See if you could handle Hemingway’s elephant gun…

THE IMMORTAL ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S WESTLEY RICHARDS BEST QUALITY HAND DETACHABLE SINGLE TRIGGER EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE W/ORIGINAL CASE.

Way back in the early 20th century, Ernest Hemingway was the man and, in a lot of ways, THE MAN.

A literary icon by 27 (wow, that makes me feel like a chump), Hemingway was famous for his to-the-point, English-Pointer lean sentences and simple dialogue.

He was also famous for he-man exploits like African safaris.

Hemingway went to Africa in 1933 and 1954. On his second trip, the .577 Nitro Express Westley Richards you see here and in the video above was the gun he carried.

*THE IMMORTAL ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S WESTLEY RICHARDS BEST QUALITY HAND DETACHABLE SINGLE TRIGGER EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE W/ORIGINAL CASE.

The .577 Nitro Express is one of the most bad-ass hunting rounds of all time. Hemingway’s rifle fired a 750 gr. bullet, and generated a crushing 7,010 ft⋅lbf. By comparison, a .30-06 Springfield shooting a 220-gr bullet generates a wimpy 2,981 ft⋅lbf.

Famous Africa hunter John “Pondoro” Taylor wrote that the .577 Nitro Express was “a magnificent killer – it literally crumbles up an elephant”. Unfortunately, it could have the same impact on the man shooting it.

Army & Navy – Webley & Scott – Deluxe 450 BPE – High Condition – All Original 1896 Rifle !

This rifle is chambered for .450 Black Powder Express (.450 314-inch BPE), one of the most popular rounds of the late 19th century. Many different types of rifles were chambered for .450 BPE and these guns were used for everything from deer stalking in Scotland to elephant hunting in Africa. The round was replaced by the more potent .450 Nitro Express in 1898 (BTW: go here to see how the .450NE compares to a .470NE).

Colonel Fosbery’s patent #7568 of June 20, 1885 was intended to make a gun capable of being fired either with shot, ball or conical bullet. Holland & Holland gave the rifled choke-bore its name, “Paradox”. Back in the day, Paradox meant “That which is contrary to received opinion; strange, but true”. H&H wanted 100-yard performance that duplicated the Express rifle at that time, and still have a gun that gave very good patterns. The Paradox will pattern from cylinder to improved cylinder chokes. H&H built a total of 1,463 Paradox guns. The last Paradox, by serial number only, was a 10 bore #15979 and finished October 10, 1930 at a cost of 166 pounds. The very last was a 12 bore #15972 and was finished in 1933. Price: $29,500

For sale: 20g Boss OU…the stuff of dreams.

I’ve never handled a holy relic. But I have handled a Boss OU.

The first time was in the summer of 1999. I was working at New England Arms, a gunshop Forbes FYI magazine said was “probably the finest gunshop in the world.” (It’s owner ended up in federal prison, but that’s another story).

Anyway, a 16g Boss OU came into the shop on a Tuesday. Even though it had problems, we sold it by Thursday. I think the price was $65,000. We mailed it out the following Monday, giving me fives days to admire it (I worked Mon-Sat). It went to some guy in Austin, TX, with “Dell” money.

12 gauge Boss O/U Double Barrel Pigeon Shotgun
A 12 gauge Boss O/U Double Barrel Pigeon Shotgun

Since then, I’ve handled Boss OUs in 12g, 16g, 20g, 28g, & .410. I’ve seen a 10g, and I know the whereabouts of a couple of 14gs. I’ve seen Boss OUs with rare, Rigby-style rising bites, and ones with the various action styles Boss used over the years for no apparent reason.

I’ve even handled one of the finest firearms Boss has ever built — and one of the finest sporting guns ever made — this unique round-action OU double rifle from 1929.

Boss & Co. Over & Under Double Rifle
Boss & Co. Over & Under Double Rifle

Boss & Co. introduced their revolutionary OU in 1909. The company is still around today and still building its legendary shotgun. I think the starting price is £115,000 or so.

BTW: If you have a Boss OU and would like to know more about it or sell it, drop me an email — Gregg@DogsandDoubles.com. I can help you out.

Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32" Bernard barrels:
Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32″ Bernard barrels:

Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32″ Bernard barrels: For your consideration is something truly astounding. This is one of 10 made in this configuration. The gun is a 12ga C Grade with 32″ Bernard barrels. It is SN 39432, having been made in 1884. According to the Parker Identification and Serialization book, this was one of three consecutive guns in a row in this exact configuration. The gun itself is in incredible original condition and retains more than 60% bright original case color. Stocks retain most of their original finish with some finish added for preservation. The barrels are stunning and retain nearly all of their bold original pattern. The gun retains its original skeleton buttplate with LOP of 14-1/4″. The gun weighs 8lbs 7oz having been made on a #2 frame and has drops of 1-15/16 DAC and 2-15/16 DAH. Bores are bright and shiny and mechanics are crisp. The gun balances and swings like a dream. Bores measure .754 (rt) and .752 (left) with .034 choke in the right and .032 in the left. If you have ever wanted a truly “world class” and heirloom quality Parker hammer gun, look no further. I don’t think there is a better C Grade 32″ Bernard barreled hammer gun than this one as I have never seen or heard of one better than this in this configuration. Price: $13,950

Whitworth’s single-shot rifles were prized by Confederate sharpshooters during the Civil War and were also used extensively in target shooting in the apex of the percussion rifle era. Parker Hale continues to market reproductions as to the Target rifle variants with the correct Hexagonal rifling. (I took a very large bull elk, quite cleanly, with one of these reproductions, before I owned this double!)  Far fewer Sporting rifles were produced by Whitworth, and, again, fewer still of the double rifle variety. These double’s barrels were produced from a single piece of bar stock which Whitworth bored. A very unusual method of production, but extremely effective when done right, and Whitworth was one of England’s most renowned machinists.  Hex bullets can be used of course, or, more commonly, people use .451 +/- conical bullets that simply bump up to hex shape upon firing.  These are very effective hunting rifles as the bullets have great sectional density when weighing 485-500 grains or so. This provides almost the perfect combination of bullet diameter and penetration.   Bullet molds are quite common in this configuration. Most users recommend a powder charge of approximately 90-95 grains of FF Black powder.  This example shows honest use, but was maintained properly, and is in excellent condition overall, as is it’s original case. Mechanically and functionally excellent, and very good as to appearance is the way I would grade this example.  Folding sights in 100-yard increments to 500 yards. Test targets are included showing how well this rifle’s barrels are regulated at both 50 and 100 yards, and the powder charge and bullet type used to achieve these tight groups. Bores are excellent, and show little if any frosting whatsoever.  Stock shows numerous handling marks and scratches, but no cracks or splits. Stock has pistol grip cap of steel, and a silver stock oval which is not yet engraved.  Rifle’s Bluing is browning on the tang, the locks and receiver, and is quite good on the buttplate. Barrels also quite good as to blue. Some Scattered scratches and handling marks in the barrel bluing. Locks and triggers work perfectly. Ramrod correct for rifle, and there is a period powder flask in the case. Weighs 9 pounds 8 ounces, and balances well.  The pictures tell the story, but feel free to contact me with questions. Try to find another! 🙂 For those with genuine interest, more photos can be supplied. A truly special rifle for the percussion enthusiast. Thanks for looking! Price: $19,999

What do you think of these insane double rifles?

Over the last few months, William Larkin Moore & Sons has posted some of the finest vintage double rifles I’ve ever seen. There’s quite a range of them, including these two droplock Westley Richards with a ton of killer original condition:

.577 Nitro Express WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Ejector, Mfg 1903,
.577 Nitro Express WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Ejector, Mfg 1903,

From the massive, like this side-by-side .577 Nitro Express WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Ejector, Mfg 1903. An elephant stomper like this can generate 7,010 Ft-lbf of punch with a 750-gr bullet — KABoom! Compare that to a .30-06, which generates 2,981Ft-lbf of smack with a 220-gr bullet.

To the mid-size, like this WESTLEY RICHARDS Deluxe Droplock Express .303 Savage Cased in Orig O&L case, Mfg 1907 Near new all original condition. With it’s lightweight, his double rifle would be perfect for deer hunting here in the States. And since it’s not a dangerous-game gun, the single trigger is just fine.

The collection WLM is selling also contains stuff like super rare SxS rifle: JOHN DICKSON & SON Round Body Sidelever Express .577 3″ BPE Cased. To date, Dickson has made around 2,000 Round Action guns. Of these, fifteen have been double rifles and two have been .577s. And the one you see here is in fantastic condition. Special? You bet.

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

And this ‘friggin oddball OU. It’s a WW GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition. This rifle is just weird, and I can’t imagine why it was ever built. No one I know has seen another like it, and I bet it’s a one-off. On top of that, it looks new. So whoever ordered in back in 1886 never bothered to hunt with it. Maybe once they got it they realized how odd it was and decided they would take something else to Africa.

What-the-what? A 12g W.W. Greener OU hammer rifle …

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

The OU rifle you see here is an oddball, a freak and weirdo. Of course, I would love to own it. Built in 1886, it’s breechloading British OU hammer rifle — the only one I’ve ever seen or hear about.

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

Hammerless over-under rifles aren’t uncommon. I’ve seen a number by Belgian and German makers and some British makers built them, too — including Boss.

According to the seller, this gun was made in 1886. That’s twenty-three years before Boss & Co patented their OU shotgun (1909), and even before Merkel started building their “Bock” hammerless OUs in the 1890s.

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

At close to 14.75bls, it’s a beast of a gun. I’m not sure what it was made to hunt — Cape Buffalo?, Rhinos? — but judging by its condition, it never made it into the field to do it.
