Webley & Scott and W & C Scott is one of the best-known names in the British sporting gun trade. They made a lot of guns and also produced some very high-quality pieces. Right at 85,000 double guns were made by Webley & Scott from 1897 to 1979. They provided a lot of semi-finished and finished guns to nearly everyone in the trade. P. (Philip) Webley set up shop in 1838 and William Scott had started in 1834, in 1897 they joined and became Webley & Scott. Under that name they made guns until 1979 and then it again became W & C Scott. In 1985 Holland & Holland acquired the name and I believe the last Scott made was in 1991. Anyone who has shot or hunted with an English boxlock, regardless of the name on the gun, most likely has shot a Webley rifle or smoothbore. Price: $4,950*

Belgian Sidelock 12 gauge SxS, profusely engraved by Josef Fugger
Belgian Sidelock 12 gauge SxS, profusely engraved by Josef Fugger

Belgian Sidelock 12 gauge SxS, profusely engraved by Josef Fugger: I really think that the artistry of world reknown Master Engraver Josef Fugger that is beautifully on display here says it all!  The birds, the  dogs, the hunter, the oak leaves, the flowers, the trees and even the borders are spectacularly detailed and masterfully executed. Other than that the canvas for Mr. Fugger’s work is a Belgian 12 gauge sidelock SxS shotgun.  Not certain of the manufacture date.  The gun has 30″ barrels both with .729″ bores and stamped 18.5 which converts to .7284. On top of the barrel is a raised, hand filed, taper solid rib, inscribed H. Antoine, address and Paris.  The right bore has .009″ SK/IC choke and the left at .030″ Full. Double triggers with the front articulating.  Hand detachable sidelocks, automatic safety The handsome French Walnut straight grip stock has a 14 1/4″ LOP to the checkered butt; 1 1/2″ drop at comb and 2 1/4″ drop at heel with significant 1/2″ cast for a right hand shooter.  The matching splinter forearm has an Anson push button release at the forearm tip. Weight is 6 lbs. 8 oz. and the gun handles with easy and is actually quite “lively”. There is a “mystery” silver piece in the bottom of the forearm.  Why its there?  Maybe for initials? Condition is very good.  The barrels are rust blued with some very fine traces of surface rust that needs to be polished with 0000 steel wool.  The frame is nearly perfect.  The wood is a dark oil finish with no cracks or breaks..a testimony to the quality of the fitting and there are just a few light handling marks. Perfect gun for Vintage shooting events. SN:  2088 Price: $13,000*

A very British pair of Italian 20g over-under shotguns …

Pair of Over Under 20g guns by B Rizinni – 29″ x 3″ multi choke barrels, Graham Mackinlay & Co, Gunmakers
Pair of Over Under 20g guns by Rizinni – 29″ x 3″ multi choke barrels, Graham Mackinlay & Co, Gunmakers

I did a doubletake the first time I saw these 20 gauge Rizzini OUs. Graham Mackinlay & Co, Gunmakers, in Scotland has them on their website now.

Even though these guns were bult in Italy, they scream B-R-I-T-I-S-H. Every time I look at them, I think “Boss” for just a second. So what’s going on? These guns were made by Rizzini gunmakers, Marcheno, Italy.  They reached the UK by way of London gunmaker John Roberts & Sons, Gunmakers. I believe Roberts tweaked the guns for British tastes, like having a Ferrari modified by Aston Martin.

Along with their looks, here’s what I like about them: They have 15″ stocks, reliable single triggers, 29″ bbls, and choke tubes. They’re on the heavy side for 20 gauges (6lbs, 12oz), but this weight makes them more versatile. You could upland hunt your way across the USA with them and then go shoot driven game in the UK. Also, they’re modern guns, so steel shot shouldn’t be a problem, and there are plenty of people in the US who can service them if you have any issues.

You can learn more about Roberts/Rizzini OUs in this article: J Roberts & Son of London, Rizzini EM pair shotgun review, The Field, Michael Yardley, 2008

Pair of Over Under 20g guns by B Rizinni – 29″ x 3″ multi choke barrels, Graham Mackinlay & Co, Gunmakers

Pair of Over Under 20g guns by B Rizinni – 29″ x 3″ multi-choke barrels: This pair of 20g over and unders by B Rizzini has 29″ x 3″ multi-choked barrels.  The actions and locks are engraved with fine scroll work with foliage design and are fitted with single selective triggers with pierced hold open top levers. They have very well-matched and well-figured, straight-hand stocks, measuring 15″ which include 1/2″ recoil pads and they come with their leather case with trade label and accessories, including of course a set of chokes for both guns.  With gold numbers 1 and 2 in-laid on the top levers, breech ends and fore-end woods, these guns would be a wonderful buy for someone. Weight: 6lbs, 12oz. Perfect barrel condition. Price: £3,800*

From back when Holland & Holland was just H. Holland …

A cased double-barreled percussion shotgun by H. HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND ST. LONDON
A cased double-barreled percussion shotgun by H. HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND ST. LONDON

Back in 19th century and into the 20th, most people who went into gunmaking in the UK started with an apprenticeship. But that’s not how Harris Holland, the founder of Holland & Holland, found his way into the business.

He never completed a gunmaking apprenticeship, and I doubt he could build any part of a gun. Instead, Harris Holland was a successful tobacco merchant who was also into pigeon shooting and grouse shooting. He was born in 1806, and, at first, retailing guns was his side hustle. In 1835, he started selling guns full-time and founded what became Holland & Holland.

A cased double-barreled percussion shotgun by H. HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND ST. LONDON
The maker’s label for a cased double-barreled percussion shotgun by H. HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND ST. LONDON

The H. Holland side-by-side percussion shotgun you see here is one of his percussion shotguns, probably a 14 gauge. It’s coming to auction this Friday, June 21st, at the Czerny’s International Auction House’s Fine Antique Arms and Militaria from around the world sale. (BTW: Before you think about driving over to see it, the sale is in Sarzana, Italy.)

I’m not quite sure when this gun was made. I would say the 1850s. But, the seller doesn’t show the gun’s serial number, and the case and label may not be original. Holland didn’t move to 98 New Bond St until 1858. So, who knows? Maybe the gun was made in the 1860s, near the very end of the percussion era.

Regardless, the gun looks like it’s in nice shape, with maybe a bit of freshening up over its lifetime. Its simplicity is what I like most about it. When it was built, I doubt it was the finest-grade shotgun Holland offered. But it’s still beautifully shaped, and it has plenty of the understated elegance that makes British shotguns so nice.

W.W. Greener RFHT60 450/400 3 1/4” SxS Double Rifle: My days of hunting in Africa are probably over so its time to pass this fine Greener 450/400 3 1/4″ double rifle along to someone who may take it back once more.  It has 28″ barrels with excellent bores, one standing and two folding leaf rear sights, ejectors, weighs 10 1/2lbs, and a LOP of 14 5/8″.  The actions locks up tight and solid.  I believe the metal finishes to be original with the case colors faded to about 20% in protected areas.  Barrel black is in very good condition except for the area where I carried the rifle in my hand and that area is a bit faded.  The wood is solid with scratches and abrasions appropriate to a 99 year old rifle that was used to hunt.  Checkering is very good.  Price includes shipping. NEW James MacNaughton Skeleton Round Action 28 Bore – In Oak & Leather Case with Accessories – 2-3/4”
NEW James MacNaughton Skeleton Round Action 28 Bore – In Oak & Leather Case with Accessories – 2-3/4”

NEW James MacNaughton Skeleton Round Action 28 Bore – In Oak & Leather Case with Accessories – 2-3/4”: Handmade and handsome NEW MacNaughton 28 bore round action “Skeleton” gun with a dark, rich highly figured stock. The skeleton action is nicely complimented by the graceful shape of the bar-in-wood stock. The exquisite engraving of the MacNaughton trademark best vine-leaf pattern was executed by master engraver, Peter Cusack, and marks this as a very special shotgun. Made in 2017 this new gun is now located in the US and available for quick shipping. Since 1879 MacNaughton has made less than 150 round action triggerplate “Skeleton” guns. Only three are in 28 bore! Presented in its oak and leather case complete with a full cover canvas cover and a full complement of accessories made by the late Mike Marsh. Weighs 5lb 4oz making it easy to carry for a day afield or a session of clays. For a handmade Scottish side-by-side that stands out of the crowd look no further. MacNaughton’s Edinburgh Gun is arguably one of the most elegant designs ever made.

The London proofed 27” nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. They are topped by a raised, solid concave gamestyle rib. The rib is inscribed “James MacNaughton 21 Frederick Street Edinburgh”. The barrels are choked 3/4 and 3/4. The highly figured European walnut stock and splinter forearm are finished in a hand rubbed satin oil finish. Length of pull is 15-1/4” to a checkered butt.

For the discriminating buyer this is a rare opportunity to own a “new” and unique 28 bore version of this iconic round action by the first Scottish maker to produce them in the skeleton variant. If you ordered one today it would entiail a three year wait and would cost over $105,000 not including the accessories! A feast for the eyes and a joy to shoot, don’t let this once-in-a lifetime opportunity get away. Price: $64,950*

The last time there was a TRUE and CORRECT Grade 45 (in any gauge) on the market was 12 years ago (when I found this one at a Vintagers event). For reference, the “J.P. Sauer Prussian Grade 45 SxS 20 Gauge” currently advertised under this GI Catetory “Sauer Shotguns – Prussian” is really a Grade 40.

Here’s an excerpt from the Double Gun Journal, Volume 15, Issue 2, Summer 2004, Page 139:  “Sauer Grade 45 guns are very uncommon with only a few known examples among collectors.  The Grade 45 is listed and described in the SD&G (1907) catalogues as being ornamented with game scene engraving with gold inlays.  Any potential buyer of a Grade 45 would have to ante up some $400 to pay for one of the finest Sauer shotguns ever produced and a staggering sum, for the times, of $600 for the Grade 60.  Four to six hundred dollars was not small change by any means in 1907 and this explains why so few of these higher-graded Sauer boxlocks were produced”. Price: $13,500*

Cogswell & Harrison, 20b. Victor Model Sidelock SxS
Cogswell & Harrison, 20b. Victor Model Sidelock SxS

Cogswell & Harrison, 20b. Victor Model Sidelock SxS: COGSWELL & HARRISON, 20 b., EARLY “VICTOR” MODEL, MADE IN 1880 (Victor Models first introduced in 1879). This is a back-action full sidelock ; likely one of the first made in this small gauge which is rare in any English shotgun. Original Damascus barrels have updated “BNP” nitro proofs (see pix) and measure 28-1/8″, have 2-1/2″ chambers, and are in excellent condition inside and out.  Min. barrel-wall thicknesses are at least 20 thousandths at the very IC/IC muzzle, where there is little pressure. Then graduating to 30 and much greater when measuring towards the chambers. Nevertheless, I have always shot low-pressure RST cartridges in this gun — and since it was built in 1880 it has been fed with black powder for at least a few years prior to my 20 years as owner …it has been with me since I purchased from Holt’s in England — this gun has been cleaned of the black powder and babied throughout its Nitro years! English stock has:  14-3/8″ LOP, 1-1/2″ DAC; 2″ DAH.  This gun weighs 5lb.-10 Oz. and is originally cased with label. Price: $5,250*

The very best: An incredible pair of vintage 12g Boss & Co. OUs ….

BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER UNDER SHOTGUNS-#7425/7426
BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER UNDER SHOTGUNSSHOTGUNS. SHOWING #7425 OF THE PAIR. As good as it gets.

This pair of Boss OUs from 1927 are two of the finest shotguns I’ve seen in a while.  If you want to own the best of the best, step up and write the check. These rare guns have what it takes to justify the big bucks.

  1. Original condition. Even though they’re almost 100 years old, all that color-case hardening on the action, and all the blacking on the barrels, forend iron, and other bits, looks absolutely right for pre-WW2 Bosses. The only update I see is the guns were reproofed in London for 2 3/4″ chambers (70mm).
  2. Superb quality. These OUs have the little touches that you only see on the finest British guns — share, crips edge on the action and toplever, perfectly fitted locks and forends, great proportions and curves, engraving that almost sparkles, and genuine French walnut stocks that enhance the looks the guns without stealing the show. These touches make these guns stunning and beautiful.
  3. Historical significance. Boss OUs were the most expensive shotguns in the world when this pair was made. They were built to the highest standards by some of the finest craftsmen in the British trade. They’re a direct link to everything that the golden age of British gunmaking stood for then and represents today.

BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER UNDER SHOTGUNS. SHOWING #7425 OF THE PAIR

According to Griffin & Howe:

“Boss & co. Pair No. 7425-6 were made in 1927 for Hendon Chubb, the founder of Chubb Insurance. This pair is unique in the fact that they were never intended to be used by just Hendon, they were also made to be shared by his son Percy Chubb; and as such were supplied with two butt pads to fit the length of pull. One set being thin black plates for Percy, and a set of walnut plates measuring one half inch longer for Hendon. Keeping with the theme that the guns were to be shared by father and son, a pair of oak and leather cases were supplied; instead of the ordinary case intended to carry both firearms. The cases are still in remarkable condition despite being nearly a century old and contain an assortment of accessories including a full cleaning kit, snap caps and of course the spare butt plates. After years of use by the Chubb’s with the original 2-1/2 chambers, the guns were Re proofed to modern 70mm chambers at the London proofing house. Eventually the guns left the possession of the Chubb’s and entered the collection of a New Jersey Collector, where they remained until early 2024 when they were taken in by Griffin & Howe in Andover New Jersey and offered up for sale.

BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER-UNDER SHOTGUNS. SHOWING #7425 OF THE PAIR. You can see how the engraving sparkles and how the curves, lines, and proportions of the action, locks, triggerguard, and stock complement each other.

The pair are the of finest quality Boss & Co. could offer,  possessing color case hardened receivers that still retain nearly all of the original color, with the wonderful fine rose and scroll engraving that Boss & Co. does so well. The barrels measure 30 inches in length and have no rib as is typical of Boss & Co O/U’s. Being a true pair, the firearms have identical bores and chokes, measuring out to an improved cylinder on the top barrel and ¼ choke on the bottom barrel. Both firearms are stocked in highly figured walnut and have a straight wrist. The fore end comes with the distinctive extended Boss style fore end iron. Lastly, the triggers. The firearms are equipped with single triggers and are true over/unders; meaning the top barrel will always fire before the bottom barrel.

In short, this pair of shotguns are a perfect example of the quality that is to be expected from Boss & Co. As this pair has a nearly a century long life to prove it.”

Boss & Co. was founded in 1812.  John Robertson took control of the company in 1893. Robertson was an A list, gunmaker-to-the-trade at the time, working for most of London’s most prestigious names. He was also a prolific inventor. The same year he took over Boss, he patented the company’s famous single trigger (the world’s first reliable single trigger); in 1897, he patented Boss-style ejectors (the best ejector system for a SxS); and in 1909 he patented the Boss OU.

BOSS & CO BEST PAIR 12 GAUGE OVER-UNDER SHOTGUNS-#7425/7426

Robertson had an engineer’s mind and an artist’s eyes. Mechanically, his new Boss OU was slim and elegant like a Boss SxS. It also handled like one. Aesthetically, Robertson’s OU blended lines, curves, polished/engraved surfaces, metalwork/wood and proportions in a way that made the Boss OU the most beautiful over-under shotgun ever made. They were, and are, a pinnacle of British gunmaking.

A super rare SxS: Manufrance Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” …

Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾”, @ www.dorleac-dorleac.com

Here’s one of the rarest I’ve come across. It’s a Manufrance Ideal, model Ideal D’Art. Dorleac & Dorleac L’Atelier de Chasse in Perpignan, France has it on their site.

Ideal d'Art - Type 356 "Ace of Spades" MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾", @ www.dorleac-dorleac.com
Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾”, @ www.dorleac-dorleac.com

Manufrance introduced their Ideal-model shotguns in the 1880s, around the same time that British gunmakers like James Purdey & Sons, W. & C. Scott, and Westley Richards were transitioning from hammerguns to modern hammerless designs.

Ideals are built on a simple, rugged design, and they’re extremely intuitive to use. After firing, you simply drop your finger and lift the lever behind the triggers to open and cock the gun. It’s a very slick system. You can see more Ideals and learn more about them here and here

BTW: The Manufrance Ideal is not a “Round Action”. While it shares some of the looks of a MacNaughton and a Dickson, it’s a different design and an entirely different type of gun.

Ideal d’Art – Type 356 “Ace of Spades” MANUFRANCE 12-70mm/2¾”:* Considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the most beautiful shotgun ever produced, the Manufrance Ideal is presented here in its most exceptional version: the “Ideal d’Art Type 356 Tir au Pigeon” model. This 1937 gun is fitted with chopper lump, five palms, “Hercules” hardened steel 30″ barrels, originally chambered 12-2¾” Gauge, choked Full / Full. The specificity of their chopper lump dovetail assembly is typical of the high-end manufacture of Manufrance. The rollers on the cartridge extractors, the sliding ejectors and the 1st articulated trigger bear witness to the meticulous care taken in manufacturing. The system is equipped with automatic double safety sears and no longer includes a conventional manual safety blocking the triggers.

The rounded action, finished in French gray, with special detonators and “Ace of Spades” reinforcements has been superbly engraved with an ornamentation mixing foliated chiseling and scrolls, an exceptional execution modestly signed BURELLIER in the left “Ace of Spades”.

The English type straight stock, made of beautiful French walnut, traditional stamp varnished, dispenses with the sling and the usual wood engravings, giving way here to a traditional flat checkering, as on the wood butt while the forend is locked by a Purdey type latch.

With a 14½” LOP this extraordinarily balanced side-by-side gun weights 6lb 15oz. This Ideal seems to have been sparely used, the locking remains tight and the barrel bores are perfectly glass smooth, without any alteration. No traces of disassembly have marked any screws and the tubes slow rust blue is the original one.
