Original or redone? You decide. A 28g Parker GHE Skeet ….

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

Welcome to another round of original or redone! I asked the same questions about this 20g GHE the other day. The answer was “all original”.

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

What do you think about this 28g Parker GHE SKEET gun?

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

At first glance, this old SxS looks pretty original. But when you look closer and do a little research, that changes.

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

Parker records show this double was made in 1936 with a beavertail forend, single trigger, 26″ barrels, and ejectors. The records also say it was made with an English-style straight-grip stock. As you can see, it now has a pistol-grip stock. Problem? Maybe.

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

Markings on the barrels that show the gun went back to Parker in 1937 for repairs. Did Parker restock it at that time? If they did restock, the stock looks barely used — unlike the barrels and the back of the triggerguard.

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

Turnbull Restorations confirmed they recolored the action. They may have reblued the triggerguard, too. The blueing on the barrels looks good, but it may have been redone (if you’re recoloring the action, why not reblue the bbls, too?).

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

That red bead on the front of the bbls is another head scratcher. It could be original Parker did offer those red beads as options back when this gun was made.

Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26"
Parker Brothers GHE Skeet SXS 28g 26″

Regardless of originality this gun still hammered down for almost $26,000. Why? Because it’s scarce, and even though it’s not all original it’s still a nice vintage American double.

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun
H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun

H&H Cavalier 12 ga. best boxlock SxS shotgun: For a few years H&H took what was essentially a best quality Birmingham boxlock similar to a W C Scott Bowood; added H&H improvements and extra finish to make the Cavalier.  Such upgrades as a removable hinge pin for future tightening capabilities, chopper lump barrels, higher grade wood and better finishes.  It is my understanding that H&H could never market/sell the Cavalier for enough money to cover their costs, so production stopped after three years for economic reasons. This is a Holland & Holland.  The 28” chopper lump barrels are finished in a dark rust blue and are fitted with a tapered, concave smooth solid rib and just a front silver bead.  The bore diameters are as stamped, .728” with the right barrel choked .010” (IC) and the left barrel choked .020” (Mod) and minimum wall thicknesses of .035” in each. The frame in nicely finished with original case colors retaining over 85% and a blued floor plate and blued trigger guard. The handsome walnut straight hand stock has a 15” LOP over and original ½” full leather recoil pad.  There is 1 3/8” DAC, 2 ¼” DAH and 14” right hand cast.  The splinter forearm is fitted with a Deeley release. This truly delightful game gun weighs 6 lbs. 5 oz., lively and balanced perfectly between the hands. The gun comes cased with H&H accessories. SN:  5002. Price: $8,475

Scarce: A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game…

Fox Skeet and Upland Game 12 bore SxS
Fox Skeet and Upland Game 12 bore SxS

I bet we would have liked Charles Davis. A dog breeder and grouse hunter, Mr Davis created “Shooting Around the Clock” back in 1920s to improve his shotgun skills and kill time between hunting seasons. By the ’30s, this game had evolved into Skeet and become the hottest shooting sport in the country. It had also become a sales opportunity many gunmakers were aiming to take advantage of.

The Sterlingworth Skeet and Upland Game Gun, was the SxS the A.H. Fox Co. made to target this new market. This model debut in company’s 1935 catalog. Here’s some info about these shotguns from the AH Fox Collectors Association website:

Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz

Here is a hard Fox to find. It’s a 16g Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game gun and it’s on Gunbroker.com now. The auction ends 8/24/2015 @9:30:00 PM ET.

The Sterlingworth Skeet and Upland Game Gun was introduced in 1935. Skeet was new sport then, having been invented in 1920 by Charles Davis, a grouse hunter from Andover, MA.

In 1926, William Harnden Foster introduced Skeet to America with an article in the February issue ofNational Sportsman and Hunting and Fishing magazine. The game boomed in popularity and by the ’30s makers  offers shotguns tailored for the sport.

Fox added the Skeet & Upland Game Gun to their line in 1935 to “…meet the demand for a moderately priced skeet and upland game double gun”. They were offered in 12, 16 & 20 gauge, and with 26″ & 28″ barrels.

BTW: For a comp, here’s a nearly-new 16g with 26″ barrels that sold a couple years ago.

Fox Sterlingworth 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz: This Fox Sterlingworth bears a Utica barrel address, was made in 1936 (SN 3726xx), has 28” barrels choked Modified and Improved Modified with 2-3/4” chambers and mid/front ivory beads, automatic safety, straight stock, extractors, 2-1/2” DAH, 1-5/8” DAC and 13-3/8” & 14-1/8 LOP. The weight is a handy 6 pounds, 7 ounces.

Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz

It retains about 65% blue with most of the thinning on the sides and a small ding in the right tube 10-1/4” from the breech that is barely visible inside. There’s also evidence of a very shallow dent on the bottom of the left tube 5” from the muzzle that seems to have been professionally removed. The bores are perfect mirrors and examination with a Hawkeye bore scope yields no indication of polishing. The frame retains 60% of original case color. The stocks are completely sound with scattered light to moderate handling marks (mostly light) and a repaired small, shallow chip on the right side of the butt plate. It is 100% on-face, lock-up is as tight as a vault (tested with the forend removed) and the top lever comes to rest well right of center. Though this gun has a short tang there are known factory examples of short tang straight stocked guns and there is absolutely no sign of it having been modified. A very nice 16 gauge that, on handling, one can immediately feel will comport itself quite well in the field.

WINCHESTER ~ MODEL 21 SKEET…PRE-WAR SxS 26″ WS1/WS2 + 30″ F/F…SST, AE…Mfd 1937

Here’s an interesting Winchester M21. It’s up for auction now Gunauction.com at No Reserve and the listing ends May 10, 2015 @ 17:09:00 PT. I can’t imagine Winchester made many 16g 21s like this. Sixteens were never very popular, especially after the first World War, and by the time this gun was made 20 gauges were catching on as the preferred smallbore to own.

WINCHESTER ~ MODEL 21 SKEET…PRE-WAR SxS 26″ WS1/WS2 + 30″ F/F…SST, AE…Mfd 1937:  NO RESERVE!! Here’s a nice, honest pre-war Model 21 Skeet grade 16-gauge with two sets of barrels. It left the factory in 1937 with the 26″ Skeet barrels choked WS-1 (right) and WS-2 (left). The 30″ barrels are choked Full & Full and were fitted at the factory a couple years after the gun was originally made. Both sets of barrels have 2-3/4″ chambers. The gun is factory fitted with a single-selective trigger, automatic ejectors, and a non-automatic safety. The gun features a pistol grip stock with checkered butt, and a beavertail forend. The LOP measures 14″; the Drop @ Comb is 1-9/16″; Drop @ Heel is 2-1/2″.

WINCHESTER ~ MODEL 21 SKEET...PRE-WAR SxS 26" WS1/WS2 + 30" F/F...SST, AE...Mfd 1937
WINCHESTER ~ MODEL 21 SKEET…PRE-WAR SxS 26″ WS1/WS2 + 30″ F/F…SST, AE…Mfd 1937

Overall condition is quite good and the gun retains most of the original factory finish. There are some normal handling marks, some finish wear to the bottom edges of the receiver, some thinning to the lower tang, and some finish wear to the rear of the Skeet barrels at the carry point. There is a tiny bit of very shallow pitting at the rear of the left skeet barrel (I need magnification to see it), but no significant deep pitting anywhere. I’d grade the original finish at about 90% on the receiver, about 90% on the skeet barrels, and about 95% on the full choke barrels. The stocks are in very good shape and are free of cracks, chips, or repairs. There are some normal handling marks, mostly to the left side and bottom of the butt. The checkering is all in good shape, not worn, and the stocks have never been sanded or refinished. This shotgun is in good mechanical condition with only one minor issue noted. When the right skeet barrel is fired by itself, the automatic ejector works more like an extractor and does not kick the shell clear (it makes the right sound, the shell just doesn’t eject). The left skeet ejector works fine and when both barrels have been fired, both shells are properly ejected. No issues with ejection on the full choke barrels. The single-selective trigger, and the safety both work properly. Bores are bright all the way around.

Included is a Cody Museum letter that verifies the configuration of the gun and that it was manufactured in 1937. The second page of the letter notes that the gun was returned to the factory in 1940 and the Full/Full barrels were tested. A very nice, very desirable Pre-War Winchester 21.

Auction Alert: 12g Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun…

12g Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun
12g Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun

Here’s a tough shotgun to find. A.H. Fox introduced their Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun in 1935 to meet the demand for the new shooting sport sweeping across the nation: SKEET.

This SxS came in 12g, 16g & 20g and 26″ barrels. It could be with or without ejectors, and if you wanted to upgrade it a bit, a Fox-Kautzky selective single trigger, a beavertail forend, a recoil pad and/or ivory sights. According to the Fox Collectors website, A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game SxS shotgun, this SxS was introduced:

12g Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun
12g Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun

“To meet the demand for a moderately priced skeet and upland game double gun we have produced the famous Fox-Sterlingworth gun in this new straight grip model with 26″ barrels bored: right skeet, cylinder, left quarter choke. This is a standard stock model possessing the features of skeet boring and stock design heretofore available only in custom-built guns.”

I owned one of these in 20g, and it was decent little double. This one would make a great all around upland gun.

12g Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun: Barrels are 26” long with skeet / ¼ choke, solid rib, and good bores. Break open double barrel shotgun. Metal retains most of its original blue and casehardened finish, Checkered walnut wood with period recoil pad. Extractors and double triggers. Mfg 1935 to 1945 SN: 160260 Condition: Very Good.

Auction alert: a 20 gauge Winchester M21 Tournament Skeet…

20 gauge Winchester M21 Tournament Skeet Double Barrel Shotgun
20 gauge Winchester M21 Tournament Skeet Double Barrel Shotgun

The Winchester M21 double barrel shotgun is a side-by-side I often overlook. Mass produced by Winchester from 1930-1959, it came out just as most American makers were easing their way out of the business.  Rugged and well made, Winchester turned out about 30,000 of them before the M21 became a special-order item through their Custom Shop in 1960.

The little 20 gauge Tournament Skeet you see here is one of the rarer models the made, and that extra set of barrels must make it extra special. Winchester M21 Tournament grades were cranked out from 1933–1944. This one was made in 1934. So is it the first 20g Tournament they made? Perhaps…

BTW: This gun is being offered at NO RESERVE. The auction ends on May 5, 2013 @ 15:00:00 PT. Here’s more about the double from the seller:

Are you getting it wrong? Five myths and misconceptions about shooting…

Orvis Shooting School, Millbrook, NY. A great place to become a better shot.

There are lot of superstitions, fairy tales and just plain non-sense in the world of shotgun shooting. If you spend any time on a skeet field or a clays course, you’ll heard plenty of it.

Writer Laurie Hart has heard plenty of it, too. In the piece excerpted below, she calls a few of them out. Click through and read the entire piece for her explanation of why each myth and misconception is pure BS.

Five Myths and Misconceptions About Shooting, by Laurie Hart, from the UK’s FieldSports magazine.

1: The tighter the choke the longer the shot string.

2: A longer shot string makes it easier to hit the target.

3: The more open the choke the bigger the pattern.

4: Shooting across and into water enables you to see the shot string.

5: Swinging very rapidly can spread the shot across the sky.

In her article, Laurie explains each of these myths and misconceptions in greater detail, and I suggest you check the whole thing out now.

Here’s another 12 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game that just hit the market.  Fox added the Skeet & Upland Game Gun to their line in 1935 to “…meet the demand for a moderately priced skeet and upland game double gun”. They were offered in 12, 16 & 20 gauge, and with 26″ & 28″ barrels.

This was delivered in 1935, so it’s one of the first Skeet & Upland Game Guns that Fox/Savage Arms made. It looks pretty used, and the price seems high. But I bet it will be done in a few days.  Guys really want these doubles, and there aren’t that many of them out there.

Here are the details on it from the seller:
