Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32" Bernard barrels:
Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32″ Bernard barrels:

Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32″ Bernard barrels: For your consideration is something truly astounding. This is one of 10 made in this configuration. The gun is a 12ga C Grade with 32″ Bernard barrels. It is SN 39432, having been made in 1884. According to the Parker Identification and Serialization book, this was one of three consecutive guns in a row in this exact configuration. The gun itself is in incredible original condition and retains more than 60% bright original case color. Stocks retain most of their original finish with some finish added for preservation. The barrels are stunning and retain nearly all of their bold original pattern. The gun retains its original skeleton buttplate with LOP of 14-1/4″. The gun weighs 8lbs 7oz having been made on a #2 frame and has drops of 1-15/16 DAC and 2-15/16 DAH. Bores are bright and shiny and mechanics are crisp. The gun balances and swings like a dream. Bores measure .754 (rt) and .752 (left) with .034 choke in the right and .032 in the left. If you have ever wanted a truly “world class” and heirloom quality Parker hammer gun, look no further. I don’t think there is a better C Grade 32″ Bernard barreled hammer gun than this one as I have never seen or heard of one better than this in this configuration. Price: $13,950

What do you think of these insane double rifles?

Over the last few months, William Larkin Moore & Sons has posted some of the finest vintage double rifles I’ve ever seen. There’s quite a range of them, including these two droplock Westley Richards with a ton of killer original condition:

.577 Nitro Express WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Ejector, Mfg 1903,
.577 Nitro Express WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Ejector, Mfg 1903,

From the massive, like this side-by-side .577 Nitro Express WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Ejector, Mfg 1903. An elephant stomper like this can generate 7,010 Ft-lbf of punch with a 750-gr bullet — KABoom! Compare that to a .30-06, which generates 2,981Ft-lbf of smack with a 220-gr bullet.

WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Express .303 Savage Cased in Orig O&L case, Mfg 1907 Near new all original condition

With it’s lightweight, his double rifle would be perfect for deer hunting here in the States. And since it’s not a dangerous-game gun, the single trigger is just fine.

JOHN DICKSON & SON Round Body Sidelever Express .577 3" BPE Cased
JOHN DICKSON & SON Round Body Sidelever Express .577 3″ BPE Cased

The collection WLM is selling also contains stuff like super rare SxS rifle: JOHN DICKSON & SON Round Body Sidelever Express .577 3″ BPE Cased. W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition
W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

And this ‘friggin oddball OU. It’s a WW GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition. This rifle is just weird, and I can’t imagine why it was ever built. No one I know has seen another like it, and I bet it’s a one-off. On top of that, it looks new. So whoever ordered in back in 1886 never bothered to hunt with it. Maybe once they got it they realized how odd it was and decided they would take something else to Africa.

Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge
Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge

Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge: This is the first 7E Grade Ithaca we have ever seen, which is understandable since there were only 22 or 25 ever manufactured.  According to Walter C. Snyder, an Historian of the Ithaca Gun Company, this shotgun was shipped to an undisclosed location on 12/5/44.  The condition is superb, as one might expect from such a high grade shotgun, it shows almost no wear or evidence of use.  The blue and case-colors are near 100%, the bores are perfect and the highly figured American Walnut stock is ornately checkered and is in near new condition.  It appears that the only non-original part is a proper “sunburst” Ithaca marked reproduction recoil pad.  The case hardened receiver is highly engraved and has six gold inlays including 2 ducks, 2 pheasants, a dog holding a duck and a bald eagle complete with a white gold head.  The shotgun is fitted with ejectors, double gold plated triggers, and the barrels are 28 inches in length, choked full and full (0040″ + .0040″).  The stock dimensions are: 14 inch length-of-pull, 2 3/4 inch drop at the heel and 1 3/4 inch drop at the comb.  The weight is 7 lbs. 13 oz.   The 7E Grade Ithaca is one of the rarest of all American Doubles and it would be hard to find a better one.  Comes with a letter from the Chronicler of the Ithaca Gun Company dated 9/5/07.  Price: $35,000

A.H. Fox XE, SxS Shotgun, Two Barrel Set:
A.H. Fox XE, SxS Shotgun, Two Barrel Set:

A.H. Fox XE, SxS Shotgun, Two Barrel Set: This is an A.H. Fox XE 12 gauge shotgun, with a 2nd barrel set fit by Turnbull Restoration. This classic American double gun carries serial number 29317, and is dated from 1924. Metal restoration was performed by Turnbull, and included light polishing, engraving was not re-cut (see photos); color case hardening of receiver, top lever and forend iron/latch; trigger reshaped to mid-position; both sets of barrels were polished and rust blued by us. The Fox has been utilized by its owner since restoration, so it does carry some handling marks. This Fox’s original barrel set is 28″ in length. A 2nd barrel set at 26″ was fit by Turnbull Restoration and engraved to match the original set. Wood condition is very good with minor handling marks. We did not work on this Fox’s wood, and appears to have been refinished by a 3rd party at some point. We replaced the original broken grip cap. 28″ barrel set (original): Cylinder/Improved Cylinder, 2-1/2″ chambers. 26″ heavey barrel set: Improved Cylinder/Modified, 3″ chambers with long forcing cones. Price: $20,000

There are double rifles and then there are serious double rifles. Dreams of tigers and ships and palaces, fine spices and women and silk. ////////////////////////////////////////// Daniel Fraser apprenticed 7 years with the famous gunmaker Alexander Henry. In 1880 his patent #5403 became the famous falling block Fraser rifle. He was the designer of the ‘Velox’ bullet. There are very few Fraser double rifles as the original Fraser Co. did not survive after the First World War. Every Fraser and nearly every Scottish gun usually have very few apologies. Auction alert: 12g Westley Richards droplock with hidden value…

WESTLEY RICHARDS Gold NAME 12 gauge DROPLOCK SXS SHOTGUN
WESTLEY RICHARDS Gold NAME 12 gauge DROPLOCK SXS SHOTGUN

There are 4 things I love about this classy, little Best-Quality Westley Richards boxlock ejector droplock shotgun coming to auction May 7, 2018 at Poulin’s Antiques in Fairfield, ME.

1. It’s an Anson & Deeley-style boxlock. This is one of the classic British shotgun designs. Reliable & rugged, it’s been around since 1875 and is still used by Westley Richards today (those guns start at £54,500).

WESTLEY RICHARDS Gold NAME 12 gauge DROPLOCK SXS SHOTGUN
WESTLEY RICHARDS Gold NAME 12 gauge DROPLOCK SXS SHOTGUN

2. Droplocks (or”detachable locks,” as the Brits call them). Invented in 1897, droplocks are durable, easy to maintain, and just plain cool. Gunwriter Vice Venters wrote “Westley Richards hand detachable…are nothing short of a stroke of genius.”

3. Newish barrels by Westley Richards in 1954. They’re this gun’s hidden value–and a huge benefit. Even though this gun is 100+ year old, it has modern, 2 3/4″ chambers nitro-proofed for 1 1/4 ounce loads (and perfect upland chokes). That means it can shoot most easy-to-find, modern, 12-gauge ammo (just stick to light loads and lead shot).

4. Its estimate. With a low range of $3,000, it could go cheap. And if it goes anywhere with the $3-5,000 range, it’s a deal.

Lot 1014: WESTLEY RICHARDS DROPLOCK SXS SHOTGUN: Cal. 12 Ga., 2 3/4″. S# 9004. Bbls. 26″ Fluid steel w/ Nitro proofs for 1 1/4 oz. loads were new from Westley Richards in 1954. “Westley Richards” gold name model. Horn-tipped splinter forearm & straight hand stock of hand checkered fine English walnut w/ silver nameplate in toeline. LOP: 14 5/16″ over Universal solid red pad. DAC: 1 5/8″. DAH: 2 1/4″. Cast off. Bore diameter: right – .729, left – .029. Bore restriction: right – .010, left – .020. Wall thickness: right – .033, left – .030. Holloway (G&S) – 28 Gauge – B. Jenkins of NY, NY – 1952 build – 26” – M/IM – 14 3/4” LOP – 5 lbs!: A 28 Bore English Boxlock Ejector Game Gun that was imported by B. (Bob) Jenkinson, New York, N. Y. and so marked, Jenkinson imported a fair number of English guns in the 50’s & 60’s and I believe nearly all were made by Holloway, This 28 Bore was made in 1952, 26″ dovetail lump barrels at .550 .013 & .016″ (Mod. & Imp. Mod.), Original 2 3/4″ chambers, Proved in Birmingham at 3/4 ounce, Double triggers, Splinter forend with an Anson release, Straight hand stock at 14 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/4″ over a checkered butt, Slight cast-off with a swept comb that points like a dream, 28 bore weight at 5 lbs. 1 oz., 60% coverage of English scroll, Nice wood, The original barrel blue at 99%, The gun retains 98% original bright & vivid case colors, The stock finish is original and at 99%, The checkering at 100%, The blue on the floorplate, trigger guard, trigger guard tang and forend metal is 99%, The bores are as new from breech to muzzle, The gun is smack on the face with plenty of bite, The barrels ring with a nice chime. This is flat out one nice 1952 English boxlock with excellent workmanship on both the metal & wood. The stock inletting is superb and the checkering is as well cut as you will find on any English Best Sidelock. This is like buying it new in 1952. The Jenkinson serial # is 700 and the Holloway # is 22734. Holloway & Co. has been around since the 19th century. They had premises at 10-12 & 14 Vesey Street in Birmingham. In 1901 Tommy Naughton was the manager at Holloway & Co. and he bought the firm and it became Holloway & Naughton Ltd. but they continued business separately. G & S (George & Sidney) Holloway were for the most part makers to the trade and maintained an excellent reputation before and after WWII. About 1978 production of new Holloway guns was dropped but they continued with repairs. Graham Clive Holloway of G & S Holloway died in February of 1994 and that was the end of an era for G & S Holloway. To this day Holloway & Naughton shotguns are still made and manufactured to the client’s individual requirements and they can be found at hollowaynaughton.co.uk B. (Bob) Jenkinson was a dealer in many Holloway made guns during the 1950’s & 1960’s in New York City. Price: $11,995

Lefever EE Grade 12ga. SxS Shotgun – BEAUTIFUL DAMASCUS, GREAT DIMENSIONS: 1901, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 10oz, SxS Serial Number: 35307E. Most who pursue American doubles are aware that Lefever Arms Co. of Syracuse, N.Y. produced very elegant shotguns.  The engraving is better than most in its tasteful application, the frames were ornately sculpted and shaped, and the workmanship overall was superior to the competition of the day.  With the last Lefever being produced in 1919, Lefever produced relatively few guns; in the range of 50.000 or so in all grades and gauges, most being lower grade guns.  Mr. Elliot’s book “Uncle Dan Lefever—Master Gunmaker” notes few high-grade Lefevers were produced, and most gunners that search for fine American vintage double guns are aware that there are few Lefever EE Grade guns ever seen for sale, especially in great original condition.  MOST IMPORTANTLY, THIS LEFEVER, SN35307 MADE IN 1901, RETAINS PLENTY OF  FACTORY ORIGINAL CASE COLORS. Price: $4,450

The secrets of the sexy 20 gauge Westley Richards SxS …

20 gauge Westley Richards SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, 26" barrels, Westley single trigger
20 gauge Westley Richards SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, 26″ barrels, Westley single trigger

On Wednesday, I put up this post  and asked Can you guess this 20 gauge Westley Richards’ secrets?

Right away, few folks spotted this pretty little side-by-side’s special features right: sideclips, a Greener-style top bolt, and, most impressively, droplocks (AKA hand-detachable locks).

Westley Richards patented the Anson & Deeley boxlock action in 1875. Twenty-one year later, they updated it with their iconic hand detachable locks. Hand-detachable locks were to clean up the action’s appearance. After their introduction, a couple major benefits became apparent: If a lock breaks in the field, it can be replaced in a few minutes, and at the end of damp mornings or wet days, you pull the locks out for oiling and give the inside of the gun a good opportunity to dry.

Here a few things I love the 20 gauge droplock you see here:

-The beautiful cut scroll engraving

-The original Westley Richards single selective trigger

-The blushes of genuine color-case hardening

-The untouched, fancy checkering on the stock

-It’s tiny action. I hard to tell in the pictures, but its perfectly scaled to the gauge.

-It’s condition. Other than the extension on the stock (and maybe a bit of oil on the wood), this gun has not been messed with. Sure it has some dings and wear, but every one was put there

Wow – what a nice shotgun. Classic, British, and very original, this vintage 20 gauge Westley Richards SxS was completed in November in 1929 for Boston sporting goods store Bob Smith.

It has a couple secrets. See if you can spot them. In a few days, I’ll reveal them and show & tell more about this great little double.

Westley Richard’s most important invention…

Evolution of Westley Richard's doll's head & toplever. Earliest at top. From The Explora.
Evolution of Westley Richard’s doll’s head & toplever. Earliest at top. From The Explora.

So far in my tributes to Simon Clode, the former Chairman & Managing Director of Westley Richards, I’ve mentioned two of his company’s most important contributions to side by sides: The Anson & Deeley boxlock action and the Deeley ejectors. Now it’s time for WR’s third and most significant.

If you ever shot a SxS or an O/U, you’ve used it. And while it was revolutionary in its day, it’s so common and obvious now I doubt you’ve ever wondered where it came from.

So what is it? It’s the toplever.

Back in the 1850s, shotguns were moving from muzzleloaders to designs that broke open to be loaded from the breach. Lefaucheux’s pinfire was shown at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851. By the end of that decade, other makers had designs for these doubles.

Westley Richards’ version featured a doll’s head and came out in 1858. To make it function, the company patented its first style toplever the following year. This toplever reached all the way down to the nose on the stock. In the years that followed, WR cut it back to the shorter size we’re familiar with today.

Around same time WR introduced its design, other gunsmiths and gunmakers were introducing their inventions: The Jones Underlever, the Purdey thumbhole, the Daw lever. But time showed they were all two-legged stools compared to the top lever. Once Purdey patented its sliding bolt and W & C Scott came up with it’s spindle, the toplever was able to operate them and introduce a design which has been used on tens of thousands of OUs and SxS since.

Westley Richards’ interesting ejector system …

Here’s the next post in my continuing tribute to Westley Richards’ former Chairman & Managin Director Simon Clode.

I have mixed feeling about ejectors. Part of me appreciates them. Ejectors can satisfy. If you think of breaking a clay or downing a bird as a sentence, hitting your target is the verb and the shells kicking free of the chambers is the exclamation point.

Deeley sxs shotgun ejectors, contained in their "box"

But another part of me thinks ejectors just complicate things and eventually break. Some designs are unreliable, and a lot of them make it a pain to pull unshot shells from the chambers. On top of this, ejectors are absolutely unnecessary for all of shooting I, and most of us, do.

Back in the 19th century, ejectors  were brand new. While not revolutionary, they were evolutionary and a sign of how the newest shotgun designs were adapting to the newest shooting craze: driven game.

In 1885, Westley Richards patented their Deeley ejectors (nine years after their Anson & Deeley hammerless shotgun).  Self contained in a kind of box and complex, it was difficult to make. But it was also easy to install as a completed unit. This led many makers to buy finished ejectors units and install them on their own SxSs.

In this video, you can see just how complex Deeley ejectors are.

Westley Richards’ brilliant Anson & Deeley design …

Many of you know Simon Clode,  the Chairman & Managing Director of Westley Richards, passed away last week. In tribute to him, I’m putting up a series of posts dedicated to his great company.

Today’s, we’re covering one of Westley Richard’s huge contributions to the world of double barrel shotguns: The Anson & Deeley action. Patented in 1875, the A & D action was simple, rugged and easy to build. It was also revolutionary and one of the first successful “hammerless” shotgun designs created.

A: Hammer, shown forward in “fired” postion

B: Mainspring, drives hammer

C: Cocking level, tips hammer into position when bbls drop

D: The spring with hold the trigger sear (E) in place.

E: Trigger sear, releases hammer when trigger is pulled

In the late 19th and into the 20th century, it was the basis for thousands of side-by-sides made throughout the UK and across Europe. After WW2, it even found its way to Japan, where it was used by companies like Miroku and the Sakaba (SKB) Arms.

Today, a handful of companies still make true Anson & Deeley boxlocks: Westley Richards (of course) a few British and European firms, and Connecticut Shotgun (see their oddly named “Christian Hunter“).
