H.J. Hussey Shotguns - IMPERIAL GRADE PAIR, CASED, BOSS SINGLE TRIGGERS, vintage firearms inc
H.J. Hussey Shotguns – IMPERIAL GRADE PAIR, CASED, BOSS SINGLE TRIGGERS, vintage firearms inc

H.J. Hussey Shotguns – IMPERIAL GRADE PAIR, CASED, BOSS SINGLE TRIGGERS, vintage firearms inc: General Specs: H.J. Hussey, Year 1902-1904, 12 Gauge, 6lbs 9oz; 6lbs 8oz, SK/LM , LOP 15 1/4″, DAH 2 1/8″, DAC 1 1/2″ Serial Numbers: 14170, 14171. “LONDON BEST”…we see this label referring to fabulous side by side shotguns from famed British gunmakers with their premises located in the London gunmaker’s district.  Well-known historic names including Purdey, Holland & Holland, and Boss immediately come to mind.  However, if you discuss the topic of “LONDON BEST GUNS” with those entrenched in the British gun world, you will also hear the name H.J. Hussey, a name less known but whose guns were superb and comparable to the very finest London had to offer.  You can refer to Nigel Brown’s volumes “British Gunmakers” and/or Google the Hussey name and you will see that Henry Joseph Hussey was long involved in the upper echelons of the British gun trade.  He was Assistant Manager of Holland & Holland until 1894.  He became involved with the famed firm of Joseph Lang gunmakers, and the firm became known as Lang & Hussey for several years.  Apparently, Henry Hussey was a bit of a rogue, having been accused of shady dealings, and he resigned from that company after a short stint.  After that, his firm became known as H.J. Hussey, LTD until his death in 1918.  The fine matching pair of 12 bore Hussey guns offered here, serial numbers 14170 and 14171 ca. 1902, are LONDON BEST GUNS in every way, with 7-pin sidelock actions featuring beaded fences, finely filed bolsters on the bottom of action, gold lined cocking indicators, superb acanthus scroll with elaborate border work and adorned with the finest floral bouquets you will ever see.  The top tang is gracefully shaped and simply flows into the action.  VERY RARELY SEEN ARE THE BOSS SINGLE TRIGGERS IN THIS FINE PAIR OF HUSSEY GUNS, COMPLETE WITH THEIR REGISTERED NUMBERS. This is a very costly extra feature on a London gun, and the Boss single trigger is the most reliable ever developed.  Stocked to the fences with well-figured French walnut, including drop points and superb checkering with mullered borders, this pair is a stunning set of early London guns cased in a period oak and leather case complete with the maker’s label.  The original 28” barrels are in proof with 2 ½” chambers, excellent bores, tight ribs, and fit like new on hinge pin and standing breech.  The guns weigh within 1/2oz. of each other at 6lbs. 8oz. and have identical stock dimensions.  With chokes that would measure SK/LM in today’s world, the pair would make the ultimate driven grouse guns as well as the ultimate walk up guns for upland birds over fine dogs.  And of course, you can make quite an impression at the vintage sporting clays shoots as well.  Who shows up with a pair of Husseys!  These guns are being offered at a very attractive price, well under what you might pay for a pair from the more well-known London makers.  In fact, this pair of Husseys may be the best value on the finest pair of London guns on the market today and a great investment opportunity for those that love fine guns and the shooting sports. Price: $21,900

E.J. CHURCHILL PREMIER QUALITY OVER UNDER DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS PAIR
E.J. CHURCHILL PREMIER QUALITY OVER UNDER DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS PAIR

E.J. CHURCHILL PREMIER QUALITY OVER UNDER DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS PAIR: BOTH GUNS ARE THE SAME DIMENSIONS, 28″ SOLID RIB, CHOKED .007″ AND .014″ with 2 3/4″ CHAMBERS, DOUBLE TRIGGERS, EJECTORS, FIELD FOREARM, PISTOL GRIP, CHECKERED BUTT MINT CONDITION MAKERS CASE, 7 LBS 4 0Z, DIMENSIONS: 2″ DAH,1 9/16″ DAC, 14 1/8″ LOP. Matched pair E.J. Churchill O/U The Premier Quality.  12 Bore game guns.  Gun I made in 1926, Gun II Made in 1929. Serial Nr. 4220 was made for Abercrombie & Fitch and 3173 for a Mr. Wilson in San Francisco. They were both originally pigeon guns with 32” barrels. They were matched up as a pair and re-barreled to 28” through Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang, and Don Masters chocked IC/M and probably restocked by the maker, work which was done for a Danish nobleman whose coat of arms are on the escutcheon.  Both guns have a full London proof.  The actions of these guns are exact copies of the Woodward O&U actions, and were made by the firm of Hills, who also made the actions for Woodward. It was said at the time that Woodward built the Over & Under guns for Bob Churchill. This may be indeed true, but it is not likely, I believe Hill did all the actioning and in addition, they both used the same outworkers. A marked difference is the ejector system, which differs from Woodward and shows the Churchill input, as Bob Churchill felt it needed improvement. In total only 15 Over & Under guns were built by Churchill before WWII, of which this pair is believed to be in the best condition of those remaining.  One of these guns is pictured in the book “The House of Churchill” by Don Masters. Price: $46,500

W&C Scott Best Sidelock Double; 1878 Birmingham Production/London Retailed; 12 Bore; 30″ Damascus Steel Barrels; Choked: Modified & Improved Cylinder; LOP: 14 1/8″ ; Cast: Noticeably Off

Back in the ’90s, most hammer guns were curiosities few people were interested in. But thanks to magazines like The Doublegun Journal and organizations like The Vintagers, these old SxSs became the must-have doubles everyone wanted. Old ones that wouldn’t have brought $500 in 1995 were selling for $2,500 by 2005.

As a result, gun dealers grabbed every hammer gun they could find, slapped a high price on it, and made money. So today harder than ever to find nice, original hammer guns at decent prices. That being said, the W & C Scott sidelock SxS hammergun you see here appears to just that – nice, original and, because it’s a no-reserve auction, fairly priced.

When this gun was made, W & C Scott’s best-quality gun was The Premier Gun. This isn’t a Premier. Instead, it’s a high-quality, hand built, medium-grade gun. It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the listing ends on 8/30/2018 @ 9:31 PM, EST.

W&C Scott Best Sidelock Double; 1878 Birmingham Production/London Retailed; 12 Bore; 30″ Damascus Steel Barrels; Choked: Modified & Improved Cylinder; LOP: 14 1/8″ ; Cast: Noticeably Off

Beautiful W&C Scott Sidelock Double that was was manufactured at the Birmingham works in 1878 for retail through Scott’s London storefront. A bespoke piece with features, dimensions and appointments tailored to order, the gun features 30″, twin-beaded, browned Damascus barrels joined by a solid rib, manual extractor, wonderfully figured English Walnut pistol grip stock capped with a checkered buttplate of horn, and embellishment in the form of 70% engraving coverage. Brilliantly performed by one of the era’s finest artists, the engraving consists of classic, English vine-and-scroll highlighted by a Spaniel and Setter on either flank, each dog chasing an egret and a pheasant, respectively. The engraving extends to both the barrel and bolsters, while the blued trigger guard is adorned with a matching game bird. Wonderfully finished and in a remarkable state of preservation, the gun has seen no restoration, refinish or refreshing, with unfaded engraving, vivid Damascus star patterns on the barrel, while the receiver is awash in original case color. A wonderful find for the discriminating enthusiast, this Scott undoubtedly saw regular use followed by intervals of maintenance, likely by the original maker. Appearing ready for the field for decades to come, the gun locks up tightly, exhibits

bits superior balance and both bores are pristine. A true classic from a British icon, this all-original early W&C Scott Sidelock would be an outstanding addition to any advanced collection.

Condition

Very fine, the gun has seen no refinish, and retains better than 70% naturally softening case color on the frame and hammers, with the areas of selected bluing displaying almost no finish loss apart from subtle fading. The barrels have largely turned to a brown-tinged steel patina with 70% Damascus pattern. There is light oxidation along the outside of the barrels with rubbing around the muzzle-no rust or pitting is present on any metal surface. The markings are correct, with matching numbers on all components and no fading of the engraving. No import or export mark is present and the gun has not been reproved. The furniture shows light, consistent wear to the checkering and no cracks, chips, sanding or refreshing. Mechanically excellent, both bores are on the face, lockup is tight and the action is impressive. The bores are outstanding-clean and bright with no rust, pitting or oxidation.

Webely & Scott introduced the M700s in the 1950s. These rugged, reliable SxSs were entry-level shotguns and the company made thousands of them. Each was built on Anson & Deeley-style actions–one of the most reliable shotgun designs ever created–and used just-as-proven Southgate-style ejectors.

This M700 is on Gunbroker.com now and the listing ends 6/19/2016 11:00 PM. It’s being offered at No Reserve, so you could end up getting a heck of deal.

The other W. & C. Scott Monte Carlo SxS shotgun…

W. & C. Scott Monte Carlo B SxS Shotgun, from LeroyMerz.com
W. & C. Scott Monte Carlo B SxS Shotgun, from LeroyMerz.com

From the 19th century and up until the 1950s, W. & C. Scott was one of the world’s largest gunmakers. From factories in Birmingham and the UK, they built shotguns, pistols, and rifles which were shipped throughout the world.

For decades, America was one of the biggest market for Scott’s shotguns and the Monte Carlo B was one of their most popular models. First offered in 1891 as just the Monte Carlo (I believe this is one), this shotgun was named after the famous pigeon shooting events in Monte Carlo. Initially, it was the company’s least expensive sidelock and built to “…meet the want of a good English-built gun, at a moderate price. Over time, the Monte Carlo B became more of mid-grade guns for the company, and it was offered up until WW2 and maybe into the 1950s.

W. & C. Scott Monte Carlo B SxS Shotgun, from LeroyMerz.com

A few years after the Monte Carlo was first introduced in 1891, W. & C. Scott split the model into two grades — the Monte Carlo A and the Monte Carlo B. I’ve seen lots of Monte Carlo Bs. The engraved pigeon on the lockplates are the give away. But this is very first Monte Carlo A I’ve com across. As you can see, it has a bit more engraving and finishing on the action. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same gun, just priced a little higher. Perhaps that’s why it was never very popular.

W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle
W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle

W. & C. Scott used to one of the UK’s biggest — and greatest — gunmakers. Founded in 1832 by brothers William and Charles Scott, it joined with P. Webley in 1897 to create Webley & Scott, and they retained the name W. & C. Scott for use on their finest firearms.

Up into the 20th century, W. & C. Scott and then Webley & Scott built thousands and thousands of shotguns in all sorts of grades and configurations. What they didn’t build a lot of were double rifles — or at least ones bearing the Webley & Scott or W. & C. Scott name.

W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle

So the one you see here is a pretty rare double. It looks like it’s an upper-middle grade sidelock made on a Rogers-patent action. When it was built, it was probably a couple steps down from Scott’s top gun: The Imperial Premier.

Even the factory jewelling at the breech face remains strong and clear (see photos). Price: $8,950

The gun was bought new in 1985 from Holland & Holland for 3,330 pound Sterling with the case and has been a one owner gun since. That was right at $4657 U.S. dollars in 1985. Abercrombie & Fitch imported several of the roughly 200 Model Chatsworth’s made in the 1980 to 1990 period. This piece doesn’t have any apologies and remains in excellent plus condition.  Here is a piece that came from the Premier Works after Webley & Scott discontinued their production in 1979. In 1980 Mr. Patrick Whatley was the managing director of the new W&C Scott shop and had about 26 craftsmen at the facility, most from Webley & Scott. Mr. Whatley began as a gunmaker with Webley & Scott in 1947. Then in 1985 Holland & Holland bought all the assets of W&C Scott and it continued on from there with the Scott and H&H then offered their own new boxlock gun. Price: $6,500

12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood
12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood

I love old W. & C. Scotts, especially Premiers. They’re one of the apexes of gunmaking, and in their day, they were one of the finest guns made (and extremely expensive). Scott sold a lot of them to American shooters, and most of the ones you see on the market today are hammerless models like this one, and, occasionally, bar-action hammerguns like this.

But here’s a W & C Scott Premier hammergun unlike any others I’ve ever seen. It’s a 12g Premier hammergun built on a bar-in-wood style action. A few years ago, a dealer called Mid South advertised one of these. I wonder if it’s the same gun? Actually, I hope it’s not.

12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood
12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood

On this one, some knucklehead F-up the bbls. They’re cut, and the chambers have been lengthened. Other than that, it’s a stunning shotgun, and it looks like it’s in great shape. When I first saw it, I was on the phone right away. I had 1/2 the dealer’s number punched in before I read the part about the barrels. Then I hung up. That kind of shit is a deal killer for me.

BTW: A gunsmith friend of mine told me that a lot of the English bar-in-wood shotguns he has seen came out of the same shop in Birmingham – at least in the early stages. This includes bar-in-woods with famous names like James Purdey on them.

This guns looks like the some of the Purdey bar-in-woods I’ve seen. I wonder if it originated in this same place.

Ithaca Grade 4E 16 Gauge SxS Shotgun. FLUES, 97% FACTORY CASE COLOR, NICEYear 1920, 16 Gauge, 7lbs 4oz. This gun, sn330025 built in 1920 is a great example, with 97% vivid factory case color, 92% factory barrel blue, 98% factory trigger guard blue, and near new highly figured factory finished wood with beautiful flor-de-lis checkering.  This is a HIGH CONDITION FACTORY ORIGINAL GUN.  Even the jewelling at the breech face is still evident.  The only thing that seems to be altered since the gun left the factory are the chokes, as the gun is stamped “4 & 4″ which would indicate F/F chokes.  The 28” barrels are presently choked IC/M (.007/.017) with their double ivory beads and mirror bores.  This is a gun for heavy work, with minimum wall thickness of 36 thousandths and weighing 7 1/4lbs.  What a great sporting clays gun or pheasant gun for heavy loads!  Engraved by the famous Joseph Loy, with his trademark signature, the gun is near new in all ways, including being tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun.  This is a single trigger gun that still has the ornate factory butt plate and great stock dimensions.  A great investment in an American treasure.  Price: $5,250

W. C. Scott & Sons SXS 10 GA, 30″ barrels Full and Full 14″ LOP 9.8 pounds great bores nice tight lockup.

This shotgun is an  W. & C. Scott Excellentia Triplex, Scott’s B-grade hammerless double and one step down from The Premier, their best quality double. (Scott also made at least two back-action “Premier Extra Specials” during this time, but I don’t think that grade was ever officially offered by the company.) The color-case hardening is fantastic and I love the acorns chiseled on the locks and action. The brown on the bbls is great, too and so is the blueing (note: Those bbls were browned originally and never finished in black & white like some people believe). Check out the shape of the stock, too. Nobody makes stocks like that anymore.

Scott made back-action Excellentia’s from 1884 to 1888. I think this one was made in 1887. It’s on a Scott & Baker patent action and it has Scott & Baker patent gas checks, a version of Scott’s patent Triplex Lever Grip and Crystal Cocked Indicators and Needham & Hinton-patent Block Safety (intercepting sears) on the locks. What a gun.

If you have a Scott shotgun and are looking to find out more about it or sell it, please let me know. I would be happy to help you with it.

SPECTACULAR W & C SCOTT & SON PREMIER QUALITY TOP LEVER HAMMER GUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES
SPECTACULAR W & C SCOTT & SON PREMIER QUALITY TOP LEVER HAMMER GUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES

Here’s one for my Gallery of Great Guns. This is a 10 gauge W & C Scott Premier-grade hammergun, made around 1878. James D. Julia Auctions had this gun in their Fall, 2008 sale. It sold for $13,800.As you can see, this Scott in spectacular original condition, with fantastic color case hardening and beautiful barrel browning. On top of its condition, it’s also in its original case – something that’s very hard to find on any gun that 100+ years old.

Back when this side-by-side was made, The Premier Quality was W & C Scott’s finest shotgun. It was also cutting edge, and it came with almost all of the company’s newest innovations: their patent toplever/action spindle, their patent takedown lever on the forend, their patent adjustable front lump on the barrels, and rebounding hammers. Centerfires were still new back in the 1870s, so whoever ordered this gun

Good gun alert: a nice looking 16g Webley & Scott Model 700…

Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F
Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F

I’ve raved about Webley & Scott’s Model 700 shotguns a bunch of times. Rugged and dependable, the M700 was introduced in the 1950s as an entry-level shotgun and it went of to become one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made. While 12 gauge Model 700s are easy to find, 16 gauges are not. The one you see here is on Gunbroker.com now and the auction ends on 11/16/2014 3:07:58 PM ET.

The Brits were never big fans of 16s. But here in the US, a small number of upland hunters have preferred them. Sixteens tend to weigh less than twelves, and they push more than enough lead to drop any grouse, woodcock, or quail.

Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F: Scarce 16 gauge English shotgun by Webley and Scott Birminham England. Gun is 98% original finishes, tight as the day it was made. Nice color case frame and perfect dent free barrels with bright bores. Factory marked 2 3/4 chambers proofed for 3 1/4 tons ejectors are timed and work flawlessly. Wood is a nice grade of English walnut, double triggers 14 1/2 over checkered but. 1 3/8 comb 2 1/8 heal. slight cast for right hand shooter. Auto safety 6lbs-1/4 oz Chokes are .011/.035 both bores are .662.

12 gauge Webley & Scott SxS Shotgun @ Cherry’s Fine Guns

New to side-by-sides and looking for a good buy? Then check out this 12g Webley & Scott Model 700 listed at Cherry’s Fine Guns (Scroll down-it’s near the end of the list.)

This twelve gauge is more than enough gun for upland hunting. For pheasants, you can load it up with 1 1/8oz of shot. If you’re after quail or woodcock, you go down to 7/8oz. And on a sporting-clays course, Winchester’ Featherlight rounds should work just fine (if this gun’s 2 3/4″ chambers are original – something to have checked out before you guy the gun.

Webley & Scott introduced the M700 in the 1950s as an entry-level shotgun and it went of to become one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made. Built on an Anson & Deeley-style style action with Southgate ejectors, they’re workhorses that can handle lots of shooting, season after season.

If this one is as nice and original as it looks, the price is very fair.

Beretta SO 2 12ga. Sidelock O/U Shotgun with 27 1/2″ Bbls

Beretta SO 2 12ga. Sidelock O/U Shotgun with 27 1/2″ Bbls: M/F, made in 1957 Used One Time . This gun is as new except that the previous owner had more dollars than sense . Looks like at the most a box of shells was fired , but he must have got at least one pheasant as he left a spot of blood on the lower right side barrel and it slightly pitted . It was stored all these years and never used again . We cleaned the spot up and in the right light you can see it but would have to look for it ! ( See photo ) We also replaced the rock hard White Line vented pad w/a new one . This gun is tight – just like a new one at the Beretta Store . This is maybe as close as you can get to a new 1957 hand made sidelock Beretta . Wood looks good . Great closet queen looking to get out once in a while . LOP is 14 3/4 , weight 7# . Price: $5,995
