J. Rigby & Co.  10 ga. Magnum Side-by-Side ShotgunThis is the real deal – 32″ barrels choked extra full/extra full (.050/.050), 3-1/2″ chambers, 4 ton proof, a really rare gun, I’ve never seen one like this.  Automatic ejectors, double triggers.  Sidelock action with Rigby’s signature drop edge lockplates.  Carved leaf fences, doll’s head locks off the toplever,  Rigby London in gold on the top rib and the locks.  Traditional Rigby foliate scroll.  Rich, bold case colors complement the oversize action.  Beavertail forend, full pistol grip stock with grip cap of straight grained English walnut, measures 1-1/2″ comb x 1-7/8″ heel x 14-1/2 LOP over a 3/4″ pad.  The gun retains 99% of its color and lustrous Johnson’s barrel black.  Minor handling marks in the finish as this gun has seen just a bit of use.  Lots of front end bias – you will not stop your swing with this one!  Built in 1985, most likely when Rigby was located in Covent Garden, London.  Just a really special gun and possibly one-of-a-kind!  Weighs 9 lbs. Cased.  Price: $39,500

Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F
Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F

I’ve raved about Webley & Scott’s Model 700 shotguns a bunch of times. Rugged and dependable, the M700 was introduced in the 1950s as an entry-level shotgun and it went of to become one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made. While 12 gauge Model 700s are easy to find, 16 gauges are not. The one you see here is on Gunbroker.com now and the auction ends on 11/16/2014 3:07:58 PM ET.

The Brits were never big fans of 16s. But here in the US, a small number of upland hunters have preferred them. Sixteens tend to weigh less than twelves, and they push more than enough lead to drop any grouse, woodcock, or quail.

A nice 12g Webley & Scott Model 700 SxS shotgun…

12 gauge Webley & Scott SxS Shotgun @ Cherry's Fine Guns
12 gauge Webley & Scott SxS Shotgun @ Cherry’s Fine Guns

New to side-by-sides and looking for a good buy? Then check out this 12g Webley & Scott Model 700 listed at Cherry’s Fine Guns (Scroll down-it’s near the end of the list.)

This twelve gauge is more than enough gun for upland hunting. For pheasants, you can load it up with 1 1/8oz of shot. If you’re after quail or woodcock, you go down to 7/8oz. And on a sporting-clays course, Winchester’ Featherlight rounds should work just fine (if this gun’s 2 3/4″ chambers are original – something to have checked out before you guy the gun.

Webley & Scott introduced the M700 in the 1950s as an entry-level shotgun and it went of to become one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made. Built on an Anson & Deeley-style style action with Southgate ejectors, they’re workhorses that can handle lots of shooting, season after season.

If this one is as nice and original as it looks, the price is very fair.

Beretta SO 2 12ga. Sidelock O/U Shotgun with 27 1/2″ Bbls

Beretta SO 2 12ga. Sidelock O/U Shotgun with 27 1/2″ Bbls: M/F, made in 1957 Used One Time . This gun is as new except that the previous owner had more dollars than sense . Looks like at the most a box of shells was fired , but he must have got at least one pheasant as he left a spot of blood on the lower right side barrel and it slightly pitted . It was stored all these years and never used again . We cleaned the spot up and in the right light you can see it but would have to look for it ! ( See photo ) We also replaced the rock hard White Line vented pad w/a new one . This gun is tight – just like a new one at the Beretta Store . This is maybe as close as you can get to a new 1957 hand made sidelock Beretta . Wood looks good . Great closet queen looking to get out once in a while . LOP is 14 3/4 , weight 7# . Price: $5,995

A Webley & Scott 12 gauge hammergun…about as modern as they get.

12 gauge Webley & Scott hammergun, 30" bbls
12 gauge Webley & Scott hammergun, 30″ bbls

I love hammerguns, but while they have their pluses, one of their drawbacks is that most of them are real old – usually 125 years plus. A lot can happen to a gun in a century plus — poor cleaning, shoddy repairs, rough handling — and mistreatment can add up over the years and really take a toll on a gun.

The gun you see here caught my eye for a couple reasons. First, it’s relatively young for a hammergun. Made in the early years of the 20th century, it’s about as modern as British hammerguns get. Then there’s the fluid-steel barrels. Most quality hammerguns were made back in the days of damascus steel. Finally, it looks like it’s in excellent condition, and it even comes in its original case.

Webley & Scott 12ga Hammer Shotgun, 30″ bbls: Absolutely beautiful old W&S hammer gun with class and condition! Light as a feather at exactly 7lbs flat. Gun has a ton of condition and deminsions you could only dream of in a gun from this era! Real mans gun with a 14 5/8″ LOP with only 2 1/4″ DAH, I bet you could shoulder hundreds to find one with these total modern dimisions?? The pictures tell the whole story on this neat old English Straight Griped gun. FLUID STEEL barrels are 30″ long with IC/IM chokes with mirror bores,British Proofed 1904, still in the factory makers leather case , Extreamely nice for the classy collector,if you can find another one this good it will be twice this money, What a dandy!  Price: $3,295

Webley & Scott Model 700 20 bore 28" barrels Made in England
Webley & Scott Model 700 20 bore 28″ barrels Made in England

I’ve written this before, but if  Webley & Scott is the Ford of British gunmaker, the Model 700 is their F150 pickup. Introduced in the 1950’s, the rugged and reliable M700 was the double of choice for thousands of shooters in the UK and Europe.

But almost all those Webleys were 12 gauges. The Brits have never loved the smaller bores, and their gunmakers have never made 16s & 20s in great numbers. That’s one of the things that makes the side-by-sides you see here special. The other thing that makes them unique is their condition. Both of these SxSs look new – pretty impressive when you consider they’re at least 40 years old.

Good Gun Alert: a Webley & Scott Model 700 12 gauge…

This 12 gauge Model 700 side-by-side on Gunbroker.com is a great example of how good a gun they could build, and of how a nice double don’t have to cost a fortune. It would be great for grouse and woodcock. Because it has been inspected, overhauled and maintained by one of the top gunsmiths in the country, you know it will be surprise free.

Good gun alert: 20 gauge Webley & Scott Model 700…

Nice, clean English boxlock shotguns are tough to find–especially in anything other than 12 gauge. That’s why this 20 gauge Webley & Scott caught my eye. It’s looks like it’s in excellent, all original condition. And as a plus, it has 28″ barrels and stock looks pretty long.

20 gauge Webley & Scott double barrel shotgun

In my experience, good guns always bring good money, regardless of the economy. So I’m interested to see what this double barrel shotgun will bring. Be the high bidder and it could be going home with you.

Opening weekend in Maine, can’t wait…

Work!  It really gets in the way. If I didn’t need the money, I wouldn’t go. It’s been a busy couple of weeks at the office, so I’ve had little time for being here (or in the field). BUT tomorrow is October 1 — the best time of the year –and I’ll be out  bright and early, gun in hand, head full of hopes.

The weather is supposed to be wet, so it looks like ducks in the AM and maybe some grouse later on. I’ll be carrying a 12g Fox HE for the ducks and I’m anxious to see how I do. I’ve never hunted waterfowland I’m psyched to see it happen. My girl HATES rain, so we’ll see how things go on grouse.

There are two big auctions coming up. James Julia and Poulin’s Antiques, right to each other in Fairfield, ME, are having their annual fall firearms auctions. Poulin’s is on Saturday and Julia’s starts on Monday. Here are some highlights:
