Very near mint and all original Parker VH 12ga 28″- Reference Gun

Very near mint and all original Parker VH 12ga 28″- Reference Gun: Advanced collectors always have what they call “reference guns”. A gun that they know to be all original to compare other guns to. This particular gun, a 225k SN range VH 12ga with original 28″ Vulcan Steel barrels is absolutely a reference gun. Made with capped pistol grip, splinter forend, double triggers and extractors. The gun remains in exceptional near mint original condition with more than 98% original barrel blue, virtually all of its bold original case color, and nearly all of its original stock finish. Here are the technical details on the gun: made on a 1-1/2 frame with drops of 1-1/2″ at comb and 2-3/4″ at heel and LOP of 14-1/2″ over the original DHBP. The gun weighs 6lbs 15oz and the barrels measure .730 (R) with .018(mod) and .732 (L) with .028 (imp. mod) and both barrels have .028MWT.  This gun is guaranteed authentic and completely original in every respect and comes to me from one of the great Parker collections in the country. PGCA Letter included identifying the gun exactly as found today. It is very near mint and truly fantastic. I wish every Parker I owned was this fine and easy to describe. Simply put, no excuses on this gun. Price: $5995

Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun
Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun

Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun: Made between the two World Wars and remaining in remarkably high original condition. Westley Richards & Co. offered multi-barreled rifle and shotgun combination guns for much of the first half of the twentieth century. These were offered in two-barrel side by side “Cape Gun” configurations as well as three-barrel drillings. In a supplemental list from 1912 of items offered by Westley’s at the time, these guns were listed as: “…made in all bores, suitable for Indian, African, and Colonial sports. Special attention and care are given to the most essential features, viz:-durability, boring, fine cutting of the rifling, the fitting and adjustment of the sights, and regulation of the shooting. Every gun is guaranteed accurately sighted and shot.”.  This is a 562 Grade completed November 14, 1924 for Mahomedally Noorbhoy, Bombay.  The combination shotgun and rifle is built on an A&D fixed lock, non-ejector action with a Greener type crossbolt, listed in our ledgers as a “treble bite with tang lever”. The color hardened action has two triggers, automatic beetle back safety, and is absent any engraving save for the Maker’s name and an engraved thin-line border with “cut-away” fences.
The dovetailed lump, 28″ barrels are of Westley Richard’s Special Quality steel and bear the “Golden Triangle” trademark. The full-length matted rib has a slightly raised quarter rib, fitted with two folding leaves and a Tangent sight and a ramp front sight with a low profile brass beaded sight blade. The sight leaves are platinum lined and engraved (100, 200, 300-1,200 yds) respectively.  The barrel is also engraved: “Westley Richards & Co. Birmingham”, “562 Grade” and “.500 Express 3 Inch Case Black Powder”.  The walnut stock has a nice straight figure, a semi-pistol grip, and a 14 1/2″ LOP over a smooth steel butt. The splinter forend has a matching steel forend tip with a Deeley latch. The rifle is finished with traditional sling eyes and the stock oval remains blank. On the bottom of the buttstock, just behind the pistol grip, the wood is correctly stamped “Made in England”. Gun retains nearly all of it is original color hardening and it remains vivid still protected by the original lacquer. The stock and barrels remain equally well preserved, retaining nearly all the original oil finish on the stock and nearly all of the original barrel black. The bores remain perfect, in both the shotgun and rifled barrels and are dent and rust free and all original. These combination guns from Westley Richards are quite rare today in any condition. And this gun is in as nice a condition as any collector could ask for. But for a gun made to a price point and intended to be used in the World’s most demanding environments, the overall quality and handling of the gun is superb and to find it so well preserved, is nothing short of a miracle. Price: $15,000

Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address:
Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address:

Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address: This is the earliest Remington Whitmore Model 1874 I have ever seen. It has all matching serial numbers, #19. The original, engraved barrel address is truly a unique early feature. It is also engraved around the patent dates right in front of the lifter. The case hardening under the barrel on the frame and on the forearm steel is vivid. The case hardened locks and breech have turned a beautiful silver just like an old 1873 SAA. The 30-inch blued barrels go from blue to a thinning blue and plum color. The bores are in nice condition with a small amount of light pitting. This early hammer shotgun remains tight and the action is as solid as it was in 1874. The hammers cock crisply with a fine release on the triggers. The rebounding fire pins are just as crisp as the rest of the action. The buttstock is solid with no cracks but an inch and one-half above the steel butt plate there are two rack marks, one on each side (pictured) which are period usage. Fortunately, no one has ever tried to work on them. This is a beautiful and early American-made Remington cartridge shotgun that would stand proud in any fine Remington collection. Price: $1650

Connecticut Shotgun RBL 16ga. – 29”, AS NEW, “RESERVE” VINTAGE FIREARMS INC: Serial Number: RBL004829. General Specs: Connecticut Shotgun, 2015±, 16 Ga, Weight 6lbs 12oz, Chokes LM/M, LOP 14 3/4″, DAH 2 1/2″, DAC 1 1/2″.  Many of you that enjoy shooting with the side by side shotgun are familiar with Tony Galazan’s well received RBL series of round bodied guns.  The gun presented here is an as new RBL RESERVE series from Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Co.  The RBL is a robust gun with excellent mechanics and a very appealing look with its bone and charcoal case colored receiver, gold plated triggers, and nicely figured walnut stock.  This gun shipped with 29” barrels that retain 100% of their fine rust blue, perfect bores, choked LM/M.  The metal overall retains 99.9% of the factory finishes, with the only wear of any kind at the safety on the top tang.  The wood has a very nice figure and retains all of its original finish and perfect checkering.  The gun balances dead on the hinge pin and has a very solid feel and comes to shoulder the way a fine side x side is supposed to.  Galazan has a solid performer with his RBL.  We have priced this gun to sell quickly, as I do not believe it has ever been in the field or used much at all.  There is only the faintest hint of a primer ring on the standing breech indicating very little shooting.  The RBL Reserve is a solid investment and will do you well on the sporting clays course or in the field. Price: $3,550

See if you could handle Hemingway’s elephant gun…

THE IMMORTAL ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S WESTLEY RICHARDS BEST QUALITY HAND DETACHABLE SINGLE TRIGGER EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE W/ORIGINAL CASE.

Way back in the early 20th century, Ernest Hemingway was the man and, in a lot of ways, THE MAN.

A literary icon by 27 (wow, that makes me feel like a chump), Hemingway was famous for his to-the-point, English-Pointer lean sentences and simple dialogue.

He was also famous for he-man exploits like African safaris.

Hemingway went to Africa in 1933 and 1954. On his second trip, the .577 Nitro Express Westley Richards you see here and in the video above was the gun he carried.

*THE IMMORTAL ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S WESTLEY RICHARDS BEST QUALITY HAND DETACHABLE SINGLE TRIGGER EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE W/ORIGINAL CASE.

The .577 Nitro Express is one of the most bad-ass hunting rounds of all time. Hemingway’s rifle fired a 750 gr. bullet, and generated a crushing 7,010 ft⋅lbf. By comparison, a .30-06 Springfield shooting a 220-gr bullet generates a wimpy 2,981 ft⋅lbf.

Famous Africa hunter John “Pondoro” Taylor wrote that the .577 Nitro Express was “a magnificent killer – it literally crumbles up an elephant”. Unfortunately, it could have the same impact on the man shooting it.

Army & Navy – Webley & Scott – Deluxe 450 BPE – High Condition – All Original 1896 Rifle !

This rifle is chambered for .450 Black Powder Express (.450 314-inch BPE), one of the most popular rounds of the late 19th century. Many different types of rifles were chambered for .450 BPE and these guns were used for everything from deer stalking in Scotland to elephant hunting in Africa. The round was replaced by the more potent .450 Nitro Express in 1898 (BTW: go here to see how the .450NE compares to a .470NE).

James MacNaughton ~ This is the rare and sought after Skeleton Frame gun which is so beautiful

James MacNaughton ~ This is the rare and sought after Skeleton Frame gun which is so beautiful!: Hammerless Sidelocks – This is the highly sought after Scottish round action with the skeleton frame giving it the appearance of a bar in wood. Colonel Fosbery’s patent #7568 of June 20, 1885 was intended to make a gun capable of being fired either with shot, ball or conical bullet. Holland & Holland gave the rifled choke-bore its name, “Paradox”. Back in the day, Paradox meant “That which is contrary to received opinion; strange, but true”. H&H wanted 100-yard performance that duplicated the Express rifle at that time, and still have a gun that gave very good patterns. The Paradox will pattern from cylinder to improved cylinder chokes. H&H built a total of 1,463 Paradox guns. The last Paradox, by serial number only, was a 10 bore #15979 and finished October 10, 1930 at a cost of 166 pounds. The very last was a 12 bore #15972 and was finished in 1933. Price: $29,500

For sale: 20g Boss OU…the stuff of dreams.

I’ve never handled a holy relic. But I have handled a Boss OU.

The first time was in the summer of 1999. I was working at New England Arms, a gunshop Forbes FYI magazine said was “probably the finest gunshop in the world.” (It’s owner ended up in federal prison, but that’s another story).

Anyway, a 16g Boss OU came into the shop on a Tuesday. Even though it had problems, we sold it by Thursday. I think the price was $65,000. We mailed it out the following Monday, giving me fives days to admire it (I worked Mon-Sat). It went to some guy in Austin, TX, with “Dell” money.

12 gauge Boss O/U Double Barrel Pigeon Shotgun
A 12 gauge Boss O/U Double Barrel Pigeon Shotgun

Since then, I’ve handled Boss OUs in 12g, 16g, 20g, 28g, & .410. I’ve seen a 10g, and I know the whereabouts of a couple of 14gs. I’ve seen Boss OUs with rare, Rigby-style rising bites, and ones with the various action styles Boss used over the years for no apparent reason.

I’ve even handled one of the finest firearms Boss has ever built — and one of the finest sporting guns ever made — this unique round-action OU double rifle from 1929.

Boss & Co. Over & Under Double Rifle
Boss & Co. Over & Under Double Rifle

Boss & Co. introduced their revolutionary OU in 1909. The company is still around today and still building its legendary shotgun. I think the starting price is £115,000 or so.

BTW: If you have a Boss OU and would like to know more about it or sell it, drop me an email — Gregg@DogsandDoubles.com. I can help you out.

Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32" Bernard barrels:
Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32″ Bernard barrels:

Incredible High Original Condition Parker C Grade Hammer Gun with 32″ Bernard barrels: For your consideration is something truly astounding. This is one of 10 made in this configuration. The gun is a 12ga C Grade with 32″ Bernard barrels. It is SN 39432, having been made in 1884. According to the Parker Identification and Serialization book, this was one of three consecutive guns in a row in this exact configuration. The gun itself is in incredible original condition and retains more than 60% bright original case color. Stocks retain most of their original finish with some finish added for preservation. The barrels are stunning and retain nearly all of their bold original pattern. The gun retains its original skeleton buttplate with LOP of 14-1/4″. The gun weighs 8lbs 7oz having been made on a #2 frame and has drops of 1-15/16 DAC and 2-15/16 DAH. Bores are bright and shiny and mechanics are crisp. The gun balances and swings like a dream. Bores measure .754 (rt) and .752 (left) with .034 choke in the right and .032 in the left. If you have ever wanted a truly “world class” and heirloom quality Parker hammer gun, look no further. I don’t think there is a better C Grade 32″ Bernard barreled hammer gun than this one as I have never seen or heard of one better than this in this configuration. Price: $13,950
