Odd, but still decent: a 16g Fox Sterlingworth

Very nice A H FOX 16 ga 28in English Stocked gun

Over the last 20 years, I’ve owned a number of A. H. Fox shotguns, including an SP Grade Skeet & Upland Game Gun, several A-grades, Sterlingworths (including a pin gun with ejectors and a minty Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun) and a nice HE/Super Fox. I’ve sold off or traded away almost all those guns, and today, I’m not as interested Ansley’s doubles as I used to be.

But one gun I would still like to own is a 16g Sterlingworth with a straight, English-style stock. These guns were made in the Savage period and badged Skeet & Upland Game models. They’re tough to find, so when I saw this listing on Gunbroker.com, I was excited. I was thrilled when I saw the price.

But on closer inspection, I discovered this gun isn’t what I had hoped. Instead of being a Skeet & Upland Game, it’s just regular Sterlingworth that was converted to a straight grip. Whoever did the work did a nice job. They even extended the trigger guard out to make it look more “English” — something Savage didn’t bother doing on their Skeet & Upland Game guns.

Regardless, it’s a nice looking gun. And if you’re looking for a classic, American grouse gun, it’s a good deal. This online auction ends today, 7/15/2019 @ 1:54 PM EST.

Extractors, long trigger tang, White front bead and mid-bead. 1 7/8″ DAC, 3″ DAH, 14 3/8″ LOP. Clean bores, perfect mechanicals. Choked IM and a tight Full. A svelte 6lbs 7 oz.

Here’s another one of these awesome OUs. These doubles are magic wands in the grouse woods. Most of the ones I see have pretty poor wood — but not this one. The 28″ barrels and straight grip are also hard to find.

Ruger Red Label 28g, 28″ bbls, Straigh English Grip, 1997: This is an early gRed Label in a hard to find configuration. It comes with an english stock, 28″ barrels, 2 1/2″ drop and a 14 1/4″ LOP. Gun is about as nice as it gets. It comes with a very nice leather case with accessories and wooden cleaning rod as seen. Comes with 5 choke tubes.

In 1984, America’s most famous double-barrel shotguns was reborn as the Parker Reproduction by Winchester. Built in Japan until 1989, these side-by-sides were offered for sale until around 1997. Since then, they’ve gained a following and their prices have risen steadily.

Parker Bros. DHE DBL 12 Ga. Hammerless Pigeon Gun #143296

Pigeon Gun…I’m always suspicious when I hear those words. Dealers love to them as a way to jack up the prices on any heavy twelve gauge shotgun, and a lot of time the words are misapplied to side-by-sides and O/Us that were really made as heavy game guns or even waterfowlers.

That being said, I’m 99% sure the Parker you see here is the real thing: A genuine American Pigeon shotgun. With 34″ barrels, a high, straight-grip stock, and no safety, it has all the features you would expect in a SxS custom made for the pigeon ring.

Wehrly’s Auction Service in Glen Rock, PA, has this shotgun and the auction begins on September 21, 2013, 8:30 AM EST.

12 gauge Beretta/ Cole Custom 686 Onyx O/U shotgun

If I had to pick one double for all my bird hunting, it would this 12 gauge Beretta/ Cole Custom 686 Onyx Over Under. With 28″ barrels, screw-in choke tubes, and double triggers, it could do it all from grouse in Maine to pheasants in the Dakotas.

Cole Gunsmithing in Harpswell, ME, has been turning out custom Beretta O/Us for a while now. If you went to them and ordered one like this today, it would probably run you $3,500- $4,000. That means this one is a pretty good deal at
$2,795.
