W.J. Jeffery & Co. London sidelock with wonderful and realistic engraved dog scenes: Hammerless Sidelocks – Check out the engraving on this gun. A lot of gun in a little package: A 2″ 12g from Charles Hellis ….

Beautiful and ultra lightweight 12 bore Charles Hellis 2" Chambered boxlock SxS game gun
Beautiful and ultra lightweight 12 bore Charles Hellis 2″ Chambered boxlock SxS game gun

From the 1860s to 1980s, twelve gauges ruled in my blog. They were the standard game gun and what most men shot. After the first World War, there was a movement in the UK toward lighter and lighter doubles, and 2″ 12gs like the one you see here were the result. These guns weigh 6lbs or less, but shill had the proportions and feel of a standard British game gun.

Today, these guns are ideal for upland hunting, especially over pointing dogs. These guns throw great patterns and they’re built to push 7/8-ounces of lead, enough to knock down quail, woodcock, and most grouse.

Extremely fine Parker VH 20ga with original hang tags
Extremely fine Parker VH 20ga with original hang tags

Extremely fine Parker VH 20ga with original hang tags: Rarely do we find Parkers in high original condition – even more rarely do we find them with original hang tags. Even more rare than that, is to have the lineage of the gun from the day it was born until today. This little VH 20ga was purchased by legendary Parker collector, Charlie Price from the original owner’s son some 30+ years ago.  The gun is a fine VH 20ga with 28″ Vulcan steel barrels made in 1921 and letters almost exactly as found today. It has a splinter forend, double triggers, extractors, and auto safety. The gun has a full pistol grip buttstock and the original DHBP. A photo of the PGCA Letter is attached. The gun remains in superb original untouched condition with more than 85% original case color. The barrels retain about 90% original blue with some minor spotting towards the muzzle. Stocks are crisp and sound and retain more than 95% original finish. The gun measures 14″ LOP with drops of 1-1/2″ and 3″ at heel- exactly as ordered. Gun has original 2-1/2″ chambers. Chokes measure .005 in the right and .017 in the left with bores both measuring .622. MWT are .022 (R) and .024(L). Original hangtags included. Finding these high condition smallbore Parkers is fun and this one is a gem. Having been the best one Charlie Price was able to acquire is like the cherry on top!  Price: $8995

William Greener 10g Percussion Side-by-Side 1853 New York Exhibition
William Greener 10g Percussion Side-by-Side 1853 New York Exhibition

William Greener 10g Percussion Side-by-Side 1853 New York Exhibition: An incredible William Greener 10g Percussion Gun made for the 1853 New York Exhibition and remains in remarkable original condition.   The gun is fitted with bar action locks with “Newcastle” style hammers and engraved in wonderful game scenes, obviously inspiring the engraving patterns of the later W.W. Greener high-grade guns. The right lock plate shows two setters pointing a brace of grouse, one looking over its shoulder (a tell-tell characteristic of original Greener guns). The left lock shows two running setters behind the hammers and a brace of snipe, one flushing one looking over its shoulder surrounded by full coverage and expertly engraved acanthus scroll, The trigger bow engraving shows a brace of pointers surrounded by scroll. Hammers and the breach block feature a dog’s head surrounded by matching scroll engraving. Furniture is also fully covered in matching scroll. The 29 3/4″ William Greener’s Laminated Steel barrels have a smooth game rib, platinum inlays with extensive engraving scroll along the full length of the rib, at the breaches, in the middle of the barrels and at the muzzles. The highly figured walnut is beautifully checkered in a point pattern on a straight hand grip and forend.  The stock has a 14″ LOP over a smooth steel butt plate with a game scene engraved 4-tiered “widow’s peak” depicting a brace of pheasant, the hen flushing, and the rooster looking over his shoulder surrounded by matching scroll. The original gold-stock shield between the hammers remains blank. Finally, the gun is housed in its original Oak & Leather case lined in a blue calf’s skin with its original trade label and host of accouterments.  Retains probably 20% original case colors in protected areas. Much of the original black remains on trigger bow and there are strong traces of original black on trigger bow tang and butt plate. The balance of metal having a soft silvered patina and the engraving remains sharp showing all its original shading and detail. The platinum letters on top rib remain all intact and remain flush. The bores remain in excellent condition and the barrels are bulge and dent free. Finally, the original case remains sound and sturdy and in equally remarkable condition as the gun. In addition to its history and provenance, this is without a doubt the oldest gun I have ever handled in such high, original condition and a testament to the illustrious reputation the elder Greener is famous for.  Price: $25,000

It’s a 12 gauge J. Dickson & Son boxlock ejector with short, 2″ chambers. Twelve gauge shotguns with two-inch chambers were popular in the 1930s. People liked how they were lightweight guns, but they were still big enough to feel right to people who had always shot 12-gauge guns.

PURDEY BEST PRE WAR SXS 2" LIGHTWEIGHT GUME GUN 12 GAUGE
PURDEY BEST PRE WAR SXS 2″ LIGHTWEIGHT GUME GUN 12 GAUGE

The one thing collector’s want most is original condition. Here’s an aweseome side-by-side Purdey shotguns with plenty of it. Just check out the color-case hardening on the action and the crispness of the wood. Great engraving, too.

Since its founding in 1814, Purdey has built 30,000+ firearms. I doubt they’ve built many like this, though. It’s a lightweight (5lb, 8oz) 12 gauge made to shoot 2″ shells. Of course, it’s built on Purdey’s famous Beesley action and appear to be in very nice original condition.

Twelve gauges with 2″ chambers were introduced by British makers in the 1930s and marketed as “featherweight” models.

Daily Double: an Alex Martin 2″ 12 gauge…

Alexander Martin 2" 12 gauge double barrel shotgun
Alexander Martin 2" 12 gauge double barrel shotgun
Two-inch twelve gauge shotguns have never been very popular. Designed to be full bodied substitutes for small bores, the two-inchers give you the light weight of a 20 gauge on the large sized frame of a twelve. The result is a sub six-pound side-by-side that fits better in a adult shooter’s hands.

While it sounds like a great idea, it’s not one that really took off. Today, for every 200 hundred standard British boxlocks you see, you may come across a single 2″ example. Usually, these loners are pretty worn, and they often have 26″ barrels and short stocks. That’s why this Alex Martin caught my eye.

Check out the pics and specs below and you’ll see a near-new, original gun with great dimensions. Best of all, it’s price is very fair: just  £2995.
