Joseph Manton SxS Flintolock 22-bore
Joseph Manton SxS Flintolock 22-bore

Joseph Manton SxS Flintolock 22-bore: Incredibly rare 22-bore, double-barreled, flintlock Sporting Gun, initially completed in 1815 and cased complete with the original Manton parts for the field conversion to percussion ignition, ca. 1820.   Weight: 5 Lbs 12 oz.   Stock Dimensions:
14 5/8”x 1 1/8”x 2 1/8”x straight. Superb 30” rebrowned Damascus barrels with no dents or dings, excellent bores (.599”/.599”) and walls (both .060”-.033”).  Joseph Manton Patent, Platinum-lined, touch holes. Manton Patent Stepped-in, and Inverted, Breeches which allowed for faster ignition in addition to directing rainwater away from the pan and toward a rectangular drain hole in the center of the breech allowing the water to flow out a hole in the bottom of the trigger plate just in front of the trigger guard bow. The Manton Patent Elevated Top Rib is engraved, “Joseph Manton’s New Improvements by His Majesty’s Patent”. Absolutely peerless quality locks, also loaded with Manton Patented features;  Cocks, reinforced at the neck, Patent Hammers (frizzen’s), Gravitating Stops, with platinum-inlaid counterweights, to prevent the cock accidentally falling during loading with cocks inadvertently left at full cock.  In addition to all these features,  included with the gun are the parts and tools for rapid field conversion to percussion ignition (can be accomplished in under 2 minutes for each lock), likely added by Manton, ca. 1820. Locks tight and mechanically perfect in every way. Tang screw, side nail, both cock screws, and left frizzen replaced by LDA. The iron mounts are all nicely engraved in the pattern common to Joe Manton sporting guns of the late flintlock, 1815 -1817, era. The Figured Walnut stock has a repair to the head done by LDA and an old minor repair to the wood just forward of the finial on the trigger plate.  Overall,  the stock is in fine condition showing minimal wear and no abuse. The whole is cased in an ultra-rare original, two-tiered (for a pair of Manton double flintlock sporting guns), Joseph Manton case complete with all period accessories and a proper original Trade Label from the 1815-17 period listing many of the Manton Patent features found on the gun. This extraordinarily rare gun represents the ultimate development of the British flintlock sporting gun by, arguably, the greatest British Gun maker who ever lived, having all of the best innovations present and in working order on a single firearm by Joseph Manton. Overall, mechanically perfect and in fine condition throughout with traces of original finish. Price: $75,000

Grouse hunters: Here’s your dream Parker SxS…

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

Ruffed grouse hunting isn’t for sissies. There are no horse-drawn carriages to ride in or wide-open fields to stroll through, and no one pushes birds your way as you block a shelterbelt.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

If you want to chase these ruffed grouse, you need to get in the woods and get dirty. You’re going to get scratched up and bruised, and you’re going to carry your gun a lot.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

That’s why lightweight doubles are popular with experienced grouse guys.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

The Parker VH you see here is 16 gauge built on a 0 frame (frame = action, Parker actions ran from 000-frames, used on .410s and 28 gauges, to 7-frames, used on 10 and 8 gauges). It weighs just 5lbs, 13oz — lighter than a lot of 20-gauges – and about a pound less than your typical 16-gauge Parker.

Good gun alert: 12g Parker VH SxS, 1 1/2 frame …

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

I’m going to out on a limb here and say this 12g Parker VH is a nice double. While the seller doesn’t say much about the gun, it gun looks pretty original and appears to be in OK shape. Sure it has some honest wear, but that adds to the gun’s charm.

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

What I really like about this double is what it is and what it doesn’t have.

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00
12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

First, it’s a 12g on a 1 1/2 frame. Standard 12g Parkers come on No. 2 frames. That’s why they’re heavy — usually 7.5lbs+ — and too much gun for the hunting I do. The 1 1/2 frame is smaller than the 2, and twelves built on it can be a half-pound lighter. That means this Parker could weigh under 7lbs–which light for a 12g VH.

Second, it doesn’t have ejectors — which is good. Upland hunters don’t need them, and Parker ejectors aren’t great. Not having them on a SxS  makes this gun reliable and it makes it weigh a bit less.

Parker VH 16 Gauge Side-by-Side SUPER CLEAN, CRISP, UNTOUCHED GUN!
Parker VH 16 Gauge Side-by-Side SUPER CLEAN, CRISP, UNTOUCHED GUN!

Parker VH 16 Gauge Side-by-Side SUPER CLEAN, CRISP, UNTOUCHED GUN!
General Specs: Parker, year 1931, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 6oz, SxS
Serial Number: 234883
I get to see a lot of fine Parker guns in my business, and high-grade guns to boot, but this fine Parker, sn234883 built in 1931, stands out because of its CLEAN, UNMOLESTED condition.  Another nicety is that it is a full 1/4lb. lighter than most 16ga. Parkers built on the #1 frame, weighing just 6lbs. 6oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin.  Look at the wood to metal fit, the checkering, the screws…they are factory original and superb.  All the finishes, including the wood finish, are factory original and untouched.  Virtually 99% factory case color remains on the receiver, bold and vivid (keep in mind the photo flash washes out some of the vividness. The colors show better in person), and 99% factory original blue on the barrels.  There is not one crack or split or repair anywhere in the wood, and the gun measures 14 1/4″ to the factory dogs head butt plate.  The 28″ barrels have no dings or pits, a few light handling marks, mirror perfect bores, unaltered 2 9/16″ chambers, rough barrel weight stamped at 3-5, and crisp clear lettering and rib matting. Even the factory jewelling at the breech face remains evident (see photos). You can look a long time and you will be hard-pressed to find a more genuine and crisp VH 16.  These guns are still a great investment, especially with high condition.  This is clearly an investment quality shotgun that has been carried and therefore can be used and shot with no loss of value.  If you want to see what near new, factory Parker case colors looked like, just check this one out.  They are not subtle, nor “pearlescent”, but bold and strong.  This fine Parker has it all; high factory condition, desirable features, good shooting dimensions, and the factory letter documenting the gun.  NICE!  Thanks for looking. Price: $8,950

Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, 26 Inch Barrels, Very Rare with Original Box
Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, 26 Inch Barrels, Very Rare with Original Box

Say you  a new shotgun. Would you use it, or stash it away — forever?

For some reason, whoever bought this 20g Parker VH back in 1921 for around $60 decided “stash it away — forever” was the way to go. And this week, 96 years later, it came out of hiding and sold for $14,750.

Quality V.H. shotguns were built to be “…strictly high-grade gun at a very low price–the best-made gun of its grade ever produced”. Hunters bought 78,670 of them and made the VH Parker’s most popular model.

Today, VHs are the most common Parkers out there. But how many of them all original, brand new, in their original box, with their original tags, like this one? Very, very few. That’s why some collector paid so much money for it.

Minty Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, with Original Box & Tags. Sold for $14,750.
Minty Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, with Original Box & Tags. Sold for $14,750.

Parker VH Grade 20 Gauge Double Shotgun, 26 Inch Barrels, Very Rare with Original Box and Hang TagsIt is not often that we have the opportunity to sell a firearm as special as this Parker.  In all the years we have been in the firearms business, neither we or any of the other dealers we have talked with have ever had an original box and hang-tags with a Parker Shotgun.  The 1921 vintage shotgun is a Vulcan Grade 20 Gauge with 26 inch barrels that is built on the lightweight O frame.  It is in the best condition we have seen in years with nearly 100% original blue and 95%+ original case colors, with the only wear apparent on the gun is a small loss of case colors and small dark staining spots on the sides of the breeches of the receiver, probably from “box wear”.  The bores are mint and the wood is nearly flawless, with only a couple of very small handling marks in the finish.  This is probably the nicest 20 Gauge Parker most people would ever see, and it is made extra special by having its original box and hang tags.  This is undoubtedly a “once in a lifetime” chance to own a very unique Parker Side-by-Side. PRICE: $14,750 — SOLD

Browning BSS Sporter in 20 Gauge w/ Browning Luggage Case
Browning BSS Sporter in 20 Gauge w/ Browning Luggage Case

Browning BSS Sporter (Straight Grip) in 20 Gauge, 28″ barrels w/ Browning Luggage CaseIt would be hard to find a nicer and more desirable Browning BSS side by side than this one!  This 20 gauge “Sporter” model was made in 1979 and is as nice as they come.  It comes complete with the original dark brown Browning hard sided luggage case with the owner’s manual and latch keys.  It has 28 inch barrels which is the longest length that Browning offered in this model, and they are the hardest length to find.  This model BSS also features a straight English style grip, a single selectable trigger, automatic ejectors, and a oil finished walnut stock with checkering on the wrist and forearm.  The Browning factory blue finish on the metal parts rates a conservative 98% and looks minty.  Only under very close examination can you find anything to deduct some percentage points.  The original factory stock set is in excellent condition and could pass for being made last week!  The checkering is still sharp and it has not been altered in any way.  The Browning butt plate is in excellent shape, and the shotgun pulls 14 & 1/4 inches.  The condition of this Browning is nearly perfect and looks like it was never used or carried in the field.  These BSS models have a reputation for being durable and nicely fit and finished.  Not only are they a very attractive and classy double gun, they handle well in the field and have great balance.  We share the opinion of many that you can’t buy a nicer double for the money than this model, and we think it would be next to impossible to find a BSS in any better condition than this one.  Price: $2,150

PARKER BROS. VH GRADE 20 GA, VULCAN SHOTGUN
PARKER BROS. VH GRADE 20 GA, VULCAN SHOTGUN

Here’s a decent look double coming up to auction this weekend at Milestone Auctions in Willoughby Hills, OH. The auction is Saturday November 14, @ 10:00 AM Eastern.

BTW: This shotgun is far from “Near Mint” like the sellers says. So be sure to take a closer look at the gun overall before bidding. The wood may be refinished, and even though the seller says the barrel-blue is original, it sure looks redone to me.

About as “British” as a Parker shotgun gets…

PARKER BROS. 12 GA. VHE – NUMBER 1 FRAME
PARKER BROS. 12 GA. VHE – NUMBER 1 FRAME

Here’s a Parker you rarely see. It’s a 12g that weighs 6lbs 10z – or about as much as a typical British 12 gauge game gun.

Most 12g Parkers were built on 1 1/2- 0r 2-sized frames. That pushed their weights into the 7 1/4 pound plus category (mostly plus). Even though Parker 12s could be built on the smaller 1-frames, few shooters ordered lightweight them. Instead, most people who wanted a sub-seven pound Parker dropped down to a 16 or 20 gauge.

Auction alert: 28g Parker, Beretta ASEL, rare American doubles…

Amoskeag Auctions two-day November sale starts tomorrow, 11/22, 2014 @ 9am. There are a number of nice looking guns in this auction  – from a slew of rare American-made bolt rifles to the double barrel shotguns listed below. That P. Mullin and the William Schaefer and super rare American side-by-sides, and from I’ve heard, the Schaefer is superb.

New York Underlever 12g Double Hammergun By Patrick Mullin
New York Underlever 12g Double Hammergun By Patrick Mullin

Lot 245: New York Underlever 12g Double Hammergun By Patrick Mullin: Serial #1, 12 ga., 28″ barrels with bright very good bores which show some scattered light pitting, a spot or two which might be slightly more moderate. The barrels show lovely plum and gray contrasting damascus pattern their full-length, appearing to have been very nicely, very professionally re-struck. The concave rib is marked “P. Mullin New York” and the breeches show very light geometric engraving. The frame is primarily a dark plum brown and speckled case-hardened patina with some generous colors atop the short tang. There are graceful chiseled “cap deflecting” contours behind each fence and the hammers retain their cap deflecting ridges at their leading edges. The lockplates are unembellished and show some silvery speckled and gray case-hardening with the right lock more of a pewter, the left more of a blue-gray with colors in the areas of the hammers. The straight grip English walnut buttstock rates very good plus showing nice grain figure but with some added finish, also retaining a few sparse minor dings and dents from the years. It is checkered slightly coarsely in a wrap-over pattern and there is an un-engraved shield-shaped silver monogram plate atop the wrist. The forend is in a similar state of condition and is near overall checkered and features a nice horn tip insert. Likely a very late shotgun, nearly all of Mullin’s forearms are retained by wedge and tenons while this example is a lever-release. Twelve gauge guns by Mullin are actually very rare as he was known for making large-bore fowling pieces. Most of his guns are 10 and 8 bore, with some 4 bore guns known. The barrels fit ever-so-slightly loose with the lever at the end of its travel and the locks are crisp and mechanically functional and are non-rebounding. A very nice example overall from this prolific New York maker of big bore single and double barrel fowling pieces. Estimate $1500-$2500

Lockup is tight with the top lever still slightly right of center and the gun seems to operate properly, the ejectors fitted very tightly to one another, occasionally one dragging the other up with it slightly upon ejection, it does not kick the shell out of the unfired barrel however; if the two are fired simultaneously they kick the shells robustly. Really a very lovely example overall in a very fine state of condition, Hoffman shotguns very rarely encountered. Estimate $3000-$5000.

The ribs are problem free and the wood is in very good condition too. The gun originally belonged to a man named George Eshias. I have been told that he was an Americana of Armenian heritage and that he was a famous hero in WW1 and that he fought with distinction in the US Army. I have not taken the time to confirm this, but his name has been engraved into the top of the left chamber . (Look at the photos) Hard to believe that his family let this heirloom go but life does get complicated at times. LOP is 14” and drop at the comb is 1.75, drop at the Heel is 3”. Barrels are choked F/F. Price: $2,600
