Francotte 20E 20 Gauge SxS - 1950, 99% CASE COLOR, MINTY!
Francotte 20E 20 Gauge SxS – 1950, 99% CASE COLOR, MINTY!

Francotte 20E 20 Gauge – 1950, 99% CASE COLOR, MINTY!, vintage firearms inc: General Specs: Francotte, Year 1950, 20 gauge, 5lbs 12oz, IC/M, LOP 14 7/16″, DAH 2 3/8″, DAC 1 1/2″, Serial Number: 89933. Auguste Francotte is world famous as a high-quality firearms maker from the gun making center of Leige, Belgium dating back as far as 1805.  Still making fine shotguns with price tags starting at $18,000, Francotte is a brand recognized and used by heads of state, business tycoons, and in some cases, the fortunate “Average Joe”. Search long and hard, you will not find another Auguste Francotte like this one.  First, this is the Model 20E, one of the higher grades A. Francotte offered in the boxlock ejector format and it has the sideplated action allowing for beautiful scroll engraving.  Second, the gun is 70 years old and RETAINS 99% OF THE FACTORY FINISH, INCLUDING ALL OF THE BOLD, VIVID, ORIGINAL BONE AND CHARCOAL CASE COLORS.  I HAVE NEVER SEEN A HIGHER CONDITION FRANCOTTE 20E!  Francotte guns are nicely built side by sides with a solid reputation for graceful looks and handling characteristics as well as rock solid dependability.  This fine Francotte, sn89933 built in 1950, has seen little use.  Beautifully hand engraved with FINE SCROLL ENGRAVING AND FOLIATE SCROLL BREECH BALLS, this is a very high-end side by side.  The wood is nicely figured European walnut showing lots of fiddleback figure and rich dark streaking, with most of the factory finish still there and the factory 28LPI hand-cut checkering in excellent condition.  There are field use marks in the buttstock wood, but all are superficial and there are no cracks or gouges in the wood.  We can restore the wood for you if you wish in a short period of time for an added cost; just ask about this in-house service we provide.  The gun weighs in at an ultra-light 5 3/4lbs. with its 26” Siemens Martin fluid steel barrels that are choked IC/M and have mirror perfect bores.  It is a very dynamic shotgun with the balance point on the hinge pin.  With the Prince of Wales style stock, it is lightning fast to the shoulder and puts a smile on your face when you handle her.  The gun is mechanically excellent with strong, well timed ejectors, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, perfect screws, crisp triggers…all in perfect working order and in need of no work at all.  THERE ARE 5 LOCKING POINTS ON THIS FRANCOTTE; A HIDDEN GREENER CROSS BOLT AT THE TOP RIB, DOUBLE UNDERLUG LOCKING BOLTS, SIDECLIPS, AND A THROUGH RECEIVER BARREL LUG, making sure the barrels are locked to the breech face laterally and vertically.  It just doesn’t get any better than that!  What a great gun for your upland pursuits, especially for the grouse and woodcock coverts and hunting over fine dogs.  She will represent well at the vintage sporting events too.  Francotte built some of the highest quality guns ever made and they are surprisingly affordable as this gun demonstrates.  Thanks for looking!  Price: $8,950

Parker Repro DHE – 20ga – 26” – IC/M – DT – Straight Grip – Skeleton Buttplate – High Grade Wood – Leather Maker’s Case: 14 3/4″ x 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ – some case color wear – some handling marks – would make a great grouse, woodcock and quail gun – it’s TIGHT like new otherwise. Excellent Field Configuration worthy of an upland hunter. Price: $5,500

A. H. Fox/Savage Sterlingworth Deluxe Brush Model SxS Double Barrel American Shotgun
A. H. Fox/Savage Sterlingworth Deluxe Brush Model SxS Double Barrel American Shotgun

A. H. Fox/Savage Sterlingworth Deluxe Brush Model: My personal benchmark gun. Decided after it being in the safe for several years that someone else needs to own it. Will start it out here for a week and see what happens. Specs are 26″ barrels choked .013 and .020 and bores of .729 per my Skeets, and 2 3/4″ chambers and ejectors. LOP to end of wood 13 1/4″. To end of Antiflinch Pad 14 1/4″. DAC 1 5/8″, DAH 2 7/8″. Weight and this is downright lovely is 6 lb 9 oz. A 12 bore made for bird hunting as they say. Serial Number. is 122114. Call this my benchmark gun because the case colors are just about mint. Slight fading on the underside, but they are all there. Blueing is 100 percent except for some small spot right around the top rib where Dan Rossiter from Custom Stocks and Steel, believed there may have been a bit oil or whatever missed when the factory did the barrels. Gun has been apart one time and that was by Dan when he checked the internals. He added the Antiflinch pad (forgot what was on it). Bought this at a small in Va from a collector. Gun’s bores were covered in cosmoline and per the house the gun had not been fired for over 50 years (who knows). Wasn’t fired much if at all. Some flaking on the finish in spots. I’ve done nothing to the gun and its time to move it on. Pictures when the sun comes up. Serial Number: 122114, Barrel Length: 26″, Chambers: 2 3/4″, Ejectors: Yes, Condition: Excellent, Metal Condition: Excellent, Wood Condition: Small bit of flaking, Bore Condition: Mint, Triggers: 2, Gauge: 12, Butt Pad: Jostam Anti flinch, Weight: 6 lb 9 oz, Choke Left: Mod, Choke Right: IC. PS.  This is a Savage marked gun with all the best Philly Fox features.   Also had twin Ivory beads (front and rear). Price: $1,950

William Greener 10g Percussion Side-by-Side 1853 New York Exhibition
William Greener 10g Percussion Side-by-Side 1853 New York Exhibition

William Greener 10g Percussion Side-by-Side 1853 New York Exhibition: An incredible William Greener 10g Percussion Gun made for the 1853 New York Exhibition and remains in remarkable original condition.   The gun is fitted with bar action locks with “Newcastle” style hammers and engraved in wonderful game scenes, obviously inspiring the engraving patterns of the later W.W. Greener high-grade guns. The right lock plate shows two setters pointing a brace of grouse, one looking over its shoulder (a tell-tell characteristic of original Greener guns). The left lock shows two running setters behind the hammers and a brace of snipe, one flushing one looking over its shoulder surrounded by full coverage and expertly engraved acanthus scroll, The trigger bow engraving shows a brace of pointers surrounded by scroll. Hammers and the breach block feature a dog’s head surrounded by matching scroll engraving. Furniture is also fully covered in matching scroll. The 29 3/4″ William Greener’s Laminated Steel barrels have a smooth game rib, platinum inlays with extensive engraving scroll along the full length of the rib, at the breaches, in the middle of the barrels and at the muzzles. The highly figured walnut is beautifully checkered in a point pattern on a straight hand grip and forend.  The stock has a 14″ LOP over a smooth steel butt plate with a game scene engraved 4-tiered “widow’s peak” depicting a brace of pheasant, the hen flushing, and the rooster looking over his shoulder surrounded by matching scroll. The original gold-stock shield between the hammers remains blank. Finally, the gun is housed in its original Oak & Leather case lined in a blue calf’s skin with its original trade label and host of accouterments.  Retains probably 20% original case colors in protected areas. Much of the original black remains on trigger bow and there are strong traces of original black on trigger bow tang and butt plate. The balance of metal having a soft silvered patina and the engraving remains sharp showing all its original shading and detail. The platinum letters on top rib remain all intact and remain flush. The bores remain in excellent condition and the barrels are bulge and dent free. Finally, the original case remains sound and sturdy and in equally remarkable condition as the gun. In addition to its history and provenance, this is without a doubt the oldest gun I have ever handled in such high, original condition and a testament to the illustrious reputation the elder Greener is famous for.  Price: $25,000

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE

Here’s a gun you don’t see every day — and that’s one of the reasons I featured it yesterday as one of this week’s 5 doubles you don’t want to miss. The other reason? Well, just look at it.

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:

Auguste Francotte & Cie. was one of the world’s premier gunmakers. Founded in 1805, they built guns in Belgium and exported them around the world. Von Lengerke & Detmold brought them into the US from 1889 to 1929; Abercrombie & Fitch took over in 1930 and continued until 1971. Altogether, about 5,000 or so new Francottes were shipped to the US.

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:

Most were high-quality Francotte boxlocks like this and this. A few were top-of-the-line sidelocks like what you see here — possibly one of these “De Luxe” models Abercrombie & Fitch offered in 1930.

Of course, the first thing about this gun that catches your eye is the metalwork. I think it uses a combination of engraving and chasing (if I have the terms right). Overall, the work reminds me of guns done by Aristide Barré, the French artist who embellished some of the finest Purdeys out there.

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:

The proportions and lines of the gun also stand out. I like how rounded the backs of the locks are and how your eye passes from there into the drip-like drop points. The stock looks broad and substantial, and there’s a little belly in it to secure and position the shooter’s hand. But it doesn’t look cumbersome or overwhelming. Overall, the gun stands out, without screaming for attention.

Auction alert: 16g Auguste Francotte OU shotgun, No Reserve …

Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer
Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer

Here’s something you rarely see. It’s a vintage 16 gauge over-under with double triggers, and it appears to be in decent original condition. It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the listing ends tomorrow, 4/21/2019 @ 9:15 PM.

Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer
Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer

Back before WW2, the OU was the latest thing in firearms. Even though gunmakers had been building them for centuries, over-unders didn’t become popular until companies like Merkel and then Boss and Woodward started offering hammerless designs.

I’m not sure what patent this gun is built on. Even though it looks a bit clunky, I bet it handles really well.

Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer
Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer

Auguste Francotte 16ga Over/Under London Retailer: Very nice Belgian made 16ga over/under shotgun. Retailer marked “L. Le Personne & Co., LTD, London” on left side of barrel and “Auguste Francotte” on right side. All numbers match. LOP of 14.5” to end of stock which is finely checkered. 27” barrel choked Full/Full. For use with 2 3/4″ shells. Drop at heel of 2″ and drop at comb of 1.5″. Weighs approx. 6.5 lbs. Probably made between 1930-1950. Original finish on both metal and wood with nicely blued trigger guard and latch offset by fine muted case color receiver. Barrels have their original blue and are nice and shiny inside. Mechanics work well and are still stiff. The handguard has a hairline crack on each side that is hardly noticeable, common on these hand made forearms that are very slight in nature. We sold this one a few weeks back and it was returned because it lacked the AF mark typically seen on both barrels on Francotte shotguns- take a look at the pictures and you decide. This London retailer and Auguste Francotte marked 16ga over/under shotgun is offered with no reserve!

10g Joseph Lang & a .410 Francotte: Two SxS shotguns coming up at Poulin Auctions …

Here are two more nice doubles coming up at Poulin Auctions 2018 Fall sale, which starts this Saturday, 10/20.

This Lang is a converted pinfire and an interesting piece of history. Lang was one of the first British makers to build breechloading shotguns, and I bet this gun was among the first ones he built.

Parker AHE 12ga SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, ½ Frame Factory Two Barrel Set 26” and 28” Single Selective Trigger: LOP: 14” to end of pad, Hawkins Pad with 3/4″ Spacers. Barrel Set No. 1 is 28” choked RH: Modified and LH: Full   Weight of gun is 7.7 pounds with these barrels. Parker AHE 12ga SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, ½ Frame Factory Two Barrel Set 26” and 28” Single Selective Trigger
Parker AHE 12ga SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, ½ Frame Factory Two Barrel Set 26” and 28” Single Selective Trigger

Both sets of barrels are 90% or better.  Both sets of barrels lock up tight and on the face.  There is no corrosion either inside or outside either set of barrels.  There are no dents or dings on either set of barrels.  Ejectors for both sets of barrels work properly and are in time.
The forearm wood shows little to no use.  All checkering on both forearms is in very fine condition.  There are no issues with either forearm.

The Stock checkering is in very fine condition showing little use.  The stock was cut and subsequently lengthened with the installation of 3/4″ total in spacers.  The Hawkins Pad is period correct.  The Parker letter does not indicate the stock treatment.  There are a few handling marks on both sides of the stock.

The action has 90% or better case colors.  There are Pheasant on the right and Quail on the left.  The bottom is engraved with two Setters and a fence row.  All screws are in fine condition and in time. The gold grip cap is in place and has initials engraved in it as well as a finely engraved border.

This is a fine condition Late Remington Parker AHE. This is one of the last three AHE’s manufactured according to the Parker Story.  According to the Parker Story there were only 4 total 12 gauge AHE’s manufactured with 26” Fluid Steel Barrels.  There were only 18 total 12 gauge AHE’s manufactured with 28” Fluid Steel Barrels.  This is also on a desirable and scarce Parker ½ Frame action.  This combination makes this Parker extremely rare and possibly the only one manufactured.  With the exception of the stock modifications listed above the firearm shows little use.  The firearm matches the Parker Letter.  This is a no excuses, no speculation, verified factory two barrel, high grade, 1/2 Frame firearm that can easily take its place as the centerpiece of a collection. Both barrel sets are stamped ½ and all measurements on the action confirm this is a ½ frame 12ga. Price: $55,000

John Rigby 12 Bore – LONDON BEST SIDE BY SIDE 1992, CASED6lbs 6oz, SxS, IC/M, LOP 14 3/4″, DAH 2 5/8″, DAC 1 5/8″. Serial Number: 18475. Purpose built in 1992 for gunning American upland birds over fine dogs. Weighing just 6lbs. 6oz. and balanced perfectly 1/8” in front of the hinge pin, the gun is fast to shoulder and a pleasure to carry all day through tough terrain. With its 28” chopper lump barrels choked IC/M and the English style stock the gun is simply gorgeous. The sidelock action has side plates shaped in the traditional Rigby style, with cocking indicators, game scene/banknote scroll engraving, perfect screws and metal fit, and sculpted bolsters on the bottom of the frame. The original case color is still prominent and aged to that perfect hue and contrast. The gun is stocked to the fences with gorgeous English walnut with a diamond shape at the grip, drop points, perfect 28LPI checkering, and terminates in a gorgeous pigskin Purdey style leather covered pad. The gun has the Holland & Holland style assisted-opening feature that you would expect from a true LONDON BEST, and is housed in the factory oak & leather case with all the best accessories. THIS IS A RARE FIND THAT YOU WON’T SEE FOR SALE IN THE MARKETPLACE AGAIN FOR SOME TIME. The reputation of Paul Roberts building best guns in the finest English fashion is well established. The engraving, done by John Beech of London, is superb, with gorgeous scenes of woodcock, pheasants, and a setter on point. A finer investment in the gunmaker’s art would be hard to find, regardless of the name on the barrels. Thanks for looking! Price: $24,500.00

Francotte 14E 12ga. SXS Boxlock Ejector w/30 inch ejector barrels. A beautiful 1931 gun in exc. conditionThis 14E is a fine quality gun with a considerable original finish. The Belgium Francottes can compete with the finest guns ever made. Unaltered except for the recoil pad–it features 30-inch barrels with ejectors that have fine bores–mirror bright. The chokes are Mod and Full–.021 and .037. Considerable case colors remain, even on the triggers–signifying low usage. The stock dimensions are a very shootable 14 1/2 x 1 7/16 x 2 1/4 inches. The mechanics and screws are excellent. Toplever to the right. Built is 1931 and imported by Von Lengerkt & Detmold in New York City–this gun ended up on a farm in Buck Co. Pa. A pheasant shooter for sure that would make a nice clays gun too. It weighs 7-3 and carries nicely. Price: $2750

Francotte: “… an imported hand made gun at an American price.”

Francotte Shotguns, from 1938 Abercrombie & Fitch catalog
Francotte Shotguns, from 1938 Abercrombie & Fitch catalog

For most of the 20th century, Abercrombie & Fitch was the most famous name in American sporting goods. From a retail store on NYC’s Madison Avenue, and through catalogs sent out across North American, A&F sold everything from firearms to fishing lures.

In 1938, the first spread of their Rifle-Shotgun catalog opened with the following copy:

“In our opinion the Francotte, famous Belgian gun adapted by us to the American Sportsman and improved over a period of 50 years, represents real gun value second to none. It is, in fact, an imported hand made gun at an American price.”

Three pages of Francottes followed: From the top of the line Eagle Grade Hammerless Ejector No. 45 Quality to the Knockabout Ejector. All these guns featured Siemen-Martin ‘Special’ fluid steel barrels and could be ordered with Greener-crossbolts or doll’s head extensions. They were made made on what A&F called a “Francotte lock action”, said to be an improvement on Anson & Deeley-type boxlock action, and featured Francotte-patent ejectors.

Price wise, Francottes weren’t cheap. But they weren’t super expensive, either. At a time when a Parker Quality A-1 Special Quality with ejectors was $890, a Parker Quality B.H.E. was $375 and a Fox X.E. was $165, Francotte’s Eagle Grade Hammerless Ejector No. 45 Quality was $550. Their most affordable double — the Francotte Knockabout Ejector — was $175. In between were models like the No. 30 Quality (30E) at $400 and a No. 20 Quality (20E) at $275.

Compared to their American competitors, all these Francotte’s were built on superior designs, featured better finishing and proper scaling, and were more aesthetically pleasing overall. If you had stopped into A&F’s Madison Avenue store and placed a Parker, Fox, and Francotte side by side, it would have been plain to you which one was superior.
