1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **: This is a very special all-original Lefever / Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Ga. double-barrel shotgun made in 1938, complete with an original November of 1975-dated factory letter. One of only 150 made in .410 gauge, this extremely-cool and beautiful little double features a case-colored receiver, a factory gloss blue finish on the barrels, 26″ inch fluid-steel barrels choked “Modified” and “Full” with 3″ inch chambers, a checkered solid rib with a red front bead sight and an ivory mid-bead, automatic ejectors (special order), a single trigger (special order), a tang-mounted automatic safety, and a point-pattern checkered American Walnut stock set with a beavertail forearm and pistol-grip buttstock. The beavertail forearm has a push-button release and an ebony diamond inlay at the front edge, and the buttstock features a factory black pistol grip cap and a factory black serrated buttplate. While the original Lefever Arms of Syracuse, New York Discontinued operations in 1916, it was bought by the Ithaca Gun Company sometime shortly after. In 1921 Ithaca decided to use the Lefever name to brand a high-quality but lower-cost field gun they were manufacturing, calling it the Lefever Nitro Special. This allowed Ithaca to maintain the prestige of the Ithaca name but still produce a lower-cost shotgun. The Lefever Nitro Special was a big success for the company and by 1934 Ithaca decided to offer an “upgraded” version of the gun, calling it the Lefever “A” Grade. The “A” Grade guns would feature a color case-hardened frame with some minimal engraving, an improved checkered solid rib design, and a better grade of wood. Automatic ejectors and a single trigger could be special ordered on this model for an additional cost. The production run of the Lefever “A” Grade ran from 1934 until 1940, with a total of only 2,350 guns produced. Out of the 2,350 made, 1,000 were 12 Gauge, 600 were 16 Gauge, 600 were 20 Gauge, and only 150 were .410 Gauge. This particular example is serial number 301038 and is one of the 150 .410 Gauge guns made. It was shipped in 1938 to Herbert Hearn Hardware company in Cambridge, Maryland and is listed in their records as it sits now, as a 26″ inch gun choked “Modified” and “Full” with ejectors and a single trigger. A quick internet search turns up some old pictures of the Hearn building when it was still in business as well as some pictures of what remains of the building today (which was being restored as of 2017). As you can see from the pictures, this very handsome little Lefever has been used but not abused. All of the finish that remains on this shotgun is original, and it has not been altered or “improved” in any way. It is a very classy double with lots of original gloss blue showing on the barrels and patches of case colors still showing on the receiver, particularly in the protected areas. The factory stampings of “Lefever Arms, Branch Ithaca Gun Co. Inc. Ithaca, N.Y.” and “LEFEVER A GRADE” on the top of the chambers is still clear and legible. All of the serial numbered parts are matching and original, including the forearm metal, receiver, and barrels. The stock set is stamped with the serial number as well, with the beavertail forearm stamped on the underside between the barrel channels and the buttstock stamped under the tang of the triggerguard. The bores in the 26″ inch barrels are perfect and mirror-bright. They are free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or damage of any kind. The stock set on this Lefever is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. All of the factory stock hardware is intact and nothing has been modified. The checkered panels on the wrist and forearm are still clean and show only light wear. This “A” Grade Lefever has a perfect, tight lock-up, and is perfectly “on face” with no wiggle or slop. The single trigger, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety all work perfectly. We have no doubt that this Lefever will function just as well today as the day it left the factory, and should do so for many more decades. If you have been looking for a classy and collectible American-made vintage .410 double, this is your chance to get one of the rarest we have had in decades. This Lefever Ithaca should not only be an excellent field gun that you can enjoy shooting, but an excellent long-term investment as well. There can’t be too many of the original 150 .410’s made that are still floating around out there in original condition, much less with special order automatic ejectors and a single trigger like this one! Ithaca 7E Double Barrel SxS Shotgun, 12 Gauge: This is the first 7E Grade Ithaca we have ever seen, which is understandable since there were only 22 or 25 ever manufactured. According to Walter C. Snyder, an Historian of the Ithaca Gun Company, this shotgun was shipped to an undisclosed location on 12/5/44. The condition is superb, as one might expect from such a high grade shotgun, it shows almost no wear or evidence of use. The blue and case-colors are near 100%, the bores are perfect and the highly figured American Walnut stock is ornately checkered and is in near new condition. It appears that the only non-original part is a proper “sunburst” Ithaca marked reproduction recoil pad. The case hardened receiver is highly engraved and has six gold inlays including 2 ducks, 2 pheasants, a dog holding a duck and a bald eagle complete with a white gold head. The shotgun is fitted with ejectors, double gold plated triggers, and the barrels are 28 inches in length, choked full and full (0040″ + .0040″). The stock dimensions are: 14 inch length-of-pull, 2 3/4 inch drop at the heel and 1 3/4 inch drop at the comb. The weight is 7 lbs. 13 oz. The 7E Grade Ithaca is one of the rarest of all American Doubles and it would be hard to find a better one. Comes with a letter from the Chronicler of the Ithaca Gun Company dated 9/5/07. A.H. Fox XE, SxS Shotgun, Two Barrel Set: This is an A.H. Fox XE 12 gauge shotgun, with a 2nd barrel set fit by Turnbull Restoration. This classic American double gun carries serial number 29317, and is dated from 1924. The Fox has been utilized by its owner since restoration, so it does carry some handling marks. This Fox’s original barrel set is 28″ in length. A 2nd barrel set at 26″ was fit by Turnbull Restoration and engraved to match the original set. Wood condition is very good with minor handling marks. We did not work on this Fox’s wood, and appears to have been refinished by a 3rd party at some point. CHURCHILL PREMIER QUALITY OVER UNDER DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUNS PAIR: BOTH GUNS ARE THE SAME DIMENSIONS, 28″ SOLID RIB, CHOKED .007″ AND .014″ with 2 3/4″ CHAMBERS, DOUBLE TRIGGERS, EJECTORS, FIELD FOREARM, PISTOL GRIP, CHECKERED BUTT MINT CONDITION MAKERS CASE, 7 LBS 4 0Z, DIMENSIONS: 2″ DAH,1 9/16″ DAC, 14 1/8″ LOP. Matched pair E.J. Churchill O/U The Premier Quality. 12 Bore game guns. Gun I made in 1926, Gun II Made in 1929. Serial Nr. 4220 was made for Abercrombie & Fitch and 3173 for a Mr. Wilson in San Francisco. They were both originally pigeon guns with 32” barrels. They were matched up as a pair and re-barreled to 28” through Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang, and Don Masters chocked IC/M and probably restocked by the maker, work which was done for a Danish nobleman whose coat of arms are on the escutcheon. Both guns have a full London proof. The actions of these guns are exact copies of the Woodward O&U actions, and were made by the firm of Hills, who also made the actions for Woodward. It was said at the time that Woodward built the Over & Under guns for Bob Churchill. This may be indeed true, but it is not likely, I believe Hill did all the actioning and in addition, they both used the same outworkers. A marked difference is the ejector system, which differs from Woodward and shows the Churchill input, as Bob Churchill felt it needed improvement. In total only 15 Over & Under guns were built by Churchill before WWII, of which this pair is believed to be in the best condition of those remaining. One of these guns is pictured in the book “The House of Churchill” by Don Masters. Price:$46,500

I’m a fanatic for old shotguns. That being said, I do realize modern SxSs and OUs have benefits: Perfected designs, suitability with modern ammo, easier to fix, etc.
Of the modern stuff out there, I’ve always liked Ithaca/SKB side by sides. SKB is another of Japan’s famous gunmakers and Ithaca imported SxSs and OUs made by them from 1966-1977 or so. Well made and rugged, these guns are great deals when you find them today.
The one you see here is a 280. Introduced in ’71 as an English Field model, it was Ithaca/SKB’s “…excitingly new deluxe field gun…in the classic English style.” It’s built on a Anson& Deeley style boxlock action and features ejectors, chrome-lined barrels and hand checkering.
Priced at $249.95 when it first hit the market, it cost far less than Browning’s Superposeds, which started at $465.
RE: It’s the Ithaca/SKB/s 25″ barrels? Don’t fear ’em. For upland shooting, most your shots are quick pokes rather. So the short tubes won’t make a difference.
ITHACA SKB 280 20GA SIDE-BY-SIDE EXCELLENT: A very lightly used 20ga Ithaca/SKB. Very few hunting marks keep this gun from being 100%. It’s getting harder to find these guns in this kind of shape. Good to go, no issues, close to new. Price:$1850
Happy almost Thanksgiving. If you still need a bird to help you celebrate this very American holiday, here are three classic American doubles that can help you do it.
These guns are big and they were built to push a lot of lead. Any one would be great knocking down a monster turkey hunting for the table.

12Gauge, 9lbs 2oz, Side-by-Side, Serial Number: 31791. Those interested in long range shooting likely know of the Fox HE Grade or “SUPER FOX”, the most capable long-range gun made in America, or maybe in the world! There is a strong interest in these guns, made so by famous outdoor writer Nash Buckingham in the late 1920’s and in all of the stories written since. There were only about 950 of these guns manufactured, and most have been altered in ways that destroy their function and value, so an unmolested Super Fox is a rare find. The Super Fox performance is entirely dependent on the combination of the over-bored barrels, precise chambers, and special, long tapered chokes, all finely tuned by the famous barrel guru Bert Becker. This Super Fox, sn31791 shipped in 1927, has 32” barrels with factory 3” chambers, showing the correct .738 bore diameter and 4 ½” chokes tapering to a 49 (R) and 48 (L) thousandths constriction. Like most waterfowling guns, this Super Fox was used, but also well maintained, as it retains over 92% bold factory case color, 92% factory blue, 97% factory trigger guard blue, near perfect screws, excellent bores, no dents or dings, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, ejectors are super strong and well timed, mechanics are excellent, no cracks or repairs to the factory length wood that still retains the original finish and superb checkering, and there are the customary handling marks on the barrels and wood.
