PIOTTI KING SIDE x SIDE 16 gauge 28" chopper lump barrels
PIOTTI KING SIDE x SIDE 16 gauge 28″ chopper lump barrels

PIOTTI KING SIDE x SIDE 16 gauge  28″ chopper lump barrels: … 2 3/4″ chambers … single selective trigger … LOP 14 7/8″ … drop comb 1 3/8″ … drop heel 2 1/8″ … weight 6 lbs 8 oz … bore dia: L..675 R.676 … bore restrictions: L.014 R.010 … wall thickness: L.026 R.032.

The engraver, G.Ranetti, proudly signed this work on the trigger plate to the right of the trigger. The receiver is literally covered with extremely fine and detailed small scroll with interspersed acanthus and floral scroll over-lays. Perfect shading and delicated gold inlays in certain areas make this a memorable piece. This fine engraving work continues to the trigger guard, upper and lower tang, operating lever, butt plate frame and forearm latching hardware. This is the ultimate of 100% coverage. The bottom of the left barrel is engraved “W.L.Moore, Westlake, CA. Mod KING 1”.

Finely cut wrap around, 32 LPI checkering highlights the straight English grip and the splinter forearm. The high contrast grain of this European walnut will definitely turn heads for a second look. The forearm features a gold Fratelli Piotti coat of arms. This piece comes in a custom oak and leather case with protective brass corners and a lock. The case interior is burgandy cloth with oak compartments. Accessories include a rosewood & brass cleaning rod, oil bottle, wallet with cleaning tips and brushes, snap caps and cleaning gauze. Price: $16,500

Slatnik and signed, All early Beretta’s done by Slatnik are special pieces as he was one of the leading Italian engravers of this era; This piece has 9 retainer screws, including the replaceable locking shoulders on the barrel, which secure key screws on the frame, forend and trigger guard, I believe the barrels were reblacked a long time ago and very professionally done, All lettering sharp and very difficult to tell they were reblacked, The buttstock might have been re-oiled but not refinished and it remains in 94% condition with light handling marks only, The checkering is original and remains at 98%, The bores are excellent plus, It remains a very stout mechanical gun in every respect. Here is a 1951 Quality Sidelock that has at least 94-95% of its mechanical life left for the balance of your sporting days. Beretta 12 gauge 686 Onyx, 3 1/2″ chambers, 28″ bbls

If you’re looking for a solid, proven double at a great price, a Beretta 686 O/U is a tough gun to beat. My favorites in this line are the matte-black Onyx ones. I have straight-gripped 20 gauge that I used for grouse and woodcock. If I was in the market for something heavier, I would pick up this 12 gauge. It’s at auction now, so check it out right away.

With steel-shot approved 28″ bbls, 3.5″ chambers, and choke tubes, it’s all you need for everything from turkey to pheasants and ducks. It looks like it’s doing to be a great deal, too.

Guy De La Valdene and his dog…

From Making Game: An Essay On Woodcock:

Chet Reneson's "Northern Birds"
Chet Reneson's "Northern Birds"

“That evening I was lonely and I caught a condition the French call vin triste (“sad wine”). I returned to my motel room, packed, and told my dog that we were in the wrong line of work. Her eyes were like pats of butter and radiated a lifetime of trust. How could she know that someday she would be too old to hunt and that soon after she would die? All she knew was that she loved me at that together we had nudged dun-colored skies into fanfare of wings, whimpered and cut ourselves on talus faces, lost ourselves in sweltering bogs, and found birds where there should have been none. We understood each other better than most men understand god. More important, we hoped that when autumn came, the birds would fly.” pgs. 78-79
