Get on this one fast. This 20g Browning BSS Sporter is priced right, and I guarantee it won’t be on the market for long.
Miroku of Japan made these boxlock SxSs for Browning, and they’re based on the classic Anson & Deeley boxlock design. Rugged and dependable, they’re only drawbacks are their weight — they are a bit heavy — and the stocks can be a bit thick.
This one’s special because it’s a Sporter, so it has a trimmer, English-style, straight-grip stock. This makes it a bit lighter than most 20g BSSs — and a bit better looking. It does look a bit used, but I don’t see any signs of abuse. If it checks out with your gunsmith, it should be a great all-around upland gun.

I’ve seen a lot of Browning BSS shotguns. A LOT. But this is the first 20g Grade II I’ve ever come across. It looks like it would be a great all-around upland gun.
Browning introduced the standard BSS (Browning Side by Side) in 1971 and built them until 1987. In ’78, the company introduced the Grade IIs. All these guns were made in Japan by Miroku, some were also assembled there while others were put together in South Korea.

Browning BSS Sporter (Straight Grip) in 20 Gauge, 28″ barrels w/ Browning Luggage Case: It would be hard to find a nicer and more desirable Browning BSS side by side than this one! This 20 gauge “Sporter” model was made in 1979 and is as nice as they come. It comes complete with the original dark brown Browning hard sided luggage case with the owner’s manual and latch keys. It has 28 inch barrels which is the longest length that Browning offered in this model, and they are the hardest length to find. This model BSS also features a straight English style grip, a single selectable trigger, automatic ejectors, and a oil finished walnut stock with checkering on the wrist and forearm. The Browning factory blue finish on the metal parts rates a conservative 98% and looks minty. Only under very close examination can you find anything to deduct some percentage points. The original factory stock set is in excellent condition and could pass for being made last week! The checkering is still sharp and it has not been altered in any way. The Browning butt plate is in excellent shape, and the shotgun pulls 14 & 1/4 inches. The condition of this Browning is nearly perfect and looks like it was never used or carried in the field. These BSS models have a reputation for being durable and nicely fit and finished. Not only are they a very attractive and classy double gun, they handle well in the field and have great balance. We share the opinion of many that you can’t buy a nicer double for the money than this model, and we think it would be next to impossible to find a BSS in any better condition than this one. Price:$2,150

Of all the world’s major gunmakers, few have been around as long as Browning and fewer have made as wide a variety of firearms. Many of Browning’s guns were built on patents created by the company’s brilliant founder: John Moses Browning. But while JM did invent everything from the M1911 pistol to the Superposed, he never came up with his own design for a SxS.
But that doesn’t mean Browning never “built” them.
In fact, Browning introduced it’s first side-by-side shotgun in 1972. It was the 12g BSS boxlock, and in 1973 the company added a 20g. These guns were actually made in Japan by Miroku and they had beavertail forends and pistol-grip stocks. The trimmer, straight gripped Sporter models came out in ’78. (BTW: So did another classic — the Bee Gees’ Night Fever). Of all these BSS guns, ones Sporters with 28″ barrels are the toughest to find.
That’s why this 20g BSS caught my eye. While it’s not cheap, it is a nice gun at a fair price. It’s also pretty light for a 20g Browning with two tubes. For those reasons, I bet it will sell pretty quickly.
20ga. Browning BSS Sporter SxS Shotgun: 28″ bbl. choked F/IC (factory choked), single select trigger, ejectors, premium grade straight stock, beavertail forearm, 6lbs, As new 99%. Price:$2,050
Browning’s BSS side-by-side shotguns are rugged, reliable doubles. Most of the ones you see have pistol grips and 26″. This one is a Sporter, the model that’s a bit lighter a lot harder to find. If you’re looking for a great pheasant / duck gun, this is it. Browning BSS Sporter 12 GA: S/S/T, 28″, 3″ Mod, Full. 98% no case. Price: $1,299.
Here’s an interesting idea: Take a 12 gauge Browning BSS Sporter, and add a set of 30″ barrels from Browning’s regular model. The results look like they would make a great target gun, and I’m sure it would be just as nice in a duck blind or a pheasant field. Considering all the work done to it, the price seems very fair, too.

Late alert: Zettlemoyer Auction Co. in Fogelsville, PA, is having a firearms auction tomorrow, 11/23 @ 10:30am. They have a number of nice doubles in the sale, including the side-by-side and over-under shotguns below:
Browning BSS shotguns were made in that period when every American want short barrels. So 98% of the ones you see out there have 26″ barrels – especially the Sporters (the ones with straight stocks, rather than pistol grips). BSS are modern guns, and they’re made with moderns steel and meant to be used with modern ammo. So this one here is pretty worry free. The only thing you might want to do is open the chokes a bit for steel ammo. Other than that, it’s ready for the field, and just about anything that flies you way.
