Stock is straight English, with 1 1/2 DAC, 2 3/8 DAH, and measuring 14 3/4 LOP over checkered butt. Slight cast off. Splinter forend with Anson push button release. Made with 28″ Carmen Fluid Steel barrels, checkered splinter forend, double triggers, extractors, and capped pistol grip buttstock with original Lefever Arms Co. monogrammed buttplate. Each sideplate with a flourish of scroll as is typically found on the H Grade guns. This gun remains in very nice condition. The barrels retain most of an older restored rust blue and bores are bright and shiny. There is evidence of an old repaired dent or two at the bottom of the left barrel about 16″ from the muzzle. The locks and top of the action retain more than 90% of their bold original case color. Bottom of frame has mostly toned to a pleasing gray. Stocks are sound with most of their original finish and only minor handling marks. Mechanics are crisp. PURDEY “LIGHTWEIGHT”, 12 gauge, 1937: This little Purdey is amazing. It is very close to the way it left the makers in 1937. It is safe to say that the blue and case color show at least 90% of their original glow. The barrels are 26″ with 2 5/8″ chambers, proofed for 1 1/8oz., choked cylinder and improved cylinder. Alfonso XIII of Spain, pigeon shooter & owner of many Purdeys

Provenance is tricky, especially when it comes to old guns. Some provenances can boost a shotgun’s value many times over, while other barely register at all with buyers.

Fo example: Would you pay $60,000 more for a shotgun made for King Alfonso XIII.

King who?

Yeah – that’s the problem. King Alfonso XIII was Spain’s monarch from 1886-1931. While he was a big deal in his day, I don’t know anyone who cares about him now. So it’s hard to say if a gun connected to him is worth a $60,000 premium.

That’s just what’s going on with the James Purdey & Sons 12g hammergun you see here. This side-by-side came up for sale in Christie’s, December 2014 sale:

It certainly is a spectacular shotgun, and it appears to be in excellent condition. Regardless, though, the big question is: Is its connection to a King worth sixty large?

“Purdey Hammer gun sn. 19395 came from a collection of Spanish Royal Firearms, from the household of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The makers have confirmed that this hammergun was completed in April 1909 for the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII. The records are specific that Barre was the engraver. The gun is covered in finely chiseled low relief with foliate scrollwork illustrating monsters and masks upon a blackened background. Included is a gold inlaid escutcheon with the Spanish Royal Coat of Arms.

It is believed that the King used this gun in winning the Tiro-Pichon De Madrid in May 1921. Our provenance includes a picture of the King aside the trophy given for his win and holding what appears to be this gun. Purdey awarded the winner of the Tiro-Pichon De Madrid a prize gun that was to duplicate this piece, however Barre did not engrave the later gun as he was dead by 1921.”

The engraver, G.Ranetti, proudly signed this work on the trigger plate to the right of the trigger. The receiver is literally covered with extremely fine and detailed small scroll with interspersed acanthus and floral scroll over-lays. This fine engraving work continues to the trigger guard, upper and lower tang, operating lever, butt plate frame and forearm latching hardware. This is the ultimate of 100% coverage. Flli Piotti 20 gauge sidelock with fabulous engraving: This gun was imported to America by our friends at William Larkin & Moore. They record this as a KING 1 model. This little 20 is of the highest quality. While it is known that I prefer pre WWII guns I find as I handle this gun it is hard to put down. Armi Piotti is one of Italy’s best known gunmakers. Founded in the early sixties by brothers Araldo and Faustino Piotti, the company has earned a reputation for top-quality doubles at reasonable price (reasonable when compared to new British doubles, that is).

I think “Used” is the best way to buy them. If I were in the market for a real small bore, I would take a long look at this King No. 1 sidelock .410. It caught my eye for three reasons:

1.) The 28″ barrels. Most of the .410s you see out there are weare shorter tubes – usually 26″. But when it comes to little guns like this, longer is better. Those two inches may not seem like much, but the birds will hate you for it.

2.) The long-ish stock. With a 14 3/8″ LOP, this double will fit a lot of guys right out of the box. With a pad, it could fit even more.

3.) The price. While this gun isn’t cheap ($19,750), it costs less than 1/2 its replacement cost.

Westley Richards Explora Droplock SXS , 12 gauge, 28” & 26” bbls: 28” Paradox bbls with flips sights for 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 yards. 26″ shotguns bbls with 2 ¾” chambers. Manufrance sxs 16ga: Very nice light Manufrance with both top and bottom sunken rib, straight grip, sling swivels. Light engraving. It features double triggers, side clips and extractors. Bbls are 27.5″, choked full and mod. The drop at the comb is 1.75, and 2.75 at the heel. LOP is 15″ to a pad. $1750

I don’t follow Italian sidelock shotguns all that much. That being said, something tells me that this nearly-new Piotti that Cabela’s just listed must be a good deal. William Larkin Moore has a price of $36,600 for one of these brand new.

Piotti King 1 SxS .410g – $13,999

Here’s more on it from Cabela’s site: This beautiful lightweight gun has been very lightly fired, perhaps only once. The bores are bright and smooth. We wiped cosmoline off the muzzle and breechface. The action is fully engraved. The wood is very nice. It shows virtually no wear. The initial plate in the buttstock has been engraved with initials. It comes in a fitted hard case.
