Good gun alert: 20 gauge Beretta ASE, 28″ bbls, double triggers …

20 gauge Beretta ASE, 28" barrels, Double triggers
20 gauge Beretta ASE, 28″ barrels, Double triggers

Here’s one of the holy grails of grouse and quail guns. It’s a 20 gauge Beretta ASE, and what makes it so very special are the  28″ barrels and proper double triggers (most have 26 1/2″ bbls and single triggers). While it’s priced on the strong side, it just might be worth it. The 28″-bbls & double triggers configuration is just that hard to find.

Beretta introduced the ASEs in 1949 as lightweight hunting guns, and the company made them into the 1960s (the current ASEs are heavier, target guns, and not as nice). Early ASEs shotguns came in 2 gauges (12g and 20g) and 3 grades (ASE, ASEL, and ASEELL). I’ve been told that they were all made in Beretta S- and then SO -shop, the place where the company made it’s sidelock OUs. I’ve read that the ASEs used many of same features and parts as well, along with a great deal hand fitting. That made these guns very quality — probably among the highest-quality boxlock OUs every built in Italy.

rifling in both barrels is very good with a teeny bit of pitting in each. There is very generous engraving on the action and lock plates and it is sharp with some color remaining in protected areas. The fore end has a lever style release and across the steel butt plate is written, “charge 120 grains”.  The length of pull is 14 5/8″ and it tips the scales at a fraction under 9lbs.  The only known defects are a 1/2″ crack in the heal of the stock just in front of the widow’s peak of the buttplate and a one inch sliver missing from the fore end, both of which are pictured and why I’m not asking $7500.  The stock has what I believe to be original finish, the checkering is very good, with handling marks comensurate to a rifle this old.  Overall, a very nice example of a fine Scottish double rifle. Price: $6,850

I’m a big fan of Beretta’s original line of ASE boxlock O/U shotguns. Beretta introduced the ASEs in 1949 as lightweight hunting guns, and the company made them into the 1960s (the current ASEs are heavier, target guns, and not as nice). The early ASEs shotguns came in 2 gauges (12g and 20g) and 3 grades (ASE, ASEL, and ASEELL).

Most of the ASEs I’ve seen have been 20 gauges. The few 12 bores I’ve come across have had 26″ or 28″ barrels.

This is the first one I’ve seen with longer, 30″, tubes. It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the auction ends tomorrow, 1/4/2014, @ 12:29:31 PM ET.

Beretta ASE-L 12ga, double triggers, 30″ light full and improved cylinder barrels: Ejectors, solid rib, new Beretta hammer springs and lever springs. New 3/4″ recoil pad with changeable 1/2″ recoil pad included. LOP to wood 14 1/16″, with 3/4″ pad 14 7/8″. Drop at heel 2 1/4″, drop at comb 1 1/2″. Made in 1954. Rare with 30″ barrels. Excellent mechanical condition with a few light handling marks.

1953 Beretta AS 20E Boxlock 20 Gauge Over Under Shotgun

I’ve written about these great little doubles a number of time before. They’re such great shotguns that very time I see one I feel obligated to let people know.

Back in 1949, Beretta introduced a line of O/Us that would become legends. The ASs were boxlock O/Us and Beretta built them as lightweight hunting guns. The shotguns came in 2 gauges (12g and 20g) and 3 grades (ASE, ASEL, and ASEELL).

1956 - Beretta ASEL - 12ga, 27-5/8" bbls
1956 – Beretta ASEL – 12ga, 27-5/8″ bbls

A fantastic O/U at a fair price — that’s what you see here. Beretta started making their AS-line of boxlock over & under shotguns in 1949 and they continued turning them out into the 1960s.

These were made for hunting (i.e., light weight compared to the later ASE target models introduced in the late ’80s). The ASELs were hand engraved and hand fitted. They eventually were replaced in the early 60s by the S5x series of beretta boxlock over/unders. The S5x series was manufactured to allow parts interchangeability without hand-fitting.

1956 - Beretta ASEL - 12ga, 27-5/8" bbls
1956 – Beretta ASEL – 12ga, 27-5/8″ bbls

Beretta build these as hunting guns, and the company offered 2 gauges (12g and 20g) and three grades (ASE, ASEL, and ASEELL). Each grade featured hand engraving and all models were build with the quality that has made these doubles so great. Toady, a lot of serious Beretta fanatics condider any of the AS-grades to be the finest boxlock O/Us shotguns Beretta ever made.
