The very best: An incredible pair of vintage 12g Boss & Co. OUs ….

BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER UNDER SHOTGUNS-#7425/7426
BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER UNDER SHOTGUNSSHOTGUNS. SHOWING #7425 OF THE PAIR. As good as it gets.

This pair of Boss OUs from 1927 are two of the finest shotguns I’ve seen in a while.  If you want to own the best of the best, step up and write the check. These rare guns have what it takes to justify the big bucks.

  1. Original condition. Even though they’re almost 100 years old, all that color-case hardening on the action, and all the blacking on the barrels, forend iron, and other bits, looks absolutely right for pre-WW2 Bosses. The only update I see is the guns were reproofed in London for 2 3/4″ chambers (70mm).
  2. Superb quality. These OUs have the little touches that you only see on the finest British guns — share, crips edge on the action and toplever, perfectly fitted locks and forends, great proportions and curves, engraving that almost sparkles, and genuine French walnut stocks that enhance the looks the guns without stealing the show. These touches make these guns stunning and beautiful.
  3. Historical significance. Boss OUs were the most expensive shotguns in the world when this pair was made. They were built to the highest standards by some of the finest craftsmen in the British trade. They’re a direct link to everything that the golden age of British gunmaking stood for then and represents today.

According to Griffin & Howe:

“Boss & co. Pair No. 7425-6 were made in 1927 for Hendon Chubb, the founder of Chubb Insurance. This pair is unique in the fact that they were never intended to be used by just Hendon, they were also made to be shared by his son Percy Chubb; and as such were supplied with two butt pads to fit the length of pull. One set being thin black plates for Percy, and a set of walnut plates measuring one half inch longer for Hendon. Keeping with the theme that the guns were to be shared by father and son, a pair of oak and leather cases were supplied; instead of the ordinary case intended to carry both firearms. The cases are still in remarkable condition despite being nearly a century old and contain an assortment of accessories including a full cleaning kit, snap caps and of course the spare butt plates. After years of use by the Chubb’s with the original 2-1/2 chambers, the guns were Re proofed to modern 70mm chambers at the London proofing house. Eventually the guns left the possession of the Chubb’s and entered the collection of a New Jersey Collector, where they remained until early 2024 when they were taken in by Griffin & Howe in Andover New Jersey and offered up for sale.

BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER-UNDER SHOTGUNS. SHOWING #7425 OF THE PAIR. You can see how the engraving sparkles and how the curves, lines, and proportions of the action, locks, triggerguard, and stock complement each other.

The pair are the of finest quality Boss & Co. could offer,  possessing color case hardened receivers that still retain nearly all of the original color, with the wonderful fine rose and scroll engraving that Boss & Co. does so well. The barrels measure 30 inches in length and have no rib as is typical of Boss & Co O/U’s. Being a true pair, the firearms have identical bores and chokes, measuring out to an improved cylinder on the top barrel and ¼ choke on the bottom barrel. Both firearms are stocked in highly figured walnut and have a straight wrist. The fore end comes with the distinctive extended Boss style fore end iron. Lastly, the triggers. The firearms are equipped with single triggers and are true over/unders; meaning the top barrel will always fire before the bottom barrel.

In short, this pair of shotguns are a perfect example of the quality that is to be expected from Boss & Co. As this pair has a nearly a century long life to prove it.”

Boss & Co. was founded in 1812.  John Robertson took control of the company in 1893. Robertson was an A list, gunmaker-to-the-trade at the time, working for most of London’s most prestigious names. He was also a prolific inventor. The same year he took over Boss, he patented the company’s famous single trigger (the world’s first reliable single trigger); in 1897, he patented Boss-style ejectors (the best ejector system for a SxS); and in 1909 he patented the Boss OU.

Robertson had an engineer’s mind and an artist’s eyes. Mechanically, his new Boss OU was slim and elegant like a Boss SxS. It also handled like one. Aesthetically, Robertson’s OU blended lines, curves, polished/engraved surfaces, metalwork/wood and proportions in a way that made the Boss OU the most beautiful over-under shotgun ever made. They were, and are, a pinnacle of British gunmaking.

A super rare SxS: Manufrance Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” …

Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾”, @ www.dorleac-dorleac.com

Here’s one of the rarest I’ve come across. It’s a Manufrance Ideal, model Ideal D’Art. Dorleac & Dorleac L’Atelier de Chasse in Perpignan, France has it on their site.

Ideal d'Art - Type 356 "Ace of Spades" MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾", @ www.dorleac-dorleac.com
Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾”, @ www.dorleac-dorleac.com

Manufrance introduced their Ideal-model shotguns in the 1880s, around the same time that British gunmakers like James Purdey & Sons, W. & C. Scott, and Westley Richards were transitioning from hammerguns to modern hammerless designs.

Ideals are built on a simple, rugged design, and they’re extremely intuitive to use. After firing, you simply drop your finger and lift the lever behind the triggers to open and cock the gun. It’s a very slick system. You can see more Ideals and learn more about them here and here

BTW: The Manufrance Ideal is not a “Round Action”. While it shares some of the looks of a MacNaughton and a Dickson, it’s a different design and an entirely different type of gun.

Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾”:* Considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the most beautiful shotgun ever produced, the Manufrance Ideal is presented here in its most exceptional version: the “Ideal d’Art Type 356 Tir au Pigeon” model. This 1937 gun is fitted with chopper lump, five palms, “Hercules” hardened steel 30″ barrels, originally chambered 12-2¾” Gauge, choked Full / Full. The specificity of their chopper lump dovetail assembly is typical of the high-end manufacture of Manufrance. The rollers on the cartridge extractors, the sliding ejectors and the 1st articulated trigger bear witness to the meticulous care taken in manufacturing. The system is equipped with automatic double safety sears and no longer includes a conventional manual safety blocking the triggers.

The rounded action, finished in French gray, with special detonators and “Ace of Spades” reinforcements has been superbly engraved with an ornamentation mixing foliated chiseling and scrolls, an exceptional execution modestly signed BURELLIER in the left “Ace of Spades”.

The English type straight stock, made of beautiful French walnut, traditional stamp varnished, dispenses with the sling and the usual wood engravings, giving way here to a traditional flat checkering, as on the wood butt while the forend is locked by a Purdey type latch.

With a 14½” LOP this extraordinarily balanced side-by-side gun weights 6lb 15oz. This Ideal seems to have been sparely used, the locking remains tight and the barrel bores are perfectly glass smooth, without any alteration. No traces of disassembly have marked any screws and the tubes slow rust blue is the original one.

Incredible Holland & Holland No. 2 16 ga. SxS London Sidelock
Incredible Holland & Holland No. 2 16 ga. SxS London Sidelock

When I was younger, I thought owning an old pickup truck, a couple of bird dogs, and a few fantastic shotguns would make me happy.

The sidelock 16 gauge Holland & Holland No. 2 SxS you see here is the kind of gun I had in mind.

The No. 2 was Holland & Holland’s second-quality shotgun (these Royals were first-quality). According to an H&H catalog from 1910, the No. 2 was “… intended to meet the requirements of those sportsmen who wanted a sound, well made, and good shooting weapon at a moderate price.” It cost about two-thirds of what Holland & Holland charged for a Royal.

Incredible Holland & Holland No. 2 16 ga. SxS London Sidelock
Incredible Holland & Holland No. 2 16 ga. SxS London Sidelock

Everything about this Holland & Holland No. 2 looks right, from the proportions of the action and locks and the metal-to-metal fit to the color-case hardening and the veins of figure in the gorgeous French walnut stock. None of these features steals the show, either. Instead, each complements the other, creating an elegant gun that can be admired in many ways.

Even though the gun is called a No. 2, nothing about it looks second-tier. It features a hidden third bite and even Holland’s hand-detachable locks, a feature the company patented in 1908. The rounded front of the action (the bar) is a nice touch, too, even if filing up the action that way helped keep the cost of the gun down.

Rounded bar or the action on the Holland & Holland No. 2 16 ga. SxS London Sidelock

According to the seller, this gun was finished in 1916. Holland introduced their “New Model 16-Bore Hammerless Ejector Gun” a few years earlier and called it a “… handy, well-balanced weapon weighing 6 lbs. (but handles considerably lighter)…” Along with a Special System of Boring, it featured a Special Treble Grip action and hand-detachable locks. I’m certain the gun you see here is one of them (Second Quality Hammerless Ejectors …… 50 Guineas).

John Wilkes 28g boxlock SxS with exquisite engraving and features and also a long length of pull: Boxlocks – Built between the wars (1928) this little 28g. has many hard-to-find features as well as wonderful wood and engraving. The game scene engraving, the high grade wood, and the long length of pull make this petite flower a rare find. Wilkes was a highly respected London gun maker. Serial Number: 10181 Ejectors: Yes Barrels: 26″ Barrel Type: Steel Action: Boxlock Ejector Gauge: 28 gauge Stock Comb: 1 7/16″ Stock Heel: 2 3/16″ Stock Cast: 1/8″ LOP: 15″ Weight: 5 lbs 14 ozs Choke Left: .018 full in 28g Choke Right: .013″ Mod Proof:Nitro: 2 3/4″ Minimum Wall Thickness Left: .032″ Minimum Wall Thickness Right: .033.  It is said in the UK that of all the double guns built there before WWII that 90% were 12g. guns. The next most common gauge among the remaining 10% were 20g. guns, the next were 16g. guns, and the next .410 doubles. Interesting that 28g. were the smallest and rarest gauge of guns built in the UK during this period. This explains why they are so hard for us to find and why it is common when we are searching for them that when asking a dealer they often say “Dont you know that 28g. guns made in the UK are rare as rocking horse shit?” Price: $12,600*

Trio of David McKay Brown 16g Side by Side Game Guns

Trio of David McKay Brown 16g Side by Side Game Guns: Consecutively numbered, true trio of 16g round action trigger plate assisted-opening side-by-side game guns by Scottish maker, David McKay Brown.  Each gun is built on the classic Scottish trigger plate action with its rounded action bar. Each gun features two triggers, automatic ejectors, auto-safeties, color case hardening and wonderfully executed small English scroll by renowned engraver Dave Tallett.  Each gun features the Maker’s name inlaid in gold on the bottom the actions.  Finally, each gun is appropriately numbered “1, 2, or 3” in gold and the word “SAFE” is also inlaid in gold.  All three guns feature 28” chopper lump barrels with 2 ¾” chambers and 2002 London proof marks.  The three guns were finished in 2003.  All three sets of barrels are bored and choked exactly the same, right at .015″ and left at .020″, with smooth concave game ribs. The guns are stocked in a lovely set of well-matched stock blanks with straight hand grips and splinter forend. There is a 15″ LOP over checkered butts, drop is 13/8” (at comb), 17/16” (at face), 2” (at heel) and the guns are cast off 1/8″. The guns each weigh a lively 6 lbs. 2 oz. and are complete in the Maker’s three-gun motor case. The guns show some signs of use, but are overall in excellent condition, tight on face, and the barrels and stocks free from any dents, bulges or cracks. Each gun is a superb example of the classic Scottish round action game gun. According to company records, this is the only trio of 16g side-by-side game guns ever made by David McKay Brown. CONNECTICUT SHOTGUN CUSTOM RBL- 12 GAUGE
CONNECTICUT SHOTGUN CUSTOM RBL- 12 GAUGE

CONNECTICUT SHOTGUN CUSTOM RBL – 12 GAUGE: I have for sale a very special Connecticut Shotgun RBL 12 Gauge. I had this RBL custom made to my specifications. I traveled to the Connecticut Shotgun facility and picked out the wood blank for the stock and discussed just what I wanted in the gun. The stock blank was $1K. I wanted it light for a 12 so it is built on a 16-gauge frame and weighs 6Lb. 9 ounces on my digital scale. It has double triggers, and comes with six choke tubes ic through full in a nice leather case. I had them put a very classy metal heel and toe plate on the butt. The barrels are 28”. The LOP is 14 ¼”, DAC 1 ¼” and DAH is 2 ¼”. Perfect modern dimensions. Screws are perfect and have never been turned. I have used it mostly for Sporting Clays, but with the weight it is also suited for Pheasant, Grouse, Woodcock and Quail hunting. There are a few very minor safe marks in the stock and minimal wear to the ends of the barrels from going in and out of a soft gun case. The case colors are 100% and beautiful. The engraving is one of my favorites. I am selling it as I just do not shoot it much anymore and it should be appreciated and used by someone who would. This RBL is one of a kind and I do not think you can even get a custom RBL today. Price: $5,695*

Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25″ bbls:

Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25″ bbls: You are looking at a rare and an unusual Purdey gun. Unlike this gun, most if not all “funeral” or “black” Purdey guns were sent out with the expectation that they will return to London to be finished per buyer’s taste. This gun was ordered in blued steel and gold lettering with minimal engraving. Copy of the Purdey dimension book entry for the gun and the actioner’s work order from Peter Nelson can be found in the pictures. Orginally a 2 1/2″ gun, the chambers were lengthened to 2 3/4″ (3 1/4 tons) and the gun re-proofed in London in 1986. Built on the Beesly action, this high condition self-opener ejector game gun sports 25″ barrels and an automatic safety. The gun was manufactured in 1964 and comes in its original Purdey lightweight leather motor case. Finished by Alan Dudley, stocked by Anthony Rule, barrels by Jack Aldous, and actioned by Peter Nelson. Price: $27,000*

Lust. My obsession for a 20g Beretta Onyx like this …

See: Beretta Model 686 Onyx 20 GA 28” Over/Under Dbl Barrel Shotgun, MFD 1992

Here’s your chance to get one of the best upland shotguns Beretta has made. The 686 Onyx was the first shotgun I lusted after, and I still think it’s a fantastic-looking OU. This one looks like it has a fancy, upgraded walnut stock, so it’s even more impressive.

Beretta introduced the 686 Onyx around ’88 and built them until around ’99. The gun quickly gained a reputation for being a rugged, reliable OU that handled well and was easy to maintain and repair. All that’s still true today.

With original 3″ chambers and choke tubes, the one you see here can handle any kind of upland hunting you do. And because the gun doesn’t cost a fortune, you don’t have to worry about it while you’re doing it.

Will this 20g Greifelt OU falls through the cracks and go cheap?

Greifelt & Co. 20 Gauge 26” Over/Under Boxlock Dble Barrel Shotgun 1925

Greifelt & Co. 20 Gauge 26” Over/Under Boxlock Dble Barrel Shotgun 1925

A friend of mine used to be obsessed with Gunbroker.com. He spent hours on the site every week, searching listings, zooming in on pictures, reading and re-reading descriptions.

When he saw something he liked, he would leave a reasonable bid and move on. Most of his bids don’t work out. But sometimes, a nice shotgun or rifle would fall through the cracks, and my friend would get a deal. Then he would send me a pic of the gun, tell me what he paid for it, and make me jealous.

The kind of shotgun my friend would have bid on: 20g Greifelt OU soon. With double triggers, ejectors, 2 3/4″ chambers, and a 14 3/4” LOP, he would have been thrilled to have won it.

Greifelt & Co used to be one of Germany’s top gunmakers. The company was active from 1885 to WWII. In the 1920s and 1930s, they exported shotguns and rifles to gunshops in America like Von Lengerke & Detmold and Abercrombie & Fitch.

The OUs they sent over here were some of the first modern over-under shotguns sold in the US. Those Greifelts cost much more than most Parkers, Foxes, and L.C. Smiths. But they were still cheaper than British over unders by Boss or Woodward.

5 resons the Remington-era Parkers may be the best Parkers of all …

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun
Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

Certain types of Parker shotguns are easy to find. Hammerless models from about 1900 — 1925, tired, worn out, messed with, and way beyond their prime.

But Parkers like the one you see here are different. Not only is this one in little used, all-original condition, it’s also one of the youngest Parkers you’ll find. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the no-reserve listing ends this Sunday, 10/1, @ 8:26 PM.

Made around 1941 or so, it’s was built after Remington acquired the company and one of the last 100-200 Parkers made.

Here are 5 reasons why many Parker fans think these later, Remington guns are some of the best Parkers ever built.

1. Parker built shotguns for 75 years. They learned a lot about how to improve their designs in that time. The gun you see here has all those improvements.

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun
Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

2. This gun was made with 2 3/4″ chambers, so its original forcing cones are intact (unlike older guns that have been opened up to 2 3/4″).

3. It features the same chrome-moly steel barrels that Remington used in its shotguns Many people prefer Remington chrome-moly steel to older style steel used in Meriden-era Parker shotguns.

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

4. Remington was known for using high-grade wood on field-grade guns. Take a look at the stock on this VHE to see what that means.

5. Unlike the really old Parkers, the late one like this have the kind of stock dimensions modern shooters can use.
