Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge
Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge

Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge: This is the first 7E Grade Ithaca we have ever seen, which is understandable since there were only 22 or 25 ever manufactured.  According to Walter C. Snyder, an Historian of the Ithaca Gun Company, this shotgun was shipped to an undisclosed location on 12/5/44.  The condition is superb, as one might expect from such a high grade shotgun, it shows almost no wear or evidence of use.  The blue and case-colors are near 100%, the bores are perfect and the highly figured American Walnut stock is ornately checkered and is in near new condition.  It appears that the only non-original part is a proper “sunburst” Ithaca marked reproduction recoil pad.  The case hardened receiver is highly engraved and has six gold inlays including 2 ducks, 2 pheasants, a dog holding a duck and a bald eagle complete with a white gold head.  The shotgun is fitted with ejectors, double gold plated triggers, and the barrels are 28 inches in length, choked full and full (0040″ + .0040″).  The stock dimensions are: 14 inch length-of-pull, 2 3/4 inch drop at the heel and 1 3/4 inch drop at the comb.  The weight is 7 lbs. 13 oz.   The 7E Grade Ithaca is one of the rarest of all American Doubles and it would be hard to find a better one.  Comes with a letter from the Chronicler of the Ithaca Gun Company dated 9/5/07.  Price: $35,000

A.H. Fox XE, SxS Shotgun, Two Barrel Set:

A.H. Fox XE, SxS Shotgun, Two Barrel Set: This is an A.H. Fox XE 12 gauge shotgun, with a 2nd barrel set fit by Turnbull Restoration. This classic American double gun carries serial number 29317, and is dated from 1924. Metal restoration was performed by Turnbull, and included light polishing, engraving was not re-cut (see photos); color case hardening of receiver, top lever and forend iron/latch; trigger reshaped to mid-position; both sets of barrels were polished and rust blued by us. The Fox has been utilized by its owner since restoration, so it does carry some handling marks. This Fox’s original barrel set is 28″ in length. A 2nd barrel set at 26″ was fit by Turnbull Restoration and engraved to match the original set. Wood condition is very good with minor handling marks. We did not work on this Fox’s wood, and appears to have been refinished by a 3rd party at some point. We replaced the original broken grip cap. 28″ barrel set (original): Cylinder/Improved Cylinder, 2-1/2″ chambers. 26″ heavey barrel set: Improved Cylinder/Modified, 3″ chambers with long forcing cones. Price: $20,000

Exceedingly Rare Lefever FE Grade 20ga with beautiful Damascus barrels
Exceedingly Rare Lefever FE Grade 20ga with beautiful Damascus barrels

Exceedingly Rare Lefever FE Grade 20ga with beautiful Damascus barrels: For your consideration is an extremely rare Lefever FE Grade 20ga gun. Anyone who knows Lefever guns, knows well that the Lefever small bore guns simply don’t exist in nature. They are really rare and hard to find. This particular Lefever has gorgeous 28″ American Flag Damascus pattern. They are a thing of beauty!!!  The gun has DT, AE, and auto safety. The capped PG buttstock is checkered in a two-point pattern. The splinter forend is checkered in typical later FE pattern with engraved steel escutcheon. The action is engraved in typical FE pattern with flying duck on left, falling woodcock on right surrounded by light scroll engraving. The gun retains more than 1/2 of its original case color, particularly nice and dark on the left side and on top. Barrels retain about 85%+ original damascus pattern. Screws are all excellent and the gun is totally unmolested. The stocks are sound and measure 2″ DAC, 3-1/4″ DAH and LOP is 13-3/4″ over the original lined HRBP. Both barrels measure .620 on the money, and the chokes are .012 (right) and .020 (left). Min walls are about.028 in each barrel. The gun weighs right at 6lbs. This is an extremely rare gun and easily one of the top FE 20ga I have seen in more than 25 years of aggressively chasing Lefevers. Price: $6895

10g Joseph Lang & a .410 Francotte: Two SxS shotguns coming up at Poulin Auctions …

Here are two more nice doubles coming up at Poulin Auctions 2018 Fall sale, which starts this Saturday, 10/20.

This Lang is a converted pinfire and an interesting piece of history. Lang was one of the first British makers to build breechloading shotguns, and I bet this gun was among the first ones he built.

Holloway (G&S) - 28 Gauge - B. Jenkins of NY, NY - 1952 build - 26” - M/IM - 14 3/4” LOP - 5 lbs!
Holloway (G&S) – 28 Gauge – B. Jenkins of NY, NY – 1952 build – 26” – M/IM – 14 3/4” LOP – 5 lbs!

Holloway (G&S) – 28 Gauge – B. Jenkins of NY, NY – 1952 build – 26” – M/IM – 14 3/4” LOP – 5 lbs!: A 28 Bore English Boxlock Ejector Game Gun that was imported by B. (Bob) Jenkinson, New York, N. Y. and so marked, Jenkinson imported a fair number of English guns in the 50’s & 60’s and I believe nearly all were made by Holloway, This 28 Bore was made in 1952, 26″ dovetail lump barrels at .550 .013 & .016″ (Mod. & Imp. Mod.), Original 2 3/4″ chambers, Proved in Birmingham at 3/4 ounce, Double triggers, Splinter forend with an Anson release, Straight hand stock at 14 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/4″ over a checkered butt, Slight cast-off with a swept comb that points like a dream, 28 bore weight at 5 lbs. 1 oz., 60% coverage of English scroll, Nice wood, The original barrel blue at 99%, The gun retains 98% original bright & vivid case colors, The stock finish is original and at 99%, The checkering at 100%, The blue on the floorplate, trigger guard, trigger guard tang and forend metal is 99%, The bores are as new from breech to muzzle, The gun is smack on the face with plenty of bite, The barrels ring with a nice chime. This is flat out one nice 1952 English boxlock with excellent workmanship on both the metal & wood. The stock inletting is superb and the checkering is as well cut as you will find on any English Best Sidelock. This is like buying it new in 1952. The Jenkinson serial # is 700 and the Holloway # is 22734. Holloway & Co. has been around since the 19th century. They had premises at 10-12 & 14 Vesey Street in Birmingham. In 1901 Tommy Naughton was the manager at Holloway & Co. and he bought the firm and it became Holloway & Naughton Ltd. but they continued business separately. G & S (George & Sidney) Holloway were for the most part makers to the trade and maintained an excellent reputation before and after WWII. About 1978 production of new Holloway guns was dropped but they continued with repairs. Graham Clive Holloway of G & S Holloway died in February of 1994 and that was the end of an era for G & S Holloway. To this day Holloway & Naughton shotguns are still made and manufactured to the client’s individual requirements and they can be found at hollowaynaughton.co.uk B. (Bob) Jenkinson was a dealer in many Holloway made guns during the 1950’s & 1960’s in New York City. Price: $11,995

Lefever EE Grade 12ga. SxS Shotgun – BEAUTIFUL DAMASCUS, GREAT DIMENSIONS

Lefever EE Grade 12ga. SxS Shotgun – BEAUTIFUL DAMASCUS, GREAT DIMENSIONS: 1901, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 10oz, SxS Serial Number: 35307E. Most who pursue American doubles are aware that Lefever Arms Co. of Syracuse, N.Y. produced very elegant shotguns.  The engraving is better than most in its tasteful application, the frames were ornately sculpted and shaped, and the workmanship overall was superior to the competition of the day.  With the last Lefever being produced in 1919, Lefever produced relatively few guns; in the range of 50.000 or so in all grades and gauges, most being lower grade guns.  Mr. Elliot’s book “Uncle Dan Lefever—Master Gunmaker” notes few high-grade Lefevers were produced, and most gunners that search for fine American vintage double guns are aware that there are few Lefever EE Grade guns ever seen for sale, especially in great original condition.  MOST IMPORTANTLY, THIS LEFEVER, SN35307 MADE IN 1901, RETAINS PLENTY OF  FACTORY ORIGINAL CASE COLORS. Price: $4,450

Pre-WW2 Merkel .410 OU, 28″ barrels

Wow — now here’s a super cool little gun. Most of old .410s I see have short barrels and stubby stocks. Not this one. It has 28″ tubes and a 14″ LOP, so it’s enough gun for most of us to shoot. I would love to get it in my hands and check it out. Check out how the action is filed up. Great work.

A beautiful pair of Boss .410 SxS shotguns …

BOSS & Co. BEST PAIR SXS 410 SHOTGUNS
BOSS & Co. BEST PAIR SXS 410 SHOTGUNS

A Boss is beauty. Side-by-side and over-unders by this maker can be stunning, and the nicest Bosses are some of the finest shotguns ever built in London, the UK, and the world.

The pair of Boss & Co. SxSs  you see here is near this top — especially for modern guns. They’re .410s, and they were made in 2002/2003.

Notice how Boss put a nice black on the triggerguard, toplever, and forend iron? That’s the classic British way to finish these parts (sometimes the forend iron was color-case hardened). Unfortunately, not every maker does this today. Some are color-case hardening all these parts. This is a shame.

BOSS & Co. BEST PAIR SXS 410 SHOTGUNS
BOSS & Co. BEST PAIR SXS 410 SHOTGUNS

Another thing I like about these guns is the nitre-blue finish on the safety, the toplever pin, the hinge-pin cap, the pin at the front of the triggerplate, and the one securing the metalwork in the forend. Some of these details are signature elements of Boss’s house style, and it’s good to see the company was holding themselves to those standards when they built these SxSs.  Again, not every British maker does that anymore.

Scaling a sidelock down to a .410 is hard to do. Some parts — like mainsprings and the ejector work — can only get so small before they fail to work. Others parts have to be a certain size to be functional (that’s why the triggers and the triggerguard bows on these look a little big). These factors can distort the gun’s proportions and throw off the lines of the entire shotgun.

I don’t think that’s the case with these guns. They look perfectly proportioned and as nice as a 12g Boss.

For real? The finest Parker .410 ever offered…

PARKER- CHE .410ga. -
PARKER- CHE .410ga. –

Could this be the finest .410 Parker in existence? Perhaps. It’s a CHE (Quality 4) and Connecticut Shotgun just listed it on Gunsinternational.com.

Parker introduced their C-grade guns in 1875. They were never very popular, and the company built fewer than 1,900 C-grades in all (1,673 were hammerless modles, or CHs). Very few of these CHs were .410s – fewer than a dozen, I bet.

According to the book American & British .410 Shotguns, the late Bill Jaqua thought Parker .410 CHE No. 241429 (28″ bbls, single trigger, beavertail forend, capped pistol grip, vent rib) was most likely  “…the finest Parker .410 shotgun know to exist…” Judging pics of #241429 in that book, this gun is crisper and more original.

Dream doubles: Boss .410 shotguns in Julia’s upcoming Fall 2014 sale…

BOSS .410 OVER-UNDER, SIDELOCK EJECTOR, SINGLE TRIGGER GAME GUN WITH CASE
BOSS .410 OVER-UNDER, SIDELOCK EJECTOR, SINGLE TRIGGER GAME GUN WITH CASE

I already put up a post about these incredible Boss shotguns. Now that the auctioneer has posted a complete set of pics and a full description for each one, I wanted to mention them again. They are that stunning — and rare.

.410 Boss & Co. Side-by-Side Shotgun

.410 Boss & Co. Over-Under Shotgun

These shotguns are best-quality, London-made sidelock .410s by Boss & Co: a side-by-side and an over under. Ordered in the 1950s, they are in incredible original condition. Pre-auction estimates put their value at $135,000+ a piece. The final hammer price will probably be much higher – especially for the O/U. Last spring, a set of 28 gauge Bosses in similar condition came up at Julia’s. The final prices for those 28g guns were $138,000 for the SxS and $207,000 for the O/U.

Is this the finest L.C. Smith .410 Field Featherweight around?

.410 L.C. Smith Field Featherweight Shotgun
.410 L.C. Smith Field Featherweight Shotgun

If you collect small bore L.C. Smiths, here’s one that will get your hear pounding. It’s a .410 L.C. Smith Field Grade, and it appears to be in pristine original condition. Its on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends on 3/9/2014 @ 8:30:00 PM ET.

L.C. Smith shipped their first .410 in October of  1926. According to the L.C. Smith Collector’s Association website, this gun was made soon after in 1927. In all the company made 2,665 .410s — 2,509 in the Field grade.

L.C. Smith made Field grades 1912 – 1950. They were the company’s least expensive guns and L.C. Smith advertised them as  “…especially designed for those requiring a cheap, sound and plainly finished weapon. It is particularly useful for field and marsh where rough usage is required.” It looks like this .410 never saw that rough usage.

L.C. Smith FeatherWeight Field shotgun in .410 Ga.: Original 26″ barrels choked Full/Full. The blue, vivid case colors and stock varnish are all original! Not Restored! This shotgun is as it was shipped out in 1927! Don’t be fooled by the flat top checkering, that is Not wear! That was how L.C. Smith checkered a field grade gun back then! And that stock is in spectacular condition! There are however some cloth pattern “imprints” in the varnish. This gun was wrapped in cloth and stored for many years. It was a closet find that recently surfaced in my area! There is also a repair on the forearm tip area. Near impossible to see, looks like a dark grain line! No other cracks anywhere and very few handling marks, this sweetheart is very, very little fired and little used! Still has the original butt plate as well!

.410 L.C. Smith Field Featherweight Shotgun
.410 L.C. Smith Field Featherweight Shotgun

Action is smooth and tight just like a new gun! Lever is to the right. The bores are perfect, mirror bright and no dents. The Chambers are 2 1/2″. This gun was stored so long, I had my gunsmith inspect and test fire it, and it shoots just great! The barrel blue is original, thick and rich, just a hint of wear at the muzzles and some tiny marks and blems near the chambers! The original Niter blue on the trigger guard is wonderful, and there is no wear at the tang area! The receiver case colors are original from 1927! There are a very few and scattered blems and speckles, nothing big or bad! The weight of this wonderful LC Smith .410 is 5lb 8oz., LOP is 14 1/4″, Drop is 2 1/2″.
