Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga
Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga

Belgian Browning Super Light Superposed 20 Ga: Consigned to Cole’s is this very nice Belgian Browning Superposed Super Light in 20 ga with 26-inch barrels.  The shotgun bears serial # 223PW02990.  The bores are excellent.  The upper barrel is choked Mod (**) and the lower is choked IC (**-).  This shotgun weighs in at 5lbs 14 oz, a true super lightweight.  The shotgun has a long tang, straight grip.  The LOP is 14 ¾” and terminates with a Decelerator recoil pad.  The stock has various minor nicks and dings from days afield.    The gun is nice and tight and there is no looseness to be found open or when in battery.  The bluing is just starting to flake from the bottom of the receiver from carry.  Some very minor loss of factory finish is observed along the tang as well.  Again, this from honest use pursuing dove and quail.  One of the best I have seen or found out here in a very, very long time. Price: $4650

Beretta 686 Onyx 20ga. 26 1/2 inch barrels

When I was a kid, I lusted for one of these. I’m certain the guys counter at L.L. Bean’s old hunting store were sick of me asking to see one every time I was in there (which was a lot). Eventually I bought one, and I’ve had a 686 in my safe for 20+ years now. From Maine to Montana, I’ve killed everything from ruffed grouse and huns to pheasants with one, and I’ve never had a mechanical issue of been let down.

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun
H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun: For a few years H&H took what was essentially a best quality Birmingham boxlock similar to a W C Scott Bowood; added H&H improvements and extra finish to make the Cavalier.  Such upgrades as a removable hinge pin for future tightening capabilities, chopper lump barrels, higher grade wood and better finishes.  It is my understanding that H&H could never market/sell the Cavalier for enough money to cover their costs, so production stopped after three years for economic reasons. This is a Holland & Holland.  The 28” chopper lump barrels are finished in a dark rust blue and are fitted with a tapered, concave smooth solid rib and just a front silver bead.  The bore diameters are as stamped, .728” with the right barrel choked .010” (IC) and the left barrel choked .020” (Mod) and minimum wall thicknesses of .035” in each. The frame in nicely finished with original case colors retaining over 85% and a blued floor plate and blued trigger guard. The handsome walnut straight hand stock has a 15” LOP over and original ½” full leather recoil pad.  There is 1 3/8” DAC, 2 ¼” DAH and 14” right hand cast.  The splinter forearm is fitted with a Deeley release. This truly delightful game gun weighs 6 lbs. 5 oz., lively and balanced perfectly between the hands. The gun comes cased with H&H accessories. SN:  5002. Price: $8,475

Great gun alert: Super rare 12g Boss OU, rising-bite action…

Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action
Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action

The sidelock, double-barrel over-under shotgun you see here is one of the holy grails of British shotguns — and one of the mysteries of British gunmaking. It’s coming up to auction tomorrow, 10/17, and it has an estimated hammer of $25,000.00 – $50,000.

Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action
Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action

Boss & Co. patented their OU action in 1909. According to the company’s website:

“Robertson did not invent the O/U shotgun, but he created an Over and Under gun that was elegant, shapely, strong and far lighter than any other on the market. Until that time Over and Under guns often hailed from Germany but were heavy and ungainly. But Robertson’s OUs were strong, lively, light and slender, marking the Boss & Co Over and Under as the best on the market as soon as it was introduced. Immediately it set the standard and became the benchmark, a celebrated design that remains unsurpassed.”

Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action
Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action

Since 1909, Boss & Co. has built around 600 over-under shotguns. Very, very few of them were built with a feature that’s on the gun being auctioned off tomorrow: A Boss-style rising-bite action.

Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action
Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action

No one knows how many OUs Boss built with its rising-bite style action. The feature  appears around 1920 and shows up on 12-gauges and 20-gauges through the ’30s (here it is on a gun they built in 1937). I’ve never seen it on a Boss OU built after WW2 (Note: Boss & Co just started building rising-bite actions again and completed one in the last year or so).

But Boss never patented their version of the rising bite. I’ve never seen any evidence that the company promoted this feature or offered it as an upgrade or an option. From what I can tell, it just appears on certain guns and then disappears.

One thing to note: While this gun was originally nitro-proofed with 2 3/4″ chambers for 1 1/4 – ounce loads, it wasn’t made to shoot modern, high-pressure/high-velocity shells. So if you buy it, do the gun a favor and use ammo like this.

Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action
Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Sidelock Shotgun with Rising Bite Action

Lot #110: Boss & Co. Best O/U 12ga Shotgun: One of England’s finest… Desirable, elegant, made for a shooter. This shotgun has simple lines yet elegant and exceptionally designed side lock. Currently, Boss & Co. only produces about 20 shotguns annually. This one was manufactured in 1919-1920, and proofed for modern shells. Solid rib barrels have a single silver bead front sight, marked with proofs, Nitro proofs and more near breech. Forend is highly ornate with metal side skirts along the back half of the top, engraved with a tight scroll and finely blued. Barrels mate with the hinge pin and special locking mechanism near top lever. Locks are engraved 1005 with fine English scroll. Top lever and trigger are blued and equally ornate. Case coloring is accented with lock pins in both a polished or bright blue. Chamber indicators have horizontal gold inlay. Auto ejectors are crisp and timed superbly. Auto safety. High grade straight English stock with oil rubbed finish completed with a checkered butt and metal plates protecting heel and toe. Choked “Full” and “Mod”, ideal for clays or pheasant. Includes original leather bound case, Boss & Co. label on inside. Factory accessories. Must ship to FFL or C&R Condition: Antique Excellent. Bluing is in the 90-95% with the loss in touch points only (lower tang, forend, top lever, etc.). Case coloring is around 40%, fences and transition areas exhibit fine color striations while side of locks is muted. Wood is excellent, hard to find imperfections, probably cleaned at some point. Mechanically excellent. Barrels and Bores are nearly blem free and mirror bright. It was made with straight stock which terminates with a blued full steel buttplate, splinter forend with wedge fastener, and 30″ Damascus barrels. The gun is an early “Pin Lifter” as seen in the photos. The gun weighs 8lbs 8oz and retains about 60% gorgeous original case color. The barrels retain about 90% original damascus pattern. Bores are very good with some minor freckles but incredibly nice for a gun of this vintage. The checkering is original and crisp. The gun retains about 90% original stock finish. There are some minor ancient grain separations at the bottom stock fingers which have been expertly repaired. The full steel buttplate retains about 40% original blue! Unheard of on a gun of this vintage. Trigger guard retains about 70% original blue, toned a bit on the bow, quite strong on the tang. European Beretta Model S55 Over Under 20 Ga Shotgun 28″ F/M Mfd 1962

Yesterday, I spotted this great little 20g S55. Gunbroker.com. It’s listed online now at Gunbroker.com and the auction ends Wednesday, 10/15, @ 9:00 PM.

It has everything you need to hunt grouse, woodcock & quail: two triggers, two barrels, good chokes, and good stock dimensions. And don’t let the sling turn you off. Over your shoulder is a great way to carry your gun — especially if you hunt over pointing dogs.

Beretta introduced it’s S-series OU shotguns in 1955. There were three models: the S55 (Silver Snipe), the S56 (Golden Snipe), and the S57 (Ruby Snipe). These OUs combined features of Beretta’s expensive, handmade ASEs and sidelock S1s with cost-cutting, mass-production techniques.

In their day, Beretta’s S55, S56, and S57 competed with OUs like the Browning Superposed. But the S55, S56, and S57 weighed less and cost less than Browning’s gun. Thanks to these differences, the Beretta’s S-line of OUs sold well.

Over time, these guns evolved into some of the best-selling OUs ever, like the Beretta 686 and the S687 Silver Pigeon.

European Beretta Model S55 Over Under 20 Ga Shotgun 28″ F/M Mfd 1962: We offer you a Beretta Model S55 Over/Under 20 gauge shotgun. It appears to be similar to their Silver Snipe shotgun. David McKay Brown Trio of 16g Side by Side Game Guns
David McKay Brown Trio of 16g Side by Side Game Guns

David McKay Brown Trio of 16g Side by Side Game Guns: Consecutively numbered, true trio of 16g round action trigger plate self-opening Side by Side game guns by Scottish maker, David McKay Brown. Each gun is built on the classic Scottish trigger plate action with its rounded bar. Each gun features two triggers, auto-safeties, color case hardening and wonderfully executed small English scroll by renowned engraver Dave Tallett. Each gun features the Maker’s name inlayed in gold on the bottom the actions. Finally, each gun is appropriately numbered “1, 2, or 3” in gold and and the word “SAFE” is also inlayed in gold. All three guns feature 29” chopper lump barrels with 2 ¾” chambers and 2002 London proof marks. All three sets of barrels are bored and choked the same at: 3/8 (.015″) and 1/2 (.020″) with smooth concave game ribs.  The guns are stocked in a lovely set of well matched stock blanks with straight hand grips and splinter forend. There is a 15″ LOP over checkered butts and the guns are cast off 1/8″.  The guns weigh a lively 6 lbs. 2 oz. and are complete in  the Maker’s three gun motor case. The guns show some signs of use, but are overall in excellent condition, tight on face, and the barrels and stocks free from any dents, bulges or cracks.  Each gun is a superb example of the classic Scottish round action game gun. According to Donald Dallas’ book, David McKay Brown, Scotland’s Gun & Rifle Maker, The definitive history authorized by David McKay Brown, (2011 Quiller Press), the three guns were finished in 2003 and are the only trio of 16g Side by Side Game Guns shown in the ledgers when the book was published. Price: $95,000

This gun was made with exceptionally nice highly figured dark wood, as per the original order.  The stock terminates with the original checkered butt, and the grip is diamond shaped which is smooth and delicate.  Initials “E.H.” in gold stock shield near toe.  Each barrel with single ivory bead.  The gun is housed in its original two barrel set case with all accessories. Overall, the gun remains in near mint original condition retaining nearly all of its original finish to both wood and metal.  Mechanics are crisp and bores are brilliant and shiny.  Price: $17,000

Francotte 20E 20 Gauge SxS - 1950, 99% CASE COLOR, MINTY!
Francotte 20E 20 Gauge SxS – 1950, 99% CASE COLOR, MINTY!

Francotte 20E 20 Gauge – 1950, 99% CASE COLOR, MINTY!, vintage firearms inc: General Specs: Francotte, Year 1950, 20 gauge, 5lbs 12oz, IC/M, LOP 14 7/16″, DAH 2 3/8″, DAC 1 1/2″, Serial Number: 89933. Auguste Francotte is world famous as a high-quality firearms maker from the gun making center of Leige, Belgium dating back as far as 1805.  Still making fine shotguns with price tags starting at $18,000, Francotte is a brand recognized and used by heads of state, business tycoons, and in some cases, the fortunate “Average Joe”. Search long and hard, you will not find another Auguste Francotte like this one.  First, this is the Model 20E, one of the higher grades A. Francotte offered in the boxlock ejector format and it has the sideplated action allowing for beautiful scroll engraving.  Second, the gun is 70 years old and RETAINS 99% OF THE FACTORY FINISH, INCLUDING ALL OF THE BOLD, VIVID, ORIGINAL BONE AND CHARCOAL CASE COLORS.  I HAVE NEVER SEEN A HIGHER CONDITION FRANCOTTE 20E!  Francotte guns are nicely built side by sides with a solid reputation for graceful looks and handling characteristics as well as rock solid dependability.  This fine Francotte, sn89933 built in 1950, has seen little use.  Beautifully hand engraved with FINE SCROLL ENGRAVING AND FOLIATE SCROLL BREECH BALLS, this is a very high-end side by side.  The wood is nicely figured European walnut showing lots of fiddleback figure and rich dark streaking, with most of the factory finish still there and the factory 28LPI hand-cut checkering in excellent condition.  There are field use marks in the buttstock wood, but all are superficial and there are no cracks or gouges in the wood.  We can restore the wood for you if you wish in a short period of time for an added cost; just ask about this in-house service we provide.  The gun weighs in at an ultra-light 5 3/4lbs. with its 26” Siemens Martin fluid steel barrels that are choked IC/M and have mirror perfect bores.  It is a very dynamic shotgun with the balance point on the hinge pin.  With the Prince of Wales style stock, it is lightning fast to the shoulder and puts a smile on your face when you handle her.  The gun is mechanically excellent with strong, well timed ejectors, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, perfect screws, crisp triggers…all in perfect working order and in need of no work at all.  THERE ARE 5 LOCKING POINTS ON THIS FRANCOTTE; A HIDDEN GREENER CROSS BOLT AT THE TOP RIB, DOUBLE UNDERLUG LOCKING BOLTS, SIDECLIPS, AND A THROUGH RECEIVER BARREL LUG, making sure the barrels are locked to the breech face laterally and vertically.  It just doesn’t get any better than that!  What a great gun for your upland pursuits, especially for the grouse and woodcock coverts and hunting over fine dogs.  She will represent well at the vintage sporting events too.  Francotte built some of the highest quality guns ever made and they are surprisingly affordable as this gun demonstrates.  Thanks for looking!  Price: $8,950

A. H. Fox/Savage Sterlingworth Deluxe Brush Model SxS Double Barrel American Shotgun
A. H. Fox/Savage Sterlingworth Deluxe Brush Model SxS Double Barrel American Shotgun

A. H. Fox/Savage Sterlingworth Deluxe Brush Model: My personal benchmark gun. Decided after it being in the safe for several years that someone else needs to own it. Will start it out here for a week and see what happens. Specs are 26″ barrels choked .013 and .020 and bores of .729 per my Skeets, and 2 3/4″ chambers and ejectors. LOP to end of wood 13 1/4″. To end of Antiflinch Pad 14 1/4″. DAC 1 5/8″, DAH 2 7/8″. Weight and this is downright lovely is 6 lb 9 oz. A 12 bore made for bird hunting as they say. Serial Number. is 122114. Call this my benchmark gun because the case colors are just about mint. Slight fading on the underside, but they are all there. Blueing is 100 percent except for some small spot right around the top rib where Dan Rossiter from Custom Stocks and Steel, believed there may have been a bit oil or whatever missed when the factory did the barrels. Gun has been apart one time and that was by Dan when he checked the internals. He added the Antiflinch pad (forgot what was on it). Bought this at a small in Va from a collector. Gun’s bores were covered in cosmoline and per the house the gun had not been fired for over 50 years (who knows). Wasn’t fired much if at all. Some flaking on the finish in spots. I’ve done nothing to the gun and its time to move it on. Pictures when the sun comes up. Serial Number: 122114, Barrel Length: 26″, Chambers: 2 3/4″, Ejectors: Yes, Condition: Excellent, Metal Condition: Excellent, Wood Condition: Small bit of flaking, Bore Condition: Mint, Triggers: 2, Gauge: 12, Butt Pad: Jostam Anti flinch, Weight: 6 lb 9 oz, Choke Left: Mod, Choke Right: IC. PS.  This is a Savage marked gun with all the best Philly Fox features.   Also had twin Ivory beads (front and rear). Price: $1,950

Online auction alert: 20g Beretta BL-4 OU shotgun …

BERETTA BL-4 20 Gauge OVER/UNDER
BERETTA BL-4 20 Gauge OVER/UNDER

Here’s your chance to get a deal on one of my all-time favorite over-under bird guns. This Beretta BL-4 has everything you need for upland hunting: 3″ chambers, ejectors, IC & Mod chokes, a single selective trigger. It looks a little used (yeah – the pics suck), but it also looks like you can get a great deal on it if you act now.

Beretta was one of the first gunmakers to offer an OU on a low-profile, Boss/Woodward-style action at a price most Americans could afford. The companies first generation of these OUs was launched in 1955. In the U.S., they were called the Silver Snipe, Golden Snipe, & Ruby Snipe.

BERETTA BL-4 20 Gauge OVER/UNDER
BERETTA BL-4 20 Gauge OVER/UNDER

They were followed by Beretta’s BL-line of OUs, which showed up in here in 1968 and were imported until 1973. Like on the Snipes, Beretta’s BL OUs used modern steels and a simple trigger plate action with dependable coil springs. The barrels were built with a unique monoblock design and the guns BL-4s came with vent ribs, automatic ejectors, and hand engraving.
