Accompanying this gun is a PGCA research letter dated 2/15/2013 identifying as found today and ordered by Union Hardware & Metal Co. and shipped to them 7/15/1938. Also accompanying this gun is the original cancelled check Mr. Phillips used when he purchased the gun from legendary sporting arms dealer William L. Moore on 6/17/1975 in the amount of $5500 as well as the original clipped advertisement for the gun in the Gun List. Additional provenance includes a July of 1975 appraisal from Pachmayr Gun Works valuing the gun at $6,500. Mr. Phillips put together a one page research write up on the gun noting that Carl H. Beal was born in 1889 in Morton, Kansas. He moved to Southern California and worked in the oil industry and authored numerous books and articles on the exploration of gas. Mr. Beal was well known for his passion for boxed bird events and collumbardie in Southern California throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Mr. Beal died in 1946 and is buried in Glendale, CA.

Lot 51: RARE AND ICONIC L.C. SMITH A-3 GRADE 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN ILLUSTRATED PROFUSELY IN LT. COL WM BROPHY’S “L.C. SMITH SHOTGUNS” BOOK: SN. 205157. The A3 Grade was introduced to the line in 1895 as “The finest gun in the world for the money”. It was the highest grade L.C. Smith until the grade designations were changed in 1913. Made in 1906 with 30” Whitworth Fluid steel bbls, 2-3/4” chambers, matted concave rib and bbl extension with red mid and ivory front bead. Muzzles are nicely crowned and have bands of engraving as well as 1” scroll wedges. Breech ends of bbls have 2-1/2” wedges of scroll on tops and gold inlaid lightning bolts running through each and are hand engraved “Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel” / “Made to Order By the Hunter Arms Co. Fulton, NY”. Later factory replacement type-2 beavertail forend is finely checkered with fleur-de-lis ribbon at center and fully engraved banjo type roll release and sculptured iron. Inside of forend iron is hand engraved with scrollwork, SN and 1901 Lewis Ejector patent info. Bbl flats are nicely engine turned with hand engraved SN, bottom of tubes w/original Whitworth trademark stamps and forend lug stamped “A 3”. Masterfully engraved case hardened sidelock action is most certainly the work of Albert E. Kraus, employed from 1890-1945.

Receiver body has similar foliate scroll engraving interspersed w/ bouquet flourishes and bas-relief vine and scrollwork at the fences. The classic Setter with fallen quail on trigger plate, synonymous with the L.C.Smith brand, is beautifully executed. Blued trigger guard is rose and scroll engraved with hand-cut SN at tang. Auto ejectors, “Hunter One -Trigger”, non-auto safety. Gold inlaid “S” in front of flat safety slide.

Beautiful straight-hand buttstock of richly figured dark-streaked European walnut is finely checkered with fleur-de-lis and ribbon patterns terminating with an aging “No-Shoc” pad. Buttstock and forend are most certainly a period of use factory replacements (post-1920) and have been on the gun for much of its lifetime.

Lot 51: RARE AND ICONIC L.C. SMITH A-3 GRADE 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN ILLUSTRATED PROFUSELY IN LT. COL WM BROPHY’S “L.C. SMITH SHOTGUNS” BOOK

This exact gun is illustrated in ‘L.C.Smith Shotguns, LTC Wm S. Brophy, 1983 on the cover and pp 21, 47-49, 164-169, 187-188. Accompanied by a L.C.Smith Collectors Association research letter dated January 28, 2022, identifying this gun as being finished January 22, 1906 as one of only 17 twelve gauge guns total. No stock configuration nor shipping info is recorded but there is a notation “McR” at the margin of the ledger for this entry and likely indicates the owner at one time. Also accompanied by archival A & F records, kindly supplied by Griffin & Howe Research, indicating the gun, in its current configuration, was consigned to them by E.A.Thorne in 1960 and sold to H. Gordon Moore in 1961. Harry Gordon Moore, Jr. resided much of his adult life in Lynchburg VA. Mr. Moore was also the author of “Trigger Pullers: An Attempt to Convey the Art of Wingshooting,1976” a compendium of Moore’s articles on gamebird shooting, first published in Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, and The Shooter’s Bible. Note: Moore and Brophy were certainly literary colleagues in the Sporting Fraternity and a friendly loan of the A3 for Brophy’s book is probable. Charlie Hunter spent his lifetime in and around the Staunton – Lynchburg area and was undoubtedly well-acquainted with fellow sportsman Moore. Hunter likely acquired this gun from Moore directly or from his estate after his passing in 1992.

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:
Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore: An excellent little Webley & Scott Model 728, a 28 bore double box lock ejector with 25″ barrels choked 3/4 (improved modified) in the left tube and 1/4 (improved cylinder) in the right tube. There is extensive floral scroll engraving covering the action, bottom plate, trigger guard, toplever, and forearm hardware and “WEBLEY & SCOTT” on each side of the action. There is even a flourish of floral scroll engraving on the breach end of the rib. The right tube is engraved atop the breech end “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.” and the left tube is similarly engraved “SERVICE ARMAMENT CO, RIDGEFIELD, N.J., U.S.A.” Mounted in a very nicely figured walnut stock with multi-point checkered forearm and English straight hand butt stock with teardrop flats, a vacant gold (I think) oval escutcheon at the toe and checkered butt. There are a few very small spots of finish loss and handling marks to the forearm. This dandy is ready to go in it’s original canvas covered takedown hard case complete with original trade label and all the original accessories including a pair of snap caps, an oil bottle, a two piece cleaning rod stored under the barrels, a wire brush, a patch swab, a mop, and a box of cleaning patches. Remarkable, also included is the original hang tag. This particular 728 appears to me to be a little better than usual with highly figured wood and a gold oval escutcheon near the toe. The butt is original too and hardly ever grounded as can be seen in the photos; so often these have been modified with a pad. The Model 728 is a fantastic little English hand made side-by-side gun, made before the days of mass produced CNC machined guns. This gun is slightly used – it bagged several quail and a pheasant in its one and only outing last season – but is in excellent although not quite perfect condition. The pictures tell the story. I think these guns are a great value and a good investment. I’ve seen them appreciate considerably on these pages even in just the last year. They aren’t bespoke guns but they do exhibit fine English craftsmanship. This 728 is a gun you can be proud of in any company but at a fraction of the cost of a bespoke gun. Price: $7,500*

Super Rare Luigi Franchi Condor SxS 20ga Matched Pair

Super Rare Luigi Franchi Condor SxS 20ga Matched Pair: It is very scarce to find a Luigi Franchi Condor model in 20ga inside the United States little alone a Matched Pair. This fine pair was constructed in 1950 for E. Casciano of Rome which was one of the largest provider of high grade guns in Italy at the time. This pair is identical in every way with the exception of the choking which I feel these were built for small gauge live pigeon competitions or for driven birds I am not 100% sure on either however a very nice pair indeed. This pair has the traditional square body actions which is uncommon for this model as well as the Full Coverage Best Quality Engraving as these were definitely special ordered and remain in excellent original condition cased in their original case which included”s two original keys . UNFIRED 1914 A.H. Fox 20ga A-grade Side-by-Side: Hello, I have for sale a musuem quality fox 20 gauge A-grade that I acquired several years ago.  I have the factory order card for this gun and it is in the same condition as it left the factory.  This gun is unfired and is as MINT an example as you will find.  It would be impossible to upgrade this gun in any way.  All of the factory finishes are 100%.  This gun has been so well cared for that there is no rust, pitting, cracks, wear….nothing.  The factory wood finish is superb as is the checkering and the engraving/case colors are flawless and sharp.  This gun has the early snap-on forend and second generation “gough” style engraving.  Specs are as follows.  28″ barrels, double triggers, extractors, choked cyl/mod (as per factory card), 2.5″ chambers, mirror bores and 100% bluing throughout.  This gun has drops of about 1 9/16 and 2 7/8 and the LOP is the factory standard 14 1/8″ to 14 1/4″.  This gun has the factory buttplate and screws as well…all still mint.  Please, no low-ball offers.  Serious inquiries only.  I can provide additional pictures as needed for serious buyers. PS:  this is only the second year for 20 gauge foxes and a very early example with the gough engraving…quite a rare find here. Price: $8,750*

Fabbri Best Grade "Funeral" Sidelock 12 ga. O/U Shotgun
Fabbri Best Grade “Funeral” Sidelock 12 ga. O/U Shotgun

Fabbri Best Grade “Funeral” Sidelock 12 ga. O/U Shotgun: Fabbri Best Grade “Funeral” Gold Line Sidelock 12 gauge O/U shotgun.  Masterfully hand-made in 1972 by Armi Fabbri this “pigeon” configured O/U comes with two original 30” sets of Bohler Super Blitz steel barrels. Both sets are identical in that they are fitted with “flat” vent ribs that taper from 7/16” to 5/16” and have brass front and mid beads. The set marked “I” is choked .020” Modified and .035” Full.  Set “II” is choked .035” Full and .043” XXFull. The sidelock receiver was engraved by Italian master engraver Ferruccio Iora in the minimalistic “Funeral” style which features very fine, and very difficult to execute gold wire on a “black” finished frame.  In the case of this gun “less is more” as you will surely agree, this is a splendid looking Fabbri. The stock and forearm were fashioned from a beautiful piece of walnut.  The forearm is fitted with an Anson style push button release.  The buttstock has a right-hand palm swell.  As the presents it has a 14 ¾” LOP over several spacers and a recoil pad.  The DAC is 1 3/8” and the DAH is 1 3/8” with about ¼” right hand cast.  Although the dimensions are very shootable, you will agree that a new stock is in order.  Tulio Fabbri estimates $10k to restock the gun by the factory.  Whereas it could be professionally restocked here in the states for considerably less money! Of course, this is a Fabbri which indicates it is one of the very best guns in the world from both a materials standpoint and from a fit and finish perspective! The gun weighs 7 lbs. 11 oz., and balances beautifully.  Overall condition is 98%+. In all regards this is one of the finest guns in the world and this very gun would be approximately $200k to replace.  Cased in maker’s leather luggage case. SN:  E463 Price: $75,000*

Overall, the gun remains in near mint original condition.  Barrels retain nearly all of their original blue with only a very minor rub or two.  Receiver retains virtually all of its bold original case color as seen in the photos.  Stocks are sound and retain virutally all of their original finish with only very minor handling marks and upon very close inspection do show some repair work at wrist which is very near invisible. Bores are brilliant and shiny and mechanics are crisp.  This is a very near mint gun which has been scarcely fired.  Breech face shows almost no shell ring evidence. Price: $3,295

Truly exceptional & finest quality fully optioned all original Parker 12ga A1 Special w/ fantastic Huey Case - Choice in every regard!!!
Truly exceptional & finest quality fully optioned all original Parker 12ga A1 Special w/ fantastic Huey Case – Choice in every regard!!!

Truly exceptional & finest quality fully optioned all original Parker 12ga A1 Special w/ fantastic Huey Case – Choice in every regard!!!: Exceedingly rare all original Parker A-1 Special 12ga built on a #2 frame with 30″ original Peerless Steel ventilated rib barrels.  Original beavertail forend is beautifully checkered and iron fully engraved.  The receiver is full coverage “Invincible” style scroll engraved with game scenes – very rare on any A1 Special, this one with large Ruffed Grouse on bottom, Geese with Pointer on left, Pheasant with setter on right all surrounded by perfectly executed full coverage scroll.  Barrels with scroll wedges at breech ends and frame with carved fences and carved pigtails on the bottom.  Stocked with an exceptional piece of European Walnut and fantastically checkered as seen in the photos.  Back end of the butt has a small Monte Carol and terminates with its original hardening Silvers pad.  Housed in a magnificent Marvin Huey elephant hide and oak case.  The case is custom fitted for this gun with accessories and is a remarkable work of art in its own right with a replacement cost today in excess of $5500!  Overall, the gun remains in fantastic all original untouched condition.  The barrels retain more than 97% original blue.  Action retains a lot of the original case color, particularly strong on the sides, but percentage is hard to ascertain due to the full coverage engraving.  Easily more than 50%, though.  Stocks are beautiful, sound, and original and retain nearly all of their original finish with only very minor handling marks.  The bores are brilliant and shiny, mechanics are crisp.  Gun was not used very much.  Case is near mint with only very minor rubs. I’ve handled more than my fair share of ultra high end Parkers in the past decade and this one easily ranks among the finest of them all for class, character, originality, rarity, and condition.  The gun is engraved in a really rare pattern in that game scenes are not often found on A1’s and this gun comes from one of the best Parker collections ever assembled and was considered one of the crown jewels in that collection.  This gun should be considered for its form and function as an alternate investment as it is nearly impossible to improve upon. Price: $159,500
