1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **

1938 Vintage Lefever Arms Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Double w/ 26″ Barrels, Ejectors, & Single Trigger ** RARE w/ Factory Letter! **: This is a very special all-original Lefever / Ithaca “A” Grade .410 Ga. double-barrel shotgun made in 1938, complete with an original November of 1975-dated factory letter. One of only 150 made in .410 gauge, this extremely-cool and beautiful little double features a case-colored receiver, a factory gloss blue finish on the barrels, 26″ inch fluid-steel barrels choked “Modified” and “Full” with 3″ inch chambers, a checkered solid rib with a red front bead sight and an ivory mid-bead, automatic ejectors (special order), a single trigger (special order), a tang-mounted automatic safety, and a point-pattern checkered American Walnut stock set with a beavertail forearm and pistol-grip buttstock.  The beavertail forearm has a push-button release and an ebony diamond inlay at the front edge, and the buttstock features a factory black pistol grip cap and a factory black serrated buttplate. While the original Lefever Arms of Syracuse, New York Discontinued operations in 1916, it was bought by the Ithaca Gun Company sometime shortly after.  In 1921 Ithaca decided to use the Lefever name to brand a high-quality but lower-cost field gun they were manufacturing, calling it the Lefever Nitro Special.  This allowed Ithaca to maintain the prestige of the Ithaca name but still produce a lower-cost shotgun.  The Lefever Nitro Special was a big success for the company and by 1934 Ithaca decided to offer an “upgraded” version of the gun, calling it the Lefever “A” Grade.  The “A” Grade guns would feature a color case-hardened frame with some minimal engraving, an improved checkered solid rib design, and a better grade of wood.  Automatic ejectors and a single trigger could be special ordered on this model for an additional cost.  The production run of the Lefever “A” Grade ran from 1934 until 1940, with a total of only 2,350 guns produced.  Out of the 2,350 made, 1,000 were 12 Gauge, 600 were 16 Gauge, 600 were 20 Gauge, and only 150 were .410 Gauge.  This particular example is serial number 301038 and is one of the 150 .410 Gauge guns made.  It was shipped in 1938 to Herbert Hearn Hardware company in Cambridge, Maryland and is listed in their records as it sits now, as a 26″ inch gun choked “Modified” and “Full” with ejectors and a single trigger.  A quick internet search turns up some old pictures of the Hearn building when it was still in business as well as some pictures of what remains of the building today (which was being restored as of 2017).  As you can see from the pictures, this very handsome little Lefever has been used but not abused.  All of the finish that remains on this shotgun is original, and it has not been altered or “improved” in any way.  It is a very classy double with lots of original gloss blue showing on the barrels and patches of case colors still showing on the receiver, particularly in the protected areas.  The factory stampings of “Lefever Arms, Branch Ithaca Gun Co. Inc. Ithaca, N.Y.” and “LEFEVER A GRADE” on the top of the chambers is still clear and legible.  All of the serial numbered parts are matching and original, including the forearm metal, receiver, and barrels.  The stock set is stamped with the serial number as well, with the beavertail forearm stamped on the underside between the barrel channels and the buttstock stamped under the tang of the triggerguard.  The bores in the 26″ inch barrels are perfect and mirror-bright.  They are free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or damage of any kind.  The stock set on this Lefever is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  All of the factory stock hardware is intact and nothing has been modified.  The checkered panels on the wrist and forearm are still clean and show only light wear.  This “A” Grade Lefever has a perfect, tight lock-up, and is perfectly “on face” with no wiggle or slop.  The single trigger, automatic ejectors, and automatic safety all work perfectly.  We have no doubt that this Lefever will function just as well today as the day it left the factory, and should do so for many more decades.   If you have been looking for a classy and collectible American-made vintage .410 double, this is your chance to get one of the rarest we have had in decades.  This Lefever Ithaca should not only be an excellent field gun that you can enjoy shooting, but an excellent long-term investment as well.  There can’t be too many of the original 150 .410’s made that are still floating around out there in original condition, much less with special order automatic ejectors and a single trigger like this one! Price: $6,500

This 16g Parker VH is the classic New England grouse gun …

Parker VH - 16g - SxS- Shotgun
Parker VH – 16g – SxS- Shotgun

A hundred years, most of New England was excellent grouse cover, especially north of Boston and up into southern New Hampshire and Maine. As people abandoned their small farms for jobs in the factory towns, mother nature took over and turned the old sheep pastures and apple orchards into prime grouse and woodcock cover.

Parker VH - 16g - SxS- Shotgun
Parker VH – 16g – SxS- Shotgun

The guys alive then hunted a world that will never be again. I think of them sometime, and of all the birds they used to see. When I do, I imagine them carrying a gun like this Parker as they follow a setter through hundreds of acres of grouse dreamland.

PARKER ~ VH GRADE 12-GAUGE, 26″ VULCAN STEEL BBLS, CYL/MOD, #1 FRAME, SOLID SHAPE & READY TO HUNT!…MFD 1918

Here’s your chance to get a deal on an American classic and a great vintage bird gun. For reasons I’ll explain below, this regular looking 12g VH-grade Parker is really a super hard-to-find shotgun. It’s in Gunauction.com now, and it has No Reserve. The listing ends November 1, 2020, @ 5:07pm.

While 12g VH-quality Parkers are easy to find, most of the ones out here weigh around 8 lbs. Some come in at 7.25 – 7.5 lbs. Very few are as light as the one you see here: 6-pounds, 12-ounces.

PARKER ~ VH GRADE 12-GAUGE, 26″ VULCAN STEEL BBLS, CYL/MOD, #1 FRAME, SOLID SHAPE & READY TO HUNT!…MFD 1918

Why? Because this 12g Parker was built on a 16-gauge action.

On Parkers, each gauge was built on a range of different sized frames (AKA actions). These frame sizes correlated with the gun’s weight.

On hammerless 12-gauges made in the 20th-century, the standard frame was a #2. Lightweight, hammerless 12s from this period were built on 1-1/2 frames. When someone ordered an ultralight model, it came on a #1 frame — the standard frame for 16-gauge Parkers.

PARKER ~ VH GRADE 12-GAUGE, 26″ VULCAN STEEL BBLS, CYL/MOD, #1 FRAME, SOLID SHAPE & READY TO HUNT!…MFD 1918: NO RESERVE!! Here’s a Parker Brothers VH Grade Hammerless Side-by-Side 12-gauge shotgun. This gun is built on the light #1 frame and has 26-inch Vulcan fluid steel barrels with 2-3/4″ chambers. It features double triggers, extractor, and automatic safety. Overall condition is very good although the metal finish shows wear and the stocks have been repaired/refinished. The barrels have not been cut and the chokes measure Cylinder (Left/.000″ constriction) and Modified (Right/.019″ constriction). The original finish on the barrels shows handling wear with various small nicks & dings but no dents. The finish is thin at the rear part of the barrels but I’d grade the barrel finish at about 65% overall. The finish on the frame has worn mostly to silver but there is some original case colors visible internally and in the most protected areas (inside the trigger guard, under the top lever). The serial numbered parts are matching and the screws are all nicely timed. The wood is quite sound but has been refinished and the checkering recut in the past. There are a couple of small chips along the upper tang and a small tight crack running back from the rear of the upper tang. A small chip is missing from the toe of the original dog’s head hard rubber buttplate. Length of Pull measures 13-7/8″ to the forward trigger; Drop @ Comb is 1-1/2″; Drop @ Heel is 2-7/8″. Weight is just under 6-pounds, 12-ounces. The mechanics are in good working order and the gun locks up tight with no signs of being off face. The triggers, safety, and extractor all work properly. The gun is just a little stiff to open which should improve with some shooting. The bores are bright and free of pitting, dents of bulges. The barrels “ring” when struck indicating the solder joints are solid. The serial number indicates this Parker VH was manufactured back in 1918. This would make someone a pretty decent vintage upland game gun!

What’s original look like? A lesson from two VH-grade Parkers…

TOP: A 28g Parker VH BOTTOM: a 12g Parker VH
TOP: A 28g Parker VH BOTTOM: a 12g Parker VH

When it comes to vintage shotguns, especially vintage American shotguns, original condition matters the most. But what does “original condition” look like, especially on a couple VH-grade Parkers that are 80+ years old.

28g Parker VH SxS
28g Parker VH SxS

Take a look at these two. The first is a 28g that looks like it spent most its life in the field. The second is a 12g that looks like it was locked in a gun case since new. Both look all original to me.

Which would you pick?

 Webley & Scott - Model 720 - 26" IC / IM - All Original
Webley & Scott – Model 720 – 26″ IC / IM – All Original

This 20g Webley & Scott Model 720 is a basic British boxlock built by one of the UK’s most famous makers. It was made to be rugged, reliable, and relatively affordable.

To that end, it was built on one of the most reliable actions ever conceived — the Anson & Deeley boxlock action. Harrington & Richardson imported them into the US in the ’70s, and back then they cost $1400 and came with a case and cleaning accessories.

Compared to the Fox, it has longer, 3″ chambers, shorter barrels, and a straight-grip stock that’s higher and longer. It’s a more modern gun and it’s cheaper, too ($3650 vs. $5900).

A H FOX, PHIL. A GRADE 20 GAUGE AUTO-EJECTORS, 100% ORIGINAL
A H FOX, PHIL. A GRADE 20 GAUGE AUTO-EJECTORS, 100% ORIGINAL

This 20g A.H. Fox A Grade is a great looking vintage SxS built by a legendary maker. It drips with the mystique that so many of us love about old American shotguns. It has great looking wood and it’s built on the reliable Fox boxlock action. It has ejectors, too.

Compared to the Webley, it has 2 1/2″ chambers, and a shorter, pistol-grip stock with a bit more drop, and longer barrels. It’s also a bit lighter. It’s also around 50 years older.

Webley & Scott - Model 720 - 26" IC / IM - All Original - Nice Shape
Webley & Scott – Model 720 – 26″ IC / IM – All Original – Nice Shape

Webley & Scott – Model 720 – 26″ IC / IM – All Original – Nice Shape: 3″, IC / IM (.005 / .020), Ejectors, Double Triggers, English Stock, Checkered Butt, Splinter Forearm, LOP 14-3/4″, Drop 1-1/2″ to 2-3/8″, Neutral Cast, Weight 5 lbs. 14 oz. Nice Original Gun that has been used in the field. Barrels 98+%, Wood 95+%, Frame shows some loss of finish – probably 85%. Price: $3650

The VH was one of up from Parker’s lowest grade hammerless shotgun (the Trojan). The “H” stood for “Hammerless” and the “E” was added to “VH” to indicate this gun was made with Ejectors, rather than extractors. According to Parker, the VH was “…strictly high-grade gun at a low price” and said they were “A gun for hard usage that cannot be equaled”. Introduced in 1899, it was the company’s most popular model, and 78,670 were made in all.

From what I can see, this one looks like pretty original. The pad is an addition, but the rest of the gun look good. If the barrels are in good shape and the rest of it is sound and shootable, this gun would be great for grouse, quail, woodcock, and anything else in the uplands.

Locks tight and mechanically perfect in every way. Tang screw, side nail, both cock screws, and left frizzen replaced by LDA. The iron mounts are all nicely engraved in the pattern common to Joe Manton sporting guns of the late flintlock, 1815 -1817, era. The whole is cased in an ultra-rare original, two-tiered (for a pair of Manton double flintlock sporting guns), Joseph Manton case complete with all period accessories and a proper original Trade Label from the 1815-17 period listing many of the Manton Patent features found on the gun. This extraordinarily rare gun represents the ultimate development of the British flintlock sporting gun by, arguably, the greatest British Gun maker who ever lived, having all of the best innovations present and in working order on a single firearm by Joseph Manton. Overall, mechanically perfect and in fine condition throughout with traces of original finish. Price: $75,000

Grouse hunters: Here’s your dream Parker SxS…

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

Ruffed grouse hunting isn’t for sissies. There are no horse-drawn carriages to ride in or wide-open fields to stroll through, and no one pushes birds your way as you block a shelterbelt.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

If you want to chase these ruffed grouse, you need to get in the woods and get dirty. You’re going to get scratched up and bruised, and you’re going to carry your gun a lot.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

That’s why lightweight doubles are popular with experienced grouse guys.

PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE
PARKER VH GRADE 16 GAUGE 0 FRAME SIDE-BY-SIDE

The Parker VH you see here is 16 gauge built on a 0 frame (frame = action, Parker actions ran from 000-frames, used on .410s and 28 gauges, to 7-frames, used on 10 and 8 gauges). It weighs just 5lbs, 13oz — lighter than a lot of 20-gauges – and about a pound less than your typical 16-gauge Parker.

Good gun alert: 12g Parker VH SxS, 1 1/2 frame …

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

I’m going to out on a limb here and say this 12g Parker VH is a nice double. While the seller doesn’t say much about the gun, it gun looks pretty original and appears to be in OK shape. Sure it has some honest wear, but that adds to the gun’s charm.

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

What I really like about this double is what it is and what it doesn’t have.

12g Parker VH 12ga Side by Side shotgun, #172487: Price: $2,500.00

First, it’s a 12g on a 1 1/2 frame. Standard 12g Parkers come on No. 2 frames. That’s why they’re heavy — usually 7.5lbs+ — and too much gun for the hunting I do. The 1 1/2 frame is smaller than the 2, and twelves built on it can be a half-pound lighter. That means this Parker could weigh under 7lbs–which light for a 12g VH.

Second, it doesn’t have ejectors — which is good. Upland hunters don’t need them, and Parker ejectors aren’t great. Not having them on a SxS  makes this gun reliable and it makes it weigh a bit less.

Parker VH 16 Gauge Side-by-Side SUPER CLEAN, CRISP, UNTOUCHED GUN!
Parker VH 16 Gauge Side-by-Side SUPER CLEAN, CRISP, UNTOUCHED GUN!

Parker VH 16 Gauge Side-by-Side SUPER CLEAN, CRISP, UNTOUCHED GUN!
General Specs: Parker, year 1931, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 6oz, SxS
Serial Number: 234883
I get to see a lot of fine Parker guns in my business, and high-grade guns to boot, but this fine Parker, sn234883 built in 1931, stands out because of its CLEAN, UNMOLESTED condition.  Another nicety is that it is a full 1/4lb. lighter than most 16ga. Parkers built on the #1 frame, weighing just 6lbs. 6oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin.  Look at the wood to metal fit, the checkering, the screws…they are factory original and superb.  All the finishes, including the wood finish, are factory original and untouched.  Virtually 99% factory case color remains on the receiver, bold and vivid (keep in mind the photo flash washes out some of the vividness. The colors show better in person), and 99% factory original blue on the barrels.  There is not one crack or split or repair anywhere in the wood, and the gun measures 14 1/4″ to the factory dogs head butt plate.  The 28″ barrels have no dings or pits, a few light handling marks, mirror perfect bores, unaltered 2 9/16″ chambers, rough barrel weight stamped at 3-5, and crisp clear lettering and rib matting. Even the factory jewelling at the breech face remains evident (see photos). You can look a long time and you will be hard-pressed to find a more genuine and crisp VH 16.  These guns are still a great investment, especially with high condition.  This is clearly an investment quality shotgun that has been carried and therefore can be used and shot with no loss of value.  If you want to see what near new, factory Parker case colors looked like, just check this one out.  They are not subtle, nor “pearlescent”, but bold and strong.  This fine Parker has it all; high factory condition, desirable features, good shooting dimensions, and the factory letter documenting the gun.  NICE!  Thanks for looking. Price: $8,950
