UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side
UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side

UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side: Hello, I have for sale a musuem quality fox 20 gauge A-grade that I acquired several years ago.  I have the factory order card for this gun and it is in the same condition as it left the factory.  This gun is unfired and is as MINT an example as you will find.  It would be impossible to upgrade this gun in any way.  All of the factory finishes are 100%.  This gun has been so well cared for that there is no rust, pitting, cracks, wear….nothing.  The factory wood finish is superb as is the checkering and the engraving/case colors are flawless and sharp.  This gun has the early snap-on forend and second generation “gough” style engraving.  Specs are as follows.  28″ barrels, double triggers, extractors, choked cyl/mod (as per factory card), 2.5″ chambers, mirror bores and 100% bluing throughout.  This gun has drops of about 1 9/16 and 2 7/8 and the LOP is the factory standard 14 1/8″ to 14 1/4″.  This gun has the factory buttplate and screws as well…all still mint.  Please, no low-ball offers.  Serious inquiries only.  I can provide additional pictures as needed for serious buyers. PS:  this is only the second year for 20 gauge foxes and a very early example with the gough engraving…quite a rare find here. Price: $8,750*

Fine and lightweight Francotte Model 20E 20ga Game Gun - with full provenance from G&H
Fine and lightweight Francotte Model 20E 20ga Game Gun – with full provenance from G&H

Fine and lightweight Francotte Model 20E 20ga Game Gun – with full provenance from G&H: Beautiful little lightweight side plated boxlock 20ga.  Made with 26″ fluid steel barrels, checkered splinter forend with Deeley push button release, double triggers, auto ejectors, auto safety.  The side plates boxlock action is beautifully scroll engraved with Greener Crossbolt and barrels with perfectly fitted sideclips.  The pistol grip buttstock has fine figure and fiddleback and terminates with its original lined horn buttplate.  Housed in a beautiful original A&F case which is a toe under leather case. I’ve long felt that these Francotte guns are an exceptional value in today’s market – for the quality, it’s impossible to find a better hand built more durable gun.  And this one in 20ga! Overall the gun remains in pleasing original condition with more than 90% original barrel blue. Side plates and action retain about 1/2 of their original color with the balance a pleasing toned gray.  Stocks are sound and retain about 90% original finish with only minor handling marks. Buttplate is very good as seen in the photos. Case is fine with minor rubs. Included with the gun are several pages of fascinating research from Griffin and Howe researcher Bob Beach on the history of this gun as sold by Abercrombie and Fitch. Price: $6,795*

Connecticut Shotgun RBL 16ga. – 29”, AS NEW, “RESERVE” VINTAGE FIREARMS INC: Serial Number: RBL004829. General Specs: Connecticut Shotgun, 2015±, 16 Ga, Weight 6lbs 12oz, Chokes LM/M, LOP 14 3/4″, DAH 2 1/2″, DAC 1 1/2″.  Many of you that enjoy shooting with the side by side shotgun are familiar with Tony Galazan’s well received RBL series of round bodied guns.  The gun presented here is an as new RBL RESERVE series from Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Co.  The RBL is a robust gun with excellent mechanics and a very appealing look with its bone and charcoal case colored receiver, gold plated triggers, and nicely figured walnut stock.  This gun shipped with 29” barrels that retain 100% of their fine rust blue, perfect bores, choked LM/M.  The metal overall retains 99.9% of the factory finishes, with the only wear of any kind at the safety on the top tang.  The wood has a very nice figure and retains all of its original finish and perfect checkering.  The gun balances dead on the hinge pin and has a very solid feel and comes to shoulder the way a fine side x side is supposed to.  Galazan has a solid performer with his RBL.  We have priced this gun to sell quickly, as I do not believe it has ever been in the field or used much at all.  There is only the faintest hint of a primer ring on the standing breech indicating very little shooting.  The RBL Reserve is a solid investment and will do you well on the sporting clays course or in the field. Price: $3,550

A confession: the 20g C.S.M.C. Revelation OU…

20g C.S.M.C. Revelation OU Shotgun. Pic from CSMC.
20g C.S.M.C. Revelation OU Shotgun. Pic from CSMC.

I’m not a huge fan of new guns. For some reason, few of them give me that “gotta have it” feeling. But for some reason, I do have soft spot for the CSMC 20 gauge Revelation OU.

I saw this double for the first time at the 2018 Safari Club Show and was impressed. Even though it’s has a very no-thrills look, its trim, color-case hardened action makes it stands out. And with a straight grip and upgraded deluxe walnut, it’s a handsome gun over-under.

But was is it good?

Shooting Sportsman’s Bruce Buck reviewed it and had this to say about it:

Connecticut Shotgun has done a heck of a job with the Revelation. It is nicely made, mechanically correct, flat-out gorgeous and priced very well.”

So I guess the answer is yes. Faults? Maybe its weight. But with 3″ chambers, this OU needs to be hefty to tame those nasty magnum loads

CSMC’s Inverness O/U: More of the story…

The Inverness is the newest over-and-under being made by Connecticut Shotgun -one of the finest American gunmakers of all time. Since this double’s introduction in January, the Inverness has raised a lot questions. You can read some of them on this string over at the Shooting Sportsman’s board.

I wrote an article for the latest issue of Sporting Shot (pages 8-9) to clear up some of this confusion. The first draft of my piece went way back into the gun’s early history, but to streamline the article a lot of this back story was cut out. So here’s my first draft of the story so you can learn more about the origins of the Inverness:

Connecticut Shotgun's Inverness O/U shotgun
Connecticut Shotgun's Inverness O/U shotgun

Over the last couple months, shooters have been puzzled by a new double on the market. At the beginning of the year, the Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company (CMSC) introduced the Inverness Round Body Over/Under shotgun. But what started out as excitement generated for this great looking shotgun turned into confusion for people around the country.

The trouble began with an email. On January 16, 2012, Anthony Galazan, President of the Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company, sent out a message that greeted readers with “This Is An Advanced Announcement To All Our Loyal Customers!!” It went on to say “This is our most ambitious and exciting offer to date.”

The offer was for CSMC’s new Inverness Round Body Over/Under. Pictures showed a sleek, color-case hardened double with a single trigger, rose-and-scroll engraving, and a true Prince of Wales grip. At first glance, the gun looked like a McKay Brown, an $80,000 O/U. But the Inverness could be ordered for as little as $2,995—IF you ordered one right away.

The confusion came from the same source – CSMC –but two years earlier. In February 2010, B. Rizzini USA (a division of CSMC at the time) had released a round body over/under shotgun. The gun’s name? the Inverness. When CSMC’s January 2012 email went out, CSMC was still selling this B. Rizzini USA gun. One name, two guns, one company. Not good.

To sort this all out, let’s step all the way back to 1966. That’s when B. Rizzini started making O/Us in Italy. By 1990, these shotguns were being brought into the United States. In 2008 CSMC launched B. Rizzini USA and became the U.S. importers and distributors for B. Rizzini’s shotguns and rifles. The plan was for CSMC to sell some guns directly to customers while wholesaling others to dealers throughout the country.

In 2010, B. Rizzini USA introduced the Inverness round body over/unders. This gun was an existing B. Rizzini model, badged with a name owned by CSMC. The “Inverness” name was simply a way for CSMC to offer its own line of B. Rizzinis.

Now let’s jump forward a few years. CSMC and B. Rizzini end their joint venture; B. Rizzini USA comes to an end. CSMC decides to sell off the remaining Inverness-badged B. Rizzinis they have in stock. At the same time, they started developing a new O/U that they planned to make in their New Britain, CT, factory. This is when the new Inverness is born.

Like a lot of Italian O/Us, B. Rizzinis are made on a shallow, coil spring, triggerplate-style action with coil spring ejectors. Over the last 40+ years, this design has been tweaked and improved to the point where CSMC felt it was an excellent platform for the new gun they wanted to build: a reliable over/under that gave shooters the look and feel of a best-quality double at an affordable price.

“We’ve always been about giving folks good guns at affordable prices,” says Lou Frutuoso, CSMC’s Sales and Market Manager, “and when we wanted to make a new O/U, we looked at the Italian’s O/U-style action and realized it could be a great starting point for us.”

Drawing on the manufacturing skills they’ve refined from making RBLs and A-10s, CSMC created gave their new Inverness’s a list of upgraded features: A more sculpted, rounder action, a true Prince of Wales stock, bone-and-charcoal color case hardening, an extended top tang strap, steel-shot ready barrels, and a better-fitting, more durable forend. They also gave the shotgun a file-cut rib and fine rose-and-scroll engraving, along with more hand fitting and finer overall tolerances. After a prototype was built and tweaked, CSMC send out the January 16, 2012 email announcing their new gun.

Today the new CSMC Inverness is available in a single-triggered 20 gauge with either 28” or 30” barrels. For an additional charge, customers can add a leather covered pad, an extended trigger guard, and grades of walnut for the stock. Right now, delivery times for these guns are set for late 2012 and early 2013.

Firsts are something that the Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company is used. Their best-quality A.Galazan shotguns are the first world-class doubles to be made in the America and the A-10s are the first mass-produced sidelock Over/Unders ever made in this country. With the introduction of their new Inverness line, CSMC has achieved another first. This time, it’s the first affordable, high-quality O/U that 100% made in the USA.

Good gun alert: Scott Imperial Premier…

Connecticut Shotgun just listed this rare British double barrel shotgun. W & C Scott Imperial Premier Double Barrel, Side by Side shotgun, 12 gaugeIt’s a W. & C. Scott Imperial Premier sidelock in 12 gauge. Connecticut Shotgun’s full listing reads:

“WC Scott Premier Imperial grade, 12ga, 30”, F/F, the very rarest WC Scott the holy grail of the line Whitworth barrels, double trigger, auto ejectors, pistol grip, leather face pad, fleur de lis checkered massively miniature highly detailed chiseled engraving of oak leaves water fowl woodcock, incredible. Escutcheon dated 1915, the very rarest highest grade in the height of the era, English full sidelock, extremely rare. 8lbs. 14 3/8” x 1 3/8” x 2”.”

W & C Scott Imperial Premier Double Barrel, Side by Side shotgun, 12 gaugeW. & C. Scott introduced the Imperial Premier in about 1893 and they made them until 1932. Imperial Premiers were Scott’s very best quality shotguns, one step up from their standard best-grade: the Premier. In 1928 and Imperial Premier cost $1200, a Holland & Holland Modele de Luxe $1150. At the same time, a new Ford Model A Coupe went for $495 and the average American home cost $2100.

W & C Scott Imperial Premier Double Barrel, Side by Side shotgun, 12 gauge

The Imperial Premier was a standard bar-action sidelock built on a Rogers-patent action. This action was patented in 1881 and it cocked when the bbls dropped, much like an Anson & Deeley or H&H Royal action, and Scott used it on all their sidelock shotguns up until 1939.

Quality wise, the guns I’ve seen have had the superb metal-to-metal and metal-to-wood fit that you would expect. The engraving has all been deep relief, and beautifully done, the wood beautiful French walnut, and the checkering very ornate. I’ve never handled or fired one of these guns, but I’m sure they open and close as smoothly as an H&H Royal or a Boss, with perfectly timed ejectors and excellent trigger pulls.

I have no idea how many Imperial Premiers Scott made – probably fewer than 100. In the past 10 years I’ve seen four or five on the market and pics of about 10 in all. W. & C. Scott Imperial Premier side by side shotgunThis second Imperial Premier came up for auction at Cowan’s Auctions in 2007. It was made in about 1904, so almost 10 year before the gun above, and it’s a bit different: there’s more engraving on the barrels, the overall engraving pattern itself is different, and the bar of the action on this one is rounded. The action is missing the double bead and some of the sculpting the gun above has. You can see this better in this picture of the bottom of the action.

W. & C. Scott Imperial Premier side by side shotgun

Scott did this on some of their sidelocks, but I’ve never been able to figure out why.

If you know of any other Imperial Premiers, please drop me a note and tell me about them.

And contact me, too, if you have any comments on this post that you would like to share.
