Rare Pre-War Browning Double Single Superposed OU Shotgun
Rare Pre-War Browning Double Single Superposed OU Shotgun

Rare Pre-War Browning Double Single Superposed OU Shotgun: Rare pre war Belgian Browning 12 gauge Superposed built in 1935 with double single triggers. The double single trigger concept was devised by Val Browning, John Brownings son. Each trigger is a true single trigger. All the shooter has to do is choose which barrel to fire first and then pull the same trigger again to fire the 2nd barrel. A great idea, but too expensive to build in a highly competitive market. The double single triggers were only offered for 3 years,so these guns are very hard to find. This one has 26″ solid rib barrels choked improved cylinder and modified. Thie gun is in excellent original condition retaining 95% of the original blue and wood finish. The bores are mint and free of dents or rust. The barrels are on face and lock up tightly. The stock is sound with no cracks or damage. The stock retains the original buttplate. I have fired this gun on clays and it functions perfectly. A rare piece of Browning history and a great all around shotgun for hunting or clays. Price: $2,900*

Prewar Westley Richards Best Quality Droplock 577 NE Side-by-Side Double Rifle – Game Scene Engraved – “The Crumpler”

Prewar Westley Richards Best Quality Droplock 577 NE Double Rifle – Game Scene Engraved – “The Crumpler”: Up for sale is a very rare and fine Westley Richards Droplock (hand detachable lock) ejector, game scene engraved, double rifle in the powerful .577 3” Nitro Express caliber. It has blued chopperlump Krupp steel 26” barrels engraved “WESTLEY RICHARDS 178 NEW BOND St LONDON”, “GUNMAKERS BY APPOINTMENT TO HIS MAJESTY KING EDWARD VII” as well as the following caliber markings “.577 BORE, 3 in CASE” and “100 Grs CORDITE 750 Gr BULLET”. Barrel flats also show original proofs for the full power load of 750 gr bullet and 100 gr Cordite max. The barrels feature select ejectors and matted and engraved quarter rib with ramped bead front sight and rear express sights features one standing leaf marked 100 yards and four folding leaves marked 150, 200, 250, 300 yards respectively. The massive receiver has patina’d to be mostly silver finish with nice case colors remaining only in protected areas. It features 80% English scroll coverage as well as game scene vignettes of an Indian Bear on the bottom lockplate cover and Indian Rhinoceros on the trigger guard. This rifle also features Westley Richards’ rock solid and reliable single select trigger. The bolted safety featured gold inlaid SAFE as well as BOLTED under the lockout lever. The forearm features a lever release and buffalo horn tip inlaid to a widows peak. The buttstock is a strong best grade English walnut featuring checkered side panels, attractive figure and vertical fiddle and has a beaded cheekpiece as well as gold escutcheon with rear sling swivel (front sling attachment in on the barrels) and 1” silvers pad. The solid steel grip cap still retains some attractive but faded case colors. The rifle comes cased in a modern case as shown. LOP is 15-1/8″ and weight is 13.4 lbs. Overall rifle is in VG++ original condition with some faded barrel blacking and some nicks and dings in the metal and wood but nothing that takes away from the rifle’s overall appearance. It is evident that it has been well cared for during its ~120 year history. Mechanics and bores are excellent. This rifle was made in 1904 for R. Tyader Esquire and is a near twin, including single select trigger, to the Westley Richards Droplock 577 NE rifles owned and used by famous historic figures such as author Ernest Hemingway, famed ivory hunter James Sutherland, explorer Admiral JA Baker, and actor Stewart Granger. This particular rifle was owned by Jim Wilkerson of Rifle Ranch and was documented and described by Jeff Cooper in a full, multipage, article that he wrote describing this exact rifle for the 1983 Gun Digest. In the article Mr Cooper dubbed this rifle “The Crumpler” based on John Taylor’s quote that the .577 NE will crumple a charging elephant better than any other cartridge. A copy of the article and the original manuscript is included with the rifle. This is a beautiful example of old-world British gunmaking at its finest in the premier ultimate big bore chambering made during the golden age of ivory hunters. There were very few Westley Richards 577s made prior to WWII (~37) and this is an exceptional and original example. These do not come up for sale often. Price: $62,500

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:
Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore:

Excellent all original cased Webley & Scott Model 728 Boxlock 28 bore: An excellent little Webley & Scott Model 728, a 28 bore double box lock ejector with 25″ barrels choked 3/4 (improved modified) in the left tube and 1/4 (improved cylinder) in the right tube. There is extensive floral scroll engraving covering the action, bottom plate, trigger guard, toplever, and forearm hardware and “WEBLEY & SCOTT” on each side of the action. There is even a flourish of floral scroll engraving on the breach end of the rib. The right tube is engraved atop the breech end “WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.” and the left tube is similarly engraved “SERVICE ARMAMENT CO, RIDGEFIELD, N.J., U.S.A.” Mounted in a very nicely figured walnut stock with multi-point checkered forearm and English straight hand butt stock with teardrop flats, a vacant gold (I think) oval escutcheon at the toe and checkered butt. There are a few very small spots of finish loss and handling marks to the forearm. This dandy is ready to go in it’s original canvas covered takedown hard case complete with original trade label and all the original accessories including a pair of snap caps, an oil bottle, a two piece cleaning rod stored under the barrels, a wire brush, a patch swab, a mop, and a box of cleaning patches. Remarkable, also included is the original hang tag. This particular 728 appears to me to be a little better than usual with highly figured wood and a gold oval escutcheon near the toe. The butt is original too and hardly ever grounded as can be seen in the photos; so often these have been modified with a pad. The Model 728 is a fantastic little English hand made side-by-side gun, made before the days of mass produced CNC machined guns. This gun is slightly used – it bagged several quail and a pheasant in its one and only outing last season – but is in excellent although not quite perfect condition. The pictures tell the story. I think these guns are a great value and a good investment. I’ve seen them appreciate considerably on these pages even in just the last year. They aren’t bespoke guns but they do exhibit fine English craftsmanship. This 728 is a gun you can be proud of in any company but at a fraction of the cost of a bespoke gun. Price: $7,500*

Orvis periodically creates a custom shotgun offering with “Orvis Custom” labeling and some very nice, upgraded features.  You will see these custom labeled guns made by various quality makers over the years.  This gun was produced for Orvis by Arrieta of Spain.  The Arrieta y CIA is one of the finest of the Spanish made shotguns produced in the true Basque traditions.  Michael McIntosh praises the Arrieta in his book “Best Guns” and in fact carried his Arrieta afield as much as any other gun he owned.  The Basque makers were famous for making quality “copies” of other guns, and this Arrieta is a Holland & Holland sidelock action produced to perfection.  With chopper lump barrels, removable striker discs, articulated front trigger, stocked to the fences, drop points, beaded fences, sculpted frame, cocking indicators, deep chiseled, hand chiseled engraving, perfectly struck barrels, file cut rib, you have ALL OF THE BEST GUN FEATURES AT A FRACTION OF THE PRICE!  This gun, sn37459 built in 1984 was special ordered by Orvis with the options of case colored receiver and skeleton buttplate. Weighing in at 5lbs. 13oz. and balanced on the hinge pin, she is just what you would expect of a fine sidelock 28ga. game gun…dynamic handling characteristics and lightning fast mounting for the fast flush of quail, grouse, woodcock, or the wild upland birds of the western plains.  This gun will be a delight for all day walks over hill and dale.  These guns ran over $6800 when new, and this gun has barely been carried or fired.  You might as well save hundreds of dollars and buy this one.  Cased in a nice canvas and leather case with accessories and Arrieta trade label worth over $450, the case adds a lot of value to a fine little shotgun like this small bore.  Arrieta closed its doors several years ago and there are no more being made.  You will not find a better value in a modern, Holland & Holland style sidelock small gauge gun. W & C Scott .410 – 1926, EJECTORS, 28”, IN PROOF, NICE WOOD
W & C Scott .410 – 1926, EJECTORS, 28”, IN PROOF, NICE WOOD

W & C Scott .410 – 1926, EJECTORS, 28”, IN PROOF, NICE WOOD: Serial Number: 98002. 5lbs 1oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 1/2″, DAH 2 13/16″, DAC 1 9/16″. What a delightful find we have here with a W & C Scott and Sons baby frame .410 BOXLOCK EJECTOR GUN WITH 28” BARRELS AND A FULL-LENGTH ORIGINAL BUTTSTOCK MEASURING 14 ½” LOP TO THE HORN BUTTPLATE.  I emphasize this as most British made .410 doubleguns have short barrels and short stocks, and usually are extractor only guns built for youthful shooters or ladies.  To find an example of a “full-size” .410 from a well-known British maker with a London address on the barrels is a treasure in hand!  This gun, sn98002, was built in 1926 and is in excellent condition, STILL IN PROOF WITH 2 ½” CHAMBERS AND BORE DIAMETER OF .411.  Weighing just 5lbs. 1oz. and balanced just ahead of the hinge pin, this is a true, scaled frame, boxlock ejector.  The hard-to-find 28” barrels have tight ribs, mirror shiny bores choked F/F, with no dents or dings, newly reblacked to perfection, fit tight as new to the hinge pin and breech face, and the engraved maker’s name and address still sharp and clear on the barrels.  The action and mechanics are superb, as this is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, HAVING BEEN STRIPPED TO THE SMALLEST PART, ULTRASONIC CLEANED, EACH PART INSPECTED FOR INTEGRITY AND FUNCTION, PROPERLY LUBRICATED AND REASSEMBLED, NOW WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY.  The action retains about 30% fading factory original case color and the bottom plate retains 80% of the original blue, the ejectors are strong and timed, triggers are crisp, screws are excellent, fine English scroll engraving and fancy borders adorn the action in a most pleasant way.  The action is tight with the lever right of center.  The wood is well figured and freshly restored to perfection with hand-rubbed Truoil finish to bring out the figure.  The wood-to-metal fit is tight, the original flat-topped checkering has been cleaned up, and there are no chips or cracks anywhere.  THIS IS A GORGEOUS LITTLE BRITISH .410!  The stock dimensions are modern (see table below), and this gun is ready to shoot for another 95 years with proper care.  It is a rare find to have all the best features found in a scaled frame .410, ie 28” barrels, in proof, long LOP, ejectors, superb mechanics, and freshly restored barrels, trigger guard, and wood…there is nothing left to do but go break a few clays and then let the quail, woodcock, or other upland game realize that you are deadly with this diminutive British double.  This is an investment grade gun that you will enjoy as it continues to grow in value and demand will never cease for such a gun.  Don’t hesitate, as this one won’t last long at the fair price we are presenting here. Price: $6,750

1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **

1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **: This is a very special all-original Lefever / Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Ga. double-barrel shotgun made in 1938, complete with an original November of 1975-dated factory letter. One of only 150 made in .410 gauge, this extremely-cool and beautiful little double features a case-colored receiver, a factory gloss blue finish on the barrels, 26″ inch fluid-steel barrels choked “Modified” and “Full” with 3″ inch chambers, a checkered solid rib with a red front bead sight and an ivory mid-bead, automatic ejectors (special order), a single trigger (special order), a tang-mounted automatic safety, and a point-pattern checkered American Walnut stock set with a beavertail forearm and pistol-grip buttstock.  The beavertail forearm has a push-button release and an ebony diamond inlay at the front edge, and the buttstock features a factory black pistol grip cap and a factory black serrated buttplate. While the original Lefever Arms of Syracuse, New York Discontinued operations in 1916, it was bought by the Ithaca Gun Company sometime shortly after.  In 1921 Ithaca decided to use the Lefever name to brand a high-quality but lower-cost field gun they were manufacturing, calling it the Lefever Nitro Special.  This allowed Ithaca to maintain the prestige of the Ithaca name but still produce a lower-cost shotgun.  The Lefever Nitro Special was a big success for the company and by 1934 Ithaca decided to offer an “upgraded” version of the gun, calling it the Lefever “A” Grade.  The “A” Grade guns would feature a color case-hardened frame with some minimal engraving, an improved checkered solid rib design, and a better grade of wood.  Automatic ejectors and a single trigger could be special ordered on this model for an additional cost.  The production run of the Lefever “A” Grade ran from 1934 until 1940, with a total of only 2,350 guns produced.  Out of the 2,350 made, 1,000 were 12 Gauge, 600 were 16 Gauge, 600 were 20 Gauge, and only 150 were .410 Gauge.  This particular example is serial number 301038 and is one of the 150 .410 Gauge guns made.  It was shipped in 1938 to Herbert Hearn Hardware company in Cambridge, Maryland and is listed in their records as it sits now, as a 26″ inch gun choked “Modified” and “Full” with ejectors and a single trigger.  A quick internet search turns up some old pictures of the Hearn building when it was still in business as well as some pictures of what remains of the building today (which was being restored as of 2017).  As you can see from the pictures, this very handsome little Lefever has been used but not abused.  All of the finish that remains on this shotgun is original, and it has not been altered or “improved” in any way.  It is a very classy double with lots of original gloss blue showing on the barrels and patches of case colors still showing on the receiver, particularly in the protected areas.  The factory stampings of “Lefever Arms, Branch Ithaca Gun Co. Inc. Ithaca, N.Y.” and “LEFEVER A GRADE” on the top of the chambers is still clear and legible.  All of the serial numbered parts are matching and original, including the forearm metal, receiver, and barrels.  The stock set is stamped with the serial number as well, with the beavertail forearm stamped on the underside between the barrel channels and the buttstock stamped under the tang of the triggerguard.  The bores in the 26″ inch barrels are perfect and mirror-bright.  They are free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or damage of any kind.  The stock set on this Lefever is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  All of the factory stock hardware is intact and nothing has been modified.  The checkered panels on the wrist and forearm are still clean and show only light wear.  This “A” Grade Lefever has a perfect, tight lock-up, and is perfectly “on face” with no wiggle or slop.  The single trigger, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety all work perfectly.  We have no doubt that this Lefever will function just as well today as the day it left the factory, and should do so for many more decades.   If you have been looking for a classy and collectible American-made vintage .410 double, this is your chance to get one of the rarest we have had in decades.  This Lefever Ithaca should not only be an excellent field gun that you can enjoy shooting, but an excellent long-term investment as well.  There can’t be too many of the original 150 .410’s made that are still floating around out there in original condition, much less with special order automatic ejectors and a single trigger like this one! Price: $6,500

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun
H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun: For a few years H&H took what was essentially a best quality Birmingham boxlock similar to a W C Scott Bowood; added H&H improvements and extra finish to make the Cavalier.  Such upgrades as a removable hinge pin for future tightening capabilities, chopper lump barrels, higher grade wood and better finishes.  It is my understanding that H&H could never market/sell the Cavalier for enough money to cover their costs, so production stopped after three years for economic reasons. This is a Holland & Holland.  The 28” chopper lump barrels are finished in a dark rust blue and are fitted with a tapered, concave smooth solid rib and just a front silver bead.  The bore diameters are as stamped, .728” with the right barrel choked .010” (IC) and the left barrel choked .020” (Mod) and minimum wall thicknesses of .035” in each. The frame in nicely finished with original case colors retaining over 85% and a blued floor plate and blued trigger guard. The handsome walnut straight hand stock has a 15” LOP over and original ½” full leather recoil pad.  There is 1 3/8” DAC, 2 ¼” DAH and 14” right hand cast.  The splinter forearm is fitted with a Deeley release. This truly delightful game gun weighs 6 lbs. 5 oz., lively and balanced perfectly between the hands. The gun comes cased with H&H accessories. SN:  5002. Price: $8,475

 Webley & Scott - Model 720 - 26" IC / IM - All Original
Webley & Scott – Model 720 – 26″ IC / IM – All Original

This 20g Webley & Scott Model 720 is a basic British boxlock built by one of the UK’s most famous makers. It was made to be rugged, reliable, and relatively affordable.

To that end, it was built on one of the most reliable actions ever conceived — the Anson & Deeley boxlock action. Harrington & Richardson imported them into the US in the ’70s, and back then they cost $1400 and came with a case and cleaning accessories.

Compared to the Fox, it has longer, 3″ chambers, shorter barrels, and a straight-grip stock that’s higher and longer. It’s a more modern gun and it’s cheaper, too ($3650 vs. $5900).

A H FOX, PHIL. A GRADE 20 GAUGE AUTO-EJECTORS, 100% ORIGINAL
A H FOX, PHIL. A GRADE 20 GAUGE AUTO-EJECTORS, 100% ORIGINAL

This 20g A.H. Fox A Grade is a great looking vintage SxS built by a legendary maker. It drips with the mystique that so many of us love about old American shotguns. It has great looking wood and it’s built on the reliable Fox boxlock action. It has ejectors, too.

Compared to the Webley, it has 2 1/2″ chambers, and a shorter, pistol-grip stock with a bit more drop, and longer barrels. It’s also a bit lighter. It’s also around 50 years older.
