Fox A Grade 16 Gauge – RARE WELL-FIGURED ENGLISH STOCK, Vintage Firearms, Inc: General Specs: Year 1937, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 4oz, Chokes IC/IM Factory, LOP 14 1/8″, DAH 2 3/16″, DAC 1 3/8″
Serial Number: 303595. Ansley H. Fox created a timeless, high quality, simply designed box lock at his A.H. Fox Gun Co. in Philadelphia, PA.  Most vintage side x side lovers are well-aware the 20ga. and 16ga. Fox guns are the most dynamic, lightweight, best handling American double guns ever created.  Best of all, the 16ga. guns were all built on the diminutive 20ga. frame.  This Fox A Grade, sn303595 made in 1937, is one of only 2500 Fox A Grade 16ga. guns ever made, with about 2200 remaining in existence due to loss and destruction, so there are few offered for sale.  Only 10% or so were ever made with the English style stock, or maybe a few hundred in existence.  IF YOU ARE ONE WHO LOVES STRAIGHT STOCKED UPLAND GUNS…THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO OWN THE PERFECT LITTLE FOX 16GA.!  Straight gripped guns almost never surface for sale.  In this Fox we have a solid gun with excellent screws, factory 26” number 3 weight barrels factory choked IC/IM with mirror bores, factory bore diameter, 99% rich rust blue, double ivory beads, and lots of barrel wall thickness (see tables below for specs).  The ribs are tight, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever right of center…like a new gun.  Take a good look at the photos and you will see a truly gorgeous Fox A Grade that has everything going for it.  She is one of those guns that just looks “right”.  The wood figure and finish is stunning, the wood-to-metal fit is superb, the action retains 70% factory case color and the engraving is sharp and clear, …JUST A CLASSY LOOKING FOX!  Even the genuine Silvers pad has that aged look and is fit to perfection.  Search long and hard and you will not find another Fox A Grade 16 with all these great features.  What a great upland gun choked perfect for nearly any bird on the North American continent.  Weighing just 6 1/4lbs. you can carry this gun all day over hill and dale without getting “long arms” by the end of the day.  This is a gun with enough wear on it that you will not feel bad taking it afield and shooting your vintage gun at clay targets.  This is the epitome of an investment quality Fox with desirable features, and affordability.  Price: $5,950

Purdey sidelock Over-Under 20 gauge, 30″ Bbls, 2003 and mint, Teage Choke Tubes, Leather Case w/canvas cover

Purdey sidelock Over-Under 20 gauge, 30″ Bbls, 2003 and mint, Teage Choke Tubes, Leather Case w/canvas cover: I am original buyer and owner of this Purdey sidelock 20 Gauge, Over and Under, with 30″ Barrels, Teague Chokes.  Specs were to make the ideal driven pheasant shotgun, as well as for partridge and other small bird game.  It’s a marvelous shotgun and here is the whole story on the shotgun which was ordered in 2001 and delivered in Declember 2003.  Description per the mini Purdey book included with the gun as follows: 20 Bore, Over & Under Square Bar, Trigger Single, Beaded Edge, Automatic safety, weight 6lb 8 oz, Barrels 30″, Chamber 2 and 3/4″, Rib solid matted, Chokes Teague x 6 tubes, Proof 1200 BAR, Weight of Barrels 2 lb 12 oz, Stock Pistol Grip with Metal Cap, Chequered Butt, Measurements 1 3/8 x 1 7/8, Length 15 3/8 Mid, Cast off 3/8″ Heel, Forend Slim Tapering, No oval, Case Light Tan + Canvas Outer.  Engraving Fine Rose & Scroll.  Gold Purdey name on Locks and Forend Iron; Colour Hardened Finish.  Total shells fired less than 3 boxes; used once in the field.  Gun is in excellent plus condition per photos posted here; no bad surprises!  All the little parts that Purdey delivers with shotgun are here:  Purdey engraved snapcaps, Purdey cleaning rod, Purdey mini leather holder with chamber brushes, a mini Purdey book with all specs of gun.  There is also a thumb drive with photos of the making of this shotgun in the Purdey factory in England.  Stock was hand selected in the Purdey wood room at Audley House.  Gold Purdey name on Locks each side, and on Forend iron add a touch of distinction.  The 30 inch barrels with the Teague chokes allow you many possible uses of just one gun, from open chokes for Partridge to full chokes for driven pheasant; you get to pick which of the 6 chokes you want.  I thought the 20 gauge over-under was the best option for various game events, and that would include skeet and even sporting clays.  Note in the leather case–and case was made specifically for this gun–the Teague chokes come with one small wrench which is eacy and fast to change choke tubes; each of the tubes is fitted into the case.  Also note that the case holds small silver colored bottle for oil, and small tan leather holder for barrel brushes, and the rod with Pudey naming is tucked neatly into the case, along with Purdey engraved snap caps.  The good news is that all the mini parts are here and included.   It’s a marvelous gun looking for a new home!  (PS:  Using 2017 Purdey price list, this shotgun prices out at $165,117 plus Duty $4170 Excise Tax $17,644 and shipping w/insurance $3,000. ) Price: $125,000

Here’s your chance to buy one of the rarest and most beautiful side-by-side shotguns ever made.John Dickson , Edinburgh .16 bore round action ejector with damascus barrels . Made 1905 for sale:

John Dickson & Son has been building Round Action shotguns since the 1880s. Since then, they’ve made approximately 2,000 of these SxSs. Of these, I believe fewer than a dozen of these have been sixteen gauges.

John Dickson , Edinburgh .16 bore round action ejector with damascus barrels . Made 1905 for sale:

Besides being a rare gauge, the one you see here is special for couple other reasons, to: First, the engraving. It’s an unusual pattern, probably executed by Harry Kell. Second, the damascus barrels. According to the seller, this gun was made in 1905. That’s late for damascus barrels, so whoever ordered this gun specified that he want them instead of fluid-steel.

16g Parker CHE SxS Shotgun
16g Parker CHE SxS Shotgun

I usually don’t go for restored or refinished guns. But I have to say, I could be talked into this 16g Parker CHE. Not only is it rare, it’s my favorite gauge, it’s stock has excellent dimensions and whoever refinished it didn’t a good job (according to the seller, the work was done by Turnbull).

According to the Parker Collectors website, Parker made just 1,673 CH-grade shotguns. These guns came with either damascus-steel bbls (regular or Bernard) or fluid Acme-steel barrels. According to the seller, Parker made just fifty-six CHE 16ga 28″ Acme Steel guns. BTW: CHE = C-grade, Hammerless, with Ejectors).

Fine original Lefever GE 16ga with 28″ Dam bbls

What are the chances? In less than a week, two rare — and great looking — Lefevers have popped up on Gunbroker.

Last week I posted this 16g DM Lefever shotgun. Today, I’m posting that gun’s cousin, this 16g GE from the Lefever Arms Co. It’s on Gunbroker.com with No Reserve listing and it ends on 4/1/2019 @ 1:57 PM.

Fine original Lefever GE 16ga with 28" Dam bbls
Fine original Lefever GE 16ga with 28″ Dam bbls

Daniel Myron Lefever was an American inventor and gunmaker. In his lifetime, he patented a number of gun designs, including the one you see here, which was built by the Lefever Arms Company from 1883 until 1916.

Fine original Lefever GE 16ga with 28″ Dam bbls

I love this gun for several reasons: First, there’s the design. Not only is it great looking (maybe the best looking of all American doubles), it’s also clever as hell. Not only does it have an adjustable action (so it’s easy to fix when it goes off the face), it also has an adjustable forend (so if it comes loose, it’s easy to tighten). Nest, this appears to be in excellent original condition. Considering this gun is 100+ years old, that’s special. Finally, there’s its gauge and barrel length. Sixteen-gauges with 28″ barrels from the Lefever Arms Co. are not that common.

Fine original Lefever GE 16ga with 28″ Dam bbls

Fine original Lefever GE 16ga with 28″ Dam bbls: Fine original Lefever GE 16ga. 28″ Damascus barrels with bold pattern. Made with double triggers, splinter forend, capped pistol grip buttstock, and auto-safety. Weighing in at 6lbs 10oz. the gun retains a solid 40% original case color, 90%++ original Damascus pattern, 40% original trigger guard blue and most of the original stock finishes. The wood is nicely figured and measures 1-11/16″ DAC, 2-15/16 DAH, and 14-3/8″ LOP over the original Lefever Arms. Co monogrammed buttplate. Barrels, with original 2-1/2″ chambers measure .674(right) with .018 choke, and .667 (left) with .020 choke and minimum wall thickness is .027(right) and .032(left) making this a great shooting gun! The gun is priced at $2295 plus shipping to your FFL. This gun will make a fine shooting small bore Lefever that will also be comfortable in a collection of American doubles. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions via PM on this site or at (704) 280-2382. Thanks for looking!

Incredible gun alert: 16g Lefever BE SxS …

Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun
Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun

Take a good, long look at this 16g BE-grade Lefever. Chances are good you’ll never see another one again.

Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun
Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun

Over its short history (XXXX-XXXX) the Lefever Arms Company made far fewer guns than the other major American SxS makers — Parker, Fox, L.C. Smith, and Ithaca. And as was the case with most gunmakers, most of the SxSs Lefever built were in their lower grades: I, DS, H, G, F. Very few of the company’s top-tier guns – the One Thousand Dollar Grade, the Optimus, the AA, A, & Bs – were made and most of these were 12 gauges.

Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun
Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun

So any B-grade Lefever is a scarce gun (a BE is a B-grade with Ejectors), and a 16 gauge BE is, well, super ‘friggin rare. In 20 years of following Lefevers, this is the first one I’ve seen on the open market.

BTW: If you own an old Lefever and would like to know more about it or sell it, please let me know. I would be happy to help out. Gregg@DogsandDoubles.com

Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun
Fantastic and Extremely Rare Original Lefever BE Grade 16ga SxS Shotgun

The gun weighs 5lbs 14oz and was made on the Lefever “XX” frame size as marked on the watertable. The gun has original 2-1/2″ original chambers, bright shiny bores.  The barrels measure .670 in both tubes (perfect for a 16ga Lefever) and have .020 choke (mod) in the right barrel and .028 (full) in the left barrel. Grouse hunters: Here’s your dream Parker SxS…

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

Ruffed grouse hunting isn’t for sissies. There are no horse-drawn carriages to ride in or wide-open fields to stroll through, and no one pushes birds your way as you block a shelterbelt.

If you want to chase these ruffed grouse, you need to get in the woods and get dirty. You’re going to get scratched up and bruised, and you’re going to carry your gun a lot.

That’s why lightweight doubles are popular with experienced grouse guys.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

The Parker VH you see here is 16 gauge built on a 0 frame (frame = action, Parker actions ran from 000-frames, used on .410s and 28 gauges, to 7-frames, used on 10 and 8 gauges). It weighs just 5lbs, 13oz — lighter than a lot of 20-gauges – and about a pound less than your typical 16-gauge Parker.

Good gun alert: 16g Parker DHE SxS, $4250 …

Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun
Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun

“Fair price” and “Parker shotgun” aren’t words see near each other very often — especially when a Parker is a sixteen-gauge DHE. But from what I can see, that’s just how I would describe the SxS you see here.

Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun
Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun

This 16 gauge Parker DHE looks like it’s in decent shape. If that’s the case, $4250 is a very fair price for it.

The DHE was Parker’s entry-level, “custom gun” (meaning it had to be custom ordered from the factory) and the company considered it “The Best Gun Value of Which We Know.”

Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun
Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun

Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun: This good condition Parker was manufactured in 1910, it has 2 1/2″ chambers and automatic ejectors. The barrel is 28″ choke improved modified/ modified. The LOP is 14 1/4, DAH is 2 7/8 and DAC is 1 3/4, weight is 6lb 14oz. The 14 1/4 LOP is to end of the pad and the gun is on a 1 frame. I do have a Parker Gun Club letter for the gun, it was ordered by the Tufts Lyons Arms Co. of Los Angeles Ca. on October 22, 1908.

Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun
Parker DHE 16ga Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun

The Hawkins recoil pad was added to the gun. There is still 95% finish on the barrel, looks to be original and 30% muted case color. The quality refinished wood has crisp checkering with small dings. The only issue that I know of is a repair on the forearm a small crack that was professionally repaired, you have to look for it. Price: $4250

Auction alert: 16g Parker GHE, No Reserve ….

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28" Shotgun
1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun

Classic. American. Grouse gun. Here it is, and it’s on Gunbroker.com now, being auctioned off at no reserve. The listing ends 11/4/2018 @ 8:43 PM.

The Parker GHE (a quality GH gun with Ejectors), was a lower, middle-grade gun in its day. Parker called it “a gun of exceptional value,” so it wasn’t cheap, but it offered a lot of nice features at a fair price.

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28" Shotgun
1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun

This one is in what I would called “honest wear” condition. It looks like it was shot a lot, and a lot of the original finish is gone. There’s a pronounced crack in the forend, too. But that crack looks fixable and the rest of the gun looks sound.

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun: This Parker Brothers shotgun shows a Serial Number of: 235828. Length of Pull measures 13.5″ to back trigger. Length of Pull measures 14.5 to the forward trigger. Manufacture date is listed as 1931. This classic representation has Upland Game Scenes engraved on the frame. Barrel length is listed at 28″. In the select world of vintage American double barrel shotguns, the name Parker Brothers stands in a class of their own. The Parker Gun Collectors Association has done a great job fostering knowledge on these fine guns, which many believe to be America’s finest. This GHE shows:

  • Serial Stamp is 235828.
  • Frame Size “1”
  • “16/1” on the barrel lug
  • Barrel flat shows 3 1 indicating barrel weight.
  • Watertable is stamped GH indicating grade.
  • Barrel is stamped “Special Steel”
  • Watertable is stamped “2”

This 1931 example is in very fine condition showing a proud degree of the original blue finish and case coloring. The select grade American hardwood stock and forearm show a rich texture and grain profile. The original dog’s head buttplate is featured and also remains in excellent condition. The lettering and engraving and screws are all in superb condition and look clocked properly along the axis of the gun. The triggers are crisp and break clean. There are fewer and fewer 16ga. Parkers with 28” Parker Special Steel barrels remaining original condition. The forearm shows small imperfections but remains solid throughout. A most gorgeous Parker Brother SXS Shotgun for your consideration. We have opened the gun and photographed the internal proofs in detail.

Lot # 1022: FRENCH MANUFRANCE MODEL IDEAL 2R SXS SHOTGUN

When I first got into doubles, Stephen Bodio’s Good Guns Again was one of my favorite books.  I agree completely with how one reviewer summed it up: “…Bodio at his finest, the unleashed, unfettered gun fanatic, haunting the gun shops, evaluating, and offering a unique insight into the world of sporting firearms.”

Of all the unique insights Bodio offered it, many were focused on what makes a gun special, unique or good. The 16 gauge French SxS you see here was one he thought was more than just “good”. He thought it was spectacular (and one of the prettiest shotguns ever made).

Lot # 1022: FRENCH MANUFRANCE MODEL IDEAL 2R 16g SXS SHOTGUN

Manufrance Ideals are the French version of a Dickson round action. With a Rigby-style rising bite action, coil springs and a triggerplate design, they’re simple, rugged, and elegant. That little lever behind the trigger opens the gun and cocks it after firing. It also makes these side-by-sides a pleasure to use.

This model would be a great grouse gun — and it’s built-in, retractable leather sling is just plain cool (and rare to see intact in these). BTW: You can see more Ideals and learn more about them here.

Parker DH 16 Gauge - "O" FRAME - SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUS
Parker DH 16 Gauge – “O” FRAME – SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUS

Spend some time looking at old doubles and you’ll discover Parker shotguns are not hard to find. That’s because Parker Bros and Remington built around 242,500 of them.

But very few of the ones you’ll see out there are like this one. It’s a 16g DH with damascus barrels, a long length of pull (14 3/4″), and an 0 frame (the lightweight size for 16s). Those four features put it in the hard-to-find/rare category when it comes to Parkers. It condition puts it in the have-to-have category when it comes to collecting.

Parker DH 16 Gauge - "O" FRAME - SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUS
Parker DH 16 Gauge – “O” FRAME – SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUS

Of course, it’s not cheap. But if you’re balking at the price, ask yourself this: When are you going to see another one like it?

Parker DH 16 Gauge – “O” FRAME -SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUSThere are some guns that just seem special, and a Parker 16ga. on an “O” frame (20ga. frame) is just such a gun.

More than a 1/2 pound lighter than a typical Parker 16ga, the “0” frame 16 is highly sought after by today’s upland hunter. They are not common, and to find one on the nicely decorated DH Grade format is a treat. This Parker DH, sn140136 made in 1906, is stunning with 99% factory damascus pattern, 95% factory case colors, perfect bores…no flaws anywhere.

Parker DH 16 Gauge - "O" FRAME - SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUS
Parker DH 16 Gauge – “O” FRAME – SxS Shotgun, 95% FACTORY COLOR GORGEOUS

The serialization book shows it is configured just as it left the factory. They only made 458 damascus DH 16ga. guns. There can only be a handful on the highly desirable “O” frame. At 6lbs. 2oz. it is a delightful gun that will not wear you out by the end of the day. The wood on this Parker is incredible, with full flame and feather-crotch figure finished in a hand-rubbed oil finish, a 14 ¾” LOP to the skeleton butt plate, and modern shooting dimensions (shown below) and perfect mechanics. This unusual combination of features makes it a very desirable Parker the likes of which you may never again see for sale, so don’t hesitate on “pulling the trigger” with this purchase.

This little Parker will be a joy to carry afield or to your favorite clays course and we don’t expect it will be for sale for any length of time. This is the kind of Parker that will continue to gain value as you enjoy its use with its high factory original condition on all the metal, very rare configuration on the “O” frame, low production numbers, awesome stock dimensions, and knock-out wood that is eye candy to all gun lovers! Thanks for looking at our fine guns. Price: $8,950

Auction alert: 16g A.H. Fox A-grade SxS. No reserve…

Ansley H. Fox 16ga. Side by Side. 28"brls. Grade "A"
Ansley H. Fox 16ga. Side by Side. 28″brls. Grade “A”

Here’s a great way to get into vintage doubles. This side-by-side is an “A” Grade A.H. Fox. It’s in the greatest gauge — 16 — and it has a hard-to-find round-knob grip. It even comes with what appears to be its original hang tag. It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the listing ends tomorrow, 12/6/2017, @ 2:32 PM.

This sxs is a true A.H. Fox, made in Philadelphia, PA, by the original company before it was bought  by Savage Arms in 1929. Back when it was made, it was low-grade model. That being said, the company claimed “You can search through the world’s gun market and not find a better, truer shotgun at the price than the “A” Grade FOX.” Perhaps.

BTW: Be sure you check out this gun thoroughly before bidding. It’s listed as an “AS IS” sale. So there are no refunds or exchanges if you get it.

Charles Lancaster 12 ga. Percussion SxS Double

Percussion SxS Double: Circa 1840s, S/N 1989, 12 ga. percussion, 30″ Damascus barrels bear initials “CL”.  Rib inscribed “Charles Lancaster 151 New Bond Street London”.  Nice original example with some repair to the top left hammer.  Wonderful stock, original checkering, fire-blued steel buttplate.  Bores appear mint.  Shot and powder flasks, tools in leather pouch, original maker’s oak case. This is a best gun of the period. Lancaster began in 1811 as a gun barrel maker, then set up shop as a gunmaker at 151 New Bond Street, building guns of the highest quality.  His barrels were used in the early guns of Joseph Manton and James Purdey.  Really neat ” barn find”.  Price: $2,500

Good gun alert: 16 gauge Winchester M21, 28″, double triggers…

Winchester Model 21 16 Gauge SxS, 28”, Double Triggers, Ejectors
Winchester Model 21 16 Gauge SxS, 28”, Double Triggers, Ejectors

When I first saw  this side-by-side I though “Holy Sh!t”. While sixteen gauge Winchester Model Twenty Ones aren’t hard to find, ones with 28″ barrels, double triggers AND ejectors are rarer than Irish men named Ari.

Then I saw the gun’s wart: A buttstock with 3 5/8″ of drop in it. Whoever ordered it must have been built like a giraffe –or Twitter’s Jack Dorsey.
If you’ve always wanted a M21 set up like this and can deal with all the drop (or you don’t mind restocking it), go for it. If not, you can wait for the next one to pop up. But be forewarned: You’ll wait a L-O-N-G time.
