Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25" bbls:
Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25″ bbls:

Rare Lightweight 12 ga Purdey Game Gun with 25″ bbls: You are looking at a rare and an unusual Purdey gun. Unlike this gun, most if not all “funeral” or “black” Purdey guns were sent out with the expectation that they will return to London to be finished per buyer’s taste. This gun was ordered in blued steel and gold lettering with minimal engraving. Copy of the Purdey dimension book entry for the gun and the actioner’s work order from Peter Nelson can be found in the pictures. Orginally a 2 1/2″ gun, the chambers were lengthened to 2 3/4″ (3 1/4 tons) and the gun re-proofed in London in 1986. Built on the Beesly action, this high condition self-opener ejector game gun sports 25″ barrels and an automatic safety. The gun was manufactured in 1964 and comes in its original Purdey lightweight leather motor case. Finished by Alan Dudley, stocked by Anthony Rule, barrels by Jack Aldous, and actioned by Peter Nelson. Price: $27,000*

Webley & Scott Model 720 20GA 26” English Made IN MAKERS CASE 6 Pounds!

Webley & Scott Model 720 20GA 26” English Made IN MAKERS CASE 6 Pounds! Up for sale is a very nice Webley & Scott Model 720, chambered in 20GA. This fine game gun comes housed in its original maker’s case with snap caps & rose wood cleaning rod. From the little research I have done, this was the 99th Webley to arrive in the US in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. The leather covered pad (Purdy Style) was replaced by Griffin & Howe at a cost of 750 dollars. The Action retains 98% case colors. The barrels are tight on face. The bluing on the barrels is about 95%, they do have a scratch in the finish towards the muzzle on the right barrel. The pictures show it well. The LOP from the front trigger is 14 ¾. Slight Cast Off. DAC 1 3/8. DAH 2 3/8. 26’’ Barrels with Fixed chokes of IC & Mod. Solid Game rib with mead bead. Pristine Bores & Chamber. 3’’ Chamber. Auto Ejectors. This tips the scale 6 pounds. Lust. My obsession a 20g Beretta Onyx like this …

See: Beretta Model 686 Onyx 20 GA 28” Over/Under Dbl Barrel Shotgun, MFD 1992

Here’s your chance to get one of the best upland shotguns Beretta has made. The 686 Onyx was the first shotgun I lusted after, and I still think it’s a fantastic-looking OU. This one looks like it has a fancy, upgraded walnut stock, so it’s even more impressive.

Beretta introduced the 686 Onyx around ’88 and built them until around ’99. The gun quickly gained a reputation for being a rugged, reliable OU that handled well and was easy to maintain and repair. All that’s still true today.

With original 3″ chambers and choke tubes, the one you see here can handle any kind of upland hunting you do. And because the gun doesn’t cost a fortune, you don’t have to worry about it while you’re doing it.

Will this 20g Greifelt OU falls through the cracks and go cheap?

Greifelt & Co. 20 Gauge 26” Over/Under Boxlock Dble Barrel Shotgun 1925
Greifelt & Co. 20 Gauge 26” Over/Under Boxlock Dble Barrel Shotgun 1925

Greifelt & Co. 20 Gauge 26” Over/Under Boxlock Dble Barrel Shotgun 1925

A friend of mine used to be obsessed with Gunbroker.com. He spent hours on the site every week, searching listings, zooming in on pictures, reading and re-reading descriptions.

When he saw something he liked, he would leave a reasonable bid and move on. Most of his bids don’t work out. But sometimes, a nice shotgun or rifle would fall through the cracks, and my friend would get a deal. Then he would send me a pic of the gun, tell me what he paid for it, and make me jealous.

The kind of shotgun my friend would have bid on: 20g Greifelt OU soon. With double triggers, ejectors, 2 3/4″ chambers, and a 14 3/4” LOP, he would have been thrilled to have won it.

Greifelt & Co used to be one of Germany’s top gunmakers. The company was active from 1885 to WWII. In the 1920s and 1930s, they exported shotguns and rifles to gunshops in America like Von Lengerke & Detmold and Abercrombie & Fitch.

The OUs they sent over here were some of the first modern over-under shotguns sold in the US. Those Greifelts cost much more than most Parkers, Foxes, and L.C. Smiths. But they were still cheaper than British over unders by Boss or Woodward.

5 resons the Remington-era Parkers may be the best Parkers of all …

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun
Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

Certain types of Parker shotguns are easy to find. Hammerless models from about 1900 — 1925, tired, worn out, messed with, and way beyond their prime.

But Parkers like the one you see here are different. Not only is this one in little used, all-original condition, it’s also one of the youngest Parkers you’ll find. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the no-reserve listing ends this Sunday, 10/1, @ 8:26 PM.

Made around 1941 or so, it’s was built after Remington acquired the company and one of the last 100-200 Parkers made.

Here are 5 reasons why many Parker fans think these later, Remington guns are some of the best Parkers ever built.

1. Parker built shotguns for 75 years. They learned a lot about how to improve their designs in that time. The gun you see here has all those improvements.

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun
Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

2. This gun was made with 2 3/4″ chambers, so its original forcing cones are intact (unlike older guns that have been opened up to 2 3/4″).

3. It features the same chrome-moly steel barrels that Remington used in its shotguns Many people prefer Remington chrome-moly steel to older style steel used in Meriden-era Parker shotguns.

Remington Parker VHE Grade Vulcan 16 GA Hammerless SxS Dbl Shotgun

4. Remington was known for using high-grade wood on field-grade guns. Take a look at the stock on this VHE to see what that means.

5. Unlike the really old Parkers, the late one like this have the kind of stock dimensions modern shooters can use.

Da, comrade! A legendary Cold War OU with clay-crushing in its DNA …

Russian MC-8-3 MU-8-3 12 Gauge Competition Trap & Skeet O/U DBL Shotgun
Russian MC-8-3 MU-8-3 12 Gauge Competition Trap & Skeet O/U DBL Shotgun

Bid on this a legendary shotgun that’s also a piece of Cold War history. This handmade, Soviet-era Trap/Skeet Competition OU is on Gunbroker.com now.

Some guns are built to shoot birds. Some are built to break clays. The over-under you see here was built to say F-U to the United States.

Back in during the Cold War, the USSR did all the could to win every international competition out there. For their shooting teams, that meant building a new, Soviet-designed over-under shotgun.

Russian MC-8-3 MU-8-3 12 Gauge Competition Trap & Skeet O/U DBL Shotgun
Russian MC-8-3 MU-8-3 12 Gauge Competition Trap & Skeet O/U DBL Shotgun

The name of the company that built this shotgun translates in different ways — Vostok, Baikal, TsKIB. Trap/Skeet models like the one you see here were known as MU-8s, MT-8s, MC-8s, or MTs-8.

Most of the Soviet national team used a plainer, but mechanically identical version to beat the US and win a ton of international competitions, including an Olympic Gold Medal in 1968. All these guns were handmade, perfectly balanced, and had excellent trigger pulls. They also had unique actions that were designed to never break. Models like you see here were beautifully polished and blued, hand engraved, and featured European walnut stocks with a nice reddish hue.

The 26 1/2″ Skeet bbls for this gun feature Tula chokes, which were cutting-edge shooting technology back when the gun was made. You can read more about them here: Tula Chokes, Bruce Buck, The Technoid, Shotgun Report and here MYTHS OF RUSSIAN WEAPONS. Tula-chok. Tula Choke.

The twenty-eight gauge is having a moment. Every few months, I see an article raving about the super clay-obliterating, bird-smashing powers of the 28g gun. From what those authors say, it’s all you need to hunt everything from doves and grouse to turkeys and geese.

But how much of all this is BS? (Hint, I say a lot). Last month I joined Field & Stream Editor Phil Bourjaily and Ryan Doughty from A Break in the Action to discuss.

28 gauge: Magic or Myth? A Break in the Action: For the single shotgun or single gauge hunter – is the 28g. or the 20g. the superior choice? Shotgun and shotshell manufacturers and shotgun columnists have been boasting some pretty impressive claims about the 28g. Are they realistic or is this just a way to encourage you to look over the new 28g shotguns they are selling?

Listen in as we cut through what’s fiction and get to the facts about the 28g as a legitimate, do-almost-everything choice.

Below are two of the finest 28 gauge Parkers SxSs to hit the market in a while. Both are coming up tomorrow in Guyette and Deeter’s Sept. 9/11 & 9/12 Fine Sporting Arms Auction.

Classic American gunmakers like Parker, L.C. Smith, and Ithaca built very few 28 gauge side-by-sides. Not many of those guns are around today. Either one of these doubles would be perfect for a seasoned Parker fan building his collection or someone who just wants to own a great example of a classic American shotgun.

INVESTMENT QUALITY PARKER VHE GRADE 28 GAUGE SHOTGUN W/ORIG BOX, HANG TAG & 1941 ORDER LETTER

Lot 2: INVESTMENT QUALITY PARKER VHE GRADE 28 GAUGE SHOTGUN W/ORIG BOX, HANG TAG & 1941 ORDER LETTER: Est. $50,000 – $90,000 Truly exceptional, essentially as new, retaining nearly all factory finishes on all wood and metal parts with only one or two of the faintest of handling marks, most notably two or three small dings under finish on left side panel. Bores are excellent. Mechanically excellent. Hang tag has a number of creases. Box with considerable foxing. Labels are intact, edges beginning to curl, address very difficult to read.

Lot 3: EXTREMELY RARE AND FINE PARKER BHE 28 GAUGE
Lot 3: EXTREMELY RARE AND FINE PARKER BHE 28 GAUGE

Lot 3: EXTREMELY RARE AND FINE PARKER BHE 28 GAUGE: Est. $30,000 – $50,000 Excellent. Brls with more than 95% of their original toning blue. Buttstock and forearm are excellent as expertly refinished with some minor handling marks noted. The frame and trigger plate retain about 75% of their original case color with crisp engraving. Trigger guard has been expertly restored and retains nearly all of that blue. The Infallible trigger appears to have been with the gun for much of its life and shows appropriate aging and tone, mostly likely to have been added to this gun during its early period of use. Buttplate is near mint as restored. Bores are brilliant and shiny. Mechanics are crisp.

1907 Parker A5 Quality BHE 12 Gauge Double Pigeon Gun w/ 30" Acme Steel Barrels ** Mod./Full **
1907 Parker A5 Quality BHE 12 Gauge Double Pigeon Gun w/ 30″ Acme Steel Barrels ** Mod./Full **

1907 Parker A5 Quality BHE 12 Gauge Double Pigeon Gun w/ 30″ Acme Steel Barrels ** Mod./Full **: This is a VERY classy and beautiful Parker Brothers “Quality A5” BHE 12 gauge double “Pigeon Gun” with 30″ inch “ACME” fluid steel barrels choked “Full” and a tight “Modified”.  Built in 1907, this gun originally had a capped pistol-grip stock set according to the Parker book, but is now stocked with a straight-gripped and checkered American Walnut stock set that has been on the gun at least 30 years that we know of, and likely much, much longer.  When we acquired it the butt was fit with a white spacer and a collapsed rubber pad that was hard as a rock!  We had the white spacer removed and a new pad that looks period-correct installed in place of the collapsed hard one.  The length of pull was kept the same as it would have been if the old pad wasnt collapsed, at 14″ inches from the front trigger to the end of the pad.  The rest of this spectacular gun is in exactly the same configuration as the book says it was when it left the factory, a “Quality – A5″ BHE Grade on a size 2 frame with double triggers, ejectors, and 30” inch Acme steel barrels. As you can see from the pictures, this has some spectacular factory hand-cut engraving on it consisting of floral/scroll patterns.  You will notice that there is a panel on each side and the bottom of the receiver with particularly striking engraving with more relief than the engraving around them.  These side panels are round in shape and feature two types of flowers with 7 blooms in each one.  The panel on the bottom is rectangular and is also a floral pattern, with two types of blooms and 5 total flowers surrounded by leaves.  The remainder of the engraving is made up of intricate scroll designs and some classic patterns and detail work.  The receiver still shows some faint case colors in some areas, with the protected areas having much more vivid colors.  Where there are no case colors showing on the receiver it is a very pleasing light gray color. The receiver as a whole has a very uniform patina to it, with no blotches or areas that look out of place.  The gloss blue finish on the barrels, the lower tang, the forearm hardware, and the triggerguard is handsome and bright, showing only minor wear and handling marks.  There are no eyesores or bad spots that stand-out.  All of the screws are original and in good shape, with many “timed” together and only a few that have a little marring of the slot.  All of the markings on this gun outside of the engraving are 100% legible, crisp and clear, including the water tables.  The face of the receiver is in excellent condition, with no damage to the firing pin holes and no circular primer ring erosion visible. This Parker never had a safety, as you can see the upper tang is solid and not plugged.  This is very common for a gun made for live pigeons as these competitive shoots generally are “no alibi”, meaning you do not get another chance to shoot for forgetting to take off the safety, or a safety malfunction. The barrels on this beautiful Parker are 30″ inches with a solid rib, ejectors, and 2.75″ chambers.  We measured the constriction and the barrels are choked at the very tightest end of “Modified” and a normal “Full”.  The bores in both barrels are clean and bright with no dents, bulges, pitting, or defects of any kind.  The checkered Walnut stock set is in very good condition and quite attractive.  It shows some very nice dark figure in it, and the checkering still looks sharp. Both the forearm and buttstock are free from any major damage, cracks, chips, or repairs.  Both parts are nice and tight to the gun with no wiggle, and the joints between metal and wood are tight.  This double is in perfect working order, and the barrels are perfecty on-face and lock up rock-solid to the receiver.  Price: $12,250*

Guyette and Deeters’ September Fine Sporting Arms auction starts on Monday. Session two starts the next day, and here are three nice-looking guns that look like they could be sleepers in Tuesday’s sale. Both L.C. Smiths looks like they’re in great, original condition. The first one looks brand new, and it was most likely made as a true pigeon gun. The Zanotti looks like a good, basic boxlock, the kind of SxS that would be perfect for all-around upland hunting.

If you don’t bid, you can’t win. Guyette & Deeter’s sporting arms auction is days away …

Guyette and Deeter, Firearms and decoy auctioneers
Guyette and Deeter, Firearms and decoy auctioneers

This has happened to me many times: A gun I like is coming up at an auction. I look at the estimate and think there’s no way I can get it. So I don’t bid. Then, a week later, I check the results and see the gun sold for a price well within my reach.

That’s how I’ve learned that it’s always better to leave a bid — even if it’s a low one. You never know what might happen at an auction, and to paraphrase the great Wayne Gretzky, you miss 100% of the guns you don’t bid on.

Guyette and Deeter’s September 2023 Fine Sporting Arms auction starts this Monday, 9/11. These two guns may be worth taking a chance on.

Some people dream about owning a Saville Row suit or an Aston Martin. I’ve always wanted a pair of best-quality British shotguns, just like the Holland & Holland Royals you see here. These side-by-sides are coming up Monday in Guyetter and Deeter’s Sept 2023 Fine Sporting Arms auction.

These Royals are a great mix of new and old. They were built around 1999, so they were built with modern metals, fresh wood, and steel-shot suitable choke tubes. Their barrels have original 2 3/4″ chambers, thick walls, and excellent bore measurements. The guns have never been messed with by an incompetent gunsmith or even been used in the field.

Because they’re Royals, they still have all the classic features that make these guns some of the finest in the world: The famous Holland & Holland-patent sidelock action and ejector system, the company’s hand-detachable locks, their self-opening system, and London level, best-quality construction throughout.

LOT 200: GREAT PAIR OF RECENTLY MADE HOLLAND & HOLLAND ROYAL EJECTOR DETACHABLE SIDELOCK DOUBLE TRIGGER SELF-OPENING GAME GUNS WITH CASE & CHOKE TUBES SUITABLE FOR EITHER LEAD OR STEEL SHOT SN 41366/41367:  Cal. 12ga. 2-3/4″ (Both). These fine guns were proofed in 1999 and were built with choke tubes and brl proportions to accept steel shot. The 28″ chopper lump brls are engraved “The Royal” on slightly swamped narrow game ribs. “Holland & Holland” and their Bruton Street address are engraved on tops of brls. The gold numeral “1” or “2” is inlaid at rear of rib, top lever and forend tip.  Brl flats are stamped with 1999 London nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers at 850 BAR. Importers info (“H&H” “NYNY”) is on bottom of rear lumps. Bottoms of brls are stamped with SNs and Holland patent self opening assist springs are installed. Case hardened Royal sidelock actions feature automatic safetys (“SAFE” inlaid in gold), hand detachable sidelocks with levers on left lockplates, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators and double triggers. Actions are engraved in traditional Holland Royal style which originated around 1900. This classic engraving consists of near full coverage varying size open shaded scroll within some geometric borders with “Holland & Holland” in arched device on each lockplate. Bottoms of actions are engraved “THE ROYAL”.

Blued top levers and single beaded trigger guards are engraved with matching scroll. SNs are in gold on trigger guard tangs. Very well matched attractively marbled and lightly fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstocks measure 15-5/8″ over checkered wood butts. Stocks are accentuated by traditional drop points, point pattern checkering on semi-diamond hands and vacant gold ovals. Matching splinter AB ejector forends have Anson releases. Each gun is accompanied with a zippered black leather case containing 4 extra choke tubes (2 in brls for a total of 6 for each gun), and nicely made brass tube wrenches). Guns are housed in their original makers oak and leather two gun case with brass corners and cental medallion. Interior is lined in dark green cloth. A green leather gold embossed Holland & Holland label is in lid along with a H&H 12 bore choke conversion chart which lists Hollands designation by letter for each tube with its equivalent in Europe or USA for steel or lead shot. It also indicates which tubes not to use with steel.

Case contains 2 pairs of H&H marked snap caps and a round oil bottle. Two covered compartments with brass knobs hold spare strikers, cleaning equipment in black leather wallet and key for case. A two piece H&H marked ebony and brass cleaning rod is in one barrel recess. One open compartment holds a bench cloth, the other the original hang tag for this pair of guns dated 2000, which give a retail price of $165,000. These guns would most likely cost well over $200,000 to have made today.GUN #1 WEIGHT: 6lb. 13oz. Min. Wall Thickness: .035(Rt) .034(L). Bore Diameter: .729(Rt) .728(L). CONDITION

Exceptionally fine, appear to be very close to “as new” with only a very faint firing halo on the breech face of Gun #1. Gun #2 appears essentially unfired. Gun #1 also exhibits some very light silvering on beads, which is not present on Gun #2. Both guns have been exceptionally well cared for with only a very few barely discernable minor handling and assembly marks in all wood and metal finishes. Case shows a few scuffs and marks on exterior. Leather straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is very fine with some minor rubs, accessories are very fine. A lovely pair of guns which should be usable well into the future regardless of changes in the law.

The greatest American 8 gauge ever made? See the Lefever made for a President …

EXCEPTIONAL LEFEVER 8 GAUGE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN OWNED BY PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND
EXCEPTIONAL LEFEVER 8 GAUGE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN OWNED BY PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND

This 8g Lefever is one of my favorite American doubles out there right now. It has it all — original condition, scarcity, and a celebrity connection. It’s coming on Monday in Guyetter and Deeter’s Sept 2023 Fine Sporting Arms auction.

Guyette and Deeter, Firearms and decoy auctioneers
Guyette and Deeter, Firearms and decoy auctioneers

Lefevers built some of the best-looking American shotguns of all time. If these SxSs have a downside, it’s that nice ones are extremely hard to find. Compared to other American makers, the Lefever Arms Co. didn’t build many guns. And also like the other American makers, Lefever built a handful of shotguns in 8 gauge. All that makes this Lefever is one of the most collectible out there.

EXCEPTIONAL LEFEVER 8 GAUGE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN OWNED BY PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND
EXCEPTIONAL LEFEVER 8 GAUGE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN OWNED BY PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND

Lot 49: EXCEPTIONAL LEFEVER 8 GAUGE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN OWNED BY PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND: Excellent and invertment grade. Brls retain about 90% of their plum color original blue. Forend is sound and excellent and retains more than 90% of its original finish with minor handling marks. Sideplates retain nearly all of their vivid original case color. Frame retains more than 65% of its original color with some toning at carry point. Trigger guard has drifted to gray. Triggers with traces of original gold plating remaining. Buttstock is excellent with fine checkering and retains more than 95% of its original finish. There is a tiny beginning grain separation on bottom right stock finger. Pad is a period of use aging replacement. Butt still shows its original widows peak at heel. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are excellent. Simply put, the single best 8ga Lefever known to knowledgeable collectors and should be the center piece of an American double gun collection! Est. $25,000 – $40,000

Two insanely nice 28g Parkers coming up 9/11 at Guyette & Deeters sporting arms auction …

Guyette and Deeter, Firearms and decoy auctioneers
Guyette and Deeter, Firearms and decoy auctioneers

Below are two of the finest 28 gauge Parkers SxSs to hit the market in a while. Both are coming up next week in Guyette and Deeter’s Sept.

Fantastic high original condition Parker Bros. A Grade Lifter 10ga with case- Best example I’ve seen

Fantastic high original condition Parker Bros. A Grade Lifter 10ga with case- Best example I’ve seen: An absolutely beautiful Parker lifter – this is a fantastically engraved all original Grade 6 gun (A Grade) which was the top of the line when new. The gun is a light 10ga with factory original 28″ best quality Damascus barrels. Splinter forend is beautifully checkered with fully engraved latch release. Sidelock receiver is near full coverage engraved as seen in the photos and the engraving on the top tang and the trigger guard are gorgeous and unique- most certainly the work of Harry Gough though I dont see a signature on the gun. Gold capped grip buttstock is gorgeous with great figure and checkering and terminates with its original engraved skeleton buttplate. The carving and engraving on the breech fences is as nice as I’ve seen!  The gun remains in beautiful all original condition. Barrels with about 85% original Damascus pattern with some thinning in the grip area. Stocks are excellent, sound and original with beautiful finish. Locks have around 2/3 of their original rainbow case colors remaining and frame with about 1/2 of its original color- all engraving is crispy and well defined. The lifter and trigger guard bow have a great deal of their original blue remaining as seen in the photos. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are perfect. Simply put – they don’t come any nicer than this! It’s the best light 10 lifter I’ve offered and is as fresh as a spring daisy. Price: $21,950*

It shoots a 530-grain bullet and every detail step by step to load the cartridges will be provided to make it a fun gun for fir or feather. This gun remains in very stout excellent condition as it lived a life in the U. S. and not in the jungles of India where many English sporting guns got the hell beat out of them. Granted its life was America but this is dreams of tigers, ships, and palaces, fine spices and women and silk. Colonel Fosbery’s patent #7568 of June 20, 1885, was intended to make a gun capable of being fired either with shot, ball, or conical bullet. Holland & Holland gave the rifled chokebore its name, “Paradox”. Back in the day, Paradox meant “That which is contrary to received opinion; strange, but true”. H&H wanted 100-yard performance that duplicated the Express rifle at that time, and still have a gun that gave very good shot patterns. The Paradox will pattern from cylinder to improved cylinder chokes. H&H built a total of 1,463 Paradox guns, I am certain William Evans London shop built few. Price: $19,500
