MERKEL PRE-WAR PARAGON GRADE 2 BARREL SET 20 GAUGE
MERKEL PRE-WAR PARAGON GRADE 2 BARREL SET 20 GAUGE

Here’s one of the finest German O/Us I’ve ever seen. It’s a sidelock Merkel Paragon, made in 1928 and ordered for an American through A.F. Stoeger’s in New York City. I spotted this shotgun at the Orvis Game Fair Show a couple weekends ago.

The gun is built on Merkel 303-style action with Double Kersten locks and double underbites and removable sidelocks with a concealed lever release (the lever is the round thing you can see behind the gold inlays in the pic to the right).  It was an awesome, and I couldn’t believe how well it handled. Absolutely stunning.

This Merkel changed hands between dealers at the show, and now it looks like it’s sold. I think the price was close to $60,000 — a ton of money, but not that much when you consider what you’re getting: one of the finest and most unusual over-unders you’ll ever find, at any price.

L.C. Smith “O” Grade 16 Gauge SxS Shotgun: 1899 GUN, 70% CASE COLOR, CONDITION: LC Smith, Year 1899, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 14oz, Side by Side. Serial Number: 60594

The L.C. Smith “O” Grade was a step above the Field Grade that came out in 1913 from Hunter Arms (replacing the pre-1913 “OO” Grade) in that it had a bit nicer wood and checkering, a black ebony inlay in the forend tip, and in 1899, the year this gun was produced, a set of nice damascus steel barrels.  This gun, sn60594, is in remarkable condition for its 115 years of age, with lots of case color, perfect screws, perfect wood to metal fit, nicely figured European walnut (book says English walnut, looks like French to me), factory original checkering is excellent, 30″ damascus barrels that still retain 98% of their original black and white pattern, no cracks anywhere, full length butt stock to the factory butt plate, and tight as new mechanically.  With the long barrels and 1/2 round pistol grip, this is a great sporting clays or upland gun, and weighing 6lbs. 14oz. is not too heavy to carry all day.

Barrel Length: 30″, Chokes: .028/.026  F/F, Bores: very good, Bore Diameter: .646/.648, Wall Thickness: .031/.028, Blue: 95% damascus, Chambers: 2 5/8″, Ribs: tight, Sights: single, Ejectors or Extractors: extractors, Case Color: 85% faded, Screws: perfect, Trigger Type: double, crisp

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE in a H&H- EXC. PLUS BORES- EXC. GUN INSIDE & OUT: #19100, Holland & Holland Sidelock Royal Ejector 450 No. 2 Nitro Express Finished at the Factory on August 30, 1906. This gun is a new offering on the U. S. market in a very rare cartridge offering of the great 450 #2 chambering, It has 26″ Ejector Chopper Lump barrels with rib extension third bite, 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights, Fold-up night sight, London proof at 80 Cordite and 480 grain bullet, Bushed strikers, Double triggers with the front articulated, An extended top strap over the comb, Trapdoor grip cap with spare strikers and 2 spare front sights, Original LOP at 14 11/16″ over the original 1″ Silvers pad that is removable with plugs over the tiedown screws, Cast-off for the right hand, Proper weight of 10 lbs. 13 oz., The gun with 98% coverage of typical H&H Royal scroll, The frame retains 75% of original case colors, The breech face with 95% case colors, The inside forend metal with 99% case colors, The barrels have 96% original blue, The outside barrel striking is perfect, The buttstock re-oiled professionally and remains in 98% condition, The checkering remains at 96%, The bores are excellent plus and remain in super condition and for all intents and purposes look like they did over a 100 years ago, It is smack on the face, It has a Deluxe Oak & Leather brass cornered trunk case that is more modern than the gun and has a reproduced H&H trade label. This is flat out one nice 450 #2 Royal in a very rare chambering that is seldom ever seen or heard of in a H&H. Then top it all off; it has super bores, great condition, points like a dream with the proper cast-off and is offered in one of the greatest English cartridges of all time that shoots .458″ diameter bullets all day long. This is nice stuff here, most likely the only one of its kind on the world market. ////////////////////////////// Relative to the records from Holland & Holland, it was originally to be built as a 500/450 3 1/4″ nitro express. On the original build sheet it has a memo on June 12, 1906 that it was shot with Eley’s No. 2 nitro cartridge with 80 grs cordite and a 480 grain bullet. The gun is so marked and was proved accordingly. The length of pull on the build sheet is exactly as the gun measures to this day. Another memo on August 10, 1906 mentions fitting a spare Ivory front sight and it still is there in the trap grip cap and never installed. This piece remains almost exactly as it left H&H in August 1906. It was ordered by Fusils Guinard Armuriers in Paris and there is a very strong chance it never made it to India or Africa. Also, a very good chance that the First World War interupted the intended purpose or use of this gun and it remains to this day a very well kept piece. Price: $89,000

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls:  A very early Model 21 with double triggers, extractors and splinter forearm.  This 21 appears, in all regards, to be almost completely original and untouched.  The 32” barrels are chambered 2 3/4″ and choked Mod & Full: measuring Mod (.018) and Full (.035(; the bores are perfect and barrel blue retains over 95% original blue.  The frame has bright spots on the fences and on the bottom edges..otherwise the frame has 90-93% original blue.  The back of the top tang is bright and I think the trigger guard has been “freshened”.  The wood finish is original.  No major damage or cracks; just an assortment of 70+ years of handling; checkering is smooth in spots.  Butt plate is original and in great shape.  14” LOP, 1 9/16” DAC & 2 7/8” DAH.  Weighs 8 lbs. Auction alert: a nice looking 12g Gebruder Merkel O/U…

12 Ga. MERKEL FRERES SUHL Double Barrel Over Under Shotguns
12 Ga. MERKEL FRERES SUHL Double Barrel Over Under Shotguns

Over the past few years, I’ve developed a real appreciation for German and European O/U shotguns. Continental gunmakers built some of the first breechloading, over-under shotguns. Gebruder Merkel was making O/Us as early as 1903, and the company continues to make them to this day.

The Merkel O/U you see here looks like it was made around 1952 or so. It’s a 200E, built on Blitz-style action  with double Kersten bolts. Overall, it’s a very solid gun and extremely well made. It’s on Gunbroker now and the listing ends on Sunday, 4/20 @ 8:56:14 PM ET.

12 Ga. MERKEL FRERES SUHL Double Barrel Over Under Shotguns: Straight grip. It has working cocking indicators, double triggers and auto ejectors. It has 28″ barrels the chokes are .685 on top barrel and .700 on the bottom, and the length of pull on front trigger is 14 5/8″ and 13 5/8′ to the back trigger. The weight is about 7 pounds + -. The bluing is very nice, and it still retains some of the case color. The wood is solid with no visible signs of cracking. There are some light marks on the wood work which can be seen in the photos. The bores are very bright and shiny.

My cheating heart: a 20g Merkel 200E O/U shotgun…

20g Merkel 200E O/U shotgun.
20g Merkel 200E O/U shotgun.

I love my 20 gauge Beretta 686. With 28″ barrels, a reliable single trigger, and choke tubes, it’s a hard gun to beat. And it’s great looking gun. The flat-black Onyx finish really sets off the figure in the stock, and gives the entire gun an elegant, classic look.

But this little post-WW2 Merkel 200E has my eyes wandering. I don’t know why it appeal to me. It’s probably the gun’s age. For some reason, I like old doubles. It looks like this one Merkel made in the ’50s. According to Hallowellco.com., the Model 200-E featured a  Blitz action with double Kersten locks and  underlugs with no bites. Even though my Beretta is a more practical gun, this Merkel has me wondering if it’s time to make a trade. Here’s more about it from the seller:

20 gauge Merkel 200E Double Barrel Shotgun: Kersten crossolt action, 20ga, 26″ m/IC, DT’s ejectors, fancy checkered English stock, 14 1/” LOP over buttplate, 6 lbs., 90%+ blue bbls, 40% fading receiver color, some light stock handling, tight as new

Merkel Model 201 20GA, Model 201 Ejectors, 28" barrels
Merkel Model 201 20GA, Model 201 Ejectors, 28″ barrels

Here’s a great looking over-under at a very fair price. These Merkels are extremely well made, and it’s rare to find on in 20 gauge with a straight grip, double triggers, and a nice long length of pull. The price looks very fair, too.

According to Hallowell.com, Merkel’s 201-E was the one up from the lowest-grade O/U that the company made after the war. I was built on a Blitz action with two Kersten locks and biteless underlugs. You can read more about the Merkel grades here.

Two real nice Euro O/Us: A 12 gauge Sodia and a .410 Merkel…

MERKEL, .410 Over-Under Double Barrel Shotgun, 28” bbls F/F
MERKEL, .410 Over-Under Double Barrel Shotgun, 28” bbls F/F

I have a fondness for older, European O/Us, especially for ones like you see below. The doubles have everything you need — 28″ bbls, decent dimensions — and they appear to be beautifully made and in good original condition.

One thing: I would double-check the chambers on the 12 gauge. They may have come from the factory or 3″, or someone may have bored them out. Buyer beware.

8 Bore R.B. Rhodda double rifle
8 Bore R.B. Rhodda double rifle

8 Bore R.B. Rodda Double Rifle, owned by gun writer Jack Lott: 22″ barrels have very very good bores with strong rifling and mike at .875 which indicates a rare brass case rifle, actually a 7 Bore. The rifle has non-rebounding locks that work excellently and it locks up tight on the face. This was a working rifle and has sparse engraving and shows wear as there is very little finish left, however mechanically it is excellent! The stock is solid and the wood to metal fit is very good with no proud metal. The pull is about 14 1/2″ over a black recoil pad. The steel barrels were made by Adams and Tate and have a dolls head extension. It has a lever forend with a metal grip cap and vacant metal shield let into the stock. Jack Lott shot the rifle with 10 to 12 drams of black powder and either a 1000 grain round ball or a 1250 grain conical. He commented on how well it shot with the 12 dram load. The file cut rib has one fixed rear sight. It comes with a modern round ball mold, brass cases and wads. Here is a solid 8 Bore in the rare 22″ barrel length with steel barrels with an interesting provenance with Jack Lott, featured in the Guns and Ammo publication “Big Bore Rifles” authored by Jack Lott. Price: $28,500.00

On Gunbroker.com now: a lightweight 16 gauge Merkel O/U

16 gauge Merkel Over Under Shotgun on Gunbroker.com
16 gauge Merkel Over Under Shotgun on Gunbroker.com

Sixteen-gauge O/Us are tough shotguns to find, especially ones made on true 16-gauge frames. Many of the 16g over-unders made in the last couple decades were really 12 gauge actions with smaller-gauge barrels mounted on them. That doesn’t appear to be the case with the Merkel you see here.

This double must have been made on a 16g frame. That’s the only way Merkel could have pushed the weight so low. The gun also has double triggers – a feature that makes it even more special.

If you like what you see, act now. This gun is on Gunbroker.com and the auction ends later today at 7:40:59 PM ET. Here are the vitals on it: 26 3/4″ bbls, 14″ LOP, weight just over 6 lbs. Appears to have ejectors and seller is saying that the bores are clean.
