Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:
Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore: An excellent little Webley & Scott Model 728, a 28 bore double box lock ejector with 25″ barrels choked 3/4 (improved modified) in the left tube and 1/4 (improved cylinder) in the right tube. There is extensive floral scroll engraving covering the action, bottom plate, trigger guard, toplever, and forearm hardware and “WEBLEY & SCOTT” on each side of the action. There is even a flourish of floral scroll engraving on the breach end of the rib. The right tube is engraved atop the breech end “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.” and the left tube is similarly engraved “SERVICE ARMAMENT CO, RIDGEFIELD, N.J., U.S.A.” Mounted in a very nicely figured walnut stock with multi-point checkered forearm and English straight hand butt stock with teardrop flats, a vacant gold (I think) oval escutcheon at the toe and checkered butt. There are a few very small spots of finish loss and handling marks to the forearm. This dandy is ready to go in it’s original canvas covered takedown hard case complete with original trade label and all the original accessories including a pair of snap caps, an oil bottle, a two piece cleaning rod stored under the barrels, a wire brush, a patch swab, a mop, and a box of cleaning patches. Remarkable, also included is the original hang tag. This particular 728 appears to me to be a little better than usual with highly figured wood and a gold oval escutcheon near the toe. The butt is original too and hardly ever grounded as can be seen in the photos; so often these have been modified with a pad. The Model 728 is a fantastic little English hand made side-by-side gun, made before the days of mass produced CNC machined guns. This gun is slightly used – it bagged several quail and a pheasant in its one and only outing last season – but is in excellent although not quite perfect condition. The pictures tell the story. I think these guns are a great value and a good investment. I’ve seen them appreciate considerably on these pages even in just the last year. They aren’t bespoke guns but they do exhibit fine English craftsmanship. This 728 is a gun you can be proud of in any company but at a fraction of the cost of a bespoke gun. Price: $7,500*

Super Rare Luigi Franchi Condor SxS 20ga Matched Pair

Super Rare Luigi Franchi Condor SxS 20ga Matched Pair: It is very scarce to find a Luigi Franchi Condor model in 20ga inside the United States little alone a Matched Pair. This fine pair was constructed in 1950 for E. Casciano of Rome which was one of the largest provider of high grade guns in Italy at the time. This pair is identical in every way with the exception of the choking which I feel these were built for small gauge live pigeon competitions or for driven birds I am not 100% sure on either however a very nice pair indeed. This pair has the traditional square body actions which is uncommon for this model as well as the Full Coverage Best Quality Engraving as these were definitely special ordered and remain in excellent original condition cased in their original case which included”s two original keys . Seven pin locks with disc set strikers numbered in gold 1 & 2 on top levers and barrels & forends, ribs are concaved non matted tapered both with single bead front sights. Barrels are constructed of Vickers-Steel-Supercromato and are still remain as proofed in 1950. Price: $22,500*

UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side
UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side

UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side: Hello, I have for sale a musuem quality fox 20 gauge A-grade that I acquired several years ago.  I have the factory order card for this gun and it is in the same condition as it left the factory.  This gun is unfired and is as MINT an example as you will find.  It would be impossible to upgrade this gun in any way.  All of the factory finishes are 100%.  This gun has been so well cared for that there is no rust, pitting, cracks, wear….nothing.  The factory wood finish is superb as is the checkering and the engraving/case colors are flawless and sharp.  This gun has the early snap-on forend and second generation “gough” style engraving.  Specs are as follows.  28″ barrels, double triggers, extractors, choked cyl/mod (as per factory card), 2.5″ chambers, mirror bores and 100% bluing throughout.  This gun has drops of about 1 9/16 and 2 7/8 and the LOP is the factory standard 14 1/8″ to 14 1/4″.  This gun has the factory buttplate and screws as well…all still mint.  Please, no low-ball offers.  Serious inquiries only.  I can provide additional pictures as needed for serious buyers. PS:  this is only the second year for 20 gauge foxes and a very early example with the gough engraving…quite a rare find here. Price: $8,750*

Fine and lightweight Francotte Model 20E 20ga Game Gun - with full provenance from G&H
Fine and lightweight Francotte Model 20E 20ga Game Gun – with full provenance from G&H

Fine and lightweight Francotte Model 20E 20ga Game Gun – with full provenance from G&H: Beautiful little lightweight side plated boxlock 20ga.  Made with 26″ fluid steel barrels, checkered splinter forend with Deeley push button release, double triggers, auto ejectors, auto safety.  The side plates boxlock action is beautifully scroll engraved with Greener Crossbolt and barrels with perfectly fitted sideclips.  The pistol grip buttstock has fine figure and fiddleback and terminates with its original lined horn buttplate.  Housed in a beautiful original A&F case which is a toe under leather case. I’ve long felt that these Francotte guns are an exceptional value in today’s market – for the quality, it’s impossible to find a better hand built more durable gun.  And this one in 20ga! Overall the gun remains in pleasing original condition with more than 90% original barrel blue. Fabbri Best Grade "Funeral" Sidelock 12 ga. O/U Shotgun
Fabbri Best Grade “Funeral” Sidelock 12 ga. O/U Shotgun

Fabbri Best Grade “Funeral” Sidelock 12 ga. O/U Shotgun: Fabbri Best Grade “Funeral” Gold Line Sidelock 12 gauge O/U shotgun.  Masterfully hand-made in 1972 by Armi Fabbri this “pigeon” configured O/U comes with two original 30” sets of Bohler Super Blitz steel barrels. Both sets are identical in that they are fitted with “flat” vent ribs that taper from 7/16” to 5/16” and have brass front and mid beads. The set marked “I” is choked .020” Modified and .035” Full.  Set “II” is choked .035” Full and .043” XXFull. The sidelock receiver was engraved by Italian master engraver Ferruccio Iora in the minimalistic “Funeral” style which features very fine, and very difficult to execute gold wire on a “black” finished frame.  In the case of this gun “less is more” as you will surely agree, this is a splendid looking Fabbri. The stock and forearm were fashioned from a beautiful piece of walnut.  The forearm is fitted with an Anson style push button release.  The buttstock has a right-hand palm swell.  As the presents it has a 14 ¾” LOP over several spacers and a recoil pad.  The DAC is 1 3/8” and the DAH is 1 3/8” with about ¼” right hand cast.  Although the dimensions are very shootable, you will agree that a new stock is in order.  Tulio Fabbri estimates $10k to restock the gun by the factory.  Whereas it could be professionally restocked here in the states for considerably less money! Of course, this is a Fabbri which indicates it is one of the very best guns in the world from both a materials standpoint and from a fit and finish perspective! The gun weighs 7 lbs. 11 oz., and balances beautifully.  Overall condition is 98%+. In all regards this is one of the finest guns in the world and this very gun would be approximately $200k to replace.  Cased in maker’s leather luggage case. SN:  E463 Price: $75,000*

To me, the A-grade has always been the sweet spot of A.H. Fox shotguns. Sterlingworths are a bit plain. The second-style engraving that sets it apart, plus a round-knob, half-pistol grip stock make it special.

A.H. Fox A Grade Pre-Savage 28″ Full/Mod 16 GA SXS Double Shotgun, 1921

“This FOX grade is a gun that the discriminating sportsman will appreciate as to price and workmanship. It is not a cheap gun, but a more than good gun at a reasonable figure, and can be built to your own specifications without extra charge. The material and fittings are of superior FOX class.” -from an A.H. Fox catalog

The barrel flat is marked “A”, “301339” and with a Fox proof. Each side of the receiver is marked “ANSLEY H. FOX” in banner and the receiver and trigger plate have Grade A scroll engraving. The water table is marked “301339” and “A” on the right. The bottom tang is marked “301339” as is the top of the forend iron.

Barrel Length: 28”, Choke: Left: Full, Right: Modified, Both Fixed

Sights / Optics: There is a silver-colored bead mounted to the front of the rib. The top of the rib is finely serrated to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with splinter forend, round-bottom pistol grip, straight comb and ventilated orange rubber Jostham recoil pad. The stocks have some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The forend has a repaired chip-loss on the top edge on the left-rear with a filled loss below this. There are a few tiny losses around the front edges of the wrist. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures approximately 14 1/4″ and 13 3/8″ from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the recoil pad, 13 3/8″ and 12 1/2″ to the back of the wood. The drop at comb is approximately 1 3/8″, drop at heel 2 1/2″. The pad is shows wear and discoloration, but is still fairly supple. The stocks rate in about Very Good condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color

Bore Condition: The bores are mostly bright. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some stubborn fouling.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. The barrels’ finish is generally strong with a few light nicks and scuffs, most at the breech-end. The receiver’s case color has muting toward the bottom-front with stronger color toward the top-rear. The guard has light handling wear and some scattered minor surface oxidation. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrels lock up to the receiver with no play. The safety engages automatically when the action is opened. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Ansley Fox was one of the earliest American innovators with internal hammer double guns. In 1894, at the age of 19, he was issued a patent on a system of cocking the internal hammers of a break-action gun using leverage from the barrels with his design actually containing nineteen patentable features, according to the U.S. Patent office. Fox would continue on, making it his life’s work to produce “The finest gun in the world” (as well as the finest car in the world and a few other manufacturing ventures). He even gained the praise of Theodore Roosevelt who wrote to Mr. Fox in a letter “The double-barreled shotgun has come, and I really think it is the most beautiful gun I have ever seen. I am exceedingly proud of it. I am almost ashamed to take it to Africa and expose it to the rough usage it will receive. But now that I have it, I could not possibly make up my mind to leave it behind. I am extremely proud that I am to have such a beautiful bit of American workmanship with me”.

The A.H. Fox Gun Co. would continue producing shotguns of various grades and chambered for various gauges through the late 1920s, when they fell victim to the Great Depression and were acquired by Savage Arms. This example is a 16 gauge A Grade, produced in 1921, the heyday of A.H. Fox, during the Roaring ’20s when post-war America was booming and Fox guns were selling as well as ever. Today, A.H. Fox shotguns are quite collectible. As Fox’s reputation was built on quality, their success didn’t necessarily mean that a huge number of guns were made. For the dedicated Fox collector, this A Grade would make a great addition to a collection. Better still, with its good bores and tight lockup, this shotgun can still serve, more than 100 years later, to take down flesh or clay birds in style. Please see our photos and good luck!

A rare 16g Heym OU, Grade 9D, at auction, no reserve …

Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28" Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33
Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28″ Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33

High quality doesn’t always equal high price. Case in point: I’ve always been amazed by how well-made pre-World War II German OUs are and how low their prices remain.

The 16g F.W. Heym Grade 9D you see here is a great example

It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the online auction listing ends Sunday, 10/2/2022 @ 8:25 PM EST.

Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28" Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33
Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28″ Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33

F.W. Heym was founded in Suhl, Germany, in July 1865. The company is still around today. They built this shotgun in the 1920s. It features a Merkel-style triggerplate action, sideplates, ejectors, and 28″ barrels with a full-length vent rib. It also has original 2 3/4″ chambers.

Back in the ’20s, this shotgun was one of the highest-grade F.W. Heyms imported into the US. It was expensive and costs about as much as Paker BHE SxS.

I’ve shot fancy British OUs that cost 10x-12x more than guns like this Heym. Are those Purdeys and Woodwards 10x-12x better? I didn’t think so.

Choke: The top barrel has a Full choke and the bottom barrel has a Improved Modified Choke. Both chokes are fixed.

Action Type: Over/Under Hammerless Top-Break Shotgun with a Barrel Selector and Ejectors

Markings: The receiver is covered in floral scroll engravings and on the bottom is marked “FR. WILH. HEYM, SUHL / GERMANY”. The top of the receiver, obscured by the barrel when it is in the down position, is marked with two Weimar-era proof marks (a German Eagle and a crowned “U” which was a definitive proof) above Germany on the right side and features the serial number on the right “5805AH”. The belly features a medallion marked “G.P.” The upper left portion of the top barrel, concealed by the side panel, is marked “ROECHLING”, “GTC” inside an oval, “ELEKTROSTAHL”, and has faded German proof marks concealed by a wood side panel (an eagle next to “NITRO” which was a nitro proof, two faded eagles, a corwned “U” definitive proof, “16” inside an oval which was the gauge designation and some marks that are no longer legible). The bottom barrel, visible when the forend is removed, is marked “ROECHLING”, “GTC” inside an oval and “ELEKTROSTAHL”. The bottom of the lower barrel is serial matched. The left rear portion of the upper barrel, which is visible when the gun is fully assembled,  is marked “NEW-YORK”, “GRADE No 9 D” and Nitro next to a faded mark.  The right rear portion of the upper barrel, which is visible when the gun is fully assembled, is marked “SLOANS SPORTING GOODS Co INC”. The forend iron is serial matched.

Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a red bead and there is a red colored bead about half way down the rib.

Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The stock is 4 piece wood featuring a checkered detachable forend, two smooth wood side panels, a checkered semi-pistol grip with a engraved metal cap, a fluted straight comb, a medallion on the belly and a textured black synthetic butt-plate. The stock has some light handling marks, nicks and scuffs. Notably, there is a tiny crack at the tip of the top tang. The LOP is 14.5” from the trigger to the rear of the butt-plate. The drops are approximately 1.75” and 2.5” inches from the comb and heel respectively. The butt-plate has some light handling marks. Overall, the stock is in Very Good-Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue and Case Color

Bore Condition: The bores are mostly bright with some light erosion concentrated around the muzzles.

Overall Condition: The shotgun retains about 65% of its metal finish. There are some light-moderate handling marks, nicks and scuffs. Notably, the case-colored receiver’s finish has largely worn off, with some surviving finish on the top tang, concealed by the barrel and on the sides. The barrels have a patch of moderate finish loss on the forward left side, light wear around the leading edges and some light wear around the muzzles. Some of the markings have faded but most remain clear. The screwheads are lightly tooled and remain serviceable. Overall, the shotgun is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrels lock with no play on the frame. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box Paperwork and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: Friedrich Wilhelm Heym was a Suhl based industrialist who founded his namesake company in mid 1865. The company is most famous for the shotguns and rifles it has produced. The company primarily exported its goods to the Russian Empire before shifting its focus to the United States around the time WWI broke out (Germany and Russia went to war in 1914). Ironically, Germany would end up fighting the United States as well in 1917. Despite this, when WWI ended the company continued to export arms to the U.S., primarily exporting shotguns and drillings. The company survived WWII and remains in operation today.

This particular specimen is an over/under shotgun, designated the Grade No. 9D, which was made during the Weimar-era based on the proof marks. The gun has some handling wear but it retains its beautiful engravings and is still mechanically sound. The gun should make a wonderful addition to any collection. Good luck on your bid!

Two great upland guns, maybe great deals: a Merkel OU & a Francotte SxS …

Two lightweight 12gs: A Merkel 200E from the '30s and a Francotte Featherweight.
Two lightweight 12s: A Merkel 200E from 1930 and a Francotte Featherweight from 1928

“Another bargain!!!” Those are the first two words of this article I wrote for Shooting Sportsman magazine: Boxlock Bargains: Why lightweight 12s are the kings of bird guns.

The 12 gauge you see here are perfect examples of what I was writing about. The Merkel OU weighs 6 lb., 5.2 oz., the Francotte side-by-side 6 lb., 1 oz. Both have ejectors, straight grips, double triggers, and old school styling; and their barrels have original 2 3/4″ chambers, excellent bore measurements, and plenty of wall thickness.

Two lightweight 12gs: A Merkel 200E from 1930 and a Francotte Featherweight from 1928
Two lightweight 12s: A Merkel 200E from 1930 and a Francotte Featherweight from 1928

Both are on Gunbroker.com now. There’s no reserve on either one, so they offer you the chance to get a great bird gun — and a very high-quality shotgun — for little money.

As I wrote in my article for Shooting Sportsman, lightweight 12s have a number of advantages:

  • There’s a range of ammo available for them, so you can modify your load to hunt anything from quail and woodcock to pheasant. Plus, when a vintage 12 gauge has original 2 3/4″ chambers it should be OK shooting any easy-to-find, major brand, low-brass12g game loads.
  • They have adult-sized proportions, and they’re better balanced. Unlike smallbores, lightweight twelves don’t feel dainty or whippy, and their barrels aren’t swallowed up in your hands. All this makes them easier to control and shoot.
  • People ignore them, favoring 20gs and 28gs instead (even though 12s are ballistically superior). This keeps demand — and prices — for lightweight twelve gauges foolishly low.

Merkel Brothers Lightweight 200E 27.5″ IC/C 12 GA, 1930. 6lbs, 5.2 oz: Merkel’s one of Europe’s most famous gunmakers, and one of the few old-school German gunmakers around today. Most collectors agree that the shotguns they made before World War Two — like this OU — are their highest quality and finest overall.

This is a model 200 with ejectors, so a 200E. It was made for the European market, and the barrels measure 70cm (27.5″), a common length for Continental shotguns. The barrels feature a full-length solid rib, and there are two white beads ahead of the toplever and on either side of the top rib. Technically, it’s not a boxlock. Instead, it’s built on a standard Merkel-style triggerplate action. But because it lacks sideplates, it has a similar look.

Auguste Francotte Featherweight Boxlock 12 GA 28″ IM/M Double Barrel. 1928. 6lbs, 1 oz: Another pre-war double from a famous European maker. This SxS is built on of the finest designs of all time — the Anson & Deeley boxlock action — and features ejectors. The action retails a ton of color-case hardening and has Woodward-style arcade fences, fine, hand-cut scroll engraving, and a Purdey-style hidden third bite. The gun has fantastic proportions and real sexy look to it.

Fantastic and near mint Ithaca NID Field Grade 10ga – Fabulous all original gun with bold vivid original case color!: Easily the very best 10ga NID Model Field Grade Gun I have seen, this one made before the era of the 10ga Magnums in the 500k SN range.  This gun made with 32″ fluid steel barrels, checkered splinter forend, double triggers, extractors and safety.  The case hardened frame is lightly border engraved.  Capped pistol grip buttstock is point pattern checkered through the wrist and terminates with the original lined lined hard rubber buttplate. Overall, the gun remains in near mint original condition.  Barrels retain nearly all of their original blue with only a very minor rub or two.  Receiver retains virtually all of its bold original case color as seen in the photos.  Stocks are sound and retain virutally all of their original finish with only very minor handling marks and upon very close inspection do show some repair work at wrist which is very near invisible. Bores are brilliant and shiny and mechanics are crisp.  This is a very near mint gun which has been scarcely fired.  Breech face shows almost no shell ring evidence. Price: $3,295
