Engraved Ithaca 3E Flues with 30 Inch Chain Damascus Barrels Made 1919
Engraved Ithaca 3E Flues with 30 Inch Chain Damascus Barrels Made 1919

Engraved Ithaca 3E Flues with 30 Inch Chain Damascus Barrels Made 1919:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are so proud to offer this fine example the classic American double made in Ithaca, New York. The Ithaca name has a very loyal following, and this example can show us why. This is the 3E grade, moving up the grade scale enough for some gorgeous walnut, truly unique game scene engraving, just as unique checkering patterns, and the icing on the cake is that she is fitted with 30 inch Chain Damascus barrels. This is a very striking firearm, and can get your attention from across the room. Even the top rib stands out, with its deep and distinctive machined matting. Made in the year of our Lord 1919, it does not look like it is 103 years old. The original blue is mostly strong, with some thinning at carry points and near the muzzle. The receiver bears sharp, high contrast engraving set against generous amounts of case color. The checkering is very good, and the Damascus pattern is just as bold as the rest of the gun. From the large ivory bead to the original Ithaca butt plate, this shotgun screams high grade American double. The lever resides to the right of center, ejectors toss the empties, and she is choked old school, full and full. Built for the long run, she weighs in at just under 7 1/2 pounds. Drops are 1 5/8 and 2 3/4 inches, with an LOP of 14 inches. Chambers are 2 3/4 inches, and RST loads can allow this beauty to keep knocking down birds for years to come. This fine double represents a true bargain in this category. While you can spend many times this amount for a high grade double, they won’t get any more attention in front of your safe than this Fluesy. If you have been looking for the right classic Ithaca to collect, for investment, or for a classy hunt, then look no further. Price: $2800

ITHACA GRADE 4E FLUES MODEL SxS 20 gauge, 28" bbls
ITHACA GRADE 4E FLUES MODEL SxS 20 gauge, 28″ bbls

The Ithaca Flues is one of my favorite American doubles. While these SxSs aren’t as highly regarded as Foxes or Parkers, there’s something about them that appeals to me. Judging by the success of the model, there was something about them that appealed to other people, too.

The Ithaca Flues was one of the most popular SxSs ever made in America. Available from 1908 to 1925, around 223,000 of these shotguns were built. An American gunsmith named Emil Flues came up with  the design and Ithaca turned it into a simple, reliable double available at a pricel below other quality shotguns available at the time. Obviously, people thought they were a good deal.

Ithaca’s Flues came in five grades: 1, 2, 4, 6 & 7, The one you see here is a Grade 4 with ejectors (the “E” in 4E), and to my eye it features enough embellishment to be attactive without going over board looking pimped out

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED - EXCELLENT
ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED – EXCELLENT

I’ve always loved Ithaca’s Flues-grade SxSs. I don’t what it is about them, but every I see one, I get that urge to buy it — especially when I see one as nice as this.

The Flues was introduced in 1908 to 1926 when it was replaced by the NID.  Ithaca made a ton of them in that period — 223,000 — and it was certainly one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made in America.

Today, ones like this are great little grouse guns. Just be sure you shoot them with lightweight, low pressure shells.

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED - EXCELLENT
ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED – EXCELLENT

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED – EXCELLENTThis is a very unusual gun, in what I believe to be a factory fitted hard case from the period of manufacture – even though it does not have a factory label inside. This so called Flues Model Ithaca side by side is a 1&1/2 grade and so marked. Gun has 28 inch barrels with modified and full chokes, and plain extractors.  Barrels are like new in and out except for one small spot on the left barrel at breech which appears to be a rub mark from the case. Forearm is likewise like new.  Factory engraved receiver has just about all the case color with the exception of one small spot of pitting on top of the receiver to the right of the front of the toplever – hardly noticeable. Stock finish is original and excellent with slight bubbling – perhaps caused by heat in storage. Could easily be hand rubbed out to a wonderful finish – ditto for the forearm which has all the finish presently.  This gun and its wonderful case have definitely been in storage for many, many years and that is the reason it has most all of the original rust blue and vivid case colors. Even has the original Ithaca hard rubber buttplate.  Priced to sell quickly. Shipping will be $50.00 because of the weight of the hard case.  Price: $1,295

Ithaca Grade 4E 16 Gauge SxS Shotgun. FLUES, 97% FACTORY CASE COLOR, NICE!

Ithaca Grade 4E 16 Gauge SxS Shotgun. FLUES, 97% FACTORY CASE COLOR, NICEYear 1920, 16 Gauge, 7lbs 4oz. This gun, sn330025 built in 1920 is a great example, with 97% vivid factory case color, 92% factory barrel blue, 98% factory trigger guard blue, and near new highly figured factory finished wood with beautiful flor-de-lis checkering.  This is a HIGH CONDITION FACTORY ORIGINAL GUN.  Even the jewelling at the breech face is still evident.  The only thing that seems to be altered since the gun left the factory are the chokes, as the gun is stamped “4 & 4″ which would indicate F/F chokes.  The 28” barrels are presently choked IC/M (.007/.017) with their double ivory beads and mirror bores.  This is a gun for heavy work, with minimum wall thickness of 36 thousandths and weighing 7 1/4lbs.  What a great sporting clays gun or pheasant gun for heavy loads!  Engraved by the famous Joseph Loy, with his trademark signature, the gun is near new in all ways, including being tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun.  This is a single trigger gun that still has the ornate factory butt plate and great stock dimensions.  A great investment in an American treasure.  Price: $5,250

An awesome looking 12 gauge Ithace 3E Flues…

ITHACA 3E FLUES DAMASCUS EJECTOR 12 GAUGE
ITHACA 3E FLUES DAMASCUS EJECTOR 12 GAUGE

Ithaca’s Flues-model shotguns are far from the pretty side-by-sides I’ve ever seen. Clunky and as sleek as a shoe box, they don’t have the snakey look of a Fox or classic proportions of a Parker. But there is something about the Flues that I really like. Check out this 3E Flues you see her to see what I mean. With its damascus barrels, clouds of original color case hardening, and great engraving, it’s a handsome gun and one I would be proud to call my own.

Ithaca’s introduced their Flues model in 1908 as an update to their previous Minier-model side by sides. Ithaca made a ton of Flues — about 223,000 in all – before the design was replaced by the Ithaca NID.

An interesting Ithaca: a 12g Flues Grade 2 Pigeon gun…

Ithaca Grade 2 Flues 12ga SxS Pigeon Gun
Ithaca Grade 2 Flues 12ga SxS Pigeon Gun

I’ve seen a lot of Flues shotguns, but this is the first one I’ve seen like this. It’s a Grade 2 Ithaca Flues. The seller claims it’s a Pigeon Gun.

All I can say is “Perhaps”. With the its 32″ barrels, Full X Full chokes, and high, straight-gripped stock, I can’t imagine what else its owner was going to do with it – shoot ducks and geese? Maybe.

Ithaca’s Flues model SxS shotguns were introduced in 1908 and made until 1926. In all, about 223,000 of them were built – making the Flues one of the most popular double barrel shotguns ever made in America.

Here’s more about this 12 gauge from the seller:

Ithaca Grade 2 Flues 12ga Pigeon gun: 32″ Full & Full. Double triggers, Extractors. 40% cc. 85-90% blue. Straight grip. 14 1/8 LOP butt plate. 1 1/8 comb 2in heal. Excellent bores.  Price: $1,250

Wow: a real nice Ithaca Flues Grade 3E 20 gauge SxS…

Ithaca Flues Grade 3E 20 gauge Double Barrel Shotgun
Ithaca Flues Grade 3E 20 gauge Double Barrel Shotgun

A lot of side-by-side fans don’t know this, but up until World War 2, the Ithaca Gun Co. was one of the most successful shotguns makers in the US , and probably in the world.  The company made several different models of side-by-sides up until then, and the Flues was one of their most popular.

Introduced in 1908 and made until 1926 (when it was replaced by the NID)m  Ithaca made 223,000+ Flues shotguns. Of those, the one you see here has to be one of the rarest. Not only is it a graded 20 gauge, but it also has ejectors, 30″ barrel, and a ton of original condition.

It’s up for auction now on Gunbroker.com and the listing ends on 11/12/2013 @ 12:34:10 PM ET. You probably won’t see another one like it again, so if you like it, bid on it now. Here’s more about it from the seller:

Ithaca Flues Grade 3E 20 gauge Double Barrel Shotgun

The Ithaca Gun Co. used to be one of the biggest gunmakers in America. Up until the WW2, they turned out more SxS shotguns than any other maker in this country. The Flues model double was the company biggest seller. From 1908 to 1926,  Ithaca made 223,000 of them (Parker made 95,000 side-by-sides in the same period.)

A couple classics: Check out these vintage American Doubles…

If classic American doubles are your thing, here are two nice ones to check out. This first shotgun is a 12 gauge L.C. Smith No. 2. According the L.C. Smith Collector’s Association, “The No. 2 grade was nicely finished and engraved… and was said to be “just the kind for rough usage.” The Hunter Arms Company made 10,814 of them in 12 gauge, and the twelves are very common on the used market.

I’ve owned a few No. 2s over the years — a 12 gauge and two or three 16s. They were all solid, reliable shotguns. I still own one of the 16s — a real early one that’s a nice grouse gun. There’s another No. 2 that I’ve always wanted: a 16 gauge with a straight grip and double triggers. If you have one and you want to sell, drop me note. I would love to buy it.

Here’s more about the one pictured:

LC Smith Grade 2 – 12 GAUGE with ejectors and chain damascus barrels: Nicely figured stock with sharp checkering. Gun is tight on face. Ejectors are perfectly timed. Three position safety. Bores are excellent with right at .732 and 22/1000 choke (Imp Mod) and left at 31/1000 choke (full). Barrel length is 30″. Chambers are 2 3/4″. Weight of gun is 7 LBS 1/2 OZ. LOP – 14″. Drop at Heel – 2 3/8″. Price: $2,200

The next double is a 20g Ithaca Flues Grade 3. The Ithaca Flues was one of the country’s most popular doubles. But even though the company made 223,000 of them from 1908 to 1926, they didn’t make a whole lot of 20 gauge. They made even fewer of them in Grade 3 with 30′ barrels, so it’s safe to say that this is one very rare American side-by-side:

Full figured wood with perfect original butt place. Splinter forend with push-button release. Long, 30” barrels. Perfect upland gun. 14 ¼”  x 1 ¾”  X 2 7/8”. Price: $5,500.00

Wow – $1165 for that 16g Ithaca Flues…

So the hammer fell on this 16g Ithaca Flues shotgun I posted on Saturday. The final price? $1165! That’s a lot more than I thought this side-by-side would bring.

It’s also a good indication of the power of original condition. That’s what collectors want, and the more of it a gun has, the more they’ll pay.

So what do you think it’s worth?

That’s the question I hear all the time. When people ask me, I usually give them a range. That’s the best I can do. It’s also why auctions are so nice. When the hammer falls, you know what that item is worth (at least at that moment, with those buyers present).

Here’s a chance to see what a real nice 16 gauge Ithaca Flues is worth. Reliable and rugged, the Flues-model side-by-side was Ithaca’s most popular double. From 1908-1926 they made 200,000+ of them, making the Flues one these most popular side-by-side shotguns ever made in America.
