Original or redone? A 12g Prussian Charles Daly Feather Weight …

Prussian Charles Daly Lindner Empire Grade Damascus 12ga 26″ Featherweight

I’ve always liked vintage Charles Daly side-by-sides, and I think they’re some of the finest boxlock shotguns ever made.

So when this 12g came up for auction on Gunbroker.com a few weeks ago, I was thrilled. But not as thrilled as some guys. This double hammered down for $6,125 — WAY than I wanted to pay for it (a far more than I thought it would bring).

Take a look at. What do you think — is it all original? Or is it totally redone? I think it’s all original, including the finish on the bbls.

This SxS was built in the 1890s, but not by anyone named Charles Daly.

Charles Daly was a businessman, not a gunmaker. He started branding guns with his name on them around 1875. At first, he used several makes in Europe. But by the late 1880s, he had settled on Heinrich A. Lindner for most of his shotguns.

Prussian Charles Daly Lindner Empire Grade Damascus 12ga 26″ Featherweight

Lindner was a gunmaker in Suhl, Prussia (which is now Germany). Lindner took Westley Richards brilliant Anson & Deeley shotgun action, tweaked it, and made it his own.

In its day, this gun was one of Daly’s lower-grade models. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t high quality (or inexpensive). Everything Lindner made was beautifully built. You can see that in this gun. From the proportions of the action and the stock to the shaping of the triggers and the finish on the metal, everything is well done.

When this gun was built, the shooting world was experiencing a fad for lightweight, 12-gauge shotguns. Belgian and German makers like Francotte and Lindner responded by building twelves that came in right around 6lbs.

Prussian Charles Daly Lindner Empire Grade Damascus 12ga 26″ Featherweight:

  • Make: Charles Daly made by Charles Lindner in Prussia
  • Model: Empire grade Featherweight
  • Action: Side by Side
  • Serial number / year:  1046 / late 1800’s early 1900’s
  • Finish: The Damascus twist is a very pretty pattern and shows well.  The receiver is mostly in the white but we do see traces of the original case color under the lever and in the non-contact areas.
  • Caliber: 12ga – we do not know the chamber length.
  • Barrel Length: 26″ with fixed cylinder chokes
  • Bore Condition: Excellent – both are clean, smooth and bright.
  • Stock/grips: The stock and forend are in great shape with light use and handling wear.  The checkering is still fairly sharp.  We do not see any cracks, breaks or repairs.
  • LOP: 14″

CHARLES DALY PRUSSIAN DIAMOND QUALITY NO. 275 SXS

Here’s a super nice Charles Daly that’s coming up at Poulin’s Auction this Friday, March 13. It’s a Diamond Quality No. 275, which was one of Daly’s top grade doubles. These early Dalys were made in Prussia by the firm of Harold Lindner, and they’re some of the finest boxlock shotguns ever made. This one has some awesome color-case hardening on it, and the engraving on the bottom of the action is fantastic.

Lindner Made Charles Daly SxS Shotgun, Diamond Quality SN307, 1800s Antique 12 Gauge

I’ve written a lot about Charles Daly shotguns — and for good reason. Up until the mid-1930s, Daly shotguns were some of the finest doubles sold in the US.

Charles Daly was a businessman, not a gunmaker. Around 1875 he partnered with August Shoverling to import shotguns into the United States. These side-by-sides were marketed under the Charles Daly name, and early on they were built by serveral different makers.

By the time this gun was built, Daly had established a relationship with a German gunmaker named Harold Lindner. The Lindner-Daly relationship lasted from the end of the 19th century until around WW1, and produced some of the finest boxlock shotguns ever made.

This Daly is Gunauction.com now at No Reserve and the listing ends December 21, 2014, @ 17:27:00 PT.

BTW: You can see more nice Charles Dalys that I’ve written about here and here.

Auction alert: a super rare Joseph Jakob – H.A. Lindner 10g boxlock shotgun…

10 gauge Joseph Jakob boxlock double barrel shotgun
10 gauge Joseph Jakob boxlock double barrel shotgun

Towards the end of the 19th century, America was full of gunmakers. From the big boys like Colt and Winchester to tiny guys like Krider and Tonks. Joseph Jakob was one of these tiny guys, and the 10g shotgun you see here is one of his guns. It’s coming up this Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Poulin Antiques & Auctions. The sales starts @ 10:00 AM.

Jakobs was has a shop at 1156 Passyhunk Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. Other than that, little is known about him, though and very few firearms bearing his name are in circulation today (Maybe around 12).

On the one you see here,  the action, barrels, and metalwork were sourced in Prussia from H.A. Lindner, the famous double-barrel maker behind Charles Daly shotguns. These parts were fitted and finished off by Jakob, and the gun was also stocked by him (or by people he employed for the task). This was a common practice and “makers” throughout the US did it with parts they brought in from the UK and Europe.

More about Joseph Jakob

I found this info online. It’s from a book on classic American gunmakers. Judging by the “War of Northern Aggression” comments, I’m guessing the author was Southern:

“It appears Joseph Jakob hung out his shingle as the War of Northern Aggression commenced and at least the firm, or some variant & maybe Joseph Jakob himself, till 1905. He made percussion dueling pistols and muzzleloaders to the customers specifications.

In the 1870s he seemed to parallel William R. Schaefer in effort as both had 2 to 3 craftsmen working in their respective shops.. He must have been an obsessive-compulsive as his shop in every detail was as clean as a pin. One could not find the shop of Messieurs Purdey any more immaculate or more organized than that of Joseph Jakob. Also his workmanship was compared to that of Purdey at the time. Upon entry to the shop, one would pass thru a portal, where a half glass door hung, noting white curtains covering the window panes, and passing across a white surfaced floor that was so clean one could take lunch off of it. A few small rugs were neatly placed in the shop. All this cleanliness was due largely to the efforts of his daughter.

Prior to say 1890, one would have found several Joseph Jakob examples in a gun case with a set of glass doors. During the 1890s the guns were replaced by sporting weapon components and sporting related items. The demise of the firm of Joseph Jakob can be attributed to the lack of embracement to mechanization. After the truce of the War of Northern Aggression in 1865, one could not find a machine made sporting weapon in the U.S. of A. and the Brits had cornered the market. But over the next decade the scales were going to tilt in the other direction with respected to partially machine made and machine made sporting weapons. This transition forced Joseph Jakob’s shop from a multi-man effort shop to a single man shop, to pretty much a repair facility peddling shell cutters and the like. By 1890 the firm was listed as Joseph Jakob & Sons and the reorganization may have occurred earlier say between 1885 & 1889.

It was either the name change, or an address change, from 1890 foward till 1905 when the shop appears to have been closed. Something occured in 1899 and it may be that Joseph Jakob retired or expired and the sons continued for about another 5 years. This is purely conjuecture but it was a bumpy road for the firm from the mid 1890s to 1905 and possibly as late as 1909. “

Big bucks for a plain Charles Daly boxlock…

Prussian. Lindner-made Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Barrel, Side by Side, Boxlock ejector, Shotgun
Prussian. Lindner-made Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Barrel, Side by Side, Boxlock ejector, Shotgun

Lindner-made Charles Daly side-by-side shotguns used to be one of the best buys in the vintage double world. That’s why I was excited to see this lightweight 12 gauge come up yesterday at Amoskeag Auctions. It was in great condition and I was hoping to get a deal.

Well, a deal didn’t happen. This Charles Daly hammered down for $4200. Add in the buyer’s premium, and  the winner is going to pay at least $4830 for this gun. That’s a lot of money for a plain 12 gauge boxlock – even if it was made by the famous Lindner clan.

Auction alert: lightweight 12 gauge Prussian Lindner Charles Daly side by side

Prussian. Lindner-made Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Barrel, Side by Side, Boxlock ejector, Shotgun
Prussian. Lindner-made Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Barrel, Side by Side, Boxlock ejector, Shotgun

Here’s another Charles Daly side-by-side that’s selling at auction tomorrow. This is a Prussian/Lindner-made Daly, and if you follow this blog at all you know how much I like these shotguns. If you don’t follow it, you can read more about these Prussian/Lindner-made Dalys here.

Prussian Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Ejector shotgun: Serial #1051, 12 ga., 28″ matted rib Krupp steel barrels choked skeet and improved modified with bright excellent bores. The barrels retain 98% original blue having scattered scratches, particularly around the breech end and some fading at the muzzles. The scalloped frame is embellished with a panel of scroll and the Charles Daly name on both sides and it exhibits 80% vibrant case colors with some fading around the balls of the fences and on the bottom plate. The triggerguard also exhibits good color but showing a silver tang.

Prussian Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Ejectorgun, 12 gauge, Lightweight
Prussian Charles Daly Empire Grade Double Ejectorgun, 12 gauge, Lightweight

The nicely figured round knob pistol grip stock rates very good to excellent having a few handling marks over a gentle refinishing and very fine checkering with some rounded diamonds. The splinter forearm has a lever release which still exhibits some fading color and an ebony tip, and also rates very good to excellent as lightly refinished with fine crisp checkering.

The stock has a gold monogram plate in the toeline and an expertly added leather covered recoil pad providing a length of 14 1/4″ and drops of 1 5/8″ at the comb and 2 1/2″ at the heel with no cast. The gun features double triggers, ejectors, and automatic safety, and weighs 6 lbs. 3 ozs. This is a beautiful Lindner Daly built with the precision and craftsmanship that is the hallmark of these early Prussian doubles, and would make a wonderful lightweight upland double. (Estimate $3000/$4000)

Awesome Gun Alert: a super 20 gauge Charles Daly Regent Diamond side-by-side…

20 gauge Charles Daly Regent Diamond Grade Double Barrel Shotgun

Wow – check out this 20 gauge Charles Daly Regent Diamond shotgun that just hit the market. it appears to be in excellent original condition. This side-by-side looks like it’s spectacular original condition. While it’s not cheap ($24,000), that price is pretty fair when you consider how rare and well made it is.

Regent Diamonds were the most “deluxe” of deluxe guns that Lindner made for Charles Daly (go to this post to compare it to a regular Diamond). The workmanship on them is absolutely top notch. Just check out how beautifully sculpted the action, fences and toplever are. Even though the gold on this one is a bit over the top, it’s well tastefully executed so that it helps make this a real elegant little gun.

Charles Daly Diamond Grade VS. a Westley Richards Deluxe…

12g Charles Daly Diamond Grade Side-by-Side Shotgun
12g Charles Daly Diamond Grade Side-by-Side Shotgun

If you following this blog, you know how much I like Prussian-Lindner-made Charles Daly Side-by-Sides.  The Brits invented the Anson & Deeley boxlock shotgun, but in a lot of ways I think the Prussians and Belgians perfected it. To see what I mean, compare this Charles Daly Diamond Grade and Westley Richards Deluxe droplock.

Both side-by-sides are beautifully made and finished. But aesthetically, the 12 gauge Charles Daly Diamond is hard to beat. Just look at how rounded and sculpted the action is. The Daly also has a removable hinge pin and intercepting safety sears — features missing on the Westley.

Of course, the Westley is made on the famous Droplock action. A lot of people consider the droplock to be the apex of boxlocks. I agree that it’s a great design. I would love to have one, but it sure comes at a cost.

What do you think – Westley or Daly? Let me know…

You can see more nice Charles Dalys that I’ve written about here and here.

Another Charles Daly, this one a Diamond Grade…

I wrote about this 24 gauge Charles Daly Regent Diamond grade A couple weeks ago. Today, lets look at a much earlier Daly double barrel.

Charles Daly Diamond Grade double barrel shotgun

This is a 12 gauge Diamond grade, one step down from the Regent Diamond, but in many ways a much more beautiful side by side. This gun was made in the 19th century, probably around 1892. Back then, Daly’s Diamond grade was their best shotgun, and Lindner went out of his way to make sure these were exceptional guns. You can see this quality in how well the action is sculpted and the stock is formed. The engraving is also fantastic.

The other thing I like about this gun i how no one thing steals the show. Instead, the wood, the engraving, the Extra Fine Damascus barrels, and the entire gun come together in one stunning impression.

Instead saying “Look at that wood” or “Wow, what fancy engraving,” I looked at this Daly and thought “Look at that ‘friggin gun!” To me, that’s what makes a a side-by-side a Best quality gun.
