Nice looking Lefever alert! A 16g HE with a rare straight grip…

Lefever HE 16E gauge Side-by-Side Shotgun
Lefever HE 16E gauge Side-by-Side Shotgun

I used to be hot for Lefevers – especially ones in 16 gauge.  I owned three F-grades 16s at one point, including one that was practically new.

These days, my passion for Uncle Dan’s doubles has cooled a bit. But I have to say, the Lefever you see here does get my heart pumping. Its sleek looks reminds me why I fell in love with these guns. If the stock was a bit longer, I’d be on the phone right now trying to cut a deal.

Last minute alert: Vintage American SxS shotguns going off today…

Here’s an auction just found out about. It’s full of vintage American double barrel shotguns – Lefevers, L.C. Smith, Parkers, Foxes, etc – and some look real nice. Z B Barfield in Hallwood, VA, is having the sale and it starts today @ 11:30 AM EST. Below are some of the SxSs that caught my eye. BTW: this is a very buyer-beware sale. The descriptions of the guns are awful, and the pics are worse. Be careful if you’re bidding blind.

Super rare D.M. Lefever alert: a 16 gauge 9F side by side shotgun….

16 gauge D. M. Lefever 9F Double Barrel Shotgun
16 gauge D. M. Lefever 9F Double Barrel Shotgun

Here’s a super rare shotgun. According to the seller, it’s a 16 gauge D.M. Lefever 9F. The pics stink (and description is just as bad), so squint and take a good look. I’ll doubt you’ll see another one.

These guns were made by Daniel Myron Lefever after he left the Lefever Arms Co. I think they were made from about 1901-1905. I’ve seen a couple of them and they are unique guns. This is the only 16g I’ve come across.

This is all the seller is saying out it:

Lefever  16 ga   crossbolt  28″ Krupp  barrels:  9 F  Very pretty  looks like  either  stump  and tree fork walnut   ,only about 20  ever  made , in this grade . Price: $8,400

Good gun alert: a nice Lefever EE double barrel shotgun….

12 gauge Lefever EE grade Double Barrel Shotgun. Straight Grip

Lefever is one my favorite American shotgun makers. While their lower-grade doubles are too plain for me, the E-grades and up are some of the most beautiful side-by-sides this country has ever built.

Check out this EE grade to see what I mean. And if you know where I can find a nice 16 gauge E grade Lefever, please let me know. I’ve been looking for one for years.

A couple American classics: an A.H. Fox B grade & a Lefever EE grade…

A. H. FOX, PHIL., B GRADE 12 GAUGE, 30" KRUPP FLUID STEEL BARRELS
A. H. FOX, PHIL., B GRADE 12 GAUGE, 30″ KRUPP FLUID STEEL BARRELS

Here’s the best advice I ever got about collecting shotguns: Buy the most original condition you can afford. People always want good, original guns — especially American guns — and a nice, unmessed-with SxS or O/U always holds its value.  Also, because so many people insist upon “refinishing” their doubles, good, original shotguns get scarcer every day.

So if I were still crazy about American doubles, I would take a long like at the two you see here. They’re as classic as you can get, and both appear to be nearly all original. Both feature fair prices, too, and the Lefever looks like it could be a deal.

A. H. FOX, PHIL., B GRADE 12 GAUGE, 30″ KRUPP FLUID STEEL BARRELS: F&M, 2 9/16″ CHAMBERS, EXCELLENT BLUE, MIRROR BORES. GAME SCENE ENGRAVED WITH BIRDS AND SCROLLWORK, TRACE OF CASE COLOR. ROUND KNOB PISTOL GRIP STOCK, SPLINTER FOREARM. NICELY FIGURED ENGLISH WALNUT, FINE CHECKERING, ATTRACTIVE WOOD WITH NICE FINISH. SOLID LEATHER FACED PAD, 1 5/8″ X 2 3/4″ X 14, WEIGHS 7 1/4 POUNDS. MADE IN 1910. NICE ALL ORIGINAL EARLY FOX. Price: $2,350

More pics of a super rare Lefever 20g Lefever 20 gauge BE shotgun…

20 gauge Lefever BE double barrel sxs shotgun
20 gauge Lefever BE double barrel sxs shotgun

High-grade Lefevers are special shotguns. The Bs, As, AAs, Optimus-grades and Thousand-Dollar Grades guns made by Uncle Dan’s company are some of the finest side-by-sides ever made in America. The Lefever you see here is a 20 gauge BE – one of just six B-grade 20 gauge Lefevers known –  and an excellent example of just how nice these upper-grade doubles could be.

B-grade Lefevers were expensive shotguns. In 1883, Lefever listed it for $200, and it continued to cost that until at least 1913. It’s estimated that Lefever built around a thousand B grades, and each one was a custom made shotguns. According to the book “Uncle Dan. Master Gunmaker” by Robert Elliott, Lefever’s 1904-1905 catalog stated the following about them:

20 gauge Lefever BE double barrel sxs shotgun
20 gauge Lefever BE double barrel sxs shotgun

“B” GRADE – $200. Fitted with Automatic Shell Ejector – $215. This is one of our best guns and a popular one with sportsman. We furnish it with English Damascus or Krupp Steel barrels, either being of superior style and of great strength. We fit this gun with a handsome English walnut stock; straight grip, one-half pistol or full pistol grip, horn cap; gold-plated triggers and indicators; horn butt plate. It has the Lefever full compensating action. The engraving is an appropriate hunting scene, as shown on lock=plate, elegantly executed. Richly checkered and finished; ten, twelve, sixteen, and twenty gauge.”

Feeling lucky? A Lefever 16g & 20g two barrel set at auction…

Auctions seem like straight forward businesses: You give the auctioneer an item; they promote it, sell it, and charge you and the buyer a percentage of the hammer price. Done.

Because auctioneers are work for a percentage of the sale price,  it’s in their best interest to do everything possible to increase the hammers on the lots they’re bringing to market. Or at least it should be.

16g/20g Lefever Two Barrel Set
16g/20g Lefever Two Barrel Set

Many times, though, this isn’t the case. Whether through ignorance, negligence or just plain incompetence, a lot of auctioneers do a lousy job of describing, photographing, and selling items — especially firearms. The end result is a lot less money for them – – and you.

The listing for this Lefever is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. This is all the seller says about it:

LE FEVER SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN SET CALIBER: 16 & 20 GAUGE SERIAL NUMBER: 65428

This gun comes up for auction tomorrow, 1/11 at the Lewis & Maese Auction Company in Houston, TX. With lousy pictures and limited information, the auctioneer is doing the seller a disservice and costing everyone money.

But there is an upside to this. If you’re a buyer, you may be able to get a deal. This listing will scare off a lot of people. If you’re brave, or lucky enough to be able to inspect the gun for yourself, you may be able to buy it cheap.

Mystery shotgun: a 10/12 gauge J.A. Prechtel “Lefever” double barrel…

"LeFever" Ornately Engraved High Grade Gun, 10 & 12 gauge Set
J.A. Prechtel – LeFever 10 & 12 gauge Set

The doubel barrel shotgun you see here is a head scratcher. While it sure looks like a Lefever and it’s made on a Lefever-pushlever-patent action, it was made by J.A. Prechtel. Who was J.A. Prechtel? I have no idea, and neither does anyone else.

According to the inscription on the barrels, Prechtel was located in Clevelan, OH. Did he have some connection with Lefever? Perhaps. Where else would he have learned to make “Lefever” shotguns? How did he get the action? Nobody knows. What’s certain though is that this is very cool shotgun. Whoever made it knew what they were doing, whoever they were and whatever they were doing.

You can here to see more & better pics, and read a bit of the speculation surrounding the gunmaker J.A. Prechtel.

Busy, busy…The Vintagers, nice guns, and more…

The Vintagers 2013 Event
The Vintagers 2013 Event

Sorry for my lack of posts lately. My life has been crazy — shooting events, work, training for a race, plus a new house with a long list of honey-do’s to check off before my hunting season can get rolling.

On Saturday I made it down to Addieville, RI, to catch The Vintager’s annual event. The weather was great, and there were a hundred of nice guns there American, British, European. Check out the slideshow below to see a few.

The Fox Collectors and Lefever Collectors had a bunch of fabulous guns on display, and dealers like Steve Barnett and Griffin & Howe had some fabulous pieces on their tables. I hear the shooting was good, too.

Last week I drow 6+ hours and 400+  to check out the Orvis Game Fair in Millbrook, NY. I have to say, this event is turning into a great show. I number of gun dealers were on hand – Connecticut Shotgun, Griffin & Howe, Steve Barnett, etc – along with makers like Purdey and Williams & Son. It was much better attended than Vintagers, and it offered a lot more for everyone in the family. It was also free to get in.

This week’s good guns. Powered by Gunsinternational.com.

LEFEVER "H" GRADE 16 GAUGE Double Barrel SHOTGUN
LEFEVER “H” GRADE 16 GAUGE Double Barrel SHOTGUN

There aren’t a few rules to gun collecting. “Cash rules” is one of them. So is “Oral agreements are worth the paper they’re written on.”

Another rule is “Original condition is king”. The more of it a double has, the more it costs (and “restored” never compares to original). Wow- Is this a super rare Dangerfield-Nichols-Lefever American drilling?

12 gauge - 38-55 Ballard Drilling, possibly made by Dangerfield-Lefever
12 gauge – 38-55 Ballard Drilling, possibly made by Dangerfield-Lefever

Daniel Myron Lefever was one of the geniuses of American gunmaking. Judging by the number of partnerships and businesses he formed in his career, he must have been mercurial, too.

Born in 1835, Uncle Dan started making firearms under his own name in 1857. Around 1871-1872, he was involved with a guy named Francis Dangerfield of Auburn NY. Then in 1876 Lefever partnerd up with a guy names John Nichols. This association was also short lived. By 1879, it was over and Lefever was back to making guns under his own name.

12 gauge - 38-55 Ballard Drilling, possibly made by Dangerfield-Lefever
12 gauge – 38-55 Ballard Drilling, possibly made by Dangerfield-Lefever

The gun you see must have been made during one of Lefevers association with Danagerfield or Nichols, or maybe right after these partnerships dissolved. Even though it doesn’t carries a maker’s name, it’s built with Dangerfield and Lefever patents, and it looks like the hammerguns made by Nichols & Lefever.

Whatever it is, it’s beautifully made, and it looks very original. Here’s more about it from the seller:

12 gauge - 38-55 Ballard Drilling, possibly made by Dangerfield-Lefever
12 gauge – 38-55 Ballard Drilling, possibly made by Dangerfield-Lefever

12 gauge, 38/55 Ballard. Possibly made by Dangerfield/Nichols/Lefever: This is a no name, no proof marks, no letters or numbers of any kind on the gun to suggest it was made in Europe. You can see from the pictures that the gun was built by an artist. It is a side by side 12 gauge with 2 and 9/16 chambers over a 38-55 Ballard rifle barrel. I have had a myriad of experts look at the gun and about the only thing they agree on is it was made in America around 1870 to 1880. The fixture on the barrel that holds the forend on is a Dan L., 1878 patent, #205193. Also identified is a 1872 Dangerfield patent, #130984.

Keep in mind these are not marked on the gun but rather identified by the experts, hence the patent dates and numbers were provided to me. The gun appears to have been shot very little. The reversed trigger not only cocks the hammerless rifle barrel but it also activates and creates a set trigger out of the left shotgun trigger but only when in the rifle mode. The removable gizmo on the end of the barrels is called a false muzzle, the purpose of which was to satisfy the wisdom of those days that the rifle would be more accurate if the rifling were engraved on the bullet before firing. The bullet was pushed/tapped down the barrel with a pre measured wooden dowel to a waiting primed and loaded case with just a thin wad to hold the powder. I can say with confidence that no one who has seen this gun has ever seen a gun of this quality with no markings. If you have I would like to hear from you. Price: $15,000.00

Good gun alert: a nice looking Lefever double in 16 gauge…

16 gauge Syracuse Lefever Double Barrel Shotgun, 28" Damascus bbls
16 gauge Syracuse Lefever Double Barrel Shotgun, 28″ Damascus bbls

The sixteen was never America’s favorite gauge  Even though all our makers built 16s, the gauge that was most popular with us was the twelve. There’s a simple reason for this: versatility. Most American shooters were opportunistic. They shot everything from waterfowl to rabbits and upland game. A twelve could handle all this action.

But the sixteen always had lot of fans – and for good reason. For an upland game it’s hard to beat. Slightly larger than a standard 20, it handles a bit more lead if required. It’s also feel better in your hands  (at least it does in mine).

16 gauge Syracuse Lefever Double Barrel Shotgun, 28" Damascus bbls
16 gauge Syracuse Lefever Double Barrel Shotgun, 28″ Damascus bbls

Of all the America makers, Lefever made the fewest 16 gauge double barrels.  Daniel Myron Lefever was one of the geniuses of American gunmaking. Born in 1835, he started making firearms under his own name in 1857.  In 1880 he formed the Lefever Arms Co in Syracuse, NY. The company was only around until 1919, and in that time they only built around 65,000 shotguns. I’m not sure how many of these were 16s, but I bet the number is under 10%.

The 16 gauge Lefever you see here is a G or an H grade, probably made around 1897. The G and H grade were the lower end of the SxS shotguns Lefever made, and they compared to L.C. Smith’s #2 and Parker’s GH grade doubles.

Here’s more about this Lefever from the seller:

Lefever Sidelock 16 GA:  28″ damascus bbls, Full & Full chokes, double triggers, 14″ LOP, 6 1/4lbs. Metal has little finish remaining but bores remain excellent. Lockup is tight and solid. Shotgun barrels – how thin did makers really make them?

Shotgun barrel wall thickness gauge, from Connecticut Shotgun
Barrel wall thickness gauge

I was up at the James D. Julia Auction Company a few weeks ago looking over the shotguns in their March 11 & 12 sale. A lot of doubles caught my eye – from this great 16 gauge Woodwards O/U to this fantastic, 12 gauge J.P. Sauer Deluxe.

There were lots of nice American shotguns there, too, and I spent a while looking over the 20 gauge Parker and the 12 gauge Lefever shown below. Both guns impressed me with their crisp, original condition. Wanting to know about them, I looked them up in the auction catalog and I was shocked to see how thin the barrel walls were on both side-by-sides.

EXCEPTIONAL SPECIAL ORDER EARLY STYLE LEFEVER HEAVY GAME GUN. SN 16438. “Cal. 12 ga, 2-3/4″ Chambers… has 30”. Excellent, as found.  Bbls retain 80 – 90% orig blue. Bore diameter: left-.732, right -.732. Bore restrictions: left – Full, Mod. Weight: 7 lbs. 9 oz. Wall thickness: left -.020, right -.016.”

Afterwards, I went back to both guns and took a long look at the barrels. After a lot of close looking, I couldn’t find any signs of repairs to the barrels. They had to be original. That means the barrels left the factory with those thin spots.

To learn more about bbl wall thickness and it’s importance, check out this article: Thoughts on Barrel Wall Thicknesses from the Parke Gun Collector’s Association. It’s interesting to see what people think today, and what the gunmakers thought back when they were putting these shotguns together.

Good gun alert: a real nice 20 gauge Lefever H grade…

20 gauge H-grade Lefever side-by-side double barrel shotgun
20 gauge H-grade Lefever side-by-side double barrel shotgun

Of all the classic American shotgun makers, the Lefever Arms Co. made the fewest dobules. From 1880 to 1919, the company turned out around 65,000 side by sides. Of these, 20 gauge Lefevers are on of the hardest gauges to find, and nice 20 gauge Lefevers like this with original 28″ barrels are super hard to come by.

If you really want one of these, you may to snatch it up. Even though the price is steep, the chances of you finding a better one are pretty slim.

The 14 gauge: no one ever loved it…

100 Winchester 14 gauge paper shotgun shells
100 Winchester 14 gauge paper shotgun shells

The history of the shotgun is littered with innovations that never went anywhere. From designs like this 10 gauge from Ethan Allen to the American Arms Co.’s Fox-patent Side Opener, some ideas sounded good, but never really caught on. The 14 gauge was another of ideas that never went anywhere.

Fourteen gauge shotguns used to be popular in the percussion era, and Parker, Lefever and several British & German makers built 14s at the end of the 19th century and into the twentieth. Winchester even tried to revive this oddball gauge in 1960s with a line of Model 50/59 semi-autos.

100 Winchester 14 gauge paper shotgun shellsBut no matter what makers have done, the 14 gauge has never caught on. That’s what makes this case of 14 gauge paper shells by Winchester so rare. I’m sure some cartridge collector will snap these up. I’m sure the price will be pretty high, too.

On Gunbroker.com now: a real early 16 gauge Lefever double barrel shotgun…

16 gauge Lefever E-grade Thumb Lifter Shotgun
16 gauge Lefever E-grade Thumb Lifter Shotgun

Daniel Myron Lefever was one of the geniuses of American gunmaking. Born in 1835, he started making firearms under his own name in 1857. Fifteen years later he was working with machinist Francis Dangerfield. Together they patented a doll’s head, thumb lift locking mechanism for breechloading shotguns.

In 1883, Lefever used part of this design on his new barrel-cocking hammerless shotgun, the first of its kind created in the US. The 16 gauge Lefever Arms Co. E grade you see here is built on those two patents. Made around 1886, it’s one of the first sixteens that the Lefever Arms Co. produced. From what I can see, it looks like it’s in pretty original condition. The only issue I can see with it is with the bbls: They’re short (26″) and possibly cut. Other than that, this125+ years old side-by-side looks like it in excellent shape.

Sure it’s gorgeous. But is this Lefever legit?

12 gauge Lefever Arms Co. Presentation Grade SxS double barrel shotgun
12 gauge Lefever Arms Co. Presentation Grade SxS double barrel shotgun

Factory records are great ways to double check the original specs on a vintage shotgun, and referring to these records is a must do if you’re thinking about buying any big-money double. Fortunately, collector’s clubs make it easy to check the records on doubles like L.C. Smiths, Parkers, Foxes. But if you’re into Lefevers, you’re out of luck. Those factory records disappeared years ago.

So what do you when you see a Lefever like this? The seller is calling it a “Presentation” grade gun. It certainly is beautiful. But is it legit? Without the maker’s records to check the serial number against, it’s hard to say.

12 gauge Lefever Arms Co. Presentation Grade SxS double barrel shotgun
12 gauge Lefever Arms Co. Presentation Grade SxS double barrel shotgun

Lefever Arms Co. never made an official “Presentation” grade shotgun, so there are no others to compare this one to. This shotgun may have been a special order or a one-off made for an exhibition. The Lefever Arms Co. did make special order guns, and if you had the dough, Uncle Dan would make it. And a lot of companies made up extra ornate guns for events like world fairs and international expos. So it’s possible that this Lefever was made at the factory and is 100% right on.

12 gauge Lefever Arms Co. Presentation Grade SxS double barrel shotgun
12 gauge Lefever Arms Co. Presentation Grade SxS double barrel shotgun

But it’s also possible that this shotgun is an upgrade, made well after the Lefever Arms Co. went out of business. If that’s the case, whoever did the work was an absolute master. Just check out how nice the carving and gold inlays are on the action. The stock is well done, too.

Whatever the case is with this side by side, it sure it’s a nice looking Lefever.

Here’s more about it from the seller:

Lefever, Presentation, 12ga, 30” barrel, choked M/F: Lefever Arms company. Double trigger, gold washed triggers. Straight grip, AE, Krupp steel barrels, splinter forend, step lock plates, sculptured barrels. We have handled $1000 grade and Uncle Dan grade, but in our opinion we feel this is the most ornate Lefever to come to market. Multiple raised and flat gold inlays, all surrounded with oak leaf engraving. The very finest checkering that we have ever seen performed on a gun. Old ventilated pad, majority of case color remaining. The very finest ever offered. For pricing please e-mail inquiry.
