Auction alert: 20g Browning Superposed OU …

The shotgun you see here is the only over-under I consider to be both vintage and American. Even this Superposed was made in Belgium, it was designed by John Moses Browning — one of America’s most famous gunmakers.

This 20g is coming up in Poulin Auctions Spring 2019 sale, being held 3/30/2019 – 4/2/2019.

I spent a lot of time at flea markets when I was a kid. I never knew what I would find. Of course, that was a big part of their allure.

Gunrunner Online Auctions remind me of those flea markets. I’ve been watching their sales for years and sometimes a double pops up that interests me. Here’s one of them.

Twenty-gauge Browning Lightnings are great shotguns for grouse, woodcock & quail hunting. This one has seen a little refinishing, which should keep the hammer price down and make it a great deal.

Auction alert: a nice 20g Browning Superposed Lightning from 1952…

Browning Belgium Superposed Lightning 20 Gauge
Browning Belgium Superposed Lightning 20 Gauge

John Moses Browning was one of the most inventive minds in firearms. Born in 1855, he awarded his first patent at age 24. Between then and when he died in 1926, he designed and patented for everything from pistols and shotguns to rifles, machine guns, and cartridges. Mr Browning’s last design was for the famous Suporposed shotgun. Even though he passed away in 1926, his design was completed and introduced in 1931. The Superposed would go on to become one of the world’s great shotguns.

The 20 gauge Browning Superposed you see here looks like it’s in great shape. If you’re a collector, or if you would like to buy a classic shotgun that’s still basically brand-new, this is the one for you. This gun is on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends this Wednesday, 5/21, @ 2:44:08 PM ET.

20 gauge Browning Superposed Round Knob, Long Tang Over-Under Shotgun
20 gauge Browning Superposed Round Knob, Long Tang Over-Under Shotgun

One of the best shotguns to ever come out of America were Browning’s line of Superposeds. Created by John Browning and made in Belgium, the Superposed was introduced to the US in 1931 as a 12 gauge with the 20 gauge coming into this country in 1949.

The 20 gauge Superposed you see here was made in 1965 and it’s in excellent original condition. I’m interested to see how much it will bring. With great looking wood and high, easy-to-shoot dimensions, I think it would the perfect grouse gun — and something a lot of guys would like to own.

See what salt wood did to this Browning Superposed…

Browning’s problems with salt wood is a story that has been told many times (you can read all about it here). On the pic below you see what this salt wood did to guns. This O/U is a 20g Browning Superposed Lightning from 1968 – prime salt-wood time. Check out how that salt is eating away at the gun — not good.

When it comes to vintage shotguns, original condition is king. The more original condition a double has, the more people want it — 100% of the time. OK, but how much more are they really willing to pay for it?

Check out these two 20 gauge Browning Superposed Lightnings that just sold over at GunRunnerAuctions.com.

This first one was made in 1961. It has 26 1/2″ barrels and it’s is in excellent, all original condition. The selling price: $2520.

Now take a look at this one. Even though it was made in 1962, and its essentially the same shotgun, it sold for $1300. It even has 28″ bbls, something guys really want today.

So why did it sell for so much less? Because someone messed with the stock. Cutting it and then adding that spacer and pad chopped off $1220 of the shotgun’s value.
