For sale: 20g Boss OU…the stuff of dreams.

I’ve never handled a holy relic. But I have handled a Boss OU.

The first time was in the summer of 1999. I was working at New England Arms, a gunshop Forbes FYI magazine said was “probably the finest gunshop in the world.” (It’s owner ended up in federal prison, but that’s another story).

Anyway, a 16g Boss OU came into the shop on a Tuesday. Even though it had problems, we sold it by Thursday. I think the price was $65,000. We mailed it out the following Monday, giving me fives days to admire it (I worked Mon-Sat). It went to some guy in Austin, TX, with “Dell” money.

12 gauge Boss O/U Double Barrel Pigeon Shotgun
A 12 gauge Boss O/U Double Barrel Pigeon Shotgun

Since then, I’ve handled Boss OUs in 12g, 16g, 20g, 28g, & .410. I’ve seen a 10g, and I know the whereabouts of a couple of 14gs. I’ve seen Boss OUs with rare, Rigby-style rising bites, and ones with the various action styles Boss used over the years for no apparent reason.

I’ve even handled one of the finest firearms Boss has ever built — and one of the finest sporting guns ever made — this unique round-action OU double rifle from 1929.

Boss & Co. Over & Under Double Rifle
Boss & Co. Over & Under Double Rifle

Boss & Co. introduced their revolutionary OU in 1909. The company is still around today and still building its legendary shotgun. I think the starting price is £115,000 or so.

BTW: If you have a Boss OU and would like to know more about it or sell it, drop me an email — Gregg@DogsandDoubles.com. I can help you out.

Extremely Rare Sir Joseph Whitworth .451 Percussion Double Rifle With Hexagonal Bore
Extremely Rare Sir Joseph Whitworth .451 Percussion Double Rifle With Hexagonal Bore

Extremely Rare Sir Joseph Whitworth .451 Percussion Double Rifle With Hexagonal Bore, and Case: Extremely Rare Sir Joseph Whitworth Percussion Double Rifle with Hexagonal .451 Bores with case, and powder flask.  Very few were produced, and it is said that no more than 50 were made in total.  Possibly fewer. Whitworth’s single-shot rifles were prized by Confederate sharpshooters during the Civil War and were also used extensively in target shooting in the apex of the percussion rifle era. Parker Hale continues to market reproductions as to the Target rifle variants with the correct Hexagonal rifling. (I took a very large bull elk, quite cleanly, with one of these reproductions, before I owned this double!)  Far fewer Sporting rifles were produced by Whitworth, and, again, fewer still of the double rifle variety. These double’s barrels were produced from a single piece of bar stock which Whitworth bored. A very unusual method of production, but extremely effective when done right, and Whitworth was one of England’s most renowned machinists.  Hex bullets can be used of course, or, more commonly, people use .451 +/- conical bullets that simply bump up to hex shape upon firing.  These are very effective hunting rifles as the bullets have great sectional density when weighing 485-500 grains or so. This provides almost the perfect combination of bullet diameter and penetration.   Bullet molds are quite common in this configuration. Most users recommend a powder charge of approximately 90-95 grains of FF Black powder.  This example shows honest use, but was maintained properly, and is in excellent condition overall, as is it’s original case. Mechanically and functionally excellent, and very good as to appearance is the way I would grade this example.  Folding sights in 100-yard increments to 500 yards. Test targets are included showing how well this rifle’s barrels are regulated at both 50 and 100 yards, and the powder charge and bullet type used to achieve these tight groups. Bores are excellent, and show little if any frosting whatsoever.  Stock shows numerous handling marks and scratches, but no cracks or splits. Stock has pistol grip cap of steel, and a silver stock oval which is not yet engraved.  Rifle’s Bluing is browning on the tang, the locks and receiver, and is quite good on the buttplate. Barrels also quite good as to blue. Some Scattered scratches and handling marks in the barrel bluing. Locks and triggers work perfectly. Ramrod correct for rifle, and there is a period powder flask in the case. Weighs 9 pounds 8 ounces, and balances well.  The pictures tell the story, but feel free to contact me with questions. Try to find another! 🙂 For those with genuine interest, more photos can be supplied. A truly special rifle for the percussion enthusiast. Thanks for looking! Price: $19,999

These Beretta over-unders are tough guns to beat. They handle well, they’re well made, they’re durable, and they’re easy to fix. With its open chokes inserted, this one can handle steel shot, too. I’ve seen these sell for $1500+. If you can get it for less than, you’ve got a deal.

What-the-what? A 12g W.W. Greener OU hammer rifle …

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

The OU rifle you see here is an oddball, a freak and weirdo. Of course, I would love to own it. Built in 1886, it’s breechloading British OU hammer rifle — the only one I’ve ever seen or hear about.

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

Hammerless over-under rifles aren’t uncommon. I’ve seen a number by Belgian and German makers and some British makers built them, too — including Boss.

According to the seller, this gun was made in 1886. That’s twenty-three years before Boss & Co patented their OU shotgun (1909), and even before Merkel started building their “Bock” hammerless OUs in the 1890s.

W.W. GREENER O/U Hammer Express 12-bore rifle Cased in O&L Mfg 1886 Very rare and very nice condition

At close to 14.75bls, it’s a beast of a gun. I’m not sure what it was made to hunt — Cape Buffalo?, Rhinos? — but judging by its condition, it never made it into the field to do it.

FAIR Rizzini NEA 500 OU 28 Gauge
FAIR Rizzini NEA 500 OU 28 Gauge

A few years after I became obsesses with doubles, I stumbled into a job at gunshop called New England Arms. Located in Kittery Point, ME, New England Arms (NEA) was the finest gunshop in the world back then (we’re talking 1999) and the SxSs and OUs they had on their floor went from Fox Sterlingworths and Parker AH-grades to Purdeys, Bosses and Fabbris.

FAIR Rizzini NEA 500 OU 28 Gauge
FAIR Rizzini NEA 500 OU 28 Gauge

New England Arms also had these OUs built by for them in Italy by Fabbrica Armi Isidoro Rizzini (FAIR). These guns were built on the classic Brescian triggerplate action and used a Boss/Woodward-inspired lockup. They were solid, reliable guns, great for hunting. The one you see here is special with it’s double triggers, straight stock, and subtly color-case hardened action. At $1,150, I don’t see how it’s not a deal.

Auction alert: 20g Browning Superposed OU …

The shotgun you see here is the only over-under I consider to be both vintage and American. Even this Superposed was made in Belgium, it was designed by John Moses Browning — one of America’s most famous gunmakers.

This 20g is coming up in Poulin Auctions Spring 2019 sale, being held 3/30/2019 – 4/2/2019.

Good gun alert: 20g Merkel 201E OU…

Merkel ~ Mod 201E ~ 20 Ga
Merkel ~ Mod 201E ~ 20 Ga

The first time I picked up one of these 20g Merkels, I almost threw it across the room. That’s because they’re far lighter than they look. They’re also far more responsive and dynamic than you would think.

The one you see here is a Model 201E. The 201s were one gun up from Merkel’s entry-level OUs. They had game-scene engraving is what separated them from the Model 200s. Both models featured Blitz actions, double Kersten locks, and double barrel lumps (without bites). With a leather-covered pad pushing the straight-gripped stock out to 14 3/4″ inches and doubles triggers, this looks like it was born to hunt grouse and woodcock.

Auction alert: 20g Beretta AS-EL, of the best doubles they made…

Beretta AS-20EL 20 gauge Over Under.
Beretta AS-20EL 20 gauge Over Under.

There are two things I hate about this auction listing, and one thing I really love.

Hate: The lousy pics and the “As Is” terms. Love: The gun (or what I can see of it)

The gun pictures is a 20 gauge Beretta AS-EL, one of the best OUs Beretta has built. Beretta started making their AS-line of boxlock over & under shotguns in 1949 and they continued turning them out into the 1960s.

Beretta built these as hunting guns, and the company offered 2 gauges (12g and 20g) and three grades (ASE, ASEL, and ASEELL). Each grade featured hand engraving and all models were build with the quality that has made these doubles so great.

This one is on Gunbroker.com now. If you like what you see, get on it right away. The listing ends today, 3/4/2019, @11:07 AM.
