Would you pay $2,999 for this 12 gauge Arrieta SxS shotgun?

12 gauge Arrieta Double Barrel Sidelock Shotgun
12 gauge Arrieta Double Barrel Sidelock Shotgun

Do you love the idea of ordering a bespoke shotgun? A lot of people do. But there can be a downside to a having a shotgun custom made just for you: After all your anticipating and money spent, what you specified on paper may not be what arrives at your door.

That’s one reason I like used doubles. With a used shotgun, you know what you’re getting (at least once your gunsmith has had a chance to look it over). Even if you buy a side-by-side or over-under online, you should be able to get your money back in a couple of weeks if there’s a problem.

So you’re thinking about “bespeaking” a 12 gauge Spanish sidelock, I would take a long look at the Arrieta you see here instead.  I’m not sure if it’s 557, a 570, or something between. But whatever model it is, it sure looks like a good deal for $2,999 – especially when you consider that a brand  new 12 gauge 557 costs $4,999.

If you agree, now. This shotgun is at Gunauction.com, and the listing ends September 14, 2013 19:57:00 PT. Here’s more about it from the seller:

AyA, Aguirre Y Aranzabal Model No. 2 double barrel side-by-side shotgun
AyA, Aguirre Y Aranzabal Model No. 2 double barrel side-by-side shotgun

Aguirre y Aranzabal is one of Spain’s most famous gunmakers. The Model No. 2 side-by-side is one of their most popular double barrel shotguns.

AyA has been making the Holland-pattern No. 2 sidelock since the ’50s, and these side-by-sides are pretty easy to find on used. But most of the ones you see are in 12 gauge and 20 gauge. The really smallbores are harder to find, especially nice earlier ones like the 28 gauge you see here.

This nearly new 28 gauge Griffin & Howe Round Body side by side is coming up to auction on Sunday,   Jan 26, 2013 at the Daniel Auction Company in Sylvester, GA.

Griffin & Howe has been importing these spanish-made side-by-sides for a while now. I’m pretty sure they’re made by Arrieta. Brand new at G&H, this is a $9,500 shotgun. If this one auctions off for $5,000, or less, it will be a steal.

Here’s the info on it, as provided by the auctioneer: Griffine & Howe 28 gauge double barrel shotgun with case hardened receiver, beautiful floral engraving. English stock and hand carved buttplate. Condition: new in original carrying case. Estimate: $6,000 – $10,000.

Will it finally sell? An Orvis/Arrieta 20 gauge side by side…

20 gauge Orvis Upland side-by-side double barrel shotgun
20 gauge Orvis Uplander side-by-side double barrel shotgun

I think it’s going go! I’ve been watching this real nice little Orvis/Arrieta 20 gauge for a while now. It has been on Gunbroker.com for at least 6 months, and I’ve plugged it a couple of times as a great deal. But no matter what I’ve done, it just sat there. No interest.

Well, it looks like a couple smart folks are moving on it. It’s easy to see why. First off, this side-by-side has it all: sidelocks, 2-3/4″ chambers, 28″ IC/Mod barrels, 14 1/2″ LOP to a checkered butt, double triggers, and ejectors.

It’s also in real nice original condition, with almost all its color-case hardening and blueing.  And check out the stock. That’s classic Spanish walnut, and it has just enough figure to make the entire gun look great.

Good gun alert: P. Arrizabalaga 28g sidelock…

Arrizabalaga double barrel shotguns have a reputation for being some of the finest side-by-sides made in Spain. This little 28 gauge is a nice example of the kind of work they turn out. It looks like a pretty low-grade model that’s in excellent original condition. If you shoot a smaller-proportioned gun (yeah, I didn’t want to say you’re a small guy), this looks like a great deal on decent sidelock.

Breed of the Week: The Burgos Pointer

The history of the modern pointing dog is convoluted and tangled. The further into its past you go, and the more clouded its lineage becomes. People believed that Spain’s Burgos Pointer was the great-great-great-great grandaddy of them all, a dog that could trace it’s origin back to the beginnings of pointing breeds over 600 years ago.

A Burgos Pointer
A Burgos Pointer

While that’s a great story, it’s not true. The reality is that the Burgos Pointer is a much newer breed of pointing dog. But that doesn’t make its story any less interesting. I suggest you check out this post from Craig Koshyk’s blog to read the whole story on the Burgos Pointer. For the full story on fifty other great breeds, buy Koshyk’s book Point Dogs Part One: The Continentals. It’s well worth the money.

Breed of the Week: The Pachón Navarro

The Pachón Navarro, a Spanish pointing dog
Double-barrel nose on a Pachón Navarro

I’m interested in side by sides — that’s pretty obvious. So when I came across the Pachón Navarros, a  Spanish pointing dog with a double barrel nose, I was intrigued.

According to Craig Koshyk’s Pointing Dogs, Volume One: The Continentals, the Pachón Navarros trace back to the very first sporting breeds to appear around the Pyrenees Mountains, way back in the 13th century. The dogs almost disappeared in the early 20th century, but today a growing group of hunters and enthusiasts are rebuilding the breed.

You can go hear to read more about Pachón Navarros. And for the full story, along with tons of great info on a lot more hunting dogs, pick up a copy of Pointing Dogs, Volume One: The Continentals today.
