To quote Mr. Geoffrey Boothroyd “Few people would dispute that the most famous name in the history of British gunmaking is that of Manton”. Manton in this era called the 8, 10 & 12 bores as “Big Game” rifles; the 450, 500 & 577’s were called “Express Rifles” and the 400 & 470 as “High Velocity” rifles. Price: $39,000

Auguste Francotte 12 Gauge O/U Double Barrel Shotgun
Auguste Francotte 12 Gauge O/U Double Barrel Shotgun

Auguste Francotte 12 Gauge O/U Double Barrel ShotgunThis beautifully crafted Auguste Francotte 12 gauge Over/Under has deep engraving, nicely figured wood, Greener-type cross bolt, and auto ejectors.  It would be a fine addition to the gun cabinet of shooters or collectors of O/U shotguns, as it is a great example of the origins of what has become the most popular type of doublegun. The 28” barrels have 2-3/4” chambers and are choked Improved Modified (.025) in the lower barrel and Full (.030) in the upper barrel.  The wall thickness (right/left) for the lower barrel at 9” from muzzle is .035/.033 and at the middle of the barrel is .038/.036; the upper barrel is .035/.035 and .038/.038, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breach are .729/.729.  At some point in the gun’s history, the European-style sling mounts were removed from the lower barrel and stock. The stock and forearm are fine European walnut.  The drop at the comb is 1-1/2” and at the heel 2-1/4”.  Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the wood is 14-1/4”.  The butt of the stock is checkered.  The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to the right of center.  All serial numbers, 53774, match.  The wood is refreshed and the barrels are refinished.  Price: $2,000

He was very skilled as his patented O/U laid the ground work for the first Purdey O/U. Mr. Ernest Lawrence Sr. was the works manager at Purdey in 1924 and was approached by Mr. Atholl Purdey to build an O/U gun. Mr. Harry Lawrence was then in the factory and he drew from the ideas of Mr. Edwinson Green. He also patented a 3 barrel gun and built a round action nearly identical to the Dickson. Edwinson Green & Sons was still operating as late as 1983. Price: $27,000

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE
HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE in a H&H- EXC. PLUS BORES- EXC. GUN INSIDE & OUT: #19100, Holland & Holland Sidelock Royal Ejector 450 No. 2 Nitro Express Finished at the Factory on August 30, 1906. This gun is a new offering on the U. S. market in a very rare cartridge offering of the great 450 #2 chambering, It has 26″ Ejector Chopper Lump barrels with rib extension third bite, 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights, Fold-up night sight, London proof at 80 Cordite and 480 grain bullet, Bushed strikers, Double triggers with the front articulated, An extended top strap over the comb, Trapdoor grip cap with spare strikers and 2 spare front sights, Original LOP at 14 11/16″ over the original 1″ Silvers pad that is removable with plugs over the tiedown screws, Cast-off for the right hand, Proper weight of 10 lbs. 13 oz., The gun with 98% coverage of typical H&H Royal scroll, The frame retains 75% of original case colors, The breech face with 95% case colors, The inside forend metal with 99% case colors, The barrels have 96% original blue, The outside barrel striking is perfect, The buttstock re-oiled professionally and remains in 98% condition, The checkering remains at 96%, The bores are excellent plus and remain in super condition and for all intents and purposes look like they did over a 100 years ago, It is smack on the face, It has a Deluxe Oak & Leather brass cornered trunk case that is more modern than the gun and has a reproduced H&H trade label. This is flat out one nice 450 #2 Royal in a very rare chambering that is seldom ever seen or heard of in a H&H. Then top it all off; it has super bores, great condition, points like a dream with the proper cast-off and is offered in one of the greatest English cartridges of all time that shoots .458″ diameter bullets all day long. This is nice stuff here, most likely the only one of its kind on the world market. ////////////////////////////// Relative to the records from Holland & Holland, it was originally to be built as a 500/450 3 1/4″ nitro express. On the original build sheet it has a memo on June 12, 1906 that it was shot with Eley’s No. 2 nitro cartridge with 80 grs cordite and a 480 grain bullet. The gun is so marked and was proved accordingly. The length of pull on the build sheet is exactly as the gun measures to this day. Another memo on August 10, 1906 mentions fitting a spare Ivory front sight and it still is there in the trap grip cap and never installed. This piece remains almost exactly as it left H&H in August 1906. It was ordered by Fusils Guinard Armuriers in Paris and there is a very strong chance it never made it to India or Africa. Also, a very good chance that the First World War interupted the intended purpose or use of this gun and it remains to this day a very well kept piece. Price: $89,000

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls:  A very early Model 21 with double triggers, extractors and splinter forearm.  This 21 appears, in all regards, to be almost completely original and untouched.  The 32” barrels are chambered 2 3/4″ and choked Mod & Full: measuring Mod (.018) and Full (.035(; the bores are perfect and barrel blue retains over 95% original blue.  The frame has bright spots on the fences and on the bottom edges..otherwise the frame has 90-93% original blue.  The back of the top tang is bright and I think the trigger guard has been “freshened”.  The wood finish is original.  No major damage or cracks; just an assortment of 70+ years of handling; checkering is smooth in spots.  Butt plate is original and in great shape.  14” LOP, 1 9/16” DAC & 2 7/8” DAH.  Weighs 8 lbs. Good gun alert: 12 gauge Francotte hammergun, fluid steel barrels…

12 gauge Francotte Steel Barrel Hammergun, Floral Engraving
12 gauge Francotte Steel Barrel Hammergun, Floral Engraving

Francotte is one of my favorite gunmakers. In the 190+ years they were around, they made thousands and thousands of side-by-side shotguns from their factory in Leige, Belgium. Today, the ones we see more often are boxlocks like this. They were imported into the US by companies like Von Lengerke & Detmold and Abercrombie & Fitch.

The Francottes we rarely see are hammerguns like the one here – especially ones with fluid-steel barrels and straight grips. Hammerguns are a lot of fun to shoot, and every time I pick one of mine up I feel like I’m traveling back in time. If you would like to experience the same feeling yourself, this Francotte would be a great way to do it.

Good Gun Alert: a .410 Francotte with 30″ barrels and a long stock…

.410 Auguste Francotte Side-by-Side shotgun, 30" Barrels
.410 Auguste Francotte Side-by-Side shotgun, 30″ Barrels

The firm of Auguste Francotte & Cie made a ton of guns, pistols, rifles, and especially shotguns. The company started out around 1805 and by the end of the 19th century and up in to the 1950s, their shotguns were imported into this country by Schoverling Daly & Gales and then Abercrombie & Fitch. The shotguns these companies brought in ranged from plain, “Knockabout” models like this and went all the way to ultra-fancy examples like this sidelock .410.

They also brought in the one you see here. This one looks to me like a Grade 14E. Even though this one of the lower-grade boxlocks that Shoverling, Daly, & Gales imported, it was still a very well made shotgun. In it day it was probably as pricey as a higher grade Foxes L.C. Smiths. Here’s the rest of the info on it from the seller:

Good gun alert: nice looking 28 gauge side by side…

28 gauge Belgian Double Barrel Shotgun
28 gauge Belgian Double Barrel Shotgun

I’ve always wanted a 28-gauge shotgun. I’m not sure why. Twenty-eight gauge ammo is expensive, and light 20g loads are as effective (and cheaper). But when it comes to wanting something,  I usually don’t let things like sound reasoning and sense get in the way.

So if I had the money, I’m know I could talk myself into buying this Belgian 28 gauge. It looks like a quality gun, probably pre-WW2, and with a longish, straight-hand stock and 27″ bbls, I’m know I could make it work for me. In fact, I bet it would perfect for wooodcock, and I’ve heard that the 28 gauge is very versatile, so I bet I could carry it all season. And come to think of it, If I sold an old 16 gauge I could probably get it for nothing…

Original or redone? A 12g Francotte Knockabout side by side…

12g Francotte Knockabout Double Barrel Shotgun
12g Francotte Knockabout Double Barrel Shotgun

Old shotguns with tons of condition spook me. I love original condition, so I’m excited to see any vintage side-by-side that looks brand new. At the same time, I wonder if what I’m really looking at is an excellent restoration. Unless I have the double in my hands, it’s hard to tell.

So when I saw this 12 gauge Francotte Knockabout I was intrigued, but then put off. Part of me thinks that this side-by-side is all original. But another part says no ‘friggin way.

12g Francotte Knockabout Double Barrel Shotgun
12g Francotte Knockabout Double Barrel Shotgun

Up until they were purchased by Abercrombie & Fitch, Von Lengerke & Detmold was a major importer of Francotte shotguns. The Knockabout was the lowest grade they offered. Shotguns like this were bought by guys who wanted a quality double that they could really use. That’s why so most of the ones you see today look more like this one: decent, but definitely used.

12g Francotte Knockabout Double Barrel Shotgun
12g Francotte Knockabout Double Barrel Shotgun

The one shown here looks like it spent more time in a closet than in a marsh or field. For a shotgun that’s 85+ years old, it’s just not showing it’s age. That’s what worries me. Did the owner really buy it, shoot it for a couple years, and then put it away for a lifetime?

Or was it restored 20- 30 years ago by someone who knew what they were doing, and then used gently since then? I just can tell from these pics. I have seen brand new, honestly 100% original shotguns  that are even older. And those are the ones that keep me hoping to find more.

What do you think? Let me know.

Auction Alert: Fantastic Francotte 45Es at Julia’s, 10/2…

12 gauge Francotte 45E Eagle Grade Double Barrel Shotgun
12 gauge Francotte 45E Eagle Grade Double Barrel Shotgun

In 1875, Westley Richards introduced the Anson & Deeley double barrel shotgun and revolutionized side by sides. But even though an English firm invented the A&D action, I’ve always thought it was the Belgian and Prussian makers who perfected it .

One of these makers was Francotte. The Anson & Deeley doubles they made are some of the finest boxlock side-by-sides you can buy. Because of the crazy way people value things today, they’re also some of the best deals on the market.

20 gauge Francotte 45E Eagle Grade Double Barrel Shotgun

These three Francotte 45Es coming up at James Julia’s 10/2 auction are a great example of what I mean:

SCARCE FRANCOTTE 45e 28 GAUGE EAGLE GRADE GAME GUN WITH CASE

LIGHTWEIGHT FRANCOTTE 45e 20 GAUGE EAGLE GRADE GAME GUN

FINE FRANCOTTE 45e 12 GAUGE EAGLE GRADE GAME GUN

The 45E, or Eagle Grade, was the king of thebloxlock  Francottes imported by Von Lengerke & Detmold. Their signature features were  highly carved fences covered with game-scene & scroll engraving and a gold-inlaid eagle on the bottom of the action. On top of this, these guns were built with extras like intercepting safety sears, Greener-style crossbolts, replaceable hinge pins, side clips, and nicely figured European walnut. All the work on these side-by-sides was top notch, too.

28 gauge Francotte 45E Eagle Grade Double Barrel Shotgun
28 gauge Francotte 45E Eagle Grade Double Barrel Shotgun

Back when these Francotte 45Es were imported into this country, they were one of the most expensive boxlocks in Von Lengerke & Detmold’s store. Their price easily exceeded just about all the American doubles. The same was true with their quality. In fact, I think these Francottes beat them all. Today, people aren’t willing to pay the say premium for them. Most guys will put down more for a mid grade Parker than they would for any of these Eagles. That’s a shame because they will not be getting a better shotgun.
