The finest Parker Bros. AH 10ga extant! Near mint all original lightweight gun made on a #2 Frame with orig 30″ barrels – appears test fired only

The finest Parker Bros. AH 10ga extant! Near mint all original lightweight gun made on a #2 Frame with orig 30″ barrels – appears test fired only:  One of just 14 made in this configuration – this rare early gun made on a #2 frame (very rare in 10ga) with 30″ Finest Damascus barrels.  This gun, made in 1890, was the highest grade gun made at the time and was made with original splinter forend, double triggers, extractors, and beautifully engraved skeleton buttplate.  This gun is absolutely 100% full coverage engraved, most certainly by W.H. Gough, and perhaps a detailed inspection will unveil his occasionally found and very elusive signature.  The gun is engraved with no less than 3 dogs on the bottom of the frame and 4 birds in a scene on the trigger plate, two more towards forend, two dogs on trigger guard bow with full scroll engraving, double dogs on right side with serpentine “PARKER BROS.” surrounded by full scroll, dog scenes on each of the breech balls, and double dogs on left, again with serpentine makers name surrounded by full scroll engraving.  The gun has its original engraved and blued skeleton buttplate.  Stocked with incredible straight grained European Walnut stocks which are beautifully checkered as seen in the photos.  All stampings are factory correct and original in every respect. This gun remains in spectacular original condition- nearly unheard of for one of these early guns.  The gun retains more than 95% bold vivid original case color throughout.  Stocks are excellent and sound with virtually all of their original hand rubbed finish with only minor handling marks throughout.  Trigger guard retains more than 80% original blue.  The buttplate retains more than 60% of its original high luster blue.  The breechface shows almost no signs of a shell ring from firing.  The barrels retain about 95% of their dark bold original pattern with only minor spotting towards the right breech as seen in the photos.  Bores are brilliant and shiny and the mechanics are crisp.  This gun matches it’s PGCA letter as seen in the photos. This exceptional “Best in Class” Parker is priced at $47,500 and can be shipped directly to your door as an antique.  If you desire the very best – look no further – this is it.  This gun is as fresh as a spring daisy having never been offered for sale publicly.

Good gun alert: 12g Army & Navy boxlock ejector …

Army & Navy CSL ~ BLE ~ 12 Ga

I’ve been looking at this double for a while, and I can’t figure out why its price is so low.

Army & Navy CSL ~ BLE ~ 12 Ga
Army & Navy CSL ~ BLE ~ 12 Ga

Not only is a Birmingham-built SxS that uses one of the most reliable actions of all time (the Anson & Deeley boxlock), but it also appears to be in excellent original condition. Does it have any faults? Maybe its weight. It’s not light, but it weighs as much as a lot of 16g Parkers (and some 20g Parkers).

The Army & Navy Stores were a cooperative that served British military officers throughout the old British Empire. They were not gunmakers. Instead, they had guns built for them by tradesman in Birmingham and London.

Here’s a great looking double that probably won’t be on the market long. To me, this gun looks like it was made in the 1920s or 1930s. That’s was when Germany was building some of the finest doubles on the planet.

Heym was one of Germany’s top makers, and their doubles were beautifully made, well balanced, and — as you can see — great looking.

Like what you see? Pounce on it. I doubt it will be around long.

Midland Gun Co ~ 12 Ga. ~ SxS ~ Boxlock Ejector Shotgun
Midland Gun Co ~ 12 Ga. ~ SxS ~ Boxlock Ejector Shotgun

Here’s a double that just may be a fantastic deal.

The Midland Gun Co. was one of the many gunmakers who thrived in the UK in the late 19th and early 20th century. They were known for making sound shotguns at affordable prices. And that is just what the one you see here looks like.

From what I can tell from the lousy pics, it looks pretty original. The only thing that worries me is the mention of it being for “2 3/4″ shells only”. Judging by this gun’s weight, I would say it was nitro proofed for 2 1/2″ shells. So before you buy it, you should check that out. Also, be sure to get a 3-day inspection period on it and have a qualified gunsmith check it before closing the deal.

‘Friggin WOW. An incredible 28g Parker BHE side by side…

Parker Bros. BHE, 28ga, original 26" Acme Steel barrels. Double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety. 1916. 1 of 4 made. Here’s a double you don’t see every day–and may never see again.

It’s a 28 gauge Parker BHE built in 1916. When it was made, Quality B.H. guns were the 4th down in the company’s lineup, below the A. No. 1 Special, the A.A.H., and the A.H. (the first Invincible was completed in 1923).

Parker only made 1,034 B.H. grade guns. That’s not many, especially for a company that built 247,000+ doubles in all. Most of those B.H. grades were 12s. As it says below, only four were 28 gauges.

It has 2-7/8″ original chambers with excellent bright shiny bores, measuring .563 right and .557 left. Full length matted top rib with proper original Acme barrel legend.  The gun has a capped pistol grip, inlaid with a gold cap and a large “H” engraved on the cap. Original skeleton buttplate with traces of original blue remaining. Stock dimensions in the factory letter are LOP of 14-1/4″ with drop-at-comb of 1-3/4″ and drop-at-heel of 3-1/8″.  The gun has these exact specifications today. Weight is 5lbs 7oz – exactly as found in the PGCA letter.  Barrel blue is excellent and all original and appears to be in the 75% range. Price: $59,500

Parker AHE 12ga SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, ½ Frame Factory Two Barrel Set 26” and 28” Single Selective Trigger

Both sets of barrels are 90% or better.  Both sets of barrels lock up tight and on the face.  There is no corrosion either inside or outside either set of barrels.  There are no dents or dings on either set of barrels.  Ejectors for both sets of barrels work properly and are in time.
The forearm wood shows little to no use.  All checkering on both forearms is in very fine condition.  There are no issues with either forearm.

The Stock checkering is in very fine condition showing little use.  The stock was cut and subsequently lengthened with the installation of 3/4″ total in spacers.  The Hawkins Pad is period correct.  The Parker letter does not indicate the stock treatment.  There are a few handling marks on both sides of the stock.

The action has 90% or better case colors.  There are Pheasant on the right and Quail on the left.  The bottom is engraved with two Setters and a fence row.  All screws are in fine condition and in time. The gold grip cap is in place and has initials engraved in it as well as a finely engraved border.

This is a fine condition Late Remington Parker AHE. This is one of the last three AHE’s manufactured according to the Parker Story.  According to the Parker Story there were only 4 total 12 gauge AHE’s manufactured with 26” Fluid Steel Barrels.  There were only 18 total 12 gauge AHE’s manufactured with 28” Fluid Steel Barrels.  This is also on a desirable and scarce Parker ½ Frame action.  This combination makes this Parker extremely rare and possibly the only one manufactured.  With the exception of the stock modifications listed above the firearm shows little use.  The firearm matches the Parker Letter.  This is a no excuses, no speculation, verified factory two barrel, high grade, 1/2 Frame firearm that can easily take its place as the centerpiece of a collection. Both barrel sets are stamped ½ and all measurements on the action confirm this is a ½ frame 12ga. Price: $55,000

Good gun alert: 12g Charles Hellis boxlock SxS…

CHARLES HELLIS 12GA Boxlock Ejector Side-by-Side
CHARLES HELLIS 12GA Boxlock Ejector Side-by-Side

Here’s a real nice boxlock ejector that just popped up on the market. It’s a Charles Hellis with awesome damascus barrels, and if I didn’t already have enough doubles, I would be on the phone to the seller trying work out a deal for it.

Charles Hellis, gunmakers, was founded by its namesake in 1884, and by the 20th century it was another of London’s prosperous gunmakers. Hellis made many different grades and types of guns, from modestly-priced boxlocks to Best-quality sidelocks. The company also specialized in lightweight boxlocks and sidelocks tagged “The Featherweight” and usually engraved with images of feathers on the actions or lockplates. The inlayed side panels on this Hellis boxlock are another of the company’s signature styles.

Gunmaker Charles Hellis outside his shop on Edgware Road, London
Gunmaker Charles Hellis outside his shop on Edgware Road, London

Something to note: Check out the proof marks on this gun. The barrels were originally proofed at two different bore sizes: 13 and 13/1 (.710″ & .719″) and the reproofed at .719″ and .729″ (13/1 & 12). While it’s unusual to see a set of barrels with two different bore sizes at proofing, it’s not unheard or wrong in anyway. What’s important is that both tubes are in proof with good wall thicknesses (which is the case with this SxS).

Auction alert: a great little 20g H. Mahillon boxlock SxS …

H. Mahillon, Gunmaker
H. Mahillon, Gunmaker

The Anson & Deeley boxlock is one of the most successful shotgun actions of all time. Invented in 1875 by Westley Richards, the design has been the basis for millions of shotguns, including the one you see here.

H. Mahillon was a Belgian maker with a shop is Brussels. They “made” a wide range of guns: From bolt rifles to best-quality sidelock pigeon guns. I say “made” because I’m not sure if the company built its own guns or had them made in the trade by other craftsmen. Regardless of who actually did the making, every Mahillon I’ve seen has been very well built.

I’m sure the one you see here is, too. If you’re looking for a great little bird gun at a fantastic price, this is it. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends tomorrow, 9/11/2015, @ 4:30:26 PM ET.

H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun

H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun: Up for bid is a lovely looking, lightly used H Mahillon SxS side plated boxlock ejectorgun shotgun chambered in 20 gauge. Barrels are 26 3/4″ with excellent, bright strong bores with a single bead at the muzzle and matted rib. Metal surfaces are blued and coin finished. I believe the barrels have been professionally reblued and currently retain about 95% of this finish with some scattered marks, scratches and small dings. Receiver is coin finished and it and the lever, sideplated boxlocks, triggerguard, tangs, and screw heads show tasteful engraving; please see the multiple closeup photos. Straight grip English style stock and splinter forend are nicely checkered. Shotgun features a checkered wooden butt and side clips where the receiver and breech end of the barrels meet. LOP is 12 3/4″ and 13 3/4″ with drops at comb and heel of 1 1/2″ and 2 3/16″ respectively. Shotgun weighs in at 5 lb 12 oz. European swivels are at the stock and bottom rib of the barrels. Matching serial numbers.

Good gun alert: a 12g William Ford Boxlock Ejector…

12 gauge William Ford - BLE - Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun
12 gauge William Ford – BLE – Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun

Birmingham, England, used to be one of the world’s largest gunmaking towns. Thousands of people used to be employed by the trade there, and all kinds of makers had shops or factories in and around the city. William Ford was one of these makers.

William Ford rose to prominence in the late 1870s as a barrel maker, and by the 1880s he had his own shop/factory in Birmingham. I’m not sure when the side-by-side you see here was built, but judging by the fluid-steel bbls I’d say it was made in the early 20th century. From what I can see, this double looks like a good deals  – if the gun is in proof and the bbl walls are sound (I like to see .o25″+ as a minimum in each tube). Be sure you find out before you close the deal.

Simson 12 gauge BLE SxS

Here’s one of the best deals on a doubles that I’ve seen in a while. This German side-by-side looks like it’s in great original condition. Unless it has a wart I can’t see (thin walls, oversized bores, pitting in the tubes), it’s a steal.

It’s made with an Anson & Deeley-style action with a Greener crossbolt – one of the best actions ever created – and it features ejectors, original 2 3/4″ chambers, and chokes that can be opened to right where you want them. What more could you want?

Is 2 1/2″ not enough for you? A nice 12g Powell heavy proofer…

William Powell & Son SxS Boxlock Ejector 12 Ga. Shotgun
William Powell & Son SxS Boxlock Ejector 12 Ga. Shotgun

The British are famous for their game guns: 12 gauge side-by-sides with 28″ or 30″ barrels, 2 1/2″ chambers, a straight stock, and doubles triggers. Most of these doubles weigh in at around 6 3/4lbs, and they’re ideal for taking everything up to pheasants out to about 40 yards.

Of course, the Brits also made heavy twelves for waterfowling and pigeon shooting. The William Powell double you see here is one of them, and from what I can see, it looks like it’s a good deal. With original 2 3/4″ chambers, it should be proofed for 1 1/4 oz. loads – more than enough lead for clays shooting – and with it’s high stock and should fit most shooters pretty well.

William Powell & Son SxS Boxlock Ejector 12 Ga. Shotgun: Price: $ 2,849.99

This fine Birmingham double found its way to America by a rather circuitous route through Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  The left barrel is marked with the maker’s name and Carr’s Lane, Birmingham address and the right is marked, “Made for Donald Mackintosh, Melbourne”.  Research indicates that Donald Mackintosh, Pty. Ltd. was a gunsmith and sporting goods store located on Latrobe Street in Melbourne and engaged in the importation of fine firearms from all over the world.  An ad from the 1950’s announced the recent arrival of W. Powell and G. & S. Holloway hammerless SxS guns made to Mackintosh’s specifications.  This would explain the pistol grip stock found on this shotgun as opposed to the classic English straight stock more frequently encountered on guns of this type.  In any event, it is an excellent example of one of Birminham’s finer gunmakers with handsome engraving and barrels that ring clear and true.  The lockup is as tight as the day it left England.

Real nice 16g & 20g Webley & Scott double barrel shotguns…

Webley & Scott Model 700 20 bore 28" barrels Made in England
Webley & Scott Model 700 20 bore 28″ barrels Made in England

I’ve written this before, but if  Webley & Scott is the Ford of British gunmaker, the Model 700 is their F150 pickup. Introduced in the 1950’s, the rugged and reliable M700 was the double of choice for thousands of shooters in the UK and Europe.

But almost all those Webleys were 12 gauges. The Brits have never loved the smaller bores, and their gunmakers have never made 16s & 20s in great numbers. That’s one of the things that makes the side-by-sides you see here special. The other thing that makes them unique is their condition. Both of these SxSs look new – pretty impressive when you consider they’re at least 40 years old.
