The finest Parker Bros. AH 10ga extant! Near mint all original lightweight gun made on a #2 Frame with orig 30″ barrels – appears test fired only

The finest Parker Bros. AH 10ga extant! Near mint all original lightweight gun made on a #2 Frame with orig 30″ barrels – appears test fired only:  One of just 14 made in this configuration – this rare early gun made on a #2 frame (very rare in 10ga) with 30″ Finest Damascus barrels.  This gun, made in 1890, was the highest grade gun made at the time and was made with original splinter forend, double triggers, extractors, and beautifully engraved skeleton buttplate.  This gun is absolutely 100% full coverage engraved, most certainly by W.H. Gough, and perhaps a detailed inspection will unveil his occasionally found and very elusive signature.  The gun is engraved with no less than 3 dogs on the bottom of the frame and 4 birds in a scene on the trigger plate, two more towards forend, two dogs on trigger guard bow with full scroll engraving, double dogs on right side with serpentine “PARKER BROS.” surrounded by full scroll, dog scenes on each of the breech balls, and double dogs on left, again with serpentine makers name surrounded by full scroll engraving.  The gun has its original engraved and blued skeleton buttplate.  Stocked with incredible straight grained European Walnut stocks which are beautifully checkered as seen in the photos.  All stampings are factory correct and original in every respect. This gun remains in spectacular original condition- nearly unheard of for one of these early guns.  The gun retains more than 95% bold vivid original case color throughout.  Stocks are excellent and sound with virtually all of their original hand rubbed finish with only minor handling marks throughout.  Trigger guard retains more than 80% original blue.  The buttplate retains more than 60% of its original high luster blue.  The breechface shows almost no signs of a shell ring from firing.  The barrels retain about 95% of their dark bold original pattern with only minor spotting towards the right breech as seen in the photos.  Bores are brilliant and shiny and the mechanics are crisp.  This gun matches it’s PGCA letter as seen in the photos. This exceptional “Best in Class” Parker is priced at $47,500 and can be shipped directly to your door as an antique.  If you desire the very best – look no further – this is it.  This gun is as fresh as a spring daisy having never been offered for sale publicly.

This is a great woodcock, quail, grouse and skeet gun with handling that will allow you to be successful on any outing that you choose. The radial matting on the barrels is quite attractive and provides a glare free sighting plane to a period ivory end bead. It is in good cosmetic and mechanical condition with ejectors that kick the empties well out of the way for quick reloading. It is a pre-war gun and exhibits the quality of items made when craftsmen were truly capable of fine work. The checkered side panels must be 35 lines per inch or more and the stock and forend checkering is very fine as well. The drop at the comb is 1-5/8″ and the drop at the heel is a mere 2″ and the length of pull is 14-1/4″ to a factory black plastic butt plate. Price: $2395

Truly exceptional, genuine, and very rare early Parker A1 Special 12ga – Superior engraving and metal work- early “Whit1” gun & the 6th A1: This extraordinary Parker A1 Special ranks amongst one of the nicest A1 Special 12ga guns I have handled.  Made in 1906 on a #2 frame, this exact gun is pictured on pages 359 and 360 of “The Parker Story.  This gun, with beautiful 30” Whitworth steel barrels made with fully checkered forend with fleur-de-lis pattern.  Made with double triggers, auto ejectors, auto safety, buttstock with gold capped pistol grip and terminates with an older Silver’s type pad.  The action is full coverage engraved in very deep relief floral and scroll pattern.  Sculpted fences.  The grip cap has a lined gold washer and the cap itself with full gold initial plate as seen in the photos.  Truly exceptional – this is the 6th A1 Special Parker Bros. ever made and is documented exactly as found today. Parker VH 20g 26″ original…high condition

Parker VH 20g 26″ original…high condition: 26” solid rib barrels choke IC/F.  Double triggers, automatic safety, late Parker gun.  Capped pistol grip stock with 13 7/8” LOP over the dogs head butt plate, 1 5/8” DAC and 2 ½” DAH; splinter forearm. The frame is bright from carrying but there is at least 80% muted case colors, original barrel blue is excellent; trigger guard has only traces of blue.  Wood varnish appears to be original and there is on small repair at the rear of the top tang. The barrels have .618” bore diameters where .615 is standard so I will assume that the bores were lightly polished by .003” with nominal wall thickness of .027”.  “0” frame. So, this is a very nice, high condition VH 20…ready for upland hunting and as a great addition to your collection.  Made in 1935 and is exactly as specified in the Parker Gun Id book. VERY RARE AH GRADE PARKER 12 GAUGE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN AT MERZANTIQUES.COM
VERY RARE AH GRADE PARKER 12 GAUGE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN AT MERZANTIQUES.COM

It’s a Parker Bros A.H.-quality with ejectors (which makes it an A.H.E.) and ACME fluid steel barrels. Back when it was built in 1917, it was Parker’s third-best gun, two down from the top-of-the-line A1 Special and a single step below the company’s famous AAH-quality shotguns.

Parker AH Grade Shotgun, page from a Parker catalog, from parkerguns.org
Parker AH Grade Shotgun, page from a Parker catalog, from parkerguns.org

As you can imagine, it was expensive in its day. It cost more than most guys took home in six months, and that’s one big reason why Parker only built a total of 306 AH-grade shotguns. They were just too expensive for most folks.

But if you had the money ($250 in the 1920s), you could buy yourself a great looking gun.

VERY RARE AH GRADE PARKER 12 GAUGE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN AT MERZANTIQUES.COM

VERY RARE AH GRADE PARKER 12 GAUGE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN: Gun features a 30 inch barrel with an unusual 2 Ivory beads on it. Choked improved cylinder and modified. AH stamp on the water table as well as a number 6. 175k serial range. Original straight grip stock measuring 14-5/8 inches to the end of the Josten pad. Excellent condition with most original varnish. Sharp checkering. It has a gold inlaid unused inscription plate in the stock. This Parker is in beautiful shape with 85-90% bright case colors on the frame. Bottom of the receiver retains just traces of case color. The trigger guard is nicely engraved with a dog and has traces of blue remaining. Bottom of the receiver has a beautifully done dog with a bird in it’s mouth and a running deer. Both sides of the receiver are game scene engraved. Quite delicately done. Gun has the correct splinter forearm as well automatic ejectors. Also has the correct barrel markings “Acme Steel” on top of the rib. Overall this just a great gun. This is the 3rd A grade I have bought this week. This one came from an estate out of Fargo North Dakota. It has been identified in the Parker gun identification and serialization book having all the mentioned features. Has never been on the market before. Gun weighs 7pounds 5 ounces. Price: $ 41,500.

Auction alert: 16g Parker GHE, No Reserve ….

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28" Shotgun
1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun

Classic. American. Grouse gun. Here it is, and it’s on Gunbroker.com now, being auctioned off at no reserve. The listing ends 11/4/2018 @ 8:43 PM.

The Parker GHE (a quality GH gun with Ejectors), was a lower, middle-grade gun in its day. Parker called it “a gun of exceptional value,” so it wasn’t cheap, but it offered a lot of nice features at a fair price.

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28" Shotgun
1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun

This one is in what I would called “honest wear” condition. It looks like it was shot a lot, and a lot of the original finish is gone. There’s a pronounced crack in the forend, too. But that crack looks fixable and the rest of the gun looks sound.

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun

1931 Parker Brothers GHE 16 Gauge SxS 28″ Shotgun: This Parker Brothers shotgun shows a Serial Number of: 235828. Length of Pull measures 13.5″ to back trigger. Length of Pull measures 14.5 to the forward trigger. Manufacture date is listed as 1931. This classic representation has Upland Game Scenes engraved on the frame. Barrel length is listed at 28″. In the select world of vintage American double barrel shotguns, the name Parker Brothers stands in a class of their own. The Parker Gun Collectors Association has done a great job fostering knowledge on these fine guns, which many believe to be America’s finest. This GHE shows:

  • Serial Stamp is 235828.
  • Frame Size “1”
  • “16/1” on the barrel lug
  • Barrel flat shows 3 1 indicating barrel weight.
  • Watertable is stamped GH indicating grade.
  • Barrel is stamped “Special Steel”
  • Watertable is stamped “2”

This 1931 example is in very fine condition showing a proud degree of the original blue finish and case coloring. The select grade American hardwood stock and forearm show a rich texture and grain profile. The original dog’s head buttplate is featured and also remains in excellent condition. The lettering and engraving and screws are all in superb condition and look clocked properly along the axis of the gun. The triggers are crisp and break clean. There are fewer and fewer 16ga. Parkers with 28” Parker Special Steel barrels remaining original condition. The forearm shows small imperfections but remains solid throughout. A most gorgeous Parker Brother SXS Shotgun for your consideration. We have opened the gun and photographed the internal proofs in detail.

Good gun alert: 12g Parker VH SxS, 1 1/2 frame …

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

I’m going to out on a limb here and say this 12g Parker VH is a nice double. While the seller doesn’t say much about the gun, it gun looks pretty original and appears to be in OK shape. Sure it has some honest wear, but that adds to the gun’s charm.

What I really like about this double is what it is and what it doesn’t have.

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

First, it’s a 12g on a 1 1/2 frame. Standard 12g Parkers come on No. 2 frames. That’s why they’re heavy — usually 7.5lbs+ — and too much gun for the hunting I do. The 1 1/2 frame is smaller than the 2, and twelves built on it can be a half-pound lighter. That means this Parker could weigh under 7lbs–which light for a 12g VH.

Second, it doesn’t have ejectors — which is good. Upland hunters don’t need them, and Parker ejectors aren’t great. Not having them on a SxS  makes this gun reliable and it makes it weigh a bit less.

‘Friggin WOW. An incredible 28g Parker BHE side by side…

Parker Bros. BHE, 28ga, original 26" Acme Steel barrels. Double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety. 1916. 1 of 4 made. Here’s a double you don’t see every day–and may never see again.

It’s a 28 gauge Parker BHE built in 1916. When it was made, Quality B.H. guns were the 4th down in the company’s lineup, below the A. No. 1 Special, the A.A.H., and the A.H. (the first Invincible was completed in 1923).

Parker only made 1,034 B.H. grade guns. That’s not many, especially for a company that built 247,000+ doubles in all. Most of those B.H. grades were 12s. As it says below, only four were 28 gauges.

Parker Bros. BHE, 28ga, original 26″ Acme Steel barrels. Double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety. 1916. 1 of 4 made.  “00” frame. Double triggers, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety.  The gun is fabulously engraved with scroll and floral pattern – a special order feature. It has 2-7/8″ original chambers with excellent bright shiny bores, measuring .563 right and .557 left. Full length matted top rib with proper original Acme barrel legend.  The gun has a capped pistol grip, inlaid with a gold cap and a large “H” engraved on the cap. Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, 26 Inch Barrels, Very Rare with Original Box
Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, 26 Inch Barrels, Very Rare with Original Box

Say you  a new shotgun. Would you use it, or stash it away — forever?

For some reason, whoever bought this 20g Parker VH back in 1921 for around $60 decided “stash it away — forever” was the way to go. And this week, 96 years later, it came out of hiding and sold for $14,750.

Quality V.H. shotguns were built to be “…strictly high-grade gun at a very low price–the best-made gun of its grade ever produced”. Hunters bought 78,670 of them and made the VH Parker’s most popular model.

Today, VHs are the most common Parkers out there. But how many of them all original, brand new, in their original box, with their original tags, like this one? Very, very few. That’s why some collector paid so much money for it.

Minty Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, with Original Box & Tags. Sold for $14,750.
Minty Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, with Original Box & Tags. Sold for $14,750.

Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, 26 Inch Barrels, Very Rare with Original Box and Hang TagsIt is not often that we have the opportunity to sell a firearm as special as this Parker.  In all the years we have been in the firearms business, neither we or any of the other dealers we have talked with have ever had an original box and hang-tags with a Parker Shotgun.  The 1921 vintage shotgun is a Vulcan Grade 20 Gauge with 26 inch barrels that is built on the lightweight O frame.  It is in the best condition we have seen in years with nearly 100% original blue and 95%+ original case colors, with the only wear apparent on the gun is a small loss of case colors and small dark staining spots on the sides of the breeches of the receiver, probably from “box wear”.  The bores are mint and the wood is nearly flawless, with only a couple of very small handling marks in the finish.  This is probably the nicest 20 Gauge Parker most people would ever see, and it is made extra special by having its original box and hang tags.  This is undoubtedly a “once in a lifetime” chance to own a very unique Parker Side-by-Side. PRICE: $14,750 — SOLD

Wow! What a Parker: 20g BHE, 32″ bbls, straight grip…

Parker BHE SxS 20 gauge 32" barrels, Straight Grip
Parker BHE SxS 20 gauge 32″ barrels, Straight Grip

If you’re a Parker fanatic with deep pockets, grab your check book. Here’s a super rare one, and even though it’s 100 years old, it looks like this side-by-side remains in incredible original condition.

According to the Parker collector’s site, Parker Bros made just over 1,000 BH-grades (which are Quality Bs without hammers — BH). I imagine very, very few of those were 20 gauges with 32″ barrels, ejectors (the E in BHE) and straight grips.

Parker BHE SxS 20 gauge 32" barrels, Straight Grip
Parker BHE SxS 20 gauge 32″ barrels, Straight Grip

Parker BHE SxS 20 gauge 32″ barrelsVery rare, highly collectable 1916 Parker BHE (serial #174053) with straight stock and 32″ barrels. This Parker remains in high original condition with very good stock, B engraved receiver and Acme steel barrels. It is apparent that this shotgun has likely spent a lot of it’s 100 year old life tucked away in someone’s safe, leg-o-mutton gun case or closet. Shotguns of this quality rarely come up for as they are usually socked away in someone’s collection for many years and then passed on to family members, never to be seen by the general public. The consignor, after only a brief ownership, brought this Parker to me with hopes of alleviating homefront tensions. This little SxS features a straight stock, 32″ barrels with shiney bores, ejectors (which work with authority), “0” frame and double triggers. All desireable options for any SxS, but especially a high grade Parker. LOP is at 13 7/8″, DAC is 1 1/2″, DAH is 2 3/4″ and it weighs in at 6 lb 8 oz. Both bores measure .618 with .018 constriction on the right barrel and .024 on the left. Lock up is Parker tight and there is no movement between the barrels and the receiver with the forearm off. This is a seldom seen opportunity to own a high grade Parker. Also included with this Parker is the original leg-o-mutton case that A.T. DeForest bought for it. Price: P.O.R.

Auction Alert: 12 gauge Parker DH SxS, 1 1/2 frame….

Parker Bros. D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300
Parker Bros. D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300

Here’s a nice Parker SxS that’s coming to auction in a couple days. Morphy’s Auctions in Denver, PA, has it, and their sale starts Saturday, May 23 @ 9:00 AM Eastern.

Parker’s Quality DH shotguns were the lowest-grades the company offered as custom-made doubles. In the 1930s, they cost around $148 ($175 with ejectors). At the same time, a Parker A-1 Special went for $825, a Fox XE was $185, and a W. & C. Scott Premier was $1000.

According The Parker Gun Collector’s Association (a must join if you love Parkers):

Parker Bros. D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300
Parker Bros. D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300

The DH had Damascus barrels until Titanic Steel barrels were offered as a popular option. The stock was made of Circassian walnut. The stock commonly has a silver shield behind the tang, nickel or silver plated triggers and spear-pointed extensions to the stock side panels. The checkering on the stock is more elaborate than lower grades and is a deep, twenty lines to the inch. Stocks were fitted with a skeleton butt plate as standard but recoil pads were an option. Dogs were almost always a feature of the engraving on the sides along with some extensive scroll work. Before 1897, almost all grade 3 guns had Damascus barrels and Titanic Steels after that date, that is, until the Acme Steel barrels were introduced.”

Parker Bros. D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300
Parker Bros. D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300

Lot #823: Parker D.H. SXS Double Barrel Shotgun #226300: Manufactured in 1928. Parker 12 ga. with 2 – 3/4″ chambers with titanic steel barrels. The barrels show bright shiny near perfect bores with no pitting, corrosion, rust or dents. The left tube shows a bore diameter of .734″ and choked light full with a choke restriction of .034″. Right tube has a bore diameter of .736″ and choked modified with a restriction of .026″. Original barrel blue rates 95%-97%. The fully engraved receiver shows 60%-70% original case colors and look great with the Parker style engraving pattern. Gun is built on a 1 – 1/2″ size frame. The Parker serialization and identification book show this gun left the factory in this exact configuration. The only alteration is a leather recoil pad has been added. Gun has a length of pull of 14 – 1/4″ and a drop of 2 – 1/4″. The buttstock shows a perfect wood to metal fit, good sharp checkering on the pistol grip. This high condition Parker has a lot of life left in it. It comes with a modern Parker reproduction hard case. This old Parker is very collectible and perfect for the October woods. Wood is excellent, no cracks or chips, sharp checkering, proud to metal. Mint bore, action and lock – up.

The Outlaw: An 8 gauge Parker PH…

8 gauge Parker PH Side-by-Side shotgun
8 gauge Parker PH Side-by-Side shotgun

There are two types of side-by-side shotguns that always thrill guys: The small ones (28s & .410s) and the big ones–like the eight gauge Parker you see here.

Eight gauges use to be used to pass shoot ducks, geese, and swans, and in the 19th century they were popular with shooters hunting along the big flyways up and down the Eastern Seaboard. In the 20th century, they fell out of favor and were eventually outlawed by the Federal Government for use on all migratory species. Today, some states allow you to use on other game species (like turkeys), while others have completely outlawed their use for hunting. Oh well.

Of all the major American makers, Parker made the most 8s – around 246 in all.  According to the book The Parker Story, the first one was #4360, a D-grade underlever made in 1870s, and the last one was #174065, a DH made around 1916 with 36″ barrels. Lefever made some 8s, too, and so did L.C. Smith, but in small numbers – Lefever may have turned out 40 or so (including this nice E grade) and L.C. Smith made around 35 (including this one).

8 gauge Parker PH Side-by-Side shotgun: Ser. No. 152883. 36″ Twist barrels on a No. 6 frame. Bores are mint- lots of finish- wt.- 13 lbs. 10 ozs. A great hard to find Parker in this condition.

PARKER GHE 20 GAUGE SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN WITH 30" BARRELS
PARKER GHE 20 GAUGE SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN WITH 30″ BARRELS

In his book Parker Guns: The Old Reliable, Ed Muderlak said something like “Parker shotguns aren’t rare. But Parker shotguns with lots original condition are.” Ed was right- of course. I live within a couple hours of a few large gun shops. These shops always have a few Parker on their racks. But rarely are these shotguns very original.

Original condition is everything to collectors, and that’s why Parkers like the one you see here drives them crazy. Made in 1923, it’s a 20 gauge G.H. with unusual 30″ barrels and what looks like a ton of original condition.

American classics: a Parker VH, a A.H. Fox AE & a Lefever FE…

Parker VH 12 ga, 28” barrels on a 1 ½ frame:
Parker VH 12 ga, 28” barrels on a 1 ½ frame:

Parker VH 12 ga, 28” barrels on a 1 ½ frame: Clean shiny bores, rib has two ivory beads. LOP is 14.25”to an original butt plate. The butt plate is in great condition and you can clearly see the detail of the wood cock the dog is holding in its mouth. Drop at the comb is 1.75” and drop at the heel is 2.75”. Bores are choked F/F. Has some original case coloring on the sides of the box lock action. The bluing is original and very good, but it is beginning to wear thin in a couple of areas. Wood is solid, no cracks or gouges and this is a very nice clean original Parker on a desirable frame size. SN is 2129XX, and the Parker Association says this gun will letter. Price: $1,800

Early 12 ga Fox AE SxS, Factory straight grip, 30" bbls
Early 12 ga Fox AE SxS, Factory straight grip, 30″ bbls

12 ga Fox AE SxS, Factory straight grip, 30″ bbls: Case colors have faded. Barrels are smooth and shiny inside, single brass bead. The ribs are problem free and the wood is in very good condition too. The gun originally belonged to a man named George Eshias. I have been told that he was an Americana of Armenian heritage and that he was a famous hero in WW1 and that he fought with distinction in the US Army. I have not taken the time to confirm this, but his name has been engraved into the top of the left chamber . (Look at the photos) Hard to believe that his family let this heirloom go but life does get complicated at times. LOP is 14” and drop at the comb is 1.75, drop at the Heel is 3”. Barrels are choked F/F. Price: $2,600

Lefever FE 12 ga with 30” Damascus barrels and twin Ivory beads
Lefever FE 12 ga with 30” Damascus barrels and twin Ivory beads

Lefever FE 12 ga with 30” Damascus barrels and twin Ivory beads: Nice Silvers recoil pad and a LOP of 13.5”, Drop at comb of 2” and drop at heel of 3”. The ejectors work nicely and the gun locks up tightly. The bores are very good and this gun is ready for the field and some RST ammo!! It does have an old repair on the fingers by the triggers. The repair has been looked at by two different reputable gunsmiths and both independently agreed that the old repair is good and is nothing to worry about. Barrels are M/IM. Price: $1,700.00

16 gauge Parker Bros. VH SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, 28″

Take a good look at the 16g Parker double you see here. I bet it will be gone soon – and for good reason. As a 16 gauge on a O frame, it’s hard to find and one of the best grouse guns ever made in America. It also has excellent dimensions, with just 2″ D@C.

Here’s more about it from the seller.

16 gauge Parker Bros. VH SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, 28″: A splendid high condition Parker VH 16 ga. on the small O frame. The 28″ full choke barrels were 3#3ounce pre strike. The frame has 80-90& original case color on the exterior and near 100% in protected and interior locations. The blue is 90% or better with some rub marks. The wood has a few very minor handling marks. The screws appear unturned. The gun was made in 1910 and exists in exceptional condition. Original hard rubber butt plate, (1 small spilt near upper screw hole. Bore are mint. Capped pistol grip 14″ LOP, 1 1/14″ DAC 2″ DAH. A spectacular find and very collectable. Price: $3,600
