Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25" bbls:
Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25″ bbls:

Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25″ bbls: You are looking at a rare and an unusual Purdey gun. Unlike this gun, most if not all “funeral” or “black” Purdey guns were sent out with the expectation that they will return to London to be finished per buyer’s taste. This gun was ordered in blued steel and gold lettering with minimal engraving. Copy of the Purdey dimension book entry for the gun and the actioner’s work order from Peter Nelson can be found in the pictures. Orginally a 2 1/2″ gun, the chambers were lengthened to 2 3/4″ (3 1/4 tons) and the gun re-proofed in London in 1986. Built on the Beesly action, this high condition self-opener ejector game gun sports 25″ barrels and an automatic safety. The gun was manufactured in 1964 and comes in its original Purdey lightweight leather motor case. Finished by Alan Dudley, stocked by Anthony Rule, barrels by Jack Aldous, and actioned by Peter Nelson. Price: $27,000*

Webley & Scott Model 720 20GA 26” English Made IN MAKERS CASE 6 Pounds!

Webley & Scott Model 720 20GA 26” English Made IN MAKERS CASE 6 Pounds! Up for sale is a very nice Webley & Scott Model 720, chambered in 20GA. This fine game gun comes housed in its original maker’s case with snap caps & rose wood cleaning rod. From the little research I have done, this was the 99th Webley to arrive in the US in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. The leather covered pad (Purdy Style) was replaced by Griffin & Howe at a cost of 750 dollars. The Action retains 98% case colors. The barrels are tight on face. The bluing on the barrels is about 95%, they do have a scratch in the finish towards the muzzle on the right barrel. The pictures show it well. The LOP from the front trigger is 14 ¾. Slight Cast Off. DAC 1 3/8. DAH 2 3/8. 26’’ Barrels with Fixed chokes of IC & Mod. Solid Game rib with mead bead. Pristine Bores & Chamber. 3’’ Chamber. Auto Ejectors. This tips the scale 6 pounds. Overall, this Webley remains in excellent condition, this has very good dimensions and is a desirable English Made double. The pictures tell the story. Price: $6,250*

1907 Parker A5 Quality BHE 12 Gauge Double Pigeon Gun w/ 30" Acme Steel Barrels ** Mod./Full **
1907 Parker A5 Quality BHE 12 Gauge Double Pigeon Gun w/ 30″ Acme Steel Barrels ** Mod./Full **

1907 Parker A5 Quality BHE 12 Gauge Double Pigeon Gun w/ 30″ Acme Steel Barrels ** Mod./Full **: This is a VERY classy and beautiful Parker Brothers “Quality A5” BHE 12 gauge double “Pigeon Gun” with 30″ inch “ACME” fluid steel barrels choked “Full” and a tight “Modified”.  Built in 1907, this gun originally had a capped pistol-grip stock set according to the Parker book, but is now stocked with a straight-gripped and checkered American Walnut stock set that has been on the gun at least 30 years that we know of, and likely much, much longer.  When we acquired it the butt was fit with a white spacer and a collapsed rubber pad that was hard as a rock!  We had the white spacer removed and a new pad that looks period-correct installed in place of the collapsed hard one.  The length of pull was kept the same as it would have been if the old pad wasnt collapsed, at 14″ inches from the front trigger to the end of the pad.  The rest of this spectacular gun is in exactly the same configuration as the book says it was when it left the factory, a “Quality – A5″ BHE Grade on a size 2 frame with double triggers, ejectors, and 30” inch Acme steel barrels. As you can see from the pictures, this has some spectacular factory hand-cut engraving on it consisting of floral/scroll patterns.  You will notice that there is a panel on each side and the bottom of the receiver with particularly striking engraving with more relief than the engraving around them.  These side panels are round in shape and feature two types of flowers with 7 blooms in each one.  The panel on the bottom is rectangular and is also a floral pattern, with two types of blooms and 5 total flowers surrounded by leaves.  The remainder of the engraving is made up of intricate scroll designs and some classic patterns and detail work.  The receiver still shows some faint case colors in some areas, with the protected areas having much more vivid colors.  Where there are no case colors showing on the receiver it is a very pleasing light gray color. The receiver as a whole has a very uniform patina to it, with no blotches or areas that look out of place.  The gloss blue finish on the barrels, the lower tang, the forearm hardware, and the triggerguard is handsome and bright, showing only minor wear and handling marks.  There are no eyesores or bad spots that stand-out.  All of the screws are original and in good shape, with many “timed” together and only a few that have a little marring of the slot.  All of the markings on this gun outside of the engraving are 100% legible, crisp and clear, including the water tables.  The face of the receiver is in excellent condition, with no damage to the firing pin holes and no circular primer ring erosion visible. This Parker never had a safety, as you can see the upper tang is solid and not plugged.  This is very common for a gun made for live pigeons as these competitive shoots generally are “no alibi”, meaning you do not get another chance to shoot for forgetting to take off the safety, or a safety malfunction. The barrels on this beautiful Parker are 30″ inches with a solid rib, ejectors, and 2.75″ chambers.  We measured the constriction and the barrels are choked at the very tightest end of “Modified” and a normal “Full”.  The bores in both barrels are clean and bright with no dents, bulges, pitting, or defects of any kind.  The checkered Walnut stock set is in very good condition and quite attractive.  It shows some very nice dark figure in it, and the checkering still looks sharp. Both the forearm and buttstock are free from any major damage, cracks, chips, or repairs.  Both parts are nice and tight to the gun with no wiggle, and the joints between metal and wood are tight.  This double is in perfect working order, and the barrels are perfecty on-face and lock up rock-solid to the receiver.  Price: $12,250*

This gun remains in very stout excellent condition as it lived a life in the U. S. and not in the jungles of India where many English sporting guns got the hell beat out of them. Granted its life was America but this is dreams of tigers, ships, and palaces, fine spices and women and silk. Colonel Fosbery’s patent #7568 of June 20, 1885, was intended to make a gun capable of being fired either with shot, ball, or conical bullet. Holland & Holland gave the rifled chokebore its name, “Paradox”. Back in the day, Paradox meant “That which is contrary to received opinion; strange, but true”. H&H wanted 100-yard performance that duplicated the Express rifle at that time, and still have a gun that gave very good shot patterns. The Paradox will pattern from cylinder to improved cylinder chokes. H&H built a total of 1,463 Paradox guns, I am certain William Evans London shop built few. Price: $19,500

Best Quality Louis Brancquaert #5 Hammer 12 gauge sidelock pigeon gun with 30″ Chopper lump fluid steel barrels

Best Quality Louis Brancquaert #5 Hammer 12 gauge sidelock pigeon gun with 30″ Chopper lump fluid steel barrels: Full coverage banknote scroll with Brancquaert marking on bottom of frame, probably executed by H. Corombelle, the top Belgian engraver in this time period(1900-1910). Hidden Purdey style third fastener, sideclips, figured French walnut with no splits or cracks, original 2 5/8″ chambers, perfect bores that mike Left: .726, MWT= .028, choke=. .031″ Right: .726, MWT= .029″, choke=. 020″. Wall thickness 9″ Left= .042″ Right= .044″. Weight of gun is 7lbs. 5 ozs. Stock dimensions are 14″ LOP to a checkered butt over a  piece of walnut added to change pitch., 1 3/4″ DAC, 1 7/8″ DAH, with 3/8″ cast off for the right hand. My guess is that it may have been originally built for a woman, hence the odd original pitch. SN is 908.974. DeFourney built these guns for Brancquaert and the SN reflects this fact. The bluing appears original as barrel lettering is very sharp and there is fading case color on action, but metal is very clean and engraving sharp. Hammers are the late style low profile used on the post 1900 guns. This is a very seldom seen best quality hammer model built at the tail end of the live pigeon era. Price: $7,650*

Lot 51: RARE AND ICONIC L.C. SMITH A-3 GRADE 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN ILLUSTRATED PROFUSELY IN LT. COL WM BROPHY’S “L.C. SMITH SHOTGUNS” BOOK: SN. 205157. The A3 Grade was introduced to the line in 1895 as “The finest gun in the world for the money”. It was the highest grade L.C. Smith until the grade designations were changed in 1913. Made in 1906 with 30” Whitworth Fluid steel bbls, 2-3/4” chambers, matted concave rib and bbl extension with red mid and ivory front bead. Muzzles are nicely crowned and have bands of engraving as well as 1” scroll wedges. Breech ends of bbls have 2-1/2” wedges of scroll on tops and gold inlaid lightning bolts running through each and are hand engraved “Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel” / “Made to Order By the Hunter Arms Co. Fulton, NY”. Later factory replacement type-2 beavertail forend is finely checkered with fleur-de-lis ribbon at center and fully engraved banjo type roll release and sculptured iron. Inside of forend iron is hand engraved with scrollwork, SN and 1901 Lewis Ejector patent info. Bbl flats are nicely engine turned with hand engraved SN, bottom of tubes w/original Whitworth trademark stamps and forend lug stamped “A 3”. Masterfully engraved case hardened sidelock action is most certainly the work of Albert E. Kraus, employed from 1890-1945.

Lot 51: RARE AND ICONIC L.C. SMITH A-3 GRADE 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN ILLUSTRATED PROFUSELY IN LT. COL WM BROPHY’S “L.C. SMITH SHOTGUNS” BOOK

Lockplates are extensively engraved in intricate foliate scrollwork and hidden game scenes with a relief engraved Setter in an oval panel on left plate, relief Pointer in panel on right, and “L.C.Smith ” in a crescent forward of the lock pin on each side. Receiver body has similar foliate scroll engraving interspersed w/ bouquet flourishes and bas-relief vine and scrollwork at the fences. The classic Setter with fallen quail on trigger plate, synonymous with the L.C.Smith brand, is beautifully executed. Blued trigger guard is rose and scroll engraved with hand-cut SN at tang. Auto ejectors, “Hunter One -Trigger”, non-auto safety. Gold inlaid “S” in front of flat safety slide.

Lot 51: RARE AND ICONIC L.C. SMITH A-3 GRADE 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN ILLUSTRATED PROFUSELY IN LT. COL WM BROPHY’S “L.C. SMITH SHOTGUNS” BOOK

Beautiful straight-hand buttstock of richly figured dark-streaked European walnut is finely checkered with fleur-de-lis and ribbon patterns terminating with an aging “No-Shoc” pad. Buttstock and forend are most certainly a period of use factory replacements (post-1920) and have been on the gun for much of its lifetime.

CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain 90% of their factory restored blue, engraving slightly softened and a few small rubs on right tube towards the muzzle. Receiver retains 40%+ of its original case color. Factory replacement stock and forend are sound with minor handling marks and retain most of their rubbed finish. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are crisp, trigger works well and ejectors are in time. This is an exceedingly rare gun and opportunity to acquire one of the most recognised and published A-3 Grades extant!

Lot 51: RARE AND ICONIC L.C. SMITH A-3 GRADE 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN ILLUSTRATED PROFUSELY IN LT. COL WM BROPHY’S “L.C. SMITH SHOTGUNS” BOOK

This exact gun is illustrated in ‘L.C.Smith Shotguns, LTC Wm S. Brophy, 1983 on the cover and pp 21, 47-49, 164-169, 187-188. Accompanied by a L.C.Smith Collectors Association research letter dated January 28, 2022, identifying this gun as being finished January 22, 1906 as one of only 17 twelve gauge guns total. No stock configuration nor shipping info is recorded but there is a notation “McR” at the margin of the ledger for this entry and likely indicates the owner at one time. Also accompanied by archival A & F records, kindly supplied by Griffin & Howe Research, indicating the gun, in its current configuration, was consigned to them by E.A.Thorne in 1960 and sold to H. Gordon Moore in 1961. Harry Gordon Moore, Jr. resided much of his adult life in Lynchburg VA. Mr. Moore was also the author of “Trigger Pullers: An Attempt to Convey the Art of Wingshooting,1976” a compendium of Moore’s articles on gamebird shooting, first published in Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, and The Shooter’s Bible. Note: Moore and Brophy were certainly literary colleagues in the Sporting Fraternity and a friendly loan of the A3 for Brophy’s book is probable. Charlie Hunter spent his lifetime in and around the Staunton – Lynchburg area and was undoubtedly well-acquainted with fellow sportsman Moore. Hunter likely acquired this gun from Moore directly or from his estate after his passing in 1992.

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:
Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore: An excellent little Webley & Scott Model 728, a 28 bore double box lock ejector with 25″ barrels choked 3/4 (improved modified) in the left tube and 1/4 (improved cylinder) in the right tube. There is extensive floral scroll engraving covering the action, bottom plate, trigger guard, toplever, and forearm hardware and “WEBLEY & SCOTT” on each side of the action. There is even a flourish of floral scroll engraving on the breach end of the rib. The right tube is engraved atop the breech end “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.” and the left tube is similarly engraved “SERVICE ARMAMENT CO, RIDGEFIELD, N.J., U.S.A.” Mounted in a very nicely figured walnut stock with multi-point checkered forearm and English straight hand butt stock with teardrop flats, a vacant gold (I think) oval escutcheon at the toe and checkered butt. There are a few very small spots of finish loss and handling marks to the forearm. This dandy is ready to go in it’s original canvas covered takedown hard case complete with original trade label and all the original accessories including a pair of snap caps, an oil bottle, a two piece cleaning rod stored under the barrels, a wire brush, a patch swab, a mop, and a box of cleaning patches. Remarkable, also included is the original hang tag. This particular 728 appears to me to be a little better than usual with highly figured wood and a gold oval escutcheon near the toe. The butt is original too and hardly ever grounded as can be seen in the photos; so often these have been modified with a pad. The Model 728 is a fantastic little English hand made side-by-side gun, made before the days of mass produced CNC machined guns. This gun is slightly used – it bagged several quail and a pheasant in its one and only outing last season – but is in excellent although not quite perfect condition. The pictures tell the story. I think these guns are a great value and a good investment. I’ve seen them appreciate considerably on these pages even in just the last year. They aren’t bespoke guns but they do exhibit fine English craftsmanship. This 728 is a gun you can be proud of in any company but at a fraction of the cost of a bespoke gun. Price: $7,500*

Engraved Ithaca 3E Flues with 30 Inch Chain Damascus Barrels Made 1919
Engraved Ithaca 3E Flues with 30 Inch Chain Damascus Barrels Made 1919

Engraved Ithaca 3E Flues with 30 Inch Chain Damascus Barrels Made 1919:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are so proud to offer this fine example the classic American double made in Ithaca, New York. The Ithaca name has a very loyal following, and this example can show us why. This is the 3E grade, moving up the grade scale enough for some gorgeous walnut, truly unique game scene engraving, just as unique checkering patterns, and the icing on the cake is that she is fitted with 30 inch Chain Damascus barrels. This is a very striking firearm, and can get your attention from across the room. Even the top rib stands out, with its deep and distinctive machined matting. Made in the year of our Lord 1919, it does not look like it is 103 years old. The original blue is mostly strong, with some thinning at carry points and near the muzzle. The receiver bears sharp, high contrast engraving set against generous amounts of case color. The checkering is very good, and the Damascus pattern is just as bold as the rest of the gun. From the large ivory bead to the original Ithaca butt plate, this shotgun screams high grade American double. The lever resides to the right of center, ejectors toss the empties, and she is choked old school, full and full. Built for the long run, she weighs in at just under 7 1/2 pounds. Drops are 1 5/8 and 2 3/4 inches, with an LOP of 14 inches. Chambers are 2 3/4 inches, and RST loads can allow this beauty to keep knocking down birds for years to come. This fine double represents a true bargain in this category. While you can spend many times this amount for a high grade double, they won’t get any more attention in front of your safe than this Fluesy. If you have been looking for the right classic Ithaca to collect, for investment, or for a classy hunt, then look no further. Price: $2800

1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **

1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **: This is a very special all-original Lefever / Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Ga. double-barrel shotgun made in 1938, complete with an original November of 1975-dated factory letter.  One of only 150 made in .410 gauge, this extremely-cool and beautiful little double features a case-colored receiver, a factory gloss blue finish on the barrels, 26″ inch fluid-steel barrels choked “Modified” and “Full” with 3″ inch chambers, a checkered solid rib with a red front bead sight and an ivory mid-bead, automatic ejectors (special order), a single trigger (special order), a tang-mounted automatic safety, and a point-pattern checkered American Walnut stock set with a beavertail forearm and pistol-grip buttstock.  The beavertail forearm has a push-button release and an ebony diamond inlay at the front edge, and the buttstock features a factory black pistol grip cap and a factory black serrated buttplate. While the original Lefever Arms of Syracuse, New York Discontinued operations in 1916, it was bought by the Ithaca Gun Company sometime shortly after.  In 1921 Ithaca decided to use the Lefever name to brand a high-quality but lower-cost field gun they were manufacturing, calling it the Lefever Nitro Special.  This allowed Ithaca to maintain the prestige of the Ithaca name but still produce a lower-cost shotgun.  The Lefever Nitro Special was a big success for the company and by 1934 Ithaca decided to offer an “upgraded” version of the gun, calling it the Lefever “A” Grade.  The “A” Grade guns would feature a color case-hardened frame with some minimal engraving, an improved checkered solid rib design, and a better grade of wood.  Automatic ejectors and a single trigger could be special ordered on this model for an additional cost.  The production run of the Lefever “A” Grade ran from 1934 until 1940, with a total of only 2,350 guns produced.  Out of the 2,350 made, 1,000 were 12 Gauge, 600 were 16 Gauge, 600 were 20 Gauge, and only 150 were .410 Gauge.  This particular example is serial number 301038 and is one of the 150 .410 Gauge guns made.  It was shipped in 1938 to Herbert Hearn Hardware company in Cambridge, Maryland and is listed in their records as it sits now, as a 26″ inch gun choked “Modified” and “Full” with ejectors and a single trigger.  A quick internet search turns up some old pictures of the Hearn building when it was still in business as well as some pictures of what remains of the building today (which was being restored as of 2017).  As you can see from the pictures, this very handsome little Lefever has been used but not abused.  All of the finish that remains on this shotgun is original, and it has not been altered or “improved” in any way.  It is a very classy double with lots of original gloss blue showing on the barrels and patches of case colors still showing on the receiver, particularly in the protected areas.  The factory stampings of “Lefever Arms, Branch Ithaca Gun Co. Inc. Ithaca, N.Y.” and “LEFEVER A GRADE” on the top of the chambers is still clear and legible.  All of the serial numbered parts are matching and original, including the forearm metal, receiver, and barrels.  The stock set is stamped with the serial number as well, with the beavertail forearm stamped on the underside between the barrel channels and the buttstock stamped under the tang of the triggerguard.  The bores in the 26″ inch barrels are perfect and mirror-bright.  They are free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or damage of any kind.  The stock set on this Lefever is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  All of the factory stock hardware is intact and nothing has been modified.  The checkered panels on the wrist and forearm are still clean and show only light wear.  This “A” Grade Lefever has a perfect, tight lock-up, and is perfectly “on face” with no wiggle or slop.  The single trigger, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety all work perfectly.  We have no doubt that this Lefever will function just as well today as the day it left the factory, and should do so for many more decades.   If you have been looking for a classy and collectible American-made vintage .410 double, this is your chance to get one of the rarest we have had in decades.  This Lefever Ithaca should not only be an excellent field gun that you can enjoy shooting, but an excellent long-term investment as well.  There can’t be too many of the original 150 .410’s made that are still floating around out there in original condition, much less with special order automatic ejectors and a single trigger like this one! Price: $6,500

Scott “The Chatsworth” Model 20ga with case: Stunning and beautiful little 20ga gun made by W&C Scott.  Likely made in the late 1970’s, this gun with 27″ barrels, splinter forend with Anson push bottom release, straight grip buttstock which terminates in finely checkered butt, double triggers, and auto ejectors.  Beautifully engraved with case hardened action and blued trigger plate.  The stocks have a diamond shaping on both the forend and the butt.  The gun is lively and balances well.  Cased in a tan canvas case with original owners initials which are also in gold towards toe of the stock as seen in the photos. This gun is near mint and appears test fired only.  There are a couple of minor handling marks but overall the gun is near mint.  Case is excellent with some light fading.  Bores are brilliant and shiny and mechanics are crisp. H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun
H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun: For a few years H&H took what was essentially a best quality Birmingham boxlock similar to a W C Scott Bowood; added H&H improvements and extra finish to make the Cavalier.  Such upgrades as a removable hinge pin for future tightening capabilities, chopper lump barrels, higher grade wood and better finishes.  It is my understanding that H&H could never market/sell the Cavalier for enough money to cover their costs, so production stopped after three years for economic reasons. This is a Holland & Holland.  The 28” chopper lump barrels are finished in a dark rust blue and are fitted with a tapered, concave smooth solid rib and just a front silver bead.  The bore diameters are as stamped, .728” with the right barrel choked .010” (IC) and the left barrel choked .020” (Mod) and minimum wall thicknesses of .035” in each. The frame in nicely finished with original case colors retaining over 85% and a blued floor plate and blued trigger guard. The handsome walnut straight hand stock has a 15” LOP over and original ½” full leather recoil pad.  There is 1 3/8” DAC, 2 ¼” DAH and 14” right hand cast.  The splinter forearm is fitted with a Deeley release. This truly delightful game gun weighs 6 lbs. 5 oz., lively and balanced perfectly between the hands. The gun comes cased with H&H accessories. SN:  5002. Price: $8,475
