This is it: the final day of our countdown to tomorrow’s Guyette & Deeter Fine Sporting Arms Auction.

Josh Lowensteiner is part of the team managing this sale. All this week, we’ve been looking at some of his favorite lots. Today we’ll see his final pick. There are links to his other favorites at the end of this post.

Lot 1: IMPORTANT INAUGURAL A. GALAZAN BOSS ACTION 20 BORE O/U SHOTGUN – SERIAL NUMBER 1: SN. 1. Certainly the John Browning of our generation, Antony Galazan has made more fine firearms in the last 35 years than any other American Gun Maker of this generation. His finest creations are those made under his own name, the “A. Galazan” best quality guns.

This gun, his first Boss Action Over/Under marks the start of his successful endeavor to make a best quality hand finished gun in America successfully in the 20th and 21st Century. No doubt successful and incredibly impressive, this gun made with 28” fluid steel barrels, 2-3/4” chambers, that have solid filed top rib. Bbls with single small brass front bead, otherwise unmarked. Finely point pattern checkered Boss style forend with diamond shaped engraved escutcheon and fine English scroll engraved Anson type push button release at muzzle end. Forend iron is blued with fine scroll engraving. Full sidelock casehardened Boss action engraved in rose and scroll pattern with 5 floral bouquets on each lock.

Locks engraved with makers name “A. Galazan” in riband at center, forward of the tumbler and fine scroll engraved throughout by famed engraver Thierry Duguet, and signed “Th. Duguet” just forward of the rolled edge trigger guard bow. Trigger guard bow engraved en-suite with SN “001” on tang. Mounted with a stunning piece of dark highly figured European Walnut with carved tear drops behind locks, and is checkered in point pattern through the wrist and terminates with blued fine English scroll engraved heel and toe plates with checkered center. Gun made with single trigger, auto ejectors, and non-auto safety. “SAFE” inlaid in gold in front of “T” shaped safety slide. Top lever is blued and scroll engraved. WEIGHT: 6lbs 13oz. Bore Diameter: .615(T) .615(B). Bore Restriction: .031(T) .032(B). DAC: 1-3/8”. DAH: 2-3/8”. LOP: 14-3/4”.

CONDITION – Extremely fine as lightly field used. Gun retains virtually all of its factory original finish on all wood and metal surfaces with only very minor marks from assembly and very limited gunning use. Mechanics are excellent. Bores are brilliant and shiny. Ejectors are in time and trigger functions well.

Ithaca 5E NID 12 Gauge Side-by-Side Shotgun: Ithaca NID 5E 12 Gauge manufactured in 1927 with 30″ F/F “Best Fluid Steel” vent rib ejector barrels with large ivory front bead and small ivory mid-bead. Bores are very good, bright and shiney, measuring .734 right and left. Choked .045[F] right and left. Chambers are 2 3/4″ NID receiver with cocking indicators and traces of color case hardening in protected areas. Typical 5E engraving with pheasant on the left, woodcock on the right, and an American Eagle with “Made in USA, Ithaca Gun Co., Ithaca N.Y.” on the floorplate all surrounded by foliate and scroll. Most likely engraved by Bill McGraw but unsigned. Single selective trigger. Toplever well to the right. Tight and on face. Beautiful pistol grip stock with excellent figure and a vacant stock oval. Fleur-de-lis and ribbon checkering pattern. LOP is 13 3/4″ over a mid-position single trigger. Ithaca sunburst pad which appears to be original. DAC – 1 1/2″ DAH – 2 1/2″ Neutral cast. Weighs in at 8lb 4oz. This piece appears to be all original and unmolested. Both buttstock and beaver tail forend are solid and without repairs. Barrel blue at 95%. Trigger guard blue at 80% Stock finish and checkering at 94%. This is one of only 155 Grade 5 guns produced and we can safely assume that not all of these have survived. A classic and rare piece from the golden era of American gunmaking. Price: $7,250.00

Beautiful and dynamic Browning BSL 12ga – a Fine Sidelock Browning and a perfect pheasant set up!: Beautiful Browning BSL 12ga made with 26″ barrels, splinter forend, double triggers auto safety and auto ejectors. U.S.A.”, the top of the left is marked “RBL LAUNCH EDITION 20ga. 2 3/4”, each chamber and the top-rear of the rib have a foliate scroll motif. The left barrel flat is marked “511”, the right “RBL / PROOF”. The water table is marked “RBL000511” and “MADE IN USA MODEL RBL / CONNECTICUT SHOTGUN MFG. / NEW BRITAIN, CONN.”, the top tang is marked “RBL000511”, the bottom of the trigger plate is marked “RBL” on banner. The receiver, trigger plate, guard, base of the forend iron, and lever have beautiful foliate scroll engraving with fine matting in the negative spaces.

Barrel Length: 28”, Solid-Rib

Choke: The barrels are threaded for RBL choke tubes with Improved Cylinder installed on both barrels. Also included are Full, Modified, and Improved Modified.

Sights / Optics: There is a brass bead at the front of the rib.

Weight: 6 lb., 2 oz.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered select black American walnut with a capped pistol grip, straight comb and serrated black hard rubber buttplate. There are some spots of dark discoloration on the pistol grip cap. There are a few marks on the top rear corners of the forend. The diamond on the bottom of the forend has some marks into the edges. The bottom of the forend has some wear on the rear edge with a tiny hairline crack on the right side, not even 1/8″. The buttstock has a few light compressions and a couple scuffs. There are a couple little tiny dings and a couple of hairline scratches, the most noticeable is on the left side by the heel. The checkering is sharp. The LOP measures 14 1/4″ and 13 1/4″ from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the pad, 14″ and 13″ to the back of the wood. The pate has some light wear. Drop at comb is approximately 1 1/2″, drop at heel 2 1/8″. The cast is about neutral. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue & French Gray

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion in the bores.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrels, forend iron and receiver have very light operational wear on the bearing surfaces, concealed when assembled. There are a few light marks on the barrels and rib. The barrel has some faint mottled thinning and discoloration at the front, most noticeable on the bottom of the right barrel. The bottom tang has some little spots of dark discoloration and fingerprinting. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly including the ejectors. The barrels lock up with no play to the receiver. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Awesome and beastly Parker DH 20ga 32″ – Dubray Gun with factory 2-7/8″ chambers: I have for sale an awesome and very early 20ga magnum DH Grade Parker. The gun was ordered in 1903 by Arthur DuBray and is Serial Number 119,763. It was ordered with factory original 32” Barrels on a “0” Frame. This is the earliest 20ga gun I have encountered with factory original 2-7/8″ chambers and the gun is an absolute beast. Made with double triggers, extractors, and splinter forend. The gun now has an older silvers type pad with 14 1/2” LOP. As best I can tell it has 0 cast and Drop at comb 1 5/8 “ and Drop at heel 2 5/8 “. These dimensions are fantastic! Here are the barrel measurements on the gun: Chokes R .019 L .027, Bore R .617” L .618” Barrel Wall Thickness (At thinnest point) R .044 L .041 Weight 7lbs. Overall, the gun remains in pleasing condition with more than 95% barrel blue, around 30-40% case color. Stocks have been expertly freshened up. The gun is mechanically superb, on face, and tight. These 32″ 20ga guns are highly coveted and this gun being a DuBray ordered gun with the letter, magnum chambers and straight stock/double trigger combo is absolutely a show stopper. Price: $16,500

THE LEFEVER ARMS COMPANY EXHIBITION 12 GAUGE: #20901, 30″ DAMASCUS BARRELS MOD AND FULL 2 1/2″ CHAMBERS, DOUBLE TRIGGER, EJECTORS, SPLINTER FOREARM, PISTOL GRIP, EXCELLENT CONDITION, HORN BUTT AND GRIP CAP, 7LBS 9 OZ, 2 1/4″ DAH, 1 1/2″ DAC, 14 1/2″ LOP. Price: $69,500

Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing (CSM) 16g Model 21 SxS: Flat side action has factory double triggers and automatic safety. The action, barrels, guard & tang and the forend iron have a very deep black high-polished finish with very tastefully inlaid gold vine and leaf borders with single bird game scenes of a flushing duck in cattails on the right side, a flushing woodcock in the alders on the left side and a rooster pheasant in the grass on the bottom of the action. The stock is nicely figured American walnut with a straight hand grip, what looks like a leather faced red Winchester pad and standard Model 21 beavertail forend with an ebony wedge in the tip. Two barrel set consists of one set of 28” barrels choked WS-1 and WS-2 and one set of 29” barrels that are choked Lt. Mod and Full. Each set of barrels has machine matted solid ribs with single orange beads, and damascened barrel flats and water tables. Gun is in excellent shape overall with some very small handling marks on one side, otherwise wood and metal is superb! In a leather CSM two barrel set flat case with Maker’s leather trade label and canvas cover with blank initial patch. This is a very attractive and tastefully adorned gun. Price: $20,000

August Francotte SxS Model 20 – 20 ga., 28″ barrels: Feature engine turned game rib, side clips, third fastener, 2-3/4″ chambers, choked improved cylinder and modified (.007/.014). Double triggers, auto safe. The sideplated action is engraved in a fine English scroll and retains 98% original case color hardening. The round pistol grip stock of nicely figured French walnut measures 1-3/8″ comb, 2″ heel, with a LOP of 14-3/4″ over a leather pad. Marked with the Abercrombie and Fitch import name on the barrels, this is a classic double for about 100 years and a staple of the A&F line. This is a fine example retaining nearly all of the original finish as seen in the photos. There is a slight abrasion on the right barrel and some handling marks from use on the stock. The gun remains tight as new and weighs 6 lbs., 2 oz. Classy little upland double! Price: $5,750

Merkel ~ 203E Sidelock OU ~ 12 Gauge: This is a fully engraved sidelock ejector over under shotgun with hand detachable sidelocks. The ejectors are strong and well-timed, the double trigger are crisp with the front trigger being articulated. The 27″ Bohler Steel barrels are like new and have fixed FULL chokes. The butt stock is nicely figured with good shooting dimensions and the 3 piece forearm that fits nicely in hand. 100% coverage bank note scroll engraving on the sidelocks along with cocking indicators. This is a great looking and feeling shotgun. 12 Gauge. Chambers: 3″ Over/Under with ejectors., Metal Condition: Excellent with a touch of thinning blue on the trigger guard. The coin finished receiver is excellent. Wood Condition: Very nice with a few small dings and dents. Bore Condition: Bright and shiny. Barrels: 27″ blue with a solid rib. The condition is not perfect, but it’s very nice. The blue is all there, but the case colors have faded on the bottom and a little on the sides. I call it conservatively 50-60%. Rizzini Artemis 410 Over Under Shotgun: This gun has 28″ vent rib barrels choked improved cylinder (.005″) and modified (.010″). Thie gun is in excellent original condition. It retains 90% of the original case colors, 99% of the original wood finish,and 99% of the barrel blue. The wood is nicely figured European walnut with a Prince of Wales grip and a 145/8″ LOP over the factory wood buttplate. The chambers are 3″ and the bores are mint. Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga: Consigned to Cole’s is this very nice Belgian Browning Superposed Super Light in 20 ga with 26-inch barrels. The shotgun bears serial # 223PW02990. The bores are excellent. The upper barrel is choked Mod (**) and the lower is choked IC (**-). This shotgun weighs in at 5lbs 14 oz, a true super lightweight. The shotgun has a long tang, straight grip. The LOP is 14 ¾” and terminates with a Decelerator recoil pad. The stock has various minor nicks and dings from days afield. The gun is nice and tight and there is no looseness to be found open or when in battery. The bluing is just starting to flake from the bottom of the receiver from carry. Some very minor loss of factory finish is observed along the tang as well. Again, this from honest use pursuing dove and quail. One of the best I have seen or found out here in a very, very long time. Price: $4650

David McKay Brown Trio of 16g Side by Side Game Guns: Consecutively numbered, true trio of 16g round action trigger plate self-opening Side by Side game guns by Scottish maker, David McKay Brown. Each gun is built on the classic Scottish trigger plate action with its rounded bar. Each gun features two triggers, auto-safeties, color case hardening and wonderfully executed small English scroll by renowned engraver Dave Tallett. Each gun features the Maker’s name inlayed in gold on the bottom the actions. Finally, each gun is appropriately numbered “1, 2, or 3” in gold and and the word “SAFE” is also inlayed in gold. All three guns feature 29” chopper lump barrels with 2 ¾” chambers and 2002 London proof marks. All three sets of barrels are bored and choked the same at: 3/8 (.015″) and 1/2 (.020″) with smooth concave game ribs. The guns are stocked in a lovely set of well matched stock blanks with straight hand grips and splinter forend. There is a 15″ LOP over checkered butts and the guns are cast off 1/8″. The guns weigh a lively 6 lbs. 2 oz. and are complete in the Maker’s three gun motor case. The guns show some signs of use, but are overall in excellent condition, tight on face, and the barrels and stocks free from any dents, bulges or cracks. Each gun is a superb example of the classic Scottish round action game gun. According to Donald Dallas’ book, David McKay Brown, Scotland’s Gun & Rifle Maker, The definitive history authorized by David McKay Brown, (2011 Quiller Press), the three guns were finished in 2003 and are the only trio of 16g Side by Side Game Guns shown in the ledgers when the book was published. VERY RARE AH GRADE PARKER 12 GAUGE SxS SHOTGUN: Gun features a 30 inch barrel with an unusual 2 Ivory beads on it. Choked improved cylinder and modified. AH stamp on the water table as well as a number 6. 175k serial range. Original straight grip stock measuring 14-5/8 inches to the end of the Josten pad. Excellent condition with most original varnish. Sharp checkering. It has a gold inlaid unused inscription plate in the stock. This Parker is in beautiful shape with 85-90% bright case colors on the frame. Bottom of the receiver retains just traces of case color. The trigger guard is nicely engraved with a dog and has traces of blue remaining. Bottom of the receiver has a beautifully done dog with a bird in it’s mouth and a running deer. Both sides of the receiver are game scene engraved. Quite delicately done. Gun has the correct splinter forearm as well automatic ejectors. Also has the correct barrel markings “Acme Steel” on top of the rib. Overall this just a great gun. This is the 3rd A grade I have bought this week. This one came from an estate out of Fargo North Dakota. It has been identified in the Parker gun identification and serialization book having all the mentioned features. Has never been on the market before. Gun weighs 7pounds 5 ounces. Price: $41,500

Gorgeous early CSMC Fox XE-grade 20ga two-barrel set with case: Made in 1995, this fantastic early CSMC XE Fox has it all – and remains in exceptionally nice original condition to boot. The gun is engraved in factory XE Grade pattern, signed by Leopold Schickl. Made originally with two sets of barrels and two forends – one in 27″ and one 26″, this would be the one gun any man would need for all seasons. The gun was made with straight grip, double triggers, and splinter forends with Schnabel tips. The gun is beautifully engraved with quail on left, woodcock on right, and standing Fox on the bottom all surrounded by well executed factory oak leaf pattern. Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga

Zoli & Rizzini Field Grade S/S 20 Gauge: Offered for sale is this classic Field Grade double trigger side-by-side shotgun manufactured by Zoli&Rizzini in Magno Italy and imported to the U.S. by Abercrombie & Fitch in the1960s. The overall condition of this gun is very good to excellent rating in the 90% range. It has magnificent case hardened scalloped coloring enhanced by intricate engraving patterns and a blue finish on the frame, boxlock, lever and breech areas. The hardwood checkered Wales type grip and forearm are distinct and show very little ware. The top lever and boxlock plate also show fine engraving patterns adding value to this gun. Lock up is tight and the trigger mechanics are crisp. Overall the bluing is very uniform on both barrels with the possible exception of some very small age spots on the right side barrel. The stock shows some limited handling marks on one side which is to be expected for a field grade gun of this age. Overall it was well cared for over the years and is a very collectible firearm. Savage Arms introduced these Savage Fox A Grades a few years ago, and what makes them odd is the fact that the only thing they have in common with a vintage Fox A Grade is the “Fox” name.

But that doesn’t mean the Savage Fox A Grade is a bad gun. In fact, I think it’s better than the real thing, and right now, the one you see here is an absolute steal.

The new Savage Fox A Grade is actually a CSMC RBL with different aesthetics. That’s a good thing because the RBL is a well built, it used the tried-and-true Anson & Deeley-style boxlock action, and features modern metals, modern stock dimensions, choke tubes, and comes with a case.

Savage Arms FOX Grade A 20 Gauge: The Savage Arms Fox A Grade is a side by side shotgun. This particular version is chambered in 20 gauge and features a hammer-less Anson Deeley-style box lock action along with Holland & Holland style extractors. The double triggers and case colored receiver add to the overall look. Undoubtedly the precision cut checkered American Black Walnut stock featuring an oil finished is something for the eye to behold. The Fox A Grade side by side is a work of art which belongs in a museum but can happily reside on your arm and in the field with you for years to come. A confession: the 20g C.S.M.C. Revelation OU…

I’m not a huge fan of new guns. For some reason, few of them give me that “gotta have it” feeling. But for some reason, I do have soft spot for the CSMC 20 gauge Revelation OU.

I saw this double for the first time at the 2018 Safari Club Show and was impressed. Even though it’s has a very no-thrills look, its trim, color-case hardened action makes it stands out. And with a straight grip and upgraded deluxe walnut, it’s a handsome gun over-under.

But was is it good?

Shooting Sportsman’s Bruce Buck reviewed it and had this to say about it:

Connecticut Shotgun has done a heck of a job with the Revelation. It is nicely made, mechanically correct, flat-out gorgeous and priced very well.”

So I guess the answer is yes. Faults? Maybe its weight. But with 3″ chambers, this OU needs to be hefty to tame those nasty magnum loads

The state of Connecticut may not be the first place you think of as “gun country.” But since the 19th century, it has been home to some of America’s most famous gunmakers, including Parker Bros, Winchester, and Colt. Thousands of rifles, pistols, and shotguns have been built in Connecticut, probably millions.

In the 1975s, a gunmaker called the Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company (CSMC) opened for business. CSMC started building Fox shotguns and Winchester M21s in the 1990s. Around 2006 or so they launched their RBL-line of side by sides, first in 12g and 20g. The 28gs followed a few years later, and ones like you see here cost around $7500+ new today.

CSMC RBL all options 28 ga., first-year edition serial number 002801. Awesome, full “Feather crotch” American walnut! This was the debut of the 28 ga. & SHOT Show display gun several years ago. I saw that wood and configuration and have to have it, so they reluctantly agreed to ship it to me after the show. Hard to find, configuration with 30” barrels, concave tapered game rib, double triggers, Self-opening feature, Beavertail fore end, capped “Prince of Wales” pistol grip, Full-length rolled-edge trigger guard, stunning XXX Fancy feather-crotch American walnut with classic, dull oil finish. Nice scroll engraving with dog and bird cameos finished off with authentic bone charcoal case colors. Excellent overall condition with only signs of wear being on the breech face and slight thinning of the gold on the triggers (suede gloves) – the rest is near mint with a couple small dings on the fore end just below the screw (pictured). Complete with case and accessories. These are the best value in mid-range SxS guns on the market and this one is a desirable and very hard to find configuration.
