Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga
Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga

Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga: Consigned to Cole’s is this very nice Belgian Browning Superposed Super Light in 20 ga with 26-inch barrels.  The shotgun bears serial # 223PW02990.  The bores are excellent.  The upper barrel is choked Mod (**) and the lower is choked IC (**-).  This shotgun weighs in at 5lbs 14 oz, a true super lightweight.  The shotgun has a long tang, straight grip.  The LOP is 14 ¾” and terminates with a Decelerator recoil pad.  The stock has various minor nicks and dings from days afield.    The gun is nice and tight and there is no looseness to be found open or when in battery.  The bluing is just starting to flake from the bottom of the receiver from carry.  Some very minor loss of factory finish is observed along the tang as well.  Again, this from honest use pursuing dove and quail.  One of the best I have seen or found out here in a very, very long time. Price: $4650

Let’s take a closer look: An awesome Francotte SxS …

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE

Here’s a gun you don’t see every day — and that’s one of the reasons I featured it yesterday as one of this week’s 5 doubles you don’t want to miss. The other reason? Well, just look at it.

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:

Auguste Francotte & Cie. was one of the world’s premier gunmakers. Founded in 1805, they built guns in Belgium and exported them around the world. Von Lengerke & Detmold brought them into the US from 1889 to 1929; Abercrombie & Fitch took over in 1930 and continued until 1971. Altogether, about 5,000 or so new Francottes were shipped to the US.

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:

Most were high-quality Francotte boxlocks like this and this. A few were top-of-the-line sidelocks like what you see here — possibly one of these “De Luxe” models Abercrombie & Fitch offered in 1930.

Francotte Deluxe models, from a 1930 Abercrombie & Fitch catalog

Of course, the first thing about this gun that catches your eye is the metalwork. I think it uses a combination of engraving and chasing (if I have the terms right). Overall, the work reminds me of guns done by Aristide Barré, the French artist who embellished some of the finest Purdeys out there.

FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:
FRANCOTTE PRE WAR BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR SXS 12 GAUGE:

The proportions and lines of the gun also stand out. I like how rounded the backs of the locks are and how your eye passes from there into the drip-like drop points. The stock looks broad and substantial, and there’s a little belly in it to secure and position the shooter’s hand. But it doesn’t look cumbersome or overwhelming. Overall, the gun stands out, without screaming for attention.

Auction alert: 12g Belgian Masquelier boxlock, no reserve…

Fine 12g Belgian Masquelier boxlock – Liege

Here’s another double that looks a like a deal. Masquelier was a well-known Belgian gunmaker for just over 100 hundred years. They made everything from pistols and top-quality sidelock shotguns to the kind of medium-grade boxlock shotguns you see here.

Fine 12g Belgian Masquelier boxlock – Liege

This gun is built on one of the finest shotguns designs every created — the Anson & Deeley action. From what I can see, the gun looks like it’s in great shape overall. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing end this Tuesday, 5/21/2019, @ 10:20 PM.

One thing: Ask the seller about his inspection/return policy. When buying online, a 3-day inspection/return policy is a must. Be sure he’s offering one before bidding.

Fine 12g Belgian Masquelier boxlock – Liege

Fine 12g Belgian Masquelier boxlock – Liege: This is a nice, high quality, SxS 12 ga. made in Belgium by C. Masquelier, that produced the Masquelier guns from approx. 1925 – 1956. This fine example is a 12 ga. with 70mm,2 3/4″ chambers, bright clean bores, both choked 182 – which is approx. imp. modified. However, the right muzzle is slightly more open, measuring approx. .705, the right about .700. The barrels measure approx. 27 5/8″ long. The L.O.P. to the front trigger is approx. 14 1/2″, the drop at comb 1 1/2″ and at the heel, 2 3/8″. Cast – off. The action has a Greener cross bolt, and it locks up tight. Weighs approx. 6 lbs. 14 ozs. I believe the ‘Z’ over the proof mark on the bottom of the barrels indicates a 1952 manufacture date. The nice European walnut stock is solid, no cracks. The forend does have a very small splinter missing at the left front. The barrels both have several scattered areas of light corrosion from the muzzle, down about 12 – 13″, almost all of it is on the sides, the left barrel has a bit more, with another small spot above the forearm, the top of the barrels look very nice. This is a used hunting gun, cared for, but with some cosmetic marks and use. Overall, still a nice example of a fine Belgian sxs, priced cheap! ( look at other Masqueliers), ready to hunt with.

A nice 16g SxS that doesn’t cost a fortune…

Bargain bird gun: A St. Etienne "Heliobloc" 16Ga Boxlock Side-by-Side, 2 ½” chambers, extractors
Bargain bird gun: A St. Etienne “Heliobloc” 16Ga Boxlock Side-by-Side, 2 ½” chambers, extractors

When I first got into doubles, I thought every gun with two barrels cost a fortune–especially side by sides. Of course, to a kid just out of college they did.

But as I learned more about nice shotguns, I realized not all doubles are insanely expensive. While you can easily spend $5,000 – $30,000+ on a SxS from a maker like Parker or James Purdey & Sons, you can also spend less and get one that would be an ideal bird gun.

The boxlock you see here looks like that kind of gun. Sure it’s a basic boxlock, but it’s built on one of the most reliable designs ever created (the Anson & Deeley action). With sideplates and a blued finish, it’s a nice looking gun, and because it’s European, it has that “je ne sais quoi” that set it apart from your everyday A.H. Fox or British boxlock. Best of all, it costs less than a brand-new Benelli autoloader.

Bargain bird gun: A St. Etienne "Heliobloc" 16Ga Boxlock Side-by-Side, 2 ½” chambers, extractors
Bargain bird gun: A St. Etienne “Heliobloc” 16Ga Boxlock Side-by-Side, 2 ½” chambers, extractors

St. Etienne “Heliobloc” 16Ga Boxlock Side-by-Side, 2 ½” chambers, extractors: A nice guild gun on St Etienne preferred boxlock action; the Helicobloc action works on the same principle than the Webley screw grip, but with the thread at the Bottom of the top lever spindle. This one is sideplated, double triggers, manual safety, border engraved with a black finish (90% condition). The stock is semi pistol grip with round knob, 14 ¾” LOP over .800” pad,  1 ¾” and 2 ¾” drop, ¾” cast off with nice skip line checkering and carved borders (90% finish 95% checkering). 27” tubes with dovetail lumps by Jean Breuil barrel maker (very nicely done with brazed ribs, triple-proof and Martens steel). Bores are .669, walls are .031 and chokes at .014 and .022 (mod and imp mod). Blacking is in 90% condition, the bores have light oxidation at the upper mid barrel , that I guess would clean up with a .002 honing. Price: $1,200

BROWNING – Superposed – Superlight – 20ga – O/U – All Original – Ready for the Field

While winter may is coming for Game of Thrones fans, us bird hunters have a better time of year around the corner: Fall. And if you’re chasing grouse, quail, woodcock this season, here’s the perfect OU to get things done.

Of all the Superposed shotguns Browning made, Superlight models were the trimmest. This one checks all the boxes for what a do-it-all upland gun should be: Modern dimensions, 2 3/4″ chamber, time-tested design, reliable single trigger, straight grip, lightweight. On top of all this, it’s priced very fairly and it’s just old enough to have a bit of character all its own.

J P Clabrough impressive 8 gauge Side-by-Side sidelock hammer double:

J P Clabrough impressive 8 gauge Side-by-Side sidelock hammer double: SxS hammer shotgun, circa 1887.  Until acquiring this gun I couldn’t use the words massive and beautiful in the same sentence when describing a shotgun!  The 36” barrels are Damascus steel with the pattern showing nicely, slightly browning with flawless/bright bores and chambers.  The barrels are fitted to a finely, fully engraved frame featuring with lots of scroll and game scene vignettes of pheasants on the left side and English black grouse on the right side with good traces of original colors present.  The engraved English black grouse were something of a “signature” engraving pattern on Clabrough mid and higher grade guns.  The double triggers are housed by a large trigger guard and the bottom tang that is fitted all the way to the engraved metal pistol grip cap.  The stock has a 14” LOP to the center of the original horn buttplate, 2” DAC and 3” DAH with neutral cast.  The stock and cross pin forearm have all of their original finishes with a fair amount of handling marks and yet no cracks or chips.  This is a really spectacular example of a Clabrough gun and an even more incredible example of an early 8 gauge, graded hammer gun.  By the “way” it weighs 13 lbs. 15 oz. SN:  16821  Price: $5,150

Auction alert: Great looking 12 gauge Francotte hammergun…

Rare Francotte Pre-war “Best Quality” 12 gauge SxS hammer gun
Rare Francotte Pre-war “Best Quality” 12 gauge SxS hammer gun

I used to have an itch for hammerguns, and over the years I scratched it by buying a bunch of them. The breechloading hammergun period lasted around twenty years — about 1865 to 1885 — so most of the hammerguns I picked up were real old.

But every now and then I would come across something special like the 12 gauge Francotte hammergun you see here. This hammergun is from the 20th century. Hammerguns were well out of fashion then, so whoever ordered this one wanted something special. Judging by how nice it is, they were willing to spend a lot of money to get just what they wanted.

It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the listing ends Sunday, 5/21/2017, @ 10:00 PM.

Rare Francotte Pre-war “Best Quality” SxS hammer gun: 12 gauge with 30″ Chopper Lump steel barrels & 2 3/4″ chambers. Ribs are tight.Up for auction is a hard to come by Francotte Nitro proof hammer gun. This is a top notch pre-war VL&D import gun with all of the marquee features of a true“Best gun”: Chopper Lump barrels, hidden Greener-type 3’rd fastener, double Purdey under bites, side clips, removable hinge pin, rebounding hammers, matted concave rib, articulated front trigger and nice partial coverage foliate scroll. Was restocked (fore end appears original to gun) way back when to a straight grip with a nice piece of French walnut & modern stock dimensions: 14 ¼” over original horn butt plate, 1 5/8” x 1 7/8” at heel. Excellent, un-touched “Chopper lump” 30 inch Bores @ .727 diameter per side with optimal Vintage “clays” chokes @ R .014. L. .022. Min walls .037. Weighs in right at 7 lbs. even. These are seldom seen, much less with all of these features. Hard to find a classier, well made Hammer gun than this Francotte built during their hey-day.

Beautiful shotgun, bargain price: 12g boxlock Gastinne Renette …

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun
12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

I love the American guns, but I hate the prices you have to pay for good ones. On most Parkers, Foxes, L.C. Smiths — especially the higher grades — you’re paying more for a name and its sentimental connections than you are for true quality.

But when you buy Belgian and French doubles, different dynamics come into play. You can pay relatively little money and get a gun that’s extremely well made. That’s the case with this Gastinne Renette. It’s a fantastic double, very high quality, and it looks like it’s in incredible original condition.

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun
12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

Gastinne Renette is one of Europe’s most famous gunmakers. They started building guns in the early-to-mid 1800s, and their clients included all sorts of aristocrats and noble types, including Napoleon III. I think they still had a retail shop in Paris up into the 1970s.

This Gastinne is an Anson & Deeley pattern boxlock with ejectors. It looks like it was built in Belgium, probably before WW2, and then retailed in Paris by the “maker”. This was a pretty common practice for a lot of the Parisian gunmakers, and for a lot of the “makers” throughout Europe.

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun: A 12 ga shotgun chambered for 2-1/2″ shells. A very classic looking European shotgun with a straight grip stock. Very thin in the wrist area. Very tight engraving on the frame. Heavy deep relief engraved bolsters. The frame has most case color remaining. Typical of European style, the inset panel is in blue as is the trigger guard. Extensive high quality engraving with the classical long pointed lower tang. Bbl blue very nice also. Wood is good overall cond with typical hunting mars and dings. The buttplate on this is not separate but instead sculpted into the stock. Letters in gold are “J L F” towards the heal of the stock. A fine looking shotgun that would make a dandy hunting gun. Price: $ 2,100

Auction alert: a great little 20g H. Mahillon boxlock SxS …

H. Mahillon, Gunmaker
H. Mahillon, Gunmaker

The Anson & Deeley boxlock is one of the most successful shotgun actions of all time. Invented in 1875 by Westley Richards, the design has been the basis for millions of shotguns, including the one you see here.

H. Mahillon was a Belgian maker with a shop is Brussels. They “made” a wide range of guns: From bolt rifles to best-quality sidelock pigeon guns. I say “made” because I’m not sure if the company built its own guns or had them made in the trade by other craftsmen. Regardless of who actually did the making, every Mahillon I’ve seen has been very well built.

I’m sure the one you see here is, too. If you’re looking for a great little bird gun at a fantastic price, this is it. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends tomorrow, 9/11/2015, @ 4:30:26 PM ET.

H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun
H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun

H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun: Up for bid is a lovely looking, lightly used H Mahillon SxS side plated boxlock ejectorgun shotgun chambered in 20 gauge. Barrels are 26 3/4″ with excellent, bright strong bores with a single bead at the muzzle and matted rib. Metal surfaces are blued and coin finished. I believe the barrels have been professionally reblued and currently retain about 95% of this finish with some scattered marks, scratches and small dings. Receiver is coin finished and it and the lever, sideplated boxlocks, triggerguard, tangs, and screw heads show tasteful engraving; please see the multiple closeup photos. Straight grip English style stock and splinter forend are nicely checkered. Shotgun features a checkered wooden butt and side clips where the receiver and breech end of the barrels meet. LOP is 12 3/4″ and 13 3/4″ with drops at comb and heel of 1 1/2″ and 2 3/16″ respectively. Shotgun weighs in at 5 lb 12 oz. European swivels are at the stock and bottom rib of the barrels. Matching serial numbers.

W.W. Greener, G 60 Royal, Boxlock Model, Self-Opener, Ejector, 12 gauge, 30”  2 ¾” 99%This is the famous Facile Princeps action, designed in 1998, and touted as, pound for pound, the strongest action ever produced.  This Royal was built in 1914. Its condition is 100% original and most likely only taken out for a shoot just a couple of times, stored all these years in some fine gun rack as can be seen by its nearly mint condition. The Royal model came in both sidelock and best boxlock versions, and is described as a Best Self-acting or Unique ejector with customer-ordered engraving which could be ordered with fine scroll or deeply carved relief or game scenes (depending on customer choice), with a gold crown on the top lever.  For pairs, the gold crown was replaced with gold numbers, 1 and 2, as noted in Graham Greener’s book, The Greener Story, page 110.  This specimen is a #2 of a pair, serial number 64144, and you can see that its owner chose elegant game scenes of dogs, birds, and a rabbit surrounded by extremely fine scroll work.  True to all Royal models, the fences are arcaded and the strength of the Facile Princeps action is enhanced by its bolstered receiver. All Royals were fitted with the best wood available. Barrels are original with mirror bores.  Right bore measures .732” with .040 choke (Full) and left bore is .733” with .040 choke (Full).  Proved for 1 ¼ oz. Nitro. The automatic ejectors are well-timed, manual safety and double triggers. Price: $9,750.

The case color on the top of the receiver and tang is quite strong, while the bottom of the receiver the case color is fading some and yet there is lots of remaining color. The bores are very bright and shiny. The wood has quite a few very small superficial scratches, typically found on guns that have been hunted with but not abused. There are a couple of small dings as well. The oil finish is getting dry and could use a bit of freshening up. The leather on the recoil pad is raw in places and can use a good going over with some leather preservative/conditioner.  Price:  $3999.99
