It shoots a 530-grain bullet and every detail step by step to load the cartridges will be provided to make it a fun gun for fir or feather. This gun remains in very stout excellent condition as it lived a life in the U. S. and not in the jungles of India where many English sporting guns got the hell beat out of them. Granted its life was America but this is dreams of tigers, ships, and palaces, fine spices and women and silk. Colonel Fosbery’s patent #7568 of June 20, 1885, was intended to make a gun capable of being fired either with shot, ball, or conical bullet. Holland & Holland gave the rifled chokebore its name, “Paradox”. Back in the day, Paradox meant “That which is contrary to received opinion; strange, but true”. H&H wanted 100-yard performance that duplicated the Express rifle at that time, and still have a gun that gave very good shot patterns. The Paradox will pattern from cylinder to improved cylinder chokes. H&H built a total of 1,463 Paradox guns, I am certain William Evans London shop built few. Price: $19,500

Best Quality Louis Brancquaert #5 Hammer 12 gauge sidelock pigeon gun with 30″ Chopper lump fluid steel barrels

Best Quality Louis Brancquaert #5 Hammer 12 gauge sidelock pigeon gun with 30″ Chopper lump fluid steel barrels: Full coverage banknote scroll with Brancquaert marking on bottom of frame, probably executed by H. Corombelle, the top Belgian engraver in this time period(1900-1910). Hidden Purdey style third fastener, sideclips, figured French walnut with no splits or cracks, original 2 5/8″ chambers, perfect bores that mike Left: .726, MWT= .028, choke=. .031″ Right: .726, MWT= .029″, choke=. 020″. Wall thickness 9″ Left= .042″ Right= .044″. Weight of gun is 7lbs. 5 ozs. Stock dimensions are 14″ LOP to a checkered butt over a  piece of walnut added to change pitch., 1 3/4″ DAC, 1 7/8″ DAH, with 3/8″ cast off for the right hand. My guess is that it may have been originally built for a woman, hence the odd original pitch. SN is 908.974. DeFourney built these guns for Brancquaert and the SN reflects this fact. The bluing appears original as barrel lettering is very sharp and there is fading case color on action, but metal is very clean and engraving sharp. Hammers are the late style low profile used on the post 1900 guns. This is a very seldom seen best quality hammer model built at the tail end of the live pigeon era. Price: $7,650*

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:
Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore: An excellent little Webley & Scott Model 728, a 28 bore double box lock ejector with 25″ barrels choked 3/4 (improved modified) in the left tube and 1/4 (improved cylinder) in the right tube. There is extensive floral scroll engraving covering the action, bottom plate, trigger guard, toplever, and forearm hardware and “WEBLEY & SCOTT” on each side of the action. There is even a flourish of floral scroll engraving on the breach end of the rib. The right tube is engraved atop the breech end “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.” and the left tube is similarly engraved “SERVICE ARMAMENT CO, RIDGEFIELD, N.J., U.S.A.” Mounted in a very nicely figured walnut stock with multi-point checkered forearm and English straight hand butt stock with teardrop flats, a vacant gold (I think) oval escutcheon at the toe and checkered butt. There are a few very small spots of finish loss and handling marks to the forearm. This dandy is ready to go in it’s original canvas covered takedown hard case complete with original trade label and all the original accessories including a pair of snap caps, an oil bottle, a two piece cleaning rod stored under the barrels, a wire brush, a patch swab, a mop, and a box of cleaning patches. Remarkable, also included is the original hang tag. This particular 728 appears to me to be a little better than usual with highly figured wood and a gold oval escutcheon near the toe. The butt is original too and hardly ever grounded as can be seen in the photos; so often these have been modified with a pad. The Model 728 is a fantastic little English hand made side-by-side gun, made before the days of mass produced CNC machined guns. This gun is slightly used – it bagged several quail and a pheasant in its one and only outing last season – but is in excellent although not quite perfect condition. The pictures tell the story. I think these guns are a great value and a good investment. I’ve seen them appreciate considerably on these pages even in just the last year. They aren’t bespoke guns but they do exhibit fine English craftsmanship. This 728 is a gun you can be proud of in any company but at a fraction of the cost of a bespoke gun. Price: $7,500*

Fox HE Super Fox 12 Gauge – 32”, 1 OF 950 MADE HIGH FACTORY CONDITION: Year 1927, 12Gauge, 9lbs 2oz, Side-by-Side, Serial Number: 31791.

12Gauge, 9lbs 2oz, Side-by-Side, Serial Number: 31791. Those interested in long range shooting likely know of the Fox HE Grade or “SUPER FOX”, the most capable long-range gun made in America, or maybe in the world!  There is a strong interest in these guns, made so by famous outdoor writer Nash Buckingham in the late 1920’s and in all of the stories written since.  There were only about 950 of these guns manufactured, and most have been altered in ways that destroy their function and value, so an unmolested Super Fox is a rare find.  The Super Fox performance is entirely dependent on the combination of the over-bored barrels, precise chambers, and special, long tapered chokes, all finely tuned by the famous barrel guru Bert Becker.  This Super Fox, sn31791 shipped in 1927, has 32” barrels with factory 3” chambers, showing the correct .738 bore diameter and 4 ½” chokes tapering to a 49 (R) and 48 (L) thousandths constriction.  Like most waterfowling guns, this Super Fox was used, but also well maintained, as it retains over 92% bold factory case color, 92% factory blue, 97% factory trigger guard blue, near perfect screws, excellent bores, no dents or dings, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, ejectors are super strong and well timed, mechanics are excellent, no cracks or repairs to the factory length wood that still retains the original finish and superb checkering, and there are the customary handling marks on the barrels and wood.  Most HE Super Fox guns have plain jane American walnut chosen for its strength.  This gun has nicely figured English walnut with nice, strong straight grain through the wrist, making it a much more handsome Super Fox than you usually see.  THIS IS AN AMAZING FIND AS THESE GUNS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS ALTERED, USED HARD, AND LACK THE SUPERB ORIGINAL CONDITION YOU SEE IN THIS GUN. The Super Fox is in such hot demand and the prices have risen so sharply as a result, this gun will go fast as it is one of the finest conditioned factory original Super Fox guns seen for sale in a very long time.  Don’t hesitate or it will be gone!  Thanks for looking at our fine guns. Price: $9,750.00

Smith “O” Grade, a “pre-1913” name given to this grade by Hunter Arms prior to 1913 (too obvious?) was a step above the Field Grade that came out in 1913 from Hunter Arms in that it had a bit nicer wood and checkering, a black ebony inlay in the forend tip, and a set of nice damascus steel barrels.  This gun, sn60594 built in 1899, is in remarkable condition for its 118 years of age, with lots of case color, perfect screws, perfect wood to metal fit, nicely figured European walnut (book says English walnut, looks like French to me), factory original checkering is excellent, no cracks anywhere, full length butt stock to the factory butt plate, 30″ damascus barrels that still retain 98% of their original black and white pattern, and tight as new mechanically.  With the long barrels and 1/2 round pistol grip, this is a great sporting clays or upland gun, and weighing 6lbs. 14oz. is not too heavy to carry all day.  They only made about 3100 of these guns in 16ga., likely less than 2500 or so left on the planet, so it is not a common gun, especially with this much factory condition remaining.  Price: $1,995

A couple classics: A 16g Ithaca NID & a 20g Fox Sterlingworth…

20 gauge Savage-Fox Sterlingworth SXS shotgun, 28" barrels
20 gauge Savage-Fox Sterlingworth SXS shotgun, 28″ barrels

Stone walls. Grown-over apple orchards. English setters.

If you’re a sucker for all the trappings of traditional grouse hunting, you’ll probably like the classic American shotguns posted here.

I’ve called the Fox Sterlingworth the gateway drug of doubles. It has been the first side-by-side for a lot of guys (including me), and it has initiated a passion that has taken over many a life.

This Sterlingworth caught my eye because it’s a 20g with 28″ and super shootable stock dimensions. It’s also priced very fairly.

16 gauge Ithaca NID Side-by-Side Shotgun
16 gauge Ithaca NID Side-by-Side Shotgun

Ithaca was one America’s most successful gunmakers, and NID was the final incarnation of their SxSs. These guns are basic and tough– like old-school F150s with crank windows and bench seats. This 16g NID is on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends tomorrow, 12/23, @ 8:26:50 AM ET.

This gun was made in 1929, 2 3/4″ chambers and shoots well, the gun is very solid and locks up tight. There is one deep scratch on the forearm, other then that the wood is really nice. The barrels and bores are excellent.
