This piece remains in almost new condition with a few stock handling marks. It appears to have been fired very little if at all. Lever remains well right of center. Barrels ring with a pure chime. A lot of people think you have spend thousands of dollars to get decent SxS shotgun. While you certainly can do that, you can also spend a lot less. Just take a look at this Bernardelli Gamecock. It’s just $800 and an absolute steal.

I think twelve-gauge game guns like this are the most versatile shotguns you can guy. You can load them up to take pheasants or down to hunt grouse or quail. Typically, they run around 6.5lbs — so not too heavy to carry all day and not too light to shoot well or soak up recoil.

This one is on an Anson &  Deeley action, so you know it’s tough and reliable. I’m pretty sure it has ejectors, too. Overall, it look like a real nice gun at an insanely low price.

Bernardelli Gamecock 12g SxS 28″ Straight Grip: DT, SS, SF, 12 gauge. This shotgun seems to have spent its life in a closet. Other than normal handling wear throughout its life, she is immaculate. All numbers match, checkering, blueing, bores are gorgeous. She still opens and closes like new. I had Mike Orlen hone the chokes to IC and Mod. Mike did his normal mirror finish and perfect regulation. Documentation included. Serial # is 97596. Excellent birdgun to last a lifetime and gorgeous, original case coloring. Price: $800

Good Gun Alert: V. Bernardelli 20g Gamecock Premier…

V Bernardelli 20GA Gamecock Premier
V Bernardelli 20GA Gamecock Premier

Twenty-gauge side-by-sides are hard to beat as upland guns. Lightweight, and with the capacity to throw all the lead you’ll need for grouse and woodcock, it’s easy to understand why they’re the go-to shotguns for so many hunters.

This 20 gauge V. Bernardelli Gamecock Premier on Gunsinternational.com is nearly new, and at $1895 it’s not a bad deal. With chrome lined bbls, 3″ chambers, and modern steel throughout, it’s built to take just anything you throw it’s way. Vincenzo Bernardelli, of Brescia Italy, made guns from 1721 to 1997.  A number of companies imported them into the US. This little 20 was brought in by Sloan’s Sporting Good of Ridgefield, CT.

BTW: don’t be fooled by the sideplates on this shotgun. It’s a boxlock, not a sidelock.

Seller’s description: MINT condition 99% AS-NEW 27″ IC/IM 3″ chambers Ejector gun 14 1/8″ LOP to the factory buttplate. Test fired only with very nice wood and case coloring. Auto safety, articulating front trigger, chrome lined bores. All original, no box or manual.

Sidelock or boxlock? See if you can tell…

Side-by-side, double barrel shotguns are usually easy to tell apart:

You have boxlocks….

Anson & Deeley Boxlock Shotgun

And you have sidelocks…

But sometimes it’s not so easy, like with this Bernardelli:

Bernardelli shotgun

It sure looks like a sidelock, right? It has a sideplate, there are pins in the sideplate, a tumbler axis for the hammer (tumbler). But those sideplates are very misleading. This Bernardelli is actually a boxlock. And in this pictures you can see the sign that gives it away:

See the screw to the right of the barrel lump (the square, blued piece  in the floor of the action)? That screw holds a plate in place. That plate comes off so you can access the gun’s locks. The locks are are mounted on the action, not the sideplate, and the plate gives this Bernardelli’s true status away.

The sideplates are ornamental and designed to make this double look like an expensive sidelock, while the gun is really a boxlock, sold at a more affordable price.
