Fox A Grade 16 Gauge – RARE WELL-FIGURED ENGLISH STOCK, Vintage Firearms, Inc

Fox A Grade 16 Gauge – RARE WELL-FIGURED ENGLISH STOCK, Vintage Firearms, Inc: General Specs: Year 1937, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 4oz, Chokes IC/IM Factory, LOP 14 1/8″, DAH 2 3/16″, DAC 1 3/8″
Serial Number: 303595. Ansley H. Fox created a timeless, high quality, simply designed box lock at his A.H. Fox Gun Co. in Philadelphia, PA.  Most vintage side x side lovers are well-aware the 20ga. and 16ga. Fox guns are the most dynamic, lightweight, best handling American double guns ever created.  Best of all, the 16ga. guns were all built on the diminutive 20ga. frame.  This Fox A Grade, sn303595 made in 1937, is one of only 2500 Fox A Grade 16ga. guns ever made, with about 2200 remaining in existence due to loss and destruction, so there are few offered for sale.  Only 10% or so were ever made with the English style stock, or maybe a few hundred in existence.  IF YOU ARE ONE WHO LOVES STRAIGHT STOCKED UPLAND GUNS…THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO OWN THE PERFECT LITTLE FOX 16GA.!  Straight gripped guns almost never surface for sale.  In this Fox we have a solid gun with excellent screws, factory 26” number 3 weight barrels factory choked IC/IM with mirror bores, factory bore diameter, 99% rich rust blue, double ivory beads, and lots of barrel wall thickness (see tables below for specs).  The ribs are tight, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever right of center…like a new gun.  Take a good look at the photos and you will see a truly gorgeous Fox A Grade that has everything going for it.  She is one of those guns that just looks “right”.  The wood figure and finish is stunning, the wood-to-metal fit is superb, the action retains 70% factory case color and the engraving is sharp and clear, …JUST A CLASSY LOOKING FOX!  Even the genuine Silvers pad has that aged look and is fit to perfection.  Search long and hard and you will not find another Fox A Grade 16 with all these great features.  What a great upland gun choked perfect for nearly any bird on the North American continent.  Weighing just 6 1/4lbs. you can carry this gun all day over hill and dale without getting “long arms” by the end of the day.  This is a gun with enough wear on it that you will not feel bad taking it afield and shooting your vintage gun at clay targets.  This is the epitome of an investment quality Fox with desirable features, and affordability.  Price: $5,950

Boxlock 12Ga. Shotgun By Alfred Davis of London
Boxlock 12Ga. Shotgun By Alfred Davis of London

Boxlock 12Ga. Shotgun By Alfred Davis of London: A very nice 12 gauge boxlock by Alfred Davis of London. This gun was built in the late 1920s and has 28″ barrels choked skeet (.004″) and full .035″). The gun is in excellent condition retaining around 40% of the original case colors, 95% of the original barrel blue, and 98% of the original wood finish. The receiver is scroll engraved in standard English scroll. The gun has very good stock dimensions of 14″ x 1 1/2″ x2 1/4″. The chambers are 2 1/2″ and the bores are mint and free of any dents or pits. The barrels are in proof and on face. They lock up with no play or looseness. The gun weighs 6lbs, 3oz and balances on the hinge. It comes cased in the original makers case with case labels and a reproduction copy of Davis’s catalog. This would make a great grouse, woodcock, or quail gun. It would also be a fine pheasant gun for walking those big cornfields. A great value in an English double. Price: $1595

Good gun alert: 12 gauge A.H. Fox double barrel shotgun…

Ansley H. Fox, XE Grade, 12 Gauge, Double Barrel Shotgun
Ansley H. Fox, 12 Gauge, Double Barrel Shotgun

NOTE: Even though the seller has listed this gun as an XE, it appears to be a CE-grade Fox Shotgun. My mistake.

Knowing when to stop is crucial to embellishing a shotgun. Too much engraving, fancy checkering, cakey wood, or gold ruins a SxS or O/U. Too little leaves a gun looking dull and unfinished. Getting it just right is the trick.

Fox’s XE grades were higher grade doubles in their day, not the very best, but very, very good, and quite expensive. They featured Automatic Ejectors, a Silver’s Recoil Pad and Lyman Sights. The stocks were made of Circassian Walnut and oil finished with a  full pistol, half pistol, straight grip, or  Monte-Carlo style grip. They were offered with Chromox Fluid Steel in 26 “, 28″, 30″ & 32” barrels. Like all Fox shotguns, they came in 12 gauge, 16 gauge and 20 gauge.

From A.H. Fox, via the A.H. Fox Collectors Association website:

Ansley H. Fox, XE Grade, 12 Gauge, Double Barrel Shotgun
Ansley H. Fox, 12 Gauge, Double Barrel Shotgun

“The XE is the result of the increasing demand for a gun which shall be as nearly perfect for the purpose as it is possible to be made. Each gun receives and elaborate amount of handwork, which.. is still the only way to produce a really accurate and high grade gun.”

Here’s more about the one you see here from the seller:
