Magnificently engraved, pristine Beretta S3EL 12 ga O/U sidelock from golden era (1956) with rare DT and ejectors in its factory case and cover

Magnificently engraved, pristine Beretta S3EL 12 ga O/U sidelock from golden era (1956) with rare DT and ejectors in its factory case and cover: What a fantastic, classic configuration, a time capsule from the late 1950s, almost as-new.  Profusely engraved best quality hand-made gun from Beretta’s best era of engraving and workmanship (by the then still working pre-war generation of gunmakers).  These guns were Beretta’s tops and then were mostly hand-crafted in a seperate facility out of special steels for the barrrels (very hard hi chromium content) and highest quality wood and engraving.  Beretta’s pre-1960s ‘S” sidelock design is far superior and more expensive to make than those on the later “S0″designated  guns and certainly superior than today’s “SOs”. Rennaissance Scroll engraved sidelocks, receiver and mounts (furniture) of Master Quality signed in small engraved letters “U.G.” just forward of trigger guard.  Rare double triggers, auto ejectors, cocking indicators, auto safety. All original and “about mint” with all the blue and coin finish. Straight grip fancy walnut and fine checkering with original finishes in perfect condition. 14 9/16 in LOP to checkered butt. 1 1/2 in and 2 in drops, cast-off for RH is 1/4, pitch= 6 in. Matching checkered game style forearm. Barrels are 28 3/8″ in with solid rib choked 27 pts lower (.027) and 38 pts upper (.038),  2 3/4 in chambers. Mint bores and in perfect working order. This gun just has not been used and is as tight as new. Weight is 7 lbs, 3 oz and balances 1/2 in in front of hinge pin, very dynamic handling. With original Beretta EL grade fitted luggage case and original canvas protective outer cover. I am also including at this pricea new Negrini leather case with a canvas protective cover ($650 value) which I store it in, to preserve the original for another 67 years!  Price: $12,950*

Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun
Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun

Westley Richards 12g and .500 BPE 562 Grade Cape Gun: Made between the two World Wars and remaining in remarkably high original condition. Westley Richards & Co. offered multi-barreled rifle and shotgun combination guns for much of the first half of the twentieth century. These were offered in two-barrel side by side “Cape Gun” configurations as well as three-barrel drillings. In a supplemental list from 1912 of items offered by Westley’s at the time, these guns were listed as: “…made in all bores, suitable for Indian, African, and Colonial sports. Special attention and care are given to the most essential features, viz:-durability, boring, fine cutting of the rifling, the fitting and adjustment of the sights, and regulation of the shooting. Every gun is guaranteed accurately sighted and shot.”.  This is a 562 Grade completed November 14, 1924 for Mahomedally Noorbhoy, Bombay.  The combination shotgun and rifle is built on an A&D fixed lock, non-ejector action with a Greener type crossbolt, listed in our ledgers as a “treble bite with tang lever”. The color hardened action has two triggers, automatic beetle back safety, and is absent any engraving save for the Maker’s name and an engraved thin-line border with “cut-away” fences.
The dovetailed lump, 28″ barrels are of Westley Richard’s Special Quality steel and bear the “Golden Triangle” trademark. The full-length matted rib has a slightly raised quarter rib, fitted with two folding leaves and a Tangent sight and a ramp front sight with a low profile brass beaded sight blade. The sight leaves are platinum lined and engraved (100, 200, 300-1,200 yds) respectively.  The barrel is also engraved: “Westley Richards & Co. Birmingham”, “562 Grade” and “.500 Express 3 Inch Case Black Powder”.  The walnut stock has a nice straight figure, a semi-pistol grip, and a 14 1/2″ LOP over a smooth steel butt. The splinter forend has a matching steel forend tip with a Deeley latch. The rifle is finished with traditional sling eyes and the stock oval remains blank. On the bottom of the buttstock, just behind the pistol grip, the wood is correctly stamped “Made in England”. Gun retains nearly all of it is original color hardening and it remains vivid still protected by the original lacquer. The stock and barrels remain equally well preserved, retaining nearly all the original oil finish on the stock and nearly all of the original barrel black. The bores remain perfect, in both the shotgun and rifled barrels and are dent and rust free and all original. These combination guns from Westley Richards are quite rare today in any condition. And this gun is in as nice a condition as any collector could ask for. But for a gun made to a price point and intended to be used in the World’s most demanding environments, the overall quality and handling of the gun is superb and to find it so well preserved, is nothing short of a miracle. Price: $15,000

Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address:
Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address:

Remington 1874 Whitmore ( SN # 19) 12 Ga. Shotgun, Early Engraved Barrel Address: This is the earliest Remington Whitmore Model 1874 I have ever seen. It has all matching serial numbers, #19. The original, engraved barrel address is truly a unique early feature. It is also engraved around the patent dates right in front of the lifter. The case hardening under the barrel on the frame and on the forearm steel is vivid. The case hardened locks and breech have turned a beautiful silver just like an old 1873 SAA. The 30-inch blued barrels go from blue to a thinning blue and plum color. The bores are in nice condition with a small amount of light pitting. This early hammer shotgun remains tight and the action is as solid as it was in 1874. The hammers cock crisply with a fine release on the triggers. The rebounding fire pins are just as crisp as the rest of the action. The buttstock is solid with no cracks but an inch and one-half above the steel butt plate there are two rack marks, one on each side (pictured) which are period usage. Fortunately, no one has ever tried to work on them. This is a beautiful and early American-made Remington cartridge shotgun that would stand proud in any fine Remington collection. Price: $1650

GREIFELT #1 PRE WAR O/U 20 GAUGE VL&D IMPORT
GREIFELT #1 PRE WAR O/U 20 GAUGE VL&D IMPORT

I love old, German OUs–especially smallbores. And the 20 gauge you see here really has my heart pumping.

Greifelt & Co used to be a major German gunmaker. Founded in 1885 in Suhl, the company went bust in 1945 at the end of WWII. In those 60 years, they exported shotguns and rifles throughout the world, including to Von Lengerke & Detmold (which was purchased by Abercrombie & Fitch in 1929).

GREIFELT #1 PRE WAR O/U 20 GAUGE VL&D IMPORT
GREIFELT #1 PRE WAR O/U 20 GAUGE VL&D IMPORT

This gun is typical of the German-style OUs that companies like VL&D imported into the US. It looks like it’s built on a Blitz-style triggerplate action with double Kersten locks. I love the engraving and the carving on the metalwork as well as the horn drop points on the stock. All very classy.

German over-unders like this were part of the first wave of the OU revolution that started in Europe and the UK before the first World War and then boomed in the US in the 1950s with the Browning Superposed.

Fox XE 16 Gauge – FACTORY ORIGINAL, MINT CONDITIONYear 1919, 16 Gauge, 5lbs 12oz, Side-by-Side: Serial Number 300,790. During the 20 years of chasing A.H. Fox guns of all grades and gauges for my personal collection and to assist my clients to build their collections, the Fox XE 16ga. has been one of the most difficult to find.  I have only seen 5 offered for sale in the last 10 years.  This fine example could be the very best XE 16 on Mother Earth, as it has all original factory finishes retaining 99% case color, blue, and wood finish.  Built in 1919, sn300790 is one of 90 factory-documented Fox XE guns built in 16ga., with only 79 of those the cherished Philly made guns.  Some of these guns have disappeared so it is likely there are less than 70 or so left in the world.  Of the 70, few have this much condition remaining and most have been significantly altered since leaving the factory.  I have examined this gun inside and out, and it is a near new, factory original gun.  The signature A.H. Fox case colors are not duplicated in today’s world. The engraving on this gun is exceptionally sharp and clear and from the prime era of Fox engraving. When you examine the order card you will notice it shows 3 ½” drop at the heel which is an error on the card as the gun has 2 ½” drop at heel and THE GUN MATCHES ALL OTHER DETAILS ON THE ORDER CARD including the long length of pull, gun weight, barrel weight and length.  Errors were made when handwriting order cards.  The gun came from the factory with the 2 ½” drop at heel.  The factory marked serial number is on the head of the stock as shown in the photos.  Weighing just 5lbs. 13oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin, you would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful A.H. Fox.  This gun has it all…rarity, high grade, incredible factory original condition, desirable features and stock dimensions, perfect mechanics, mirror bores, gorgeous wood figure, perfect screws…an A.H. Fox gun for the advanced collector or avid shooter/collector.  When you consider this is likely your only chance to own such a gun, it is a wise investment vehicle for your hard-earned funds at the price offered. Price: $27,950

Good gun alert: A great looking 12g Greifelt O/U …

Greifelt Over/Under German 12 ga Shotgun.
Greifelt Over/Under German 12 ga Shotgun.

Here is a fantastic shotgun. It’s a 12g Greifelt Grade No. 1 over under. This shotgun was built on a boxlock-style OU action, and it features Purdey-style underbites and a Kersten-style topbolt. It is incredibly well made.

Check out how fine the slots are on the pins in the action. Look at the checkering. Take a close look out the engraving. Now try to find that kind of quality on another gun priced at $2499.99.

Firearms with stacked barrels have been around for hundred of years. But they did’t take off until German makers like Merkel and then London’s Boss & Co. started building them. I’m not sure when the first German-made OUs made it into the US, but I’m pretty sure Boss’s design could be ordered through retailers here soon after the gun was patented in 1909.

Von Lengerke & Detmold in NYC imported Greifelt OUs in the 1920s. Back then, the Grade No. 1 was a $400 gun and a Parker BHE cost around $330.00. Stoeger was imported Merkels at around the same time, and an outfit called Sloan’s was bringing in German-made OUs made built by Heym and Adamy.

If you have an old German OU, please let me know. I love these guns, and I’m always on the lookout for them.
