range. Price: $59,500

Solved! The mystery of Barré, one of Purdey’s best engravers…

JAMES PURDEY & SONS BEST BARRE ENGRAVE SIDELOCK SXS HAMMER SHOTGUN 12 GAUGE KING ALFONSO OF SPAIN

Over the last twenty years, double-gun collectors have had many of their greatest mysteries solved, like the story behind the Czar’s Parker and the whereabouts of Bo Whoop, Nash Buckingham’s famous Fox shotgun.

In the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 issue of Shooting Sportsman magazine, author Douglas Tate has solved another mystery: who was  The mysterious Purdey engraver Aristide Barré?

I don’t know how many guns Barré engraved for Purdey. The ones featured in the Shooting Sportsman article are in the Royal Gunroom at Sandringham. Other Barré-engraved Purdeys are in private collections, and every now and then, one pops up on the market, like the 12g hammer pigeon gun you see here.

This 12g Purdey with 32″ barrels was ordered in 1909 by King Alphonso XIII of Spain. According to Christie’s, Barré’s is mentioned as the engraver in the maker’s records.

Gosh, I miss them. My girls at training camp…

I spend a LOT of time with my dogs–most of my time, really. I work from home, and so Lexi and Sky are my constant companions: A run in early am, in the office together all day, a walk in the PM, repeat.

But not this July and August. Both girls went to Wild Apple Kennel at the end of June for summer training, and they’ll be there through this month.

I’m counting down the days.
