Good gun alert: A great looking 16 gauge Merkel O/U…

Merkel 16 Gauge 200E O/U Shotgun
Merkel 16 Gauge 200E O/U Shotgun

If you’re looking for a nice O/U, here’s a 16 gauge German double that deserves your attention. This Merkel was made in 1951, and even though it’s 60+ years old, it looks pretty much new. These older Merkel over-unders are solid and incredibly well made. Even though they look a little beefy, they are surprisingly nimble shotguns.

This one weighs just over 6lbs — lighter than a lot of modern 20s — and with 28″ barrels, double triggers, and high dimensions, it would be perfect for upland hunting.

I think Merkel introduced their 200-line of O/U shotguns right after WW2.  The 200s were built on triggerplate-style, Blitz actions and used double Kersten locks (with no underbolt) to lock up. The E in 200E stands for Ejectors. Even though the 200 were one of the least expensive O/Us Merkel offered, they were still pricey. Comparable models offered in the ’20s cost as much as a new 12g A.H. Fox XE. Personally, I think the Merkels were the better shotgun.

Good gun alert: a 12 gauge Ruger Stainless Steel O/U…

12 gauge Ruger Stainless Steel Double Barrel Over Under Shotgun
12 gauge Ruger Stainless Steel Double Barrel Over Under Shotgun

I’ve had a passion for double-barrels my whole life. Ruger’s Red Labels were the shotguns that lit that flame for me, and even though I’ve a lot of negative things about these Over-and-Unders, I’ve always liked them. I’ve toyed with the idea of buying one in 28-gauge, but never followed through with the whim.

Introduced in 1977, the Red Label was America’s first mass-made O/U. As a kid, I remember seeing them at the local gunshop. They were usually the finest shotgun there, and they were always behind the counter. I could only admire them with my eyes, but I could see enough to know that I wanted one.

I’m not sure when Ruger introduced their stainless-steel line of “All Weather” Red Labels (the actions on Red Labels were always stainless steel). With black synthetic stocks, the All Weather are as close to a Black Gun as I’ve ever seen in a double. That being said, they do look perfect for sea ducks, or for hunting from a blind in crappy, waterfowling weather.

Here’s more about this one from the seller:

My 5 favorite doubles, powered by Gunsinternational.com…

W & C Scott Kinmount 20 gauge double barrel shotgun
W & C Scott Kinmount 20 gauge double barrel shotgun

Here they are, my five favorite doubles that popped up last week on Gunsinternational.com…

-W & C Scott Kinmount in 20 Gauge : a lot of gun for the money. Kinmounts were made between 1980-1985. This 20 gauge has 2 ¾” chambers, a straight grip, ejectors, modern dimensions (14″ LOP, 2 1/8″ DAH, 1 1/2″ DAC) and it’s cased. Fairly priced, but try and beat them down a bit (why not?)

James Purdey 450 x 3 1/4″ BPE Cased in vintage oak and leather:  Excellent bore and gun in very nice original condition. Ina vintage oak and leather case with label. This may be a step or two down from their Best quality. Regardless, it’s still classy and very cool. Probably 140+ years old.

L.C. Smith F-grade 12 gauge hammer shotgun
L.C. Smith F-grade 12 gauge hammer shotgun

-L C Smith Hammergun : a nice looking 12g F-grade with 28” fluid steel bbls and lots of original color. Two words: classic & American.

H. Barella Cape Gun 16 gauge/8x57JR combo:  Have you ever been walking home from your deer stand and flushed a grouse? This cape gun is just what you need. Perfect if you want to stand out at deer camp, too.

Boss & Co., 12 gauge side by side shotgun, late 1920s
Boss & Co., 12 gauge side by side shotgun, late 1920s

Boss & Co., side-by-side, 12g : A real nice double, made in the late ‘20s. 29” bbls, 6lb 8 oz , decent dimensions (2 1/4 X 1 3/8 X 14 1/8), in its original case. Expensive, but quality like this is worth it. Go ahead, blow the kids’s college fund.

An original Boss O/U catalog…

I wanted this 20 page Boss O/U catalog. It’s the only one like it that I’ve ever seen and it was on Ebay. I really wanted it, but in the end I didn’t want it enough. It’s closing price was $422. That’s over $20 a page!

BTW: this is the Boss catalog you usually see on the market.
