This rifle is chambered for .450 Black Powder Express (.450 314-inch BPE), one of the most popular rounds of the late 19th century. Many different types of rifles were chambered for .450 BPE and these guns were used for everything from deer stalking in Scotland to elephant hunting in Africa. The round was replaced by the more potent .450 Nitro Express in 1898 (BTW: go here to see how the .450NE compares to a .470NE).

Along with the gun’s original finish and overall finish, a few things about it caught my eye, from the engraving and the ribbon fences to the wide top strap, the long top lever, and the toe-and-heel plates. While this wasn’t a best-quality gun in its day, it was a very nice one.

Rizzini is a highly respected Italian maker of fine shotguns for both the target games and hunting live game.  Having been in business for decades in Italy’s valley of gunmakers, Rizzini is synonymous with quality and innovation.  I am quite impressed with this attractive Upland EL side x side, sn63092 made in 2007.  The diminutive boxlock action with double underlug bites has a fancy scalloped back of the action, sculpted bottom of the frame, gold inlaid lettering, no visible screws, beautiful factory case color, a pierced top lever, and deeply chiseled oak leaf engraved breech balls and some nice scroll engraved on the trigger guard, all appearing to be hand cut and signed by the engraver (signed inc. Ri. Pa).  This gun is nicely adorned with ejectors and a well-designed single selective trigger, both expensive and desirable options on an upland game gun.  The wood is very nicely figured European walnut with borderless checkering and a near perfect hand-rubbed oil finish with only one very minor handling mark on the right side of the buttstock.  The 29” finely struck barrels retain 99% of their factory blue, chambered for 3” modern shells, with a concave game rib, perfect mirror bores, and choked IC/LM for the ultimate upland gun.  This gun is a delight in hand as well, weighing 6lbs. 1oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin, she is a very dynamic handling gun. Army & Navy CSL ~ BLE ~ 12 Ga

I’ve been looking at this double for a while, and I can’t figure out why its price is so low.

Army & Navy CSL ~ BLE ~ 12 Ga
Army & Navy CSL ~ BLE ~ 12 Ga

Not only is a Birmingham-built SxS that uses one of the most reliable actions of all time (the Anson & Deeley boxlock), but it also appears to be in excellent original condition. Does it have any faults? Maybe its weight. It’s not light, but it weighs as much as a lot of 16g Parkers (and some 20g Parkers).

Good gun alert: A 16 gauge SxS by Army & Navy…

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful
Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful

What am I missing here? I’ve looked at this side-by-side a bunch of times, and I just don’t see any warts. Sure it has been reblued and the wood has been redone, but if the barrels are really tight and on the face, and if the gun is in proof, it’s a great deal.

The Army & Navy Co-operative Society was an organization on the UK that bought all sorts of good and supplies at low prices to members of the military. It evolved into a group of department stores carrying everything from home furnishings to firearms — sort of like Sears back in its heyday.

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful
Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful

Army & Navy carried all types of doubles, from top-quality sidelocks to lower-end boxlock shotguns like the 16 gauge you see here. All of these guns were made in the UK, probably by Webley & Scott. Every one I’ve seen has been a solid, reliable shotgun, and I suspect the same is true with this one.

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautifulThis is a small framed 16 ga Army & Navy with 28 inch mod and improved chokes. Barrels are tight on the face, perfect bores, and min wall thickness of .30 in both barrels, nitro proofed at 3 tons. The stock is very sound with no cracks or issues, beautifully figured, LOP is 15.5 inches. The gun weighs just 5.5 pounds. Comes with a restored and fitted H&H case. 2 1/2″ inch shells, non-ejector, case not included. Price: $950

He may be needed the 10 pounds more than the gun as he damn sure didn’t wear this piece out. R. Gurney was born in 1875 in Surrey, England and was with the Suffolk Regiment in 1929. It makes you wonder if he ever returned home as it appears this gun was put away for a very long time. Price: $5,950.00
