“Another bargain!!!”

Those are the first two words of this article I wrote for Shooting Sportsman magazine: Boxlock Bargains: Why lightweight 12s are the kings of bird guns. The two doubles you see here are perfect examples of what I was writing about.

Both are on Gunbroker.com now. The 12g OU weighs just 6 lb., 5.2 oz. and the 12g side-by-side comes in at 6 lb., 1 oz. There’s no reserve on either one, so they offer you the chance to get a great deal — and every high-quality shotgun — for little money.

Here’s your chance to bid on a couple of doubles that

Both are lightweight

Both have original 2 3/4″ chambers

Both

So why am I selling them? Ah, to buy something else, of course.

Merkel Brothers Lightweight 200E 27.5″ IC/C 12 GA, 1930:

But I think the ones made before World War Two are the nicest.

Merkel barrels on this OU are their original length

A very hard one to find

The barrels measure 70cm (which converts to 27.5″), a common length for shotguns built for the European market.

When I measured the barrels, the bores were .729″ and the minimum barrel wall thicknesses were .024″. That has to be just how they were made.

Auguste Francotte Feathweight Boxlock 12 GA 28″ IM/M Double Barrel

Anson & Deeley action, hand engraved, with almost all of its original color-case hardening

Woodward-style arcade fences, fine, hand-cut scroll engraving, a hidden third bite,

A gun that weighs just XXXX but is still in nitro proof

little used and with excellent wall thicknesses

Just look at how the triggers sit inside the bow of the triggerguard
