You probably don’t know it, but Miroku is one of the largest gun makers in the world. For many years, this Japanese company made Charles Daly over unders. Since 1973 they’ve made Browning’s Citori O/U shotguns, and today they also make firearms under the Winchester brand and under their own name.

The company has also made side-by-sides, including Browning’s BSS shotguns and their own line of boxlocks and sidelock doubles. The shotgun you see here is one of the sidelocks. There’s not a lot of info out there about these guns, but I think this model was made in the 1980s. I’ve seen a couple, and they’ve both been extremely well made shotguns, and great buys, too.

Very nice set of Miroku SxS's, one 20 gauge, one 12 gauge
Very nice set of Miroku SxS’s, one 20 gauge, one 12 gauge

Here are a couple of doubles that combine two things you rarely find in the shotgun world: high quality and low prices. These SxSs were made by Miroku, a Japanese gunmaker who has been in the firearms business since 1893. In 1973 they started producing the Browning’s Citori O/Us. They also made SxSs for the company, including the BSS boxlock and a shortlived line of sidelocks.

The guns you see here are from that run of sidelocks. They are Holland & Holland pattern doubles made with excellent quality steel. The workmanship on these guns is usually excellent, and I’m sure the fit and finish on these two will impress.

Here’s more about the guns from the seller:

Set of Miroku Sidelock SxS’s, F-grade & FE, 20 gauge & 12 gauge: Both have 28″ barrels. The 12 has ejectors and the 20 has extractors. Both guns are from the early eighties and were holdovers from when Browning cancelled their contract with Miroku for the Browning Side Lock shotgun. Very well made with true 7 pin H&H style side locks. Bores are great, and pictures tell the story. Price: $4700 for pair

Bargain bird guns: This nice double doesn’t cost a fortune…

20 gauge B.C. Miroku / Charles Daly Double Barrel O/U Shotgun
20 gauge B.C. Miroku / Charles Daly Double Barrel O/U Shotgun

I like shotguns (obviously, right?) and it’s easy for me to get caught up in the stuff that I can’t afford. Even though I appreciate their quality, and the skill that goes into making them, I know my chances of  owning a pristine Purdey side-by-side or Boss over-under are pretty slim.

Fortunately, I don’t have to spend huge amounts of money to get a nice double. Neither do you.

Just check out the 20 gauge Miroku/Charles Daly O/U that you see here. It’s a good looking, well made shotgun, and it costs less than one of those ugly Benelli Super Eagle things.

People have called these O/Us the poor-man’s Citori. But I would call them the wise-man’s bargain. They’re basically the same gun at 1/2 the price. There’s nothing “poor” about making a smart deal like that.
