Rare Ithaca NID 3E 10 ga. 3 1/2″ Magnum Side-by-Side: Rare Ithaca 3E 10 ga. circa 1933, 3-1/2″ magnum 30″ barrels fitted with Briley Chokes to enable modern wildfowl loads. Single trigger, auto ejectors, auto safe. Straight stock, splinter forend of highly figured walnut measures 1-1/2″ comb 2-1/2″ heel, length of pull 14″ over Hawkins pad. The massive action retains 75% strong case colors and crisp engraving. Barrels about 97% finish with some blemishes in the blue perfect bores no dings or dents. Joseph Lang & Son 2″ 12 Gauge Boxlock SxS: Joseph Lang & Son, 7 Bury, St. James’s, London 2″ 12 Gauge game gun with 26″ XF/M ejector barrels with a concave rib with ” FOR 2 INCH CASE ONLY ” inlaid in platinum. Bores are excellent measuring .731 right and left. Choked .016 right and .044 left. Minimum wall thickness of .027 right and .028 left. Chambers remain 2″. London proved for 7/8 oz. shot. Receiver retains 70% fading case colors with border engraving. Barrel, floorplate, and trigger guard blue remain at 97% Stocked in a lovely piece of English walnut with very nice color and contrast with receiver drop points. Vacant stock oval. Fantastic August Francotte XXV 16ga best quality sidelock game gun – Ultra lightweight Game Gun that is stone new and stunningly gorgeous: Stone cold gorgeous 16ga August Francotte 16ga game gun made with straight stock, double triggers, auto ejectors, splinter forend, and original beautifully checkered butt. Case hardened action is near fully engraved in beautiful floral scroll pattern as seen in the photos. Stunning straight grained European Walnut with fiddleback that is just so pretty! Overall the gun remains in near mint original condition with virtually all original refinish remaining on both wood and metal surfaces. The gun would make an outstanding woodcock and grouse gun! J & W Tolley 4 Bore – 1895, 95% CASE COLOR: 15lbs 12oz, Serial Number: 7804. J. & W. Tolley was an English gunmaker of some notoriety, mostly noted for large bore waterfowlers. From about 1894 through 1903 they occupied a London address and that was when this gun was made. Tolley guns became known for their quality in 1894 with their appointment as gunmakers to the King of Portugal and to the Persian Royal family. These are not casual appointments, and the quality can be seen in their guns from the London address after 1894. This amazing find is a FULLY FACTORY ORIGINAL, HIGH CONDITION, UNTOUCHED single barrel hammer gun with a Jones Underlever locking system produced by J & W Tolley 126 years ago. The serial number (7804) and proof marks on the bottom of the barrel indicates a manufacture date of 1895. The action retains 85% factory case color with some fading, nice border engraving with screws and breech area nicely but sparsely decorated. The underlever and full tang trigger guard retain 95% vivid factory case colors. The Jones underlever is known for its robust lock-up, and the barrels are tight on the breech face as a new gun. The 38” fluid steel barrel has excellent mirror bore, 4” chamber, .940 bore diameter with extra full choke 52 thou restriction, and a minimum barrel wall thickness of .106”! Barrel has normal and numerous light handling marks and 85% factory blue. The mechanics are excellent, with a crisp trigger, strong springs, and perfect screws. The fit of wood to metal is impeccable, and the checkering shows almost no wear. The stock measurements are 14 9/16” LOP with a drop at heel of 2 ¾”. WE HAVE PRESENTED THIS GUN IN “AS FOUND CONDITION” WITHOUT CLEANING OR ALTERING THE GUN. We generally prescribe to cleaning up checkering and replacing decrepit butt pads before showing the gun, but some collectors prefer to choose what cleaning should be done. We did function check the entire gun and it is awesome. If you want service done to the gun we can arrange that with our gunsmith department and get the work done without delay. The gun is a BEAST when brought to shoulder…IT IS A BEHEMOTH! Weighing 15 3/4lbs. and balanced 2½” in front of the hinge pin, this is a gun that could be fired from the shoulder but was likely rested in the punt boat on a sack of grain. There is a rear flip-up sight used to line up on the flock of waterfowl this gun was made to decimate, one shot at a time. These are rare guns in 4 bore and to find a waterfowler in this high factory original condition is a treasure found.Price: $9,950.00

Very near mint and all original Parker VH 12ga 28″- Reference Gun: Advanced collectors always have what they call “reference guns”. A gun that they know to be all original to compare other guns to. This particular gun, a 225k SN range VH 12ga with original 28″ Vulcan Steel barrels is absolutely a reference gun. Made with capped pistol grip, splinter forend, double triggers and extractors. Here are two more nice doubles coming up at Poulin Auctions 2018 Fall sale, which starts this Saturday, 10/20.

This Lang is a converted pinfire and an interesting piece of history. Lang was one of the first British makers to build breechloading shotguns, and I bet this gun was among the first ones he built.

Cross pollination in British gunmaking: A 12g “by” Lang & Hussey…

LANG & HUSSEY UNDER-LEVER SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR 12 GAUGE WOODWARD-STYLE SHOTGUN

James Woodward was one of the giants of British gunmaking. In 1872, he founded his firm–James Woodward & Sons. In 1948, after having built some of the finest doubles to ever come out of the UK, the company was sold to James Purdey & Sons. In the 76 years in between, Woodward built around 5000 guns. Even though the gun you see here is engraved Lang & Hussey, I’m almost certain it was made partly-or totally-by Mr. Woodward’s firm.

Why? Because it’s just too similar to one of Woodward’s most famous guns: the “Automatic”. It even has Woodward’s signature arcaded fences and T safety. And like all top-quality, hammerless Woodwards, it was made with Whitworth fluid-steel barrels.

The Woodward “Automatic” action was based on a design patented by J. Woodward and T. Southgate in 1876, and it cocks “automatically” when you open the gun by pushing forward on the lever wrapping over the triggerguard.

LANG & HUSSEY UNDER-LEVER SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR: Here is rare Lang & Hussey 12 gauge under-lever sidelock non-ejector, built in 1898. The receiver features beautiful border and acanthus scroll engraving, arcaded fences, side-clips, and gold-inlaid cocking indicators. The number “4” is inlaid in gold on rib and tang. The gun locks up tight, and has a doll’s head extension. The 30″ barrels have 2 1/2″ chambers and shiny bores, choked .040/.040. The rib is engraved: LANG & HUSSEY Ld. 102 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH’S FLUID PRESSED STEEL. The stock is very pretty French walnut, and has various dings and indentations, but is solid with no cracks. It measures 1 1/2″ x 2 1/8″ x 14 1/4″ over a vintage solid red pad. There is slight cast off. The gun weighs 7 lbs 3 oz. Price: $2,600

Browning BSS Sporter in 20 Gauge w/ Browning Luggage Case

Browning BSS Sporter (Straight Grip) in 20 Gauge, 28″ barrels w/ Browning Luggage Case: It would be hard to find a nicer and more desirable Browning BSS side by side than this one! This 20 gauge “Sporter” model was made in 1979 and is as nice as they come. It comes complete with the original dark brown Browning hard sided luggage case with the owner’s manual and latch keys. It has 28 inch barrels which is the longest length that Browning offered in this model, and they are the hardest length to find. This model BSS also features a straight English style grip, a single selectable trigger, automatic ejectors, and a oil finished walnut stock with checkering on the wrist and forearm. The Browning factory blue finish on the metal parts rates a conservative 98% and looks minty. Only under very close examination can you find anything to deduct some percentage points. The original factory stock set is in excellent condition and could pass for being made last week! The checkering is still sharp and it has not been altered in any way. The Browning butt plate is in excellent shape, and the shotgun pulls 14 & 1/4 inches. The condition of this Browning is nearly perfect and looks like it was never used or carried in the field. These BSS models have a reputation for being durable and nicely fit and finished. Not only are they a very attractive and classy double gun, they handle well in the field and have great balance. We share the opinion of many that you can’t buy a nicer double for the money than this model, and we think it would be next to impossible to find a BSS in any better condition than this one. This is an outstanding Prussian Daly from the pre-war era. All of the metal including the trigger guard, operating lever, tang, forend hardware and the grip cap are profusely covered in acanthus leaf scroll engraving. This same scroll surrounds game scenes on the receiver of pointing dogs on the left, a covey of quail on the right and ducks on the bottom. The metal exhibits a mottled tarnished pewter and smokey grey patina which adds to the original deep relief engraving and makes it more appealing now, than decades ago when first created.

Dark, dark Turkish walnut was selected for the pistol grip stock and three piece forearm. Truly outstanding fler-de-lis checkering is generously spread over the grip surfaces. A narrow wedge of horn is inlaid at the tip of the forearm and the gold inset oval in the toeline has yet to be initialed. The barrels retail 95% of their blue, the bores are bright & excellent and the wood has seen exceptional care. This gun may be better now that when it was made. Price: $12,500

There are three things I look for when buying a double: original condition, shootable dimensions, and a fair price. This SxS by Joseph Lang & Sons has the first two. As far as price, it’s going to sell for exactly what people think it’s worth.

Other than the Decelerator pad, this shotgun looks like it has never been messed with, and the original 2 3/4″ chambers are a nice touch. It’s up for auction now with no reserve, and the listing ends on February 8, 2015, @ 17:03:00 PT.

Joseph Lang was one of England’s great gunmakers. He started his business in 1821 went on to make key contributions to the breach-loading designs that changed shotguns forever in the 1850s and 1860s. In 1907, his company introduced the .470 Nitro Express – the most famous dangerous-game cartridge ever created. The company was merged with Stephen Grant & Sons in 1925 and went on to become a part of Atkin, Grant & Lang.

JOSEPH LANG & SON / LONDON ~ BOXLOCK EJECTOR 28, IC/MOD, Mfd 1965… GUN… V 12-GAUGE: NO RESERVE!! Here’s a very high quality English shotgun that was manufactured by Joseph Lang & Son, one of the grand old London gunmakers dating back to the 1820’s. This particular double gun is a relatively recent effort and was manufactured in about 1965. A 12-gauge boxlock, it wears 28″ barrels with 2-3/4″ chambers. The barrels are choked Improved Cylinder (right / .0089″ constriction) and Modified (left / .0216″ constriction). It features double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety. The buttstock is the straight, English style with a LOP measuring 14-3/4″ to the forward trigger. Drop @ Comb is 1-1/2″; Drop @ Heel is 2-1/4″.

Condition is excellent and the gun retains most of the original finish. The case colors on the frame are vivid with only light wear. The bright blue finish on the trigger plate and trigger guard/tang is excellent with minimal wear. Likewise, the finish on the barrels rates nearly 100% with little appreciable wear. The stocks are in fine shape too with a few handling marks but no cracks or chips. A thin black “Decelerator” pad has been professionally installed without cutting the stock and the original hard buttplate & screws are included should the purist wish to put it back to “factory original”. Weight is 6-3/4 pounds. Mechanically excellent, this gun locks up tight, functions flawlessly, and has mirror bright bores. A Browning takedown case is included which is in very good shape and serves to protect this wonderful English double. In the 175 years that Joseph Lang guns were in production, just over 24,000 guns were produced. These rank the very best of the English makers. A very, very nice shotgun!!

Ithaca 4E 20 gauge with 28″ bbls: This is a Lewis & Nig model 4E with 28″ long barrels and double, gold plated, checkered triggers. The length of pull is 14-1/4″ to a factory butt plate. This gun was made in 1906. The left bore is .633 dia with .005 choke and the Right bore is .636 dia and has .039 choke. Francotte 20gauge model 14E: Imported in the 1920s by Von Lengerke and Detmold of New York. VL&D were big competitors of Abercrombie and Fitch and imported many high quality European guns.This gun has 26″ barrels choked modified (.017″) and full (.027″). It has a semi pistol grip stock,double triggers,and ejectors.The stock dimensions are 14 3/8″ LOP x 15/8″ at comb x 2 3/4″ at heel.It weighs 6-2 and has 2 3/4″ chambers. It has full coverage scroll engraving and checkered sidepanels.The bores are clean and bright with no damage.A great upland gun.C&R eligible. Price: $3,995

Check out the condition on this 400/360 double rifle from J. Lang. It’s basically it’s brand new. Pretty cool considering it was made in 1952.

Guns, guns, guns!

Just a quick update before the weekend. I’m heading up to Maine to chase woodcock with Puck. I’m very excited to see some birds and get the dog in the woods. The woodock should be back in full force, so I hope to see a bunch of them. We may get out in the evening to watch the males display, too. I’ll post some pics on Sunday.

Minty Turner Lightweight Shotgun at Amoskeag

Here are a couple interesting guns on the market right now:

Here’s an odd “Purdey” hammergun. It has a sidelever and a very plain finish. It is not “…in the white…” as the seller states. Instead, it’s just plain, low grade double barrel, retailed by Purdey and probably made by W. & C. Scott. The price is very optimistic.

This Lang is another interesting side-by-side shotgun. It’s a converted pinfire with a unique lever-opening action. Very odd.

And don’t forget Amoskeag Auction Company’s sale on March 26. There are lots of Lefevers there, plus a few other nice guns, including this brand new Turner Lightweight (look at that ‘friggin condition) and a super little Francotte .410 (with long barrels AND a long stock–hard to find).
