I have been collecting, buying, and selling fine shotguns for over 30 years. It is a treasure hunt extraordinaire that I have enjoyed immensely. There are times when you think you have seen it all, and then you come across a truly rare and amazing shotgun. Merkel has been building fine firearms since 1898 and built its first side x side in 1914. Mostly known for their fine shotguns made post-WWII after the lifting of the Iron Curtain, it is their PRE-WAR guns that collectors and shooters covet most. Pre-war Gerbruder Merkel is associated with finely crafted over/under guns more than the side x side guns. I have seen many of their over/unders. However, I was unaware of their BEST GUN sidelock side x sides known as the Model 127E as shown here with the fine Merkel we are offering for sale today. This Merkel, sn14777 built in 1926, remains in incredible factory original condition with 99% factory barrel blue, 99% vivid, bold factory case color, 99% charcoal blue trigger guard, and 98% factory finish remaining on the wonderfully figured European walnut stocks. This is a Holland & Holland style 9-pin sidelock action, complete with beaded fences, sculpted bolster on the frame, cocking indicators, and ALL GOLD-WASHED INTERNALS, INCLUDING THE EJECTOR RODS, EJECTOR HAMMERS, COCKING RODS, TRIGGERS, AND ALL PARTS OF THE LOCKS INCLUDING THE PINS THAT SHOW TO THE OUTSIDE. You just don’t see these features on anything but the company’s finest offering of the day. The engraving is the most detailed and perfectly executed rose and scroll engraving I have witnessed from any maker in the world. Study the photos on our and you will see what I mean. The gun is in as new condition both visually and mechanically. This is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY. We have stripped the action and forend to its smallest parts, Ultrasonic cleaned the old, dried oil from all the parts, inspected all for function and integrity, lubricated all and reassembled. The barrels have a wedge of engraving on the Krupp Steel rib, are tight on face and the hinge pin like a new gun, with ribs tight and barrels that ring true. See the specifications below for stock measurements, chokes, barrel wall thickness, etc. This is a rare gun, and a rare opportunity to own the finest Merkel has ever offered as a named Model 127E. Thanks for looking! Price:$17,950

Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun: Made between the two World Wars and remaining in remarkably high original condition. Westley Richards & Co. offered multi-barreled rifle and shotgun combination guns for much of the first half of the twentieth century. These were offered in two-barrel side by side “Cape Gun” configurations as well as three-barrel drillings. In a supplemental list from 1912 of items offered by Westley’s at the time, these guns were listed as: “…made in all bores, suitable for Indian, African, and Colonial sports. Special attention and care are given to the most essential features, viz:-durability, boring, fine cutting of the rifling, the fitting and adjustment of the sights, and regulation of the shooting. Every gun is guaranteed accurately sighted and shot.”. This is a 562 Grade completed November 14, 1924 for Mahomedally Noorbhoy, Bombay. The combination shotgun and rifle is built on an A&D fixed lock, non-ejector action with a Greener type crossbolt, listed in our ledgers as a “treble bite with tang lever”. The color hardened action has two triggers, automatic beetle back safety, and is absent any engraving save for the Maker’s name and an engraved thin-line border with “cut-away” fences.
The dovetailed lump, 28″ barrels are of Westley Richard’s Special Quality steel and bear the “Golden Triangle” trademark. The full-length matted rib has a slightly raised quarter rib, fitted with two folding leaves and a Tangent sight and a ramp front sight with a low profile brass beaded sight blade. The sight leaves are platinum lined and engraved (100, 200, 300-1,200 yds) respectively. The barrel is also engraved: “Westley Richards & Co. Birmingham”, “562 Grade” and “.500 Express 3 Inch Case Black Powder”. The walnut stock has a nice straight figure, a semi-pistol grip, and a 14 1/2″ LOP over a smooth steel butt. The splinter forend has a matching steel forend tip with a Deeley latch. The rifle is finished with traditional sling eyes and the stock oval remains blank. On the bottom of the buttstock, just behind the pistol grip, the wood is correctly stamped “Made in England”. Gun retains nearly all of it is original color hardening and it remains vivid still protected by the original lacquer. The stock and barrels remain equally well preserved, retaining nearly all the original oil finish on the stock and nearly all of the original barrel black. The bores remain perfect, in both the shotgun and rifled barrels and are dent and rust free and all original. These combination guns from Westley Richards are quite rare today in any condition. And this gun is in as nice a condition as any collector could ask for. But for a gun made to a price point and intended to be used in the World’s most demanding environments, the overall quality and handling of the gun is superb and to find it so well preserved, is nothing short of a miracle. Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address: This is the earliest Remington Whitmore Model 1874 I have ever seen. It has all matching serial numbers, #19. The original, engraved barrel address is truly a unique early feature. It is also engraved around the patent dates right in front of the lifter. The case hardening under the barrel on the frame and on the forearm steel is vivid. The case hardened locks and breech have turned a beautiful silver just like an old 1873 SAA. The 30-inch blued barrels go from blue to a thinning blue and plum color. The bores are in nice condition with a small amount of light pitting. This early hammer shotgun remains tight and the action is as solid as it was in 1874. The hammers cock crisply with a fine release on the triggers. The rebounding fire pins are just as crisp as the rest of the action. The buttstock is solid with no cracks but an inch and one-half above the steel butt plate there are two rack marks, one on each side (pictured) which are period usage. Fortunately, no one has ever tried to work on them. This is a beautiful and early American-made Remington cartridge shotgun that would stand proud in any fine Remington collection. Price:$1650

We have priced this gun to sell quickly, as I do not believe it has ever been in the field or used much at all. There is only the faintest hint of a primer ring on the standing breech indicating very little shooting. The RBL Reserve is a solid investment and will do you well on the sporting clays course or in the field. Price:$3,550

: 28 inch barrels. This firearm is somewhat of an enigma. I have not seen an Onyx case colored which was not part of a custom order. At any rate, an Onyx with a straight stock and insignia oval is not your everyday find. I have included pictures of any defects I could find. Hemingway went to Africa in 1933 and 1954. On his second trip, the .577 Nitro Express Westley Richards you see here and in the video above was the gun he carried.
The .577 Nitro Express is one of the most bad-ass hunting rounds of all time. Hemingway’s rifle fired a 750 gr. bullet, and generated a crushing 7,010 ft⋅lbf. By comparison, a .30-06 Springfield shooting a 220-gr bullet generates a wimpy 2,981 ft⋅lbf.
Famous Africa hunter John “Pondoro” Taylor wrote that the .577 Nitro Express was “a magnificent killer – it literally crumbles up an elephant”. Unfortunately, it could have the same impact on the man shooting it.

You don’t often you see a 100+-year-old double rifle in this kind of condition. Not only is it all original, but it also retains a ton of that original finish.
This gun was made by Webley & Scott for Army & Navy, a co-op that started in the 19th-century for military members. Army & Navy offered all kinds of firearms for its members, and Webley & Scott was one of the co-op’s biggest suppliers.
Along with the gun’s original finish and overall finish, a few things about it caught my eye, from the engraving and the ribbon fences to the wide top strap, the long top lever, and the toe-and-heel plates. While this wasn’t a best-quality gun in its day, it was a very nice one.
