W & C Scott .410 – 1926, EJECTORS, 28”, IN PROOF, NICE WOOD

W & C Scott .410 – 1926, EJECTORS, 28”, IN PROOF, NICE WOOD: Serial Number: 98002. 5lbs 1oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 1/2″, DAH 2 13/16″, DAC 1 9/16″. What a delightful find we have here with a W & C Scott and Sons baby frame .410 BOXLOCK EJECTOR GUN WITH 28” BARRELS AND A FULL-LENGTH ORIGINAL BUTTSTOCK MEASURING 14 ½” LOP TO THE HORN BUTTPLATE.  I emphasize this as most British made .410 doubleguns have short barrels and short stocks, and usually are extractor only guns built for youthful shooters or ladies.  To find an example of a “full-size” .410 from a well-known British maker with a London address on the barrels is a treasure in hand!  This gun, sn98002, was built in 1926 and is in excellent condition, STILL IN PROOF WITH 2 ½” CHAMBERS AND BORE DIAMETER OF .411.  Weighing just 5lbs. 1oz. and balanced just ahead of the hinge pin, this is a true, scaled frame, boxlock ejector.  The hard-to-find 28” barrels have tight ribs, mirror shiny bores choked F/F, with no dents or dings, newly reblacked to perfection, fit tight as new to the hinge pin and breech face, and the engraved maker’s name and address still sharp and clear on the barrels.  The action and mechanics are superb, as this is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, HAVING BEEN STRIPPED TO THE SMALLEST PART, ULTRASONIC CLEANED, EACH PART INSPECTED FOR INTEGRITY AND FUNCTION, PROPERLY LUBRICATED AND REASSEMBLED, NOW WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY.  The action retains about 30% fading factory original case color and the bottom plate retains 80% of the original blue, the ejectors are strong and timed, triggers are crisp, screws are excellent, fine English scroll engraving and fancy borders adorn the action in a most pleasant way.  The action is tight with the lever right of center.  The wood is well figured and freshly restored to perfection with hand-rubbed Truoil finish to bring out the figure.  The wood-to-metal fit is tight, the original flat-topped checkering has been cleaned up, and there are no chips or cracks anywhere.  THIS IS A GORGEOUS LITTLE BRITISH .410!  The stock dimensions are modern (see table below), and this gun is ready to shoot for another 95 years with proper care.  It is a rare find to have all the best features found in a scaled frame .410, ie 28” barrels, in proof, long LOP, ejectors, superb mechanics, and freshly restored barrels, trigger guard, and wood…there is nothing left to do but go break a few clays and then let the quail, woodcock, or other upland game realize that you are deadly with this diminutive British double.  This is an investment grade gun that you will enjoy as it continues to grow in value and demand will never cease for such a gun.  Don’t hesitate, as this one won’t last long at the fair price we are presenting here. Price: $6,750

Fox Gun Co. in Philadelphia, PA.  Most vintage side x side lovers are well-aware the 20ga. and 16ga. Fox guns are the most dynamic, lightweight, best handling American double guns ever created.  Best of all, the 16ga. guns were all built on the diminutive 20ga. frame.  This Fox A Grade, sn303595 made in 1937, is one of only 2500 Fox A Grade 16ga. guns ever made, with about 2200 remaining in existence due to loss and destruction, so there are few offered for sale.  Only 10% or so were ever made with the English style stock, or maybe a few hundred in existence.  IF YOU ARE ONE WHO LOVES STRAIGHT STOCKED UPLAND GUNS…THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO OWN THE PERFECT LITTLE FOX 16GA.!  Straight gripped guns almost never surface for sale.  In this Fox we have a solid gun with excellent screws, factory 26” number 3 weight barrels factory choked IC/IM with mirror bores, factory bore diameter, 99% rich rust blue, double ivory beads, and lots of barrel wall thickness (see tables below for specs).  The ribs are tight, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever right of center…like a new gun.  Take a good look at the photos and you will see a truly gorgeous Fox A Grade that has everything going for it.  She is one of those guns that just looks “right”.  The wood figure and finish is stunning, the wood-to-metal fit is superb, the action retains 70% factory case color and the engraving is sharp and clear, …JUST A CLASSY LOOKING FOX!  Even the genuine Silvers pad has that aged look and is fit to perfection.  Search long and hard and you will not find another Fox A Grade 16 with all these great features.  What a great upland gun choked perfect for nearly any bird on the North American continent.  Weighing just 6 1/4lbs. you can carry this gun all day over hill and dale without getting “long arms” by the end of the day.  This is a gun with enough wear on it that you will not feel bad taking it afield and shooting your vintage gun at clay targets.  This is the epitome of an investment quality Fox with desirable features, and affordability.  Price: $5,950

Purdey sidelock Over-Under 20 gauge, 30" Bbls, 2003 and mint, Teage Choke Tubes, Leather Case w/canvas cover
Purdey sidelock Over-Under 20 gauge, 30″ Bbls, 2003 and mint, Teage Choke Tubes, Leather Case w/canvas cover

Purdey sidelock Over-Under 20 gauge, 30″ Bbls, 2003 and mint, Teage Choke Tubes, Leather Case w/canvas cover: I am original buyer and owner of this Purdey sidelock 20 Gauge, Over and Under, with 30″ Barrels, Teague Chokes.  Specs were to make the ideal driven pheasant shotgun, as well as for partridge and other small bird game.  It’s a marvelous shotgun and here is the whole story on the shotgun which was ordered in 2001 and delivered in Declember 2003.  Description per the mini Purdey book included with the gun as follows: 20 Bore, Over & Under Square Bar, Trigger Single, Beaded Edge, Automatic safety, weight 6lb 8 oz, Barrels 30″, Chamber 2 and 3/4″, Rib solid matted, Chokes Teague x 6 tubes, Proof 1200 BAR, Weight of Barrels 2 lb 12 oz, Stock Pistol Grip with Metal Cap, Chequered Butt, Measurements 1 3/8 x 1 7/8, Length 15 3/8 Mid, Cast off 3/8″ Heel, Forend Slim Tapering, No oval, Case Light Tan + Canvas Outer.  Engraving Fine Rose & Scroll.  Gold Purdey name on Locks and Forend Iron; Colour Hardened Finish.  Total shells fired less than 3 boxes; used once in the field.  Gun is in excellent plus condition per photos posted here; no bad surprises!  All the little parts that Purdey delivers with shotgun are here:  Purdey engraved snapcaps, Purdey cleaning rod, Purdey mini leather holder with chamber brushes, a mini Purdey book with all specs of gun.  There is also a thumb drive with photos of the making of this shotgun in the Purdey factory in England.  Stock was hand selected in the Purdey wood room at Audley House.  Gold Purdey name on Locks each side, and on Forend iron add a touch of distinction.  The 30 inch barrels with the Teague chokes allow you many possible uses of just one gun, from open chokes for Partridge to full chokes for driven pheasant; you get to pick which of the 6 chokes you want.  I thought the 20 gauge over-under was the best option for various game events, and that would include skeet and even sporting clays.  Note in the leather case–and case was made specifically for this gun–the Teague chokes come with one small wrench which is eacy and fast to change choke tubes; each of the tubes is fitted into the case.  Also note that the case holds small silver colored bottle for oil, and small tan leather holder for barrel brushes, and the rod with Pudey naming is tucked neatly into the case, along with Purdey engraved snap caps.  The good news is that all the mini parts are here and included.   It’s a marvelous gun looking for a new home!  (PS:  Using 2017 Purdey price list, this shotgun prices out at $165,117 plus Duty $4170 Excise Tax $17,644 and shipping w/insurance $3,000. ) Price: $125,000

SuperBritte 16g OU: See how it’s like a SxS turned on its side …

Super Britte - Side Opening - 16 ga - OU - Shotgun
SuperBritte – Side Opening – 16 ga – OU – Shotgun

Of all the odd-ball shotguns I’ve handled, from Darnes and Manufrance Ideals to Lancaster 4-bbls, the SuperBritte is my favorite and the only one I would like to own. Unlike those other weird guns, the SuperBritte’s quirkiness is a benefit–instead of an impediment.

SuperBritte - Side Opening - 16 ga - OU - Shotgun
SuperBritte – Side Opening – 16 ga – OU – Shotgun

While the side-opening action and sidelever look odd, they made the gun extremely trim, lively, and easy to use. Learning how to operate a SuperBritte takes a box of shells or so. Then you discover it’s as easy to shoot as a SxS, but with pointability and precision of an OU.

SuperBritte - Side Opening - 16 ga - OU - Shotgun
SuperBritte – Side Opening – 16 ga – OU – Shotgun

A Belgian gunmaker named Theophile Britte patented the “SUPERBRITTE” side-opening OU shotgun in 1931. “Super” refers to “superimposed” (French for Over Under). Britte — obviously — his name and the name of well-known Belgian gunmaker.

SuperBritte - Side Opening - 16 ga - OU - Shotgun
SuperBritte – Side Opening – 16 ga – OU – Shotgun

The Britte gunmaking company built SuperBrittes from 1932 to 1936. Only 250 of them were completed. Sometime in the 1990s, Griffin & Howe acquired a small collection of finished SuperBritte OUs plus several 12-gauge SuperBritte action/barrel sets. I think the SuperBritte you see here is one of the original, completed guns in the batch Griffin & Howe’s acquired.

In support of my “Week of Great Guns” on Shooting Sportsman Magazine’s Instagram page (@shootingsportsmanmag), here’s today’s featured double — a 20g Krieghoff made in 1928.

KRIEGHOFF 20 BORE 1928 SUHL BEST GRADE O/U- 99% ENGRAVING w/ GAME SCENES- 30" V R Bbls.- 100% ORIG. 1928 FINISH- BEST 300 SERIES ACTION-EXC. BORE

Krieghoff was founded in 1886 as “Sempert & Krieghoff”. By the time this OU was built, the company had dropped the “Sempert” and earned a reputation for building several unique types of drillings. In the late ’50s, Krieghoff started making the Remington Model 32-inspired OU that they’re famous for today.

The Krieghoff you see here is built on a type OU action created by Merkel in the 1900s. In the 1920s and into the early 1930s, German companies like Heym, Greifelt, and Krieghoff built their own versions of Merkel’s design and exported these guns to the US. These guns were expensive and cost as much — if not more than — most high-grade Parkers and Foxes when they were new. Today, they’re not cheap, but ones in good, original condition offer you a ton of quality at a very fair price.

I’ve handled a lot guns like this Krieghoff, and two things always impress me about them.

First: they’re beautifully made. Fit and finish is great, the stock and action are well shaped, and the guns function like double costing much more.

SecondL Even though they look clunky, they handle really well. Even though this Krieghoff looks like it would be heavy, it comes in at just 6lbs 4oz. With it’s 30″ barrels, I bet it handles great. I love its double triggers, too.

The B. (Bernal) H. Dyas Department store was located on the corner of Hollywood & Vine in Hollywood, California. A 1921 history of Los Angeles recites that his sporting goods company, B. H. Dyas Company, was the largest west of Chicago. In 1919 he purchased Los Angeles’s largest department store, Ville de Paris, at Seventh and Olive Streets and it became the home of the B. H. Dyas Company with 21,000 square feet of floor space. The main store, referred to as a “sportsman’s paradise” included a rifle range, handball court, log cabins, mounted game animals and an aquarium of rainbow trout. The address also appears elsewhere as 426 West Seventh Street. It was often mentioned as “The Most Interesting Store in California”. Price: $8,750

Charles Hellis & Sons Two Inch 12 gauge London Box Lock Ejector SxS Game Gun
Charles Hellis & Sons Two Inch 12 gauge London Box Lock Ejector SxS Game Gun

Charles Hellis & Sons Two Inch 12 gauge London Box Lock Ejector SxS Game Gun: This is a rare London address high grade box lock ejector in the Two Inch 12 bore. Built on a Birmingham proved action by London Best gun makers, Charles Hellis & Sons, it has fine, full coverage London rose, or bouquet, and scroll engraving, nicely figured walnut straight grip stock with drop points and fine checkering, excellent rust blue barrels and case colored action. Most two inch 12 bores were built very plain for low cost use by young shooters and ended up in poor condition. This one is quite the opposite, a beautiful higher grade London built boxlock in fine condition with adult dimensions and no problems. Very light weight and pleasant to shoot, it weighs just 5 pounds, 7 ounces.  It has automatic ejectors, 26 inch dovetail lump barrels, double triggers, auto safety, 14-1/4” stock over an Old English recoil pad. Bores are bright and shiny with no rust and measure .732 left and right. Both barrels are choked modified at .020, leaving room for adjustment if you desire. Bluing remains excellent overall with no rust and little wear.  Case coloring remains quite strong on the action. Engraving includes fences and splinter forend iron. The name C.Hellis & Sons, Ltd. Is engraved on both sides of the action, and the name and address is also engraved on the swamped game rib as ‘Charles Hellis & Sons, Ltd, 121 & 123 Edgeware Road, Hyde Park, London W.’   Also inlaid on the rib in either sterling silver or white gold are the words’FOR 2 INCH CASE ONLY’. Serial number is 4129 and it was likely built pre war in the early 1930s. Price: $6500

Good gun alert: 28g Ruger Red Label OU, 28″ bbls….

Ruger Red Label over/under 28 gauge shotgun
Ruger Red Label over/under 28 gauge shotgun

Here’s another chance to get a deal on a great little OU. This gun is on Gunbroker.com now and the online auction ends Tuesday, 1/5/2021 @ 6:09 PM.

Ruger Red Label over/under 28 gauge shotgun

Ruger built these Red Label OUs in three gauges — 12, 20 & 28. Everyone I’ve talked to says the twenty-eight is the winner of the bunch by far. Most of the ones you see out there have 26′ barrels, so the one you see here is special with its 28″ tubes. It looks like it’s in great shape, too.

Watsons Bros 28 BORE / OVER AND UNDER / SIDELOCK / SHOTGUN
Watsons Bros 28 BORE / OVER AND UNDER / SIDELOCK / SHOTGUN

Here’s a gun you don’t see every day. It’s a British 28g sidelock OU. In the past, twenty-eights weren’t popular with British makers. Up until the 1980s or so, they built very few 28g over-unders. But in the last 40 years or so, this gauge has caught gained popularity with shooters and the makers in the UK have responded.

This gun was made by Watson Bros in1995. It doesn’t look like it was used very much. It’s a beautifully proportioned gun with a couple unique features (watch the video below to see them).

Watson Bros was founded in 1885. In 1989 the company was bought by a Purdey-trained gunmaker named Michael Louca. You can read more about all this here.

“Watson Bros. guns are made almost entirely by hand insuring individually and attention to detail, which no machine can equal.”

Holloway & Naughton 12g Sidelock Boss-style Over/Under Sidelock Ejector
Holloway & Naughton 12g Sidelock Boss-style Over/Under Sidelock Ejector

Holloway & Naughton 12g Sidelock Boss-style Over/Under Sidelock Ejector: A faithful rendition of the Boss & Co. Over/Under Sidelock Ejector patented in 1909 with the same type of bifurcated lumps and trunnion system. These are Protruding studs on the bottom barrel that lay into semi-circular slots on each side of the action. These studs act as the barrel’s lumps and require a much shallower action shape to work with the stacked barrels, giving the guns a slimmer profile. The action is color hardened with a R&S type engraving, signed by the trigger “DELAHAUT G.”, with gold lined cocking indicators and the word “SAFE” and the serial number inlaid in gold. The gun has a single non-selective mechanical trigger. Gun is very nicely stocked in with a highly figured French walnut with characteristic light honey color and very dark marbling with “fiddle back” radiating through the entire butt stock. Traditional drop points and point pattern checkering and a Woodward style grip with a trigger bow that extends to an ebony pistol grip cap. Stock has 15 ½” LOP over a checkered butt. The forend matches perfectly and uses the Boss type ejector system, also patented in 1909, with the long cocking rods housed in the with the same type of Boss extended forend iron that runs the top edge of the forend. The 30” demi-bloc barrels have a solid machine matted top rib and semi-circular Boss type rib extension. The gun has original 2 ¾” (70mm) chambers with 2006 London proof marks. The barrels are fitted with Teague chokes and carry 2009 Birmingham proof marks from when the chokes were added. Gun has most likely been fired but appears as new in a Maker’s lightweight leather “VC” case with canvas cover. Price: $42,500

Auction alert: 20g “Merkel” OU clone coming up on Sat….

LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK
LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK

I don’t know what to make of this great looking, 20g ‘Merkel’. It’s lot #2099 in Poulin Auctions Saturday, 12/12, sale.

LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK
LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK

The first time I saw this OU, I thought it was the real thing. But while it has all the features of the a genuine Merkel 304E — sidelocks, double Purdey-style bolts, double Kersten locks, scroll engraving, ejectors–and it has German nitro proofmarks, it’s actually a clone. A well-made clone, but still a clone.

LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK
LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK

So who made it? No idea. Did a couple Merkel’s gunmakers sneak parts out the door at lunch and build this gun at home? Maybe. Judging by the gun’s excellent proportions, the way the action is filed up, and great metal-to-metal fit, whoever built it knew what they were doing and probably. Germany was in tough shape after World War 2, and the people there did whatever possible to make money and survive.

LOT 2099. POST WAR NON-MERKEL MFG COPY OF A 304E SIDELOCK

If it were a real Merkel 304E, it would be worth $12,000+. Since it’s a clone, it will go for a less and give someone the opportunity to own a nice gun for a lot less money.

Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga
Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga

Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga: Consigned to Cole’s is this very nice Belgian Browning Superposed Super Light in 20 ga with 26-inch barrels.  The shotgun bears serial # 223PW02990.  The bores are excellent.  The upper barrel is choked Mod (**) and the lower is choked IC (**-).  This shotgun weighs in at 5lbs 14 oz, a true super lightweight.  The shotgun has a long tang, straight grip.  The LOP is 14 ¾” and terminates with a Decelerator recoil pad.  The stock has various minor nicks and dings from days afield.    The gun is nice and tight and there is no looseness to be found open or when in battery.  The bluing is just starting to flake from the bottom of the receiver from carry.  Some very minor loss of factory finish is observed along the tang as well.  Again, this from honest use pursuing dove and quail.  One of the best I have seen or found out here in a very, very long time. Price: $4650
