A special double: an A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20 gauge…

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG
A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

Gun collectors like little extras, and stuff like a shotgun’s original case, cleaning accessories, and retail hang tag will make a double much more special – and valuable. This 20 gauge Sterlingworth Deluxe has both, and it’s in nice original condition. I bet it will end up in a collector’s safe very soon.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG: A very unique set that has spent most of it’s entire life just a handful of miles from the Fox/Savage plant in Utica, NY. and was no doubt purchased/owned by a Savage employee. The gun is an A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe grade in 20 gauge. This is the most deluxe “Deluxe” that I have seen. The Sterlingworth Deluxe was catalogued with twin ivory beads and recoil pad which this gun has completely original. What sets this gun apart is the highly grained/figured walnut in the buttstock…very atypical for a Sterlingworth gun. This wood was generally reserved for the graded Fox guns, no doubt hand picked for the original buyer. The overall condition of this little Fox is excellent.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG
A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

It retains a generous 50-60% factory color case hardening, faded on the belly and forward sides of frame. The barrels and trigger guard retain most of their original factory blued finish. The barrels show some thinning and light scratching on typical carry areas. The wood is totally sound with good fit and finish. No cracks or serious mars. Light handling marks from gentle use. Most of the factory varnish remains on both buttstock and forend. All screws are virtually untouched. This gun locks up tight and lever is well right of center. It’s obvious that this 20ga Fox was carried more than it was shot which one would expect from a Northeast upland bird gun.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG
A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

I measure the barrels as follows: Right: 621 with 9 thou to 4 thou of choke…minimum wall thickness of 29 thou at the muzzle. Left: 621 with 8 thou choke… minimum wall thickness 35 thou. 2 3/4″ chambers. This gun still has its orginal factory hangtag included which is a delight. This gun originally had full choke right and improved cylinder left…a very unusual combination. Apparently the right barrel choke was opened at a later time to an IC constriction as well, making it better suited for close flushing birds. While the gun and hangtag are special in their own right, this set is complete with what is believed to be a factory Savage Arms era hardcase which was obviously built for this particular gun. Savage collectors will recognize this case as a similar type that was catalogued for the Savage Model 99 Rifle/410 Combination set.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG
Original hang tag for the A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun

This case is larger than the rifle case but wears similar hardware and has the same type of black leatherette covering. The interior is lined in red felt with separate areas for 20ga shells, cleaning rod & jags and other accessories. I have seen no reference to this type Fox shotgun case mentioned in any of the Fox literature but by virtue of this gun’s tie to Utica and special wood I have no reason to think it was not supplied as a special order to a Savage employee/Exec. with it’s similiarity to the catalogued rifle cases. This is an unique opportunity to purchase a special set that can be used and enjoyed afield. Price: $2,995.00

Good gun alert: 16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game…

Fox Sterlingworth 16 Gauge #370858 - RARE GUN, Skeet & Upland Game
Fox Sterlingworth 16 Gauge Skeet & Upland Game Gun

Of all the A.H. Fox Sterlingworth shotguns ever made, the model you see here is one of the hardest to find.  The Sterlingworth Skeet and Upland Game Gun was introduced in 1935. Skeet was new sport then, having been invented in 1920 by Charles Davis, a grouse hunter from Andover, MA.

In 1926, William Harnden Foster introduced Skeet to America with an article in the February issue of National Sportsman and Hunting and Fishing magazine. The game boomed in popularity and by the ’30s makers  offers shotguns tailored for the sport.

Very odd…A.H. Fox Sterlingworth 16g with an peculiar stock…

16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel, SxS Shotgun
16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel, SxS Shotgun

The A.H. Fox Sterlingworth  was one of the most practical doubles ever made in America. Rugged and affordable, it was a reliable SxS that gave hunters everything they needed at a great price.

Wise Americans recognized this and made the Sterlingworth a huge success. But of the 100,000+ Sterlies made, none of the ones I’ve seen have had a round-knob stock on them like the onee on this Sterlie.

Round-knob grips were special order items available on A-B-C and other graded Foxes. But that wasn’t the case with the Sterlies. Serial #363731 puts this gun around 1927. According to the AH Fox Collector’s Association,  the 1927 catalog The FOX GUN”( A.H. Fox “Wood Grain” Catalog A.H. Fox Gun Company, Philadelphia, Pa.) states: “…THE STOCK is best quality plain American Walnut, thoroughly seasoned and checkered. Full capped pistolgrip only…”

16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel, SxS Shotgun

So where did this stock come from? It sure looks original to me. So was it special ordered, or added afterwards by the factory? I’m not sure. A factory letter may solve the mystery — or it may say nothing.

This shotgun is at Gunauction.com and the listing ends October 6, 2013 @ 16:47:00 PT. If you like the stock as much as I do, you should bid on it now. Here are the details on it from the seller:

A king of condition: 16g Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe, New in Box

16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe, New in Box
16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe, New in Box

Fox Sterlingworths used to be one of the best buys in American shotguns. Hunters realized this and made it the company’s best seller. From 1910 to about 1940, the A.H. Fox and then the Savage Arms Company shipped around 140,000 of these great side-by-side shotguns to shooters throughout North America.

Most Sterlies were used hard for years. Swept across barbed-wire, smacked into rock walls by wincing owners, and carried with hope through rainy openings-days. Other Sterlies their stock cut down to fit a kid a brother and their blueing rubbed away by October after October of grimy, sweat-soaked leather guns.  Not that the guns minded.

16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe, New in Box

But today’s collectors do. So even though thousands of Sterlies have survived, few are in the kind of pristine condition that makes collectors crazy. That’s what makes the 16g Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe you see here so special. It’s also why it sold within a few hours of appearing online.

Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 16 gauge, New in Box: A Utica-Made Sterlingworth Deluxe 16 gauge, 28″ bbls, Mod & Full. Featuring factory double ivory beads and factory Jostam pad. The shotgun shows very light handling marks and was used little if at all. Nearly all of the original case color and barrel blue. Includes original box and packing material. Any Fox shotgun in this condition would nearly impossible to upgrade. Price: $4,000.00

Good gun alert: a 16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth, 30″ bbls & ejectors…

16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel Shotgun, 30" barrels, ejectors
16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel Shotgun, 30″ barrels, ejectors

Fox Sterlingworths are easy to find. That’s because A.H. Fox made a ton of them. Even the small bores — the 16 gauges and the 20 gauges — are pretty common.

Regardless of the gauge, most of the Sterlies you see out there are similar – pistol grips, non-ejectors, 26″ or 28″ barrels. So once you throw in ejectors and squeeze the barrels out to 30″, you’re dealing with a Sterlingworth that’s much harder to find–especially in 16 gauge.

Well, here is one of those hard-to-find A.H. Fox Sterlingworth SxSs in 16 gauge, with 30″ barrels and ejectors. It’s a Savage-era Fox with 2 3/4″ chambers and high dimensions, so it’s more shootable than Fox’s earlier doubles.  The price is fair, too.

Here’s more about it from the seller:

16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrels Side-by-Side Shotgun
16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrels Side-by-Side Shotgun

Fox Sterlingworths are the gateway drug of vintage doubles. A Sterly was my first side-by-side, and I was hooked on doubles forever once I shots a few pheasant with it.

The A.H. Fox Company started making Sterlingworths around 1910. The company offered them right up to its end. In that time, these shotguns were one of America’s best buys. Rugged and reliable, they came in all sorts of configurations – from the Standard model you see here to a Sterlingworth Wildfowl and Sterlingworth Brush models.

16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrels Side-by-Side Shotgun
16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrels Side-by-Side Shotgun

This 16 gauge would be perfect as is for grouse and woodcock. But be warned: If you buy it, you’re a big step closer to an addiction to old doubles.

Here’s a more about it from the seller:

Fox Sterlingworth 16GA Double Barrel Shotgun#368593: The 28″ bores are are excellent with 2 5/8″ chambers. No dents. There is a patch under the barrels, in front of the forend with light surface pitting. There are a few other spots of even lighter corrosion. This is a non-ejector gun. The pull is about 14 1/8″. There are no chips or cracks in the wood. It is excellent mechanically and test fired OK.

12 gauge A.H. Fox & Co. Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun

Here’s a Fox you rarely see: a 12 gauge Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game.

Fox added the Skeet & Upland Game Gun to their line in 1935 to “…meet the demand for a moderately priced skeet and upland game double gun”. They were offered in 12, 16 & 20 gauge, and with 26″ & 28″ barrels.

The one you see here was delivered in 1935, so it must have been one of the first Skeet & Upland Game Guns that Fox/Savage Arms made.

Hang tags for an. A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel Shotgun #66328
Hang tags for an. A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel Shotgun #66328

Twelve-gauge Fox Sterlingworths are one of the most popular American side-by-side shotguns ever made. The A.H Fox Company started making them in 1910 and by the time Savage Arms ended the line around 1942, over 110,000 Sterlingworths in 12g had been turned out. So today, good ones, and even ones with a lot of original condition, are pretty easy to find.

What is hard to find is a Sterlingworth with it’s original hang tangs, especially models from the first few years of production. That’s why this 12 gauge Sterlingworth coming up at Amoskeag Auctions caught my eye.

The pistolgrip stock and splinter forearm rate good to very good showing dings and scratches over a mottled and thinning varnish and having slightly worn and soiled checkering. The stock has a hard rubber grip cap and the original grooved buttplate providing a length of 14 1/8″. The gun features double triggers, extractors, and automatic safety. There are two hanging tags, one with the shot charge and guarantee numbered to the gun and a second which is a certificate of proof. This is an original Philadelphia gun in good working condition and having the original hanging tags is very rare indeed. ($800/1200)

20g A.H. Fox Sterlingworth, 28″, Ejectors

I put up a Good Gun Alert about this A.H. Fox Sterlingworth 20g yesterday. With some real nice original condition, 28″ bbls, and ejectors, I thought it was a great deal at just $1,399.

Well, it looks like someone else agreed. They moved on this shotgun right away and it looks it’s already sold. Good guns at good prices don’t stick around very long!

Nice looking 16 gauge Sterlingworth…

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth double-barrel shotgun
A.H. Fox Sterlingworth double-barrel shotgun

The A.H. Fox Sterlingworth is one of the most affordable of the classic American side-by-side shotguns. Thanks to their simple design and sleek lines, they’re also one of the most reliable and best looking.

If you’re looking to get into classic double barrels, this 16 gauge Sterly would be a great place to start. It appears to be in excellent condition and the price on it is more than fair.

Auction Alert: a 16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth, 30″ bbls, ejectors…

16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth shotgun, 30" bbls & ejectors
16 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth shotgun, 30" bbls & ejectors

Sixteen gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth double barrel shotguns are not hard to find — unless you’re looking for one with 30″ barrels AND ejectors.  I’m not sure how many Fox made in this configuration, but the number has to be darn small. That makes this one coming up to auction at the end of June is a pretty rare side by side.

Even though the buttstock looks messed up, the rest of the gun appears original and sound. If you’re looking to restock a Fox to fit you, or for a platform to build a totally custom gun, this one could be a great starting point. According to the auctioneer, the gun is tight and the action, blueing, and metal work is all original. They also told me that there are no dents, dings, or bulges in the barrels (just some corrosion that should clean up).

20 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel Shotgun
20 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Double Barrel Shotgun

Fox Sterlingworths have been the “gateway” double barrels for a lot of guys, including me. My first side-by-side was a 12 gauge Sterlingworth and many wild South Dakota pheasants fell to that shotgun.

If you’re looking for something more of an entry-level grouse gun, this 20 gauge Sterlingworth looks like it may go for a decent price.

It looks be in very nice, original condition. Of all the Sterlingworth, A.H. Fox made the fewest in 20 gauge  and the ones with the long tubes are even rarer. So this one’s 28″ barrels make it an even better find.

Hurry, though. This NO RESERVE  auction end on June 17, 2012 12:00:00 PT.

Auction alert: Fox Sterlingworth cutaway, Parker #170, & more…

Poulin Auction Company‘s three-day firearms auction starts this Friday and they have a bunch of interesting double barrel shotguns coming up, including Parkers, Remingtons, L.C. Smiths, Colts, Lefevers, and much more.

Fox Sterlingworth double barrel shotgun with a cutaway action
Fox Sterlingworth double barrel shotgun with a cutaway action

One of the most interesting is Lot #1046: a 12 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth with a cutaway action. This is a 1910 gun with a parker-pin style action, and it looks like it has a ton of original condition. The cutaways on the action let you look into the gun and see the cocking and firing mechanism. Pretty cool. It would be a great addition for a serious Fox collector.

This real early Parker Bros. underlifter hammergun is also very interesting. It’s serial #170 and a back action, so it was probably made around 1869.  Even though it’s real old, it’s in fair, original condition. Parkers went through a lot of changes and upgrades through the years and this is a great example of how they started out. Another must have for a serious collector.

For British stuff, there’s Lot # 1044: a nice looking Alex Henry 12 gauge boxlock ejector. This looks like an original heavy proofer for 2 3/4″ shells. The gun looks pretty decent, although I think someone may have polished up the action a bit and refinished the butt stock. I have no idea how good the barrels are and the information is not listed, so make sure you check them out before you bid on them.

In all, there are over 180 shotguns in this auction, including a lot of pumps, autos, and single shots. But there are plenty of doubles. Here are a few more that caught my eye:

A. H. Fox B Grade Double Shotgun. Cal. 12 GA

LeFever Arms Co. “DS” Grade S X S Shotgun

Parker Early Lifter Action Hammer SxS

Lots 1-600 are going off on Friday. The 1000’s are on Saturday, and the 2000’s are on Sunday
