Old and new: Great looking 20 gauge doubles…

When I first got into doubles, twenty-gauge shotguns weren’t my thing. I was more interested in 12 gauges and — my favorites — sixteens. But as I’ve aged, I’ve earned a respect twenties. Ammo is easy to find for them, most of them are lightweight, and the throw enough lead to kill the birds I hunt most of the time.

The four 20 gauge shotguns listed below are both and unusual and unusually versatile. Check them out now.

W&C. Scott & Sons 20 Bore Hammergun in Excellent Condition
W&C. Scott & Sons 20 Bore Hammergun in Excellent Condition

W&C. Scott & Sons 20 Bore Hammergun in Excellent Condition: This little gun has a lot of character. It has great lines and handles like a wand. My photos don’t do justice to the gun. The finishes are much better than the photos suggest. The gun was refurbished by Keith & Cody Kearcher in Bend Oregon. The case coloring is original and is fading in the usual areas. The bores are bright and shiny with no visible imperfections. Lock-up is tight with or without the forend attached. I have used this gun on pheasants with great success. I use RST 2&1/2 inch loads. These are light Smokeless loads. Stock dimensions are excellent for the average shooter. Collectors are aware that small bore English guns are rare. This is especially true of W&C, Scott small bores. I have only encountered 3 in over 40 years of collecting Scott guns. Here are the specifications on this gun: Barrel length =28 inches. LOP from front trigger=14&1/2 inches. Chokes are Cylinder and Cylinder Weight is 5 & 3/4 pounds. Serial # is 37622. Date of Manufacture is 1885. Price: $3,250

BROWNING – Superposed – Superlight – 20ga – O/U – All Original – Ready for the Field

While winter may is coming for Game of Thrones fans, us bird hunters have a better time of year around the corner: Fall. And if you’re chasing grouse, quail, woodcock this season, here’s the perfect OU to get things done.

Of all the Superposed shotguns Browning made, Superlight models were the trimmest. This one checks all the boxes for what a do-it-all upland gun should be: Modern dimensions, 2 3/4″ chamber, time-tested design, reliable single trigger, straight grip, lightweight. On top of all this, it’s priced very fairly and it’s just old enough to have a bit of character all its own.

Browning Citori Superlight 16ga. with 26" invector choked barrel
Browning Citori Superlight 16ga. with 26″ invector choked barrel

Sixteen-gauge over unders are not easy shotguns to find, especially ones in nearly-new, all original condition. That’s why this Browning Citori caught my eye. It’s a well made gun in great shape, and it’s in the greatest gauge ever made.

I like sixteens. Because they tend to be smaller than twelves but bigger than twenties, they fit me well and they’re lightweight without being too light. And the one ounce of lead they through is plenty for all the birds I shoot.

The Browning Citori was first introduced to the American public in 1973. It was made in Japan by Miroku. You can read  more about the history of the Browning-Miroku relationship here.

Browning, Belgium, Year 1972, 20 Gauge, 5lbs 11oz, O/U

The Browning Superposed has been the most notable over/under commercially produced in the world.  From its arduous beginning in the late 1920’s, to its introduction in the U.S. in 1931, the Superposed has been popular amongst shooters and collectors alike.  Adorned with various levels of engraving and decoration, this creation of genius gun designer John Browning was finally discontinued from full production in 1977 with the beginning of the “Presentation Series”.

In 1969 Browning introduced the Superposed “SUPERLIGHT” in the 20ga. and finally was born a true upland bird gun.  A typical Browning Lightning hunting model weighs about 6 1/2lbs. in 20ga.  At 5lbs. 11oz. and balanced dead on the hinge pin, this 20 bore Superlight is over 3/4lbs. lighter!  This is a truly dynamic upland bird gun, with its straight hand stock, rounded frame, and schnabel forend that can be carried all day without fatigue.  This gun, sn2736V72 has indeed been carried, as it has honest wear throughout.  Built in 1972, it is one of only 746 total 20ga. Superlight guns made between 1969 and 1977.  Highly desired by upland hunters that are in the know, these guns usually trade in the mid $4000 or more when in high condition.  With about 92% factory blue on the receiver and barrels and 98% factory finish on the stocks, the gun is still ready for the field as she sits.  Priced to sell to a guy that hunts more than he collects, this is an opportunity to own a great Browning.

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE
HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE

HOLLAND & HOLLAND 450 #2 N. E. ROYAL DOUBLE RIFLE VERY RARE CARTRIDGE in a H&H- EXC. PLUS BORES- EXC. GUN INSIDE & OUT: #19100, Holland & Holland Sidelock Royal Ejector 450 No. 2 Nitro Express Finished at the Factory on August 30, 1906. This gun is a new offering on the U. S. market in a very rare cartridge offering of the great 450 #2 chambering, It has 26″ Ejector Chopper Lump barrels with rib extension third bite, 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights, Fold-up night sight, London proof at 80 Cordite and 480 grain bullet, Bushed strikers, Double triggers with the front articulated, An extended top strap over the comb, Trapdoor grip cap with spare strikers and 2 spare front sights, Original LOP at 14 11/16″ over the original 1″ Silvers pad that is removable with plugs over the tiedown screws, Cast-off for the right hand, Proper weight of 10 lbs. 13 oz., The gun with 98% coverage of typical H&H Royal scroll, The frame retains 75% of original case colors, The breech face with 95% case colors, The inside forend metal with 99% case colors, The barrels have 96% original blue, The outside barrel striking is perfect, The buttstock re-oiled professionally and remains in 98% condition, The checkering remains at 96%, The bores are excellent plus and remain in super condition and for all intents and purposes look like they did over a 100 years ago, It is smack on the face, It has a Deluxe Oak & Leather brass cornered trunk case that is more modern than the gun and has a reproduced H&H trade label. This is flat out one nice 450 #2 Royal in a very rare chambering that is seldom ever seen or heard of in a H&H. Then top it all off; it has super bores, great condition, points like a dream with the proper cast-off and is offered in one of the greatest English cartridges of all time that shoots .458″ diameter bullets all day long. This is nice stuff here, most likely the only one of its kind on the world market. ////////////////////////////// Relative to the records from Holland & Holland, it was originally to be built as a 500/450 3 1/4″ nitro express. On the original build sheet it has a memo on June 12, 1906 that it was shot with Eley’s No. 2 nitro cartridge with 80 grs cordite and a 480 grain bullet. The gun is so marked and was proved accordingly. The length of pull on the build sheet is exactly as the gun measures to this day. Another memo on August 10, 1906 mentions fitting a spare Ivory front sight and it still is there in the trap grip cap and never installed. This piece remains almost exactly as it left H&H in August 1906. It was ordered by Fusils Guinard Armuriers in Paris and there is a very strong chance it never made it to India or Africa. Also, a very good chance that the First World War interupted the intended purpose or use of this gun and it remains to this day a very well kept piece. Price: $89,000

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls

Winchester Model 21 field 12 gauge SxS shotgun. 32″ bbls:  A very early Model 21 with double triggers, extractors and splinter forearm.  This 21 appears, in all regards, to be almost completely original and untouched.  The 32” barrels are chambered 2 3/4″ and choked Mod & Full: measuring Mod (.018) and Full (.035(; the bores are perfect and barrel blue retains over 95% original blue.  The frame has bright spots on the fences and on the bottom edges..otherwise the frame has 90-93% original blue.  The back of the top tang is bright and I think the trigger guard has been “freshened”.  The wood finish is original.  No major damage or cracks; just an assortment of 70+ years of handling; checkering is smooth in spots.  Butt plate is original and in great shape.  14” LOP, 1 9/16” DAC & 2 7/8” DAH.  Weighs 8 lbs. Price: $3700

Sorry for being MIA the past few days. Work has been a bear the past few days – 10, 11 hours a day in the office – and I haven’t had extra time or energy to do much more.  But now I’m back. And so are the good guns.

This 12 gauge Browning Superposed Superlight just came on the market and caught my eye. Except for the pad, it looks like a decent, original double, and at just $2,499.99, it also looks like a deal.

12 gauge Browning Superposed Superlight O/U Double Barrel Shotgun
12 gauge Browning Superposed Superlight O/U Double Barrel Shotgun

The Browning Superposed was the last firearm designed by John Browning, and this over-under shotgun went into production in 1931 – five years after its inventor’s death. I think the Superlights were introduced in the late ’60s and offered into the ’70s. The one you see here weighs just 6 lbs. 8 oz., so it looks like it lives up to its name.

Here’s more about it from the seller:

20g Browning Superposed Superlight, 1970, Belgium: with a straight grip, original finish, and nice, high dimensions, this is about as nice a grouse/woodcock shotgun that you can find.

12g Browning/FN Superposed, 30″, 1938: with long barrels and one of the most reliable single triggers ever made, this gun is a pheasant slayer. Check out the cool forend, too. I think those are those only found on the early Superposeds.

Couple good grouse guns at auction…

Amoskeag’s 11/19 auction has a bunch of good double barrel shotguns coming up in it. Here a couple that would be ideal in the uplands.

20g Browning Superlight – of all the classic “America” shotguns, the Belgian Brownings are the most shootable. With modern dimensions and chambers, they’re very handy guns. Most of them are heavy, though. The Superlights are the exception. In 20g, they make great upland guns.

20g Browning Superlight Shotgun
20g Browning Superlight Shotgun

20g Parker DHE – This is a nice, later Parker (1937) with a straight grip, 14 1/2″ LOP and 2 1/2″ of drop. That’s a combination you see in very few vintage American doubles, and it makes this Parker very desirable. The only drawback is that I’m sure a lot of people will be after it.
