A.H. Fox A Grade Pre-Savage 28″ Full/Mod 16 GA SXS Double Shotgun, 1921
Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28″ Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33
High quality doesn’t always equal high price. Case in point: I’ve always been amazed by how well-made pre-World War II German OUs are and how low their prices remain.
It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the online auction listing ends Sunday, 10/2/2022 @ 8:25 PM EST.
Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28″ Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33
F.W. Heym was founded in Suhl, Germany, in July 1865. The company is still around today. They built this shotgun in the 1920s. It features a Merkel-style triggerplate action, sideplates, ejectors, and 28″ barrels with a full-length vent rib. It also has original 2 3/4″ chambers.
Back in the ’20s, this shotgun was one of the highest-grade F.W. Heyms imported into the US. It was expensive and costs about as much as Paker BHE SxS.
I’ve shot fancy British OUs that cost 10x-12x more than guns like this Heym. Are those Purdeys and Woodwards 10x-12x better? I didn’t think so.

Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Grade No 9D 16 Ga 28″ Over/Under Shotgun 1919-33
Choke: The top barrel has a Full choke and the bottom barrel has a Improved Modified Choke. Both chokes are fixed.
Action Type: Over/Under Hammerless Top-Break Shotgun with a Barrel Selector and Ejectors
Markings: The receiver is covered in floral scroll engravings and on the bottom is marked “FR. WILH. HEYM, SUHL / GERMANY”. The top of the receiver, obscured by the barrel when it is in the down position, is marked with two Weimar-era proof marks (a German Eagle and a crowned “U” which was a definitive proof) above Germany on the right side and features the serial number on the right “5805AH”. The belly features a medallion marked “G.P.” The upper left portion of the top barrel, concealed by the side panel, is marked “ROECHLING”, “GTC” inside an oval, “ELEKTROSTAHL”, and has faded German proof marks concealed by a wood side panel (an eagle next to “NITRO” which was a nitro proof, two faded eagles, a corwned “U” definitive proof, “16” inside an oval which was the gauge designation and some marks that are no longer legible). The bottom barrel, visible when the forend is removed, is marked “ROECHLING”, “GTC” inside an oval and “ELEKTROSTAHL”. The bottom of the lower barrel is serial matched. The left rear portion of the upper barrel, which is visible when the gun is fully assembled, is marked “NEW-YORK”, “GRADE No 9 D” and Nitro next to a faded mark. The right rear portion of the upper barrel, which is visible when the gun is fully assembled, is marked “SLOANS SPORTING GOODS Co INC”. The forend iron is serial matched.
Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a red bead and there is a red colored bead about half way down the rib.
Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The stock is 4 piece wood featuring a checkered detachable forend, two smooth wood side panels, a checkered semi-pistol grip with a engraved metal cap, a fluted straight comb, a medallion on the belly and a textured black synthetic butt-plate. The stock has some light handling marks, nicks and scuffs. Notably, there is a tiny crack at the tip of the top tang. The LOP is 14.5” from the trigger to the rear of the butt-plate. The drops are approximately 1.75” and 2.5” inches from the comb and heel respectively. The butt-plate has some light handling marks. Overall, the stock is in Very Good-Fine condition.
Type of Finish: Blue and Case Color
Bore Condition: The bores are mostly bright with some light erosion concentrated around the muzzles.
Overall Condition: The shotgun retains about 65% of its metal finish. There are some light-moderate handling marks, nicks and scuffs. Notably, the case-colored receiver’s finish has largely worn off, with some surviving finish on the top tang, concealed by the barrel and on the sides. The barrels have a patch of moderate finish loss on the forward left side, light wear around the leading edges and some light wear around the muzzles. Some of the markings have faded but most remain clear. The screwheads are lightly tooled and remain serviceable. Overall, the shotgun is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrels lock with no play on the frame. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: Friedrich Wilhelm Heym was a Suhl based industrialist who founded his namesake company in mid 1865. The company is most famous for the shotguns and rifles it has produced. The company primarily exported its goods to the Russian Empire before shifting its focus to the United States around the time WWI broke out (Germany and Russia went to war in 1914). Ironically, Germany would end up fighting the United States as well in 1917. Despite this, when WWI ended the company continued to export arms to the U.S., primarily exporting shotguns and drillings. The company survived WWII and remains in operation today.
This particular specimen is an over/under shotgun, designated the Grade No. 9D, which was made during the Weimar-era based on the proof marks. The gun has some handling wear but it retains its beautiful engravings and is still mechanically sound. The gun should make a wonderful addition to any collection. Good luck on your bid!
Superb Charles Boswell 410ga O/U Pinless sidelock – Truly a bespoke gun in every regard! Long barrels with superb dimensions
Superb Charles Boswell 410ga O/U Pinless sidelock – Truly a bespoke gun in every regard! Long barrels with superb dimensions: This gun made in 2007, after Chris Batha obtained the rights to the Charles Boswell name in 2004, to make bespoke best quality guns under this name, with prices starting at $85,000.00. This beautifully filed, fitted, and finished creation of functional art by many Purdey and Holland trained gunmakers (Gerry Swanson, finisher) would certainly be well in excess of that number. This gun has 30 – 1/4″ demi bloc barrels fitted with solid matted rib. Left side of top barrel is engraved “Charles Boswell London.” Breech end of top barrel and ejector bolsters are scroll engraved. Flat of bottom barrel is stamped with 2007 London nitro proofs for 3″ chambers. Serial number is engraved on bottom barrel. Beautifully sculpted small sized over/under action fitted with pinless sidelocks is somewhat rounded with nicely filed beads. Action features non-automatic safety and gold plated non-selective single trigger and is engraved with near full coverage well cut rose and scroll by noted ex-Purdey engraver Dave Tallet. (Signature on trigger plate) “Charles Boswell” is in gold diagonally across front portions of lockplates, and also in arched banner on bottom of action over “London”. Blued single beaded small bow trigger guard with matching scroll has serial number in gold on tang. Well marbled and figured European walnut straight grip buttstock with checkered wood butt with engraved steel heel and toe plates. Classic drop points are behind lockplates, and well cut semi flat top point pattern checkering is at grip. A silver oval engraved “CW” is on toe line. Matching slim one piece ejector forend has Anson type release. Gun is housed in a best quality oak and brown leather case by Ian Tomlin, has gold canvas brown leather trimmed outer cover. Case is lined in burgundy cloth and has Boswell paper label in lid. Tops of case partitions are also of oak, and case contains Boswell marked square oil bottle and snap caps. Two piece cleaning rod is still in its original wrapper. Cleaning brushes are in black leather case. Price: $47,500

CHARLES DALY EMPIRE GRADE OVER UNDER 12GA

The top of the rib is imprinted “Charles Daly Empire Quality.”
This is an outstanding Prussian Daly from the pre-war era. All of the metal including the trigger guard, operating lever, tang, forend hardware and the grip cap are profusely covered in acanthus leaf scroll engraving. This same scroll surrounds game scenes on the receiver of pointing dogs on the left, a covey of quail on the right and ducks on the bottom. The metal exhibits a mottled tarnished pewter and smokey grey patina which adds to the original deep relief engraving and makes it more appealing now, than decades ago when first created.
Dark, dark Turkish walnut was selected for the pistol grip stock and three piece forearm. Truly outstanding fler-de-lis checkering is generously spread over the grip surfaces. A narrow wedge of horn is inlaid at the tip of the forearm and the gold inset oval in the toeline has yet to be initialed. The barrels retail 95% of their blue, the bores are bright & excellent and the wood has seen exceptional care. This gun may be better now that when it was made. Price:$12,500

Here is a fantastic shotgun. It’s a 12g Greifelt Grade No. 1 over under. This shotgun was built on a boxlock-style OU action, and it features Purdey-style underbites and a Kersten-style topbolt. It is incredibly well made.
Check out how fine the slots are on the pins in the action. Look at the checkering. Take a close look out the engraving. Now try to find that kind of quality on another gun priced at $2499.99.
Firearms with stacked barrels have been around for hundred of years. But they did’t take off until German makers like Merkel and then London’s Boss & Co. started building them. I’m not sure when the first German-made OUs made it into the US, but I’m pretty sure Boss’s design could be ordered through retailers here soon after the gun was patented in 1909.
Greifelt Over/Under German 12 ga Shotgun.
Von Lengerke & Detmold in NYC imported Greifelt OUs in the 1920s. Back then, the Grade No. 1 was a $400 gun and a Parker BHE cost around $330.00. Stoeger was imported Merkels at around the same time, and an outfit called Sloan’s was bringing in German-made OUs made built by Heym and Adamy.
If you have an old German OU, please let me know. I love these guns, and I’m always on the lookout for them.

Here’s a beautiful, high-quality shotgun you rarely see: It’s a 12 gauge Charles Daly O/U made in Prussia by F. W. Heym. It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the online auctions ends on Sat, 10/18/2014, @ 12:46:55 AM ET.
Charles Daly was an importer, not a maker, and his company had doubles built in Europe for the American market. Charles Daly side-by-sides are famous for their high quality, and this O/U looks like it’s just as well made. It’s a boxlock with sideplates. It was built in the 1920s, right when Charles Daly first offered O/Us. In its day, it was a very expensive shotgun — $500. At the same time, you could buy a Charles Daly Diamond Quality side-by-side for $450, an A.H. Fox DE for $256.60, and Parker CHE for around $220.
Charles Daly Prussian O/U 12 Gauge – F.W. Heym: This Charles Daly Prussian O/U 12 Gauge has been owned by the same family since its original purchase and is in very good condition. The pictures speak for themselves and I will answer any questions to the best of my ability. The length of pull is 14.5″ from front trigger to end of recoil pad, and 13.5″ from the rear trigger to end of recoil pad. (Correction) Barrels are 28″. Weight is 7 lbs. (Analog scale so this isn’t exact). Gun features shell extractors and safety lever. Choke is tapered, with bore diameter at muzzle being 18mm (perhaps just a hair under).
The Anson & Deeley shotgun action was huge turning point in breech loading, double barrel shotguns. Patented in 1875, it was an elegant design, simple to make and reliable in the field. That’s why so many makers have borrowed for their shotguns over the last 125 years.
Of all these makers, the Germans and Prussian may have done the most to make the A & D action their own. With shotguns like this Lindner-made, Charles Daly Diamond-grade and this J.P. Sauer Deluxe grades like this, Anson & Deeley’s original ideas were retained. But the style and refinement of the action was pushed to a new level.
F.W. Heym is another German maker who did a lot to refine the Anson & Deeley’s boxlock, and in the .410 side-by-side shown here, you can see how they turned the prosaic into something special.
Founded by Friedrich Wilhelm Heym in July 1865, the company is still around today. Back before World War II, a lot of their side-by-side and over-under shotguns were made for this country and imported into the US by Sloan’s Sporting Goods. The double you see here was retailed through Sloan’s NYC store, and I’m sure it was a pricey shotgun in its day. As you can see, it still is expensive. But given it’s quality, condition, and configuration, I bet it won’t be around for long.
F.W. Heym, Pre War, SXS , 410 Bore: Boxlock ejector with sideplates. Made in 1928 and imported by Sloan’s Sporting Good, NY. 28″, IC & MOD, 3″ chambers, double triggers, ejectors. Excellent plus original condition. 5LB 7 OZ. 2 1/2 X 1 1/2 X 14 3/4. Price: $22,500.00
I’m always amazed by the doubles people have squirreled. Judging by the condition of this 16 gauge over/under, this F.W. Heym has been hiding under some bed, or in some back closet, most its life.
16 gauge F.W. Heym over/under shotgun
F.W. Heym was a German gunmaker founded by Friedrich Wilhelm Heym in July 1865. This shotgun was sold through the Sloan’s Sporting Goods back in the roaring ’20s. Sloan’s used to be a big player in the fine firearms world. They had a store in NYC and Ridgefield, CT, and back when this o/u was bought, it was probably just another one of the fine doubles on the shop’s racks.
The shotgun itself is a mid-grade boxlock ejector with sideplates. The scrollwork is very well done, even though there isn’t all that much of it. I think the single trigger is original. The gun locks up on the Kersten-style system and I bet it closes with a bold KERCHUNK! Judging by the serial number, I think it was made around 1924.
A few things I love about this gun:
-The wood. It looks like real French walnut.
-The horn inlays on the stock.
-Its 28″ barrels.
-All its original condition. Not many shotguns make it past their 80th birthday that way. Fortunately, this one has.
